Guest Post: Guns, Like Washing Machines, Don't Act - People Do

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the usual cadre of politicians, pundits and commentators are hitting the airwaves and condemning believers of the “guns don’t kill” rationale. This exercise in demonization is being followed with pleas to strip Americans of their guns and place a ban on vaguely-defined “assault” weapons.
What’s been lacking in the flurry of proposals that inevitably followed a catastrophe like Sandy Hook has been a deeper look at the kind of environment impressionable minds are coming of age in. Far too often, politically-minded observers fall back on reactionary emotion for the solution to problems without actually engaging in critical thinking as to the root of what they are trying to solve.
As Southwestern University School of Law professor Butler Shaffer put it, we tend to focus too much “attention on the consequences of our behavior” instead of the “casual factors, as the thinking that produces dysfunctional results.”
We then end up looking to government to solve problems which it has a hand in creating. Many pro-gun control advocates are quick to mention that there is little gun violence in countries with “reasonable” gun laws in place. Yet as economist Thomas Sowell points out, countries with stricter gun control laws such as Mexico, Brazil and Russia all have higher murder rates than the U.S. When you compare Switzerland to Germany, where the former has higher rates of gun ownership than the latter, Switzerland has a lower murder rate.
The difficulty with using the empirical method to explain human phenomena is that it ignores the complexity of mankind. Data can be cherry-picked to prove any conclusion. Logic and reason are the best tools to make sense of a tragedy such as a school shooting. And the fact remains that government bans never prevent said goods from reaching the public. More often than not, good people abide by the prohibition while the more criminally inclined ignore the law.
The truth is we will never really know what compelled a young man to take the life of his mother, her coworkers and the children of Sandy Hook Elementary. There are discernable factors that may have played a significant role, however.
Our country’s empathetic response to the ongoing wars that result in the deaths of innocent women and children has certainly resulted in the dehumanizing of fatal violence. The press’s ignoring, and outright covering up, of the human victims (often called “collateral damage”) of the War on Terror has had an immeasurable impact on how today’s society views the loss of life.
When the Washington Post ran a photo of 2-year-old Ali Hussein being lifted from the rubble of his home in Baghdad after an American air strike in 2008, some wrote to the paper and complained that the picture would undermine the war effort. The fact that the child was stripped of a life that was fully ahead of him was lost on most Americans.
There also is the increased use of psychotropic pharmaceuticals that have been shown to induce suicidal and violent tendencies. These drugs were used by the shooter in Connecticut, the shooter in Aurora, Col., and one of the Columbine High School assailants.
The politically-connected pharmaceutical industry, in cahoots with the equally connected medical industry, cashes in by peddling these government-approved narcotics. While correlation doesn’t automatically mean causation, none of these points have been highlighted by a media establishment that would rather make quick judgments instead of taking the time to examine what has become the new “normal” American life.
Those who decry “the guns don’t kill people” line aren’t acknowledging reality. Guns are inanimate objects. They lack free will and consciousness. To say that a gun kills a person is to say that couches, shoes and washing machines can kill people.
In short, guns don’t act – people do. The same goes for television shows, movies and video games with violent content. They are objects that are valued by the minds of the public. Why so many in our society are drawn to violence is worth asking because the Sandy Hook shooting was but another extension of this fascination.
My father often shares with me an anecdote about a classmate who brought a rifle to his high school speech class to demonstrate how to properly clean a firearm. This was in the blue-collar city of Emmaus, and nobody felt unsafe in the presence of a student brandishing a functioning weapon. The question is; what has changed in the decades since the late 1960s? It certainly can’t be access to guns since they were just as widely available back then, if not more.
Eighteenth-century British statesman Edmund Burke once wrote that “the nature of man is intricate; the objects of society are of the greatest possible complexity” and that the simplicity often displayed in hasty political action is “grossly ignorant.” It’s disappointing, but not unexpected, to witness another intellectual mob calling for prohibition of the one tool that holds tyranny at bay.
Common sense says that disarming law-abiding citizens will make them more susceptible to harm. But in the aftermath of a tragedy such as Sandy Hook, rational thought is tossed aside in favor of short run solutions.
What must be considered is why some individuals are so drawn to violence, what effect has the increased prescription rate of antidepressants had, and why casualties in war have become so dehumanized. There is an uncomfortable but common denominator in all these factors.
I would hope anti-gun zealots notice it before they ramp up their War on Firearms.

There were a number of people who became misty eyed when young Barack Obama declared his candidacy in Springfield, Illinois. They publicly pined for a new Lincoln. Parallels to the great emancipator were drawn. In their minds, their candidate, the first Black President in American history, was poised to step into the pantheon of the greatest of American Presidents.
The Lincoln memorial portrays Lincoln as a god. For a century we have been subjected to the fables of Honest Abe. The popular images of Lincoln so carefully crafted by the victorious Republicans have obscured many of the very real consequences of Lincoln’s policies. The suspension of habeas corpus, the laying waste of a third of the country, the deaths of almost a million citizens, the destruction of state sovereignty, and a hundred years of imperialism were purposely concealed. The omnipotent, omnipresent federal government that we see today is a direct result of Lincoln’s concentration of power in the office of the presidency.
The signing of the surrender at Appomattox ended state’s rights. The final remaining check on the all-encompassing power of the federal government was the armed citizen. The paladin of the armed citizen was the Second Amendment. What followed was a century and a half of salient attacks on the natural right of self-defense. Self-defense was purposely demonized and the armed citizen was portrayed as a relic of some prior era.
The final assault has begun. Congress, the captive audience of the oligarchs will no doubt embrace some form of gun abolition. Should they fall short of the expectations of their patrons, the President will step in with Lincolnesque executive orders to complete the ascension of federal power. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/
Today half the population directly depends on the federal government for is sustenance. Of the other half, a significant portion is indirectly subsidized by a plethora of government grants and contracts. Should the government for whatever reason withdraw this support, the economy will immediately collapse. Consequently the federal government is the single engine that powers the economy.
Knowing their very lives depend on government largess, the majority has voted for more government. The majority will not bite the hand that feeds it. It will happily surrender the last implements of independence in the age old Faustian bargain of liberty exchanged for security. The daily ration will no doubt assuage the concerns of many of the thinking few. For the majority all faith will be placed in the federal government. The central planners will finally have no checks on their determination of who eats and who starves.
Those of us who are still free have three options: First we can surrender our natural right of self-defense, join the herd and disarm ourselves. Second, we can take a lesson from our history and like the militia at Concord we can disperse our weapons keeping them out of the reach of tyrants and saving our potential for resistance for another day. Third, when the pinch comes, we can stand up like men and women, honor those who stood before us, and secure the liberty of our children and grandchildren by watering the tree of liberty with our own blood and the blood of tyrants.

Thus by your logic washing machines are intentionally built to kill people or things. The history of the gun has one and virtually only one purpose and that is to maim, murder and kill. But obviously you also miss the point. The NRA wishes to even provide newborns with guns, which is totally rational.... My question is who in the hell are you fighting or intend to fight? Are you part of this armed militia that intentionally wishes to overthrow the government? Are you packing heat in a movie theatre every time and will shoot to kill, amidst hitting others in all probability, in order to defend yourself. If you killed say five people in that same theatre and were lucky enough to hit and kill the gunman, should you get a medal for that? Think you would be arrested and charged? Are you as skilled with that gun as you think you are, and should you bring an automatic just to make sure you get the right job done?
And if you accomplish all that and everybody else is carrying also in this same theatre, what's the point of a police force, or courts, or judges or even jail? Cops could just be used then as meter maids, and speeding ticket writers for all the worth they would be. If everybody is locked and loaded, then multiple harmless arguments will be settled with a gun. Not a fist, not angry words, but the ease and cowardice and narcissistic power trip of the gun owner. He or she may even be drunk, but what the hell, the gun is the answer. I agree, always better to go down in a blaze of blood and glory, knowing that you're rights were protected but that you're moral responsibility and common sense to be aware of what neccessitates a level head in civil, non-paranoid society, was abandoned and pissed on by you along the way.

6. TPTB over the last three years has had involvement directly/ indirectly, overtly/covertly with the Fort Hood, Gifford, Colorado Theater, and Sandy Hook incidents. This is direct abuse of power following a pattern of deception that can very clearly be identified. Most of us see through the lies, and we expect these kinds of events to accelerate until the civil war comes.
7. The Alex Jones interview with Piers Morgan was a set up to whip up popular hysteria against gun owners. It is more evidence of the divide and conquer strategy that TPTB intent to use on the people.
8. Why has there been no revenge or rebellion? It doesn't have anything to do with cowardice. The law abidding patriots are patient and prepared to stand up and defend themselves as our forefathers did before them. There will be skirmishes, there will be ongoing abuses. We know their divide and conquer, attrition, scorched earth, and zero-sum game tactics.

Most of our murders come from just a dozen cities. In some of those cities, the death rate is higher than some war zones. And in diverse cities, brown colored young males effectively commit 100% of the shootings and other violent crimes.
Something must be done about this...but nobody will point out the obvious. I mean, as Piers Morcunt points out, "are you noticing a pattern?" The patterns of violent crime are bitchslap you upside the head obvious.

If you remove black on black violence our murder rate, especially murder by gun is a mid range european rate. The gun crime statistic would drop overnight with less prohibition laws. Violence propensity is a matter of biology; it is NOT distributed equally throughout humans. Neither is intelligence, melanin, fast twitch muscle fiber percentage, and a whole host of other attributes. Humans are biodiverse and have separate evolutionary lineages.
For example european DNA is 4% neandarthal. Nobody else on the planet besides caucasians has any. This means that diversity arose in a state of relative separation. Darwin, you know that guy that the supposed liberals worship, said that races should not be classified as the same species. Maybe not even same genera.

Aggressive behaviors are noted in some species of fish, whereas other fish species like to school. Each of these behaviors is an adaptation to selective pressure. But it is wrong to assume that aggression is the "solution" to selective pressure; it is just something that permits a higher offspring survival rate and eventual trait dominance. Jared Diamond says that subsaharan evolution proceeded the way it did because of disease, specifically malaria and YFV, which would have tended to wipe out concentrations of population and consequently inhibited development of civilization which would normally tend to select for civilized behavior. It turns out that aggression and violence help you if you want to inhibit civilization, but they are not the best "solution" to the problem, just one that permits trait dominance over time.
In fact, human intelligence was NOT an adaptation; it was an accidental mutation that serendipitously permitted trait dominance over time. ALL adaptations under evolutionary theory are exactly that! They are no more than accidents which proved fortuitous. This is what is meant by the "blind watchmaker."
But all of this is rejected by liberal evolutionists.

Their driver's license is revoked, sure, but when has that ever stopped someone from getting behind the wheel? The person who kills with a gun and is convicted of a felony is banned from ever owning a gun again. Again, when has that stopped a criminal from acquiring a gun? A gun is an equalizer. It makes a 100 lb. woman have enough force to stop a rapist twice her size. It gives an old couple a means to protect themselves against home invasions. The police are minutes away when seconds count.
