Greeks Raid Forests In Search Of Wood To Heat Homes

Greece just seems to be getting worse and worse.  Being the leading edge of Southern Europe’s descent into 3rd world status, Greece’s lessons are all of our lessons, as I outlined in my piece last year The Global Spring.  From the Wall Street Journal:

EGALEO, Greece—While patrolling on a recent cold night, environmentalist Grigoris Gourdomichalis caught a young man illegally chopping down a tree on public land in the mountains above Athens.

When confronted, the man broke down in tears, saying he was unemployed and needed the wood to warm the home he shares with his wife and four small children, because he could no longer afford heating oil.

Tens of thousands of trees have disappeared from parks and woodlands this winter across Greece, authorities said, in a worsening problem that has had tragic consequences as the crisis-hit country’s impoverished residents, too broke to pay for electricity or fuel, turn to fireplaces and wood stoves for heat.

Such woodcutting was last common in Greece during Germany’s brutal occupation in the 1940s, underscoring how five years of recession and waves of austerity measures have spawned drastic measures.

“The average Greek will throw anything into the fireplace that can be burned, ranging from old furniture with lacquer, to old books with ink, in order to get warm,” said Stefanos Sapatakis, an environmental-health officer at the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Glad Europe is fixed.

IRS Warns Employers: Do Not Try to Avoid ObamaCare Insurance

The Internal Revenue Service warned employers in a new regulatory proposal not to come up with clever schemes to avoid Obamacare’s employer health insurance mandate.

The IRS said it would soon issue “anti-abuse rules” to discourage employers from taking advantage of any regulatory loopholes.

Del. Officials Unveil Gun Legislation

Gov. Jack Markell is proposing background checks for private gun sales as part of a new package of gun control legislation for Delaware.

The proposal to end the so-called gun show loophole is one of several announced by state officials Monday following the massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut last month. Other include banning military-style, assault-type weapons and ammunition clips holding more than five rounds for rifles and 10 rounds for handguns.

Officials also are proposing a ban on guns within 1,000 feet of schools and mandatory reporting of lost and stolen firearms.

Attorney General Beau Biden said the proposed ban on assault-type weapons likely will generate the most intense debate in the legislature, but that he believes it is consistent with the Second Amendment right to bear arms...

Tyranny, when it rains, it pours.

The American Main Stream Media has gone into silence over the European crisis. They attempt to hide the collapse of European nations like Greece and Spain to keep American consumers confident and willing to borrow money and spend. They also sweep Europe's disaster under the rug to help maintain equity share prices in the markets, spuring the wealth effect and more consumer confidence.

The MSM is a wholly owned tool of corporate America and is NOT a news reporting organization. They report only what the corporate masters demand be reported, like great American military victories in Afghnistan, and ignore the collapse of a number of European nations.

Like the crisis in Eastern Europe, the US media reports nothing from the Baltic states down to Bulgaria, as if these nations do not exist.

Rumania is about to get full EU membership, in the United Kingdom, the government social welfare system and national health service is said to be bracing for a mass immigration of Rumanians seeking free housing, food, education, health care and monthly cash payments.  According to EU dictates Britain must take all comers, and to fund them and house them fully. Native British are being put at the back of the line for all benefits in order to make room for the flood of Rumanians seeking British free living handouts and housing. The UK can do nothing to stop it, it is the EU law. UK taxpayers owe every Rumanian a living, free of charge. You think that sounds nuts? Look into it, it is the law of the EU. Bend over British, you are going to take it in the ass again!

So...are you still scared that Romanians, of all people, are going to crush the UK, whilst there are millions of former crown countries emigrants flooding the country every year and more millions have done so for the last 40 years?

Can you explain how the Bulgarians and the Romanians (remember, UE members since 2007) waited to flock to the UK for 6 years now? A hell of a wait if you ask me...

Weren't the Poles also going to take over UK few years ago also?

BTW, stop drinking the politician's kool-aid that only keep you distracted from the real enemy, THEM and their handlers!

Yes, because the Rumanians were not YET allowed full rights in the EU. They went through a trail period with limited EU rights. Check into it. This trial phase is about to end and the right of movement within the EU is about to kick in. If you don't believe me, just google the story, it has been all over the UK news papers.

And if you can't disagree with me without running your foul mouth, at least check into the story and see that you are right first. Rumania was in the EU, YES, BUT NOT under full rights until now. Check it out, I am right, you are wrong.

Unlike you, I have no need to run a foul mouth and embarass myself on a public discussion board. Does foul language and abuse make you a better man? Really, does it? I doubt it, it just shows what a bore you are. And nothing is worse than a bore who is wrong. Or are you a Rumanian bore, who is packing his bag to head to the UK for free living on the UK taxpayers shilling? The PM of Britian has promised to try and look into UK rights to limit immigration from the new FULL members Rumania and Bulgaria. As of now, it looks like the EU retains the right to sue the UK to force the rights of free movement.

Try researching you position before calling people borish names that most of us left behind when we grew out of our teenage years.

See you in the dole queu! Mate!

"Rumania is about to get full EU membership, in the United Kingdom, the government social welfare system and national health service is said to be bracing for a mass immigration of Rumanians seeking free housing, food, education, health care and monthly cash payments".

There is no half membership for any EU country, so even if i do have a foul mouth, that doesn't make me wrong, but you are still wrong.

My point is that this is all hyped up by politicians (as was the case for Poles in the past), to scare the flock into submission. And i do know about the press campaign, is just that, a campaign. On one side you are bitching about US MSM that does not report shit and on the other side you take the UK MSM bullshit line, hook and sinker. Do the British workers earned more before the first EU enlargement? Were Greeks, Portuguese and Spanish workers flocked and overwhelmed UK in the 80? Did Czech, Hungarian, Slovak or Slovenian workers overwhelmed UK in the 90s? Did the pay go down due to lesser Europeans countries workers muscling out the British worker or were there any other causes?

How can you be so naive (foul mouth in check) to believe this male bovine excrement spewed by notorious lairs? What would you think about yourself when this scare fails to materialize, as others have done in the past? Isn't it better to wise up now and save yourself unwarranted stress?

Btw, the combined population of Bulgaria and Romania is not even close to 30 million, would the UK need to import 4-5 more million workers from other places to reach the number paddled by the truthful UK MSM, quoting the paragon of truthfulness, the Prime Fucking Minister?!!

Wtf man!

I don't pretend to know your mind. I don't think I want to. You are entitled to your opinions. But if you take the trouble to CHECK the EU program for Romania and Bulgaria you would know that the people did not YET enjoy the right to free movement. And YES there is LESS than full membership rights as nations are ansorbed into the EU. Anybody in Europe could tell you that fact. It is common knowledge and recorded in any number of media sources.

Cutting trees is a well known phenomena.  One of the penultimate indicators of system collapse.  I saw it when I was a kid in Central Europe.

Done by hand saw at night. You cut it one night, come back next and cut the branches, etc. The trunk is cut below dirt. In two days you put dirt over it and the tree disappears: sort of like people in Argentina and other places.

What if the Greek Government repudiated all its debt?  Would this guy then be able to buy heating oil rather than chop down everybody's trees?

What if Greece also repudiated all the private debt Greeks took on when rates fell after joining the euro, and everybody went crazy speculating on property and Porsche Cayennes?  Would this guy then be able to buy heating oil rather than chop down everybody's trees?

What if Greece also left the euro and reissued the drachma?  Would this guy then be able to buy heating oil rather than chop down everybody's trees?

What if Greece also issued a new currency backed by its 300 tonnes of gold?  Would this guy then be able to buy heating oil rather than chop down everybody's trees?

I suspect the trees are coming down regardless.  I appreciate people both inside and outside Greece want to be angry, but toward what should this anger be directed?  The day Greece joined the euro mechanism was the day that set this entire string of events in motion.  Austerity isn't what's hurting the Greeks, and debt repudiation isn't going to make Greece prosperous anytime soon.  Not having any money---either to spend or pay back debt---along with a lack of competitiveness is what is hurting Greeks.  The cure for that is a little more difficult.

Incidentally, the vast majority of Greeks still want to remain in the euro mechanism.  Given that mindset, it is a little simplistic to say "it's all the bankers' fault".  At what point do people have to accept responsibility for their own actions?  Isn't that what "liberty" is all about?

It is all about surrendring sovereignty to Europe & having access to Greece's Oil and gas reserves.

Having relatives in Greece I can assure you that things are very hard for a segment of the population.  People like you and me, two income families that pay their taxes, that  work hard for their kids, have in a few short months gone from living comfortable middle class lifestyles to near poverty. Don't believe the MSM that paints all Greeks as lazy, tax evading assholes. Take a look in your respective public sectors and ask yourself do you trust your public officials? and how will your communities be affected if unemplyment shot to almost 30% officially?

It is true that a Greek  bloated public sector that afforderded good pay and benefits, relative to the private sector,is being hit by across the board cuts. The net result is that reduced wages for goverment employees  result in lower spending of said workers and a cascade of reduction in consumer products for the private sector. A death spiral is in full force. What I am suprised about being a Greek is how much longer will it be before the people lose it tottally and they start hanging politicians and bankers.  Mark my words, I know the Greek psyche , it is coming and it will be ugly.

There is no way out of this mess other than complete and total revolution against the banking cartel.

When  Italy falls, the time that it will take for France and Germany to fall  financially will be quick. It is a forgone conclusion that Portugal, Spain, Greece and Ireland are "gone". Contrary to what people think the Euro will remain. Europen sovereignty will be lost in the process.

What will happen to our beloved America? Rewind back 30 yeras and play forward. How much have we changed. From a country that produced everything, very low external debt, and generally safe country to a third world like crime infested cities, huge debt and a recent assaut on our 2nd Amendment. A financial crisis and the push to get our weapons are the next to last steps in surrendering more of our  sovereignty to international banks and organizations.

What people seem to lose sight off, is that the situation in Greece begun getting out of hand approximately 15 years ago when all of the sudden the goverment started borrowing in order to prepare for the Olympics, borrowing to buy submarines and guns from Germany, as opposed to cheaper offerings from USA, and adropping interest rates from 20+% to under 3%. That action alone caused the housing market to explode and people to all of a sudden be indebted to the banks.

Similar actions have caused indebtness in Spain, Portugal, Iceland, Italy, Iceland, America, Japan and soon to come to France, Germany and China. When the dust of this financial crisis settles the nations of Europe will be united in an amalgam that is easily controlled. The people of the USA will have either lost the second Amendment right or be battling the bankers as they will continue to cause financial crisis in order to totally contrtol the country. Japan will face the fate of the US and China will fragment from internal strife as the have not will demand a piece of the wealth.
