New York's Other Epidemic
The flu will come and go, but another, far more troubling epidemic appears to have gripped New York: one which, in a post Sandy Hook world, probably needs as much discussion as tragic mass murders conducted by deranged lone gunmen, especially since absolutely nobody appears to be addressing this particular issue. Why? Because, frankly we think the two kinds of tragedies are very intimately connected.

In '72 way more people smoked...........Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Politicians smoked more too. I remember the Watergate Committee, all smoked pipes. Talked less, listened more with a nice pipe in your mouth. Maybe smoking wasn't so bad..... allowed people to light up and chill rather than lose it over every little thing.

In 2009 there were 37,000 suicides, the first year suicides outnumbered motor vehicle accidents since the 1940s.

Did any of these bridges have warning labels advising these people of the risks involved with jumping off a bridge? I'd jump too if I lived in NYC. When I was in the Navy and stationed in Connecticut, we often had to take a bus down to NYC to fly out. What I saw was disgusting. Why would anyone want to live there {and this was MANY years ago}? And now you have Bloomberg for a mayor. Some fates are worse than death. Living in NYC is one of them.

The documentary’s primary subjects all struggled with mental illness, including severe depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorders, and the documentary struggles to understand their illness while illuminating the anger and hurt of their loved ones.

Most people here think this is a humorous article. I don't . These people are tormented and in great pain. We ZH'ers are above that. Wall Street greed and fraud has caused millions of ruined lives and thousands of suicides from people in total despair. Some day perhaps such desparate , lost and frightened souls would take up arms and fight their oppressors -rather than take their own lives. There was a time in my life I could relate to these poor lost souls -but I thought of the gutwrenching pain it would cause my 10 year old daughter - the only one who at the time seemed to love me unconditionally and who could forgive me for my mistakes. Life is cruel. People are often cruel and heartless. These people and their families need our compassion and our support -as well as our prayers.

New York State has the fewest suicide per capita in the entire nation, 8 per 100,000 resident:

If the City were as suicidal as the entire State (which, again, is the least suicidal state in the nation), you would have 659 suicides in 2012 based upon a population of 8.244 million residents.
If you really want to go where the action is, and where this may indeed be an "issue", I suggest listening in on the police scanners in Wyoming, Montana and Alaska, which are the number 1, 2 and 3 states, respectively, for suicides in America. But then that probably wouldn't fit somebody's political agenda or preconceived biases, so never mind.

Seven years ago a yahoo (alcoholic womanizing) fire Lieutenant in San Francisco tackled a man threatening to jump. The Lt. tried to save the guy, but instead the guy fell off the ledge and died. Too bad the fire Lt. did not die with the victim.
Guess the fire Lt. made the guy's family pretty rich that day. Too bad it cost them their relative's life. Sad.

A magazine did a story on gun deaths about 10 years ago trying blame guns but could not conceal the truth. The vast majority of gun deaths of white people were suicides and the vast majority of black deaths were murder. This story shows that if anyone wants to kill themselves that they do not need a gun. A woman in DC just stood in front of an oncoming train. Both of these places have strong laws against gun possession so they find another way.
