Presenting The Working Poor Of America

Tyler Durden's picture

Much has been made of the slow but steady 'improvement' in the unemployment data we are treated to on a weekly and monthly basis from the hallowed eves of the BLS. Just as much has been written on the ugly under-belly of this apparent improvement with the work-force becoming dominated by older workers forced to stay in jobs for longer and an increasing downshift in the kind of jobs available and taken. To wit, Reuters cites a report from the The Working Poor Families Project that highlights the surprising levels of poverty so many Americans find themselves in. The number of low-income 'working' families has increased three straight years - and now stands at over 10.2million, with more than 46 million people living in low-income families. "Although many people are returning to work, they are often taking jobs with lower wages and less job security, compared with the middle-class jobs they held before the economic downturn," which means that nearly one in three working families in the United States is struggling to meet basic needs. Although they are often overlooked, the number of low-income working families has been increasing steadily, resulting in a shrinking middle class and challenging a fundamental assumption that in America, work pays - as we have pointed out before (at these levels, it simply doesn't thanks to the benefit availability).

You talkin' to me?? Anymore it's so hard to tell who's talking to who around here, LOL...........

francis_sawyer's picture

Are you talkin to me???

I'm talking to the 'Vitruvian Garfield'... [just to be sure]...

DFCtomm's picture

What you feel doesn't matter. The "honky" will simply import Mexicans to work for those peanuts, but enjoy that welfare, while it lasts.

Creepy Lurker's picture

The operative part of that phrase being, "while it lasts."

At this point, I'm just waiting to see the show when the welfare, disability, Aid-To-Dependent-Children, SS, SSI, SNAP cards, and special benefits to Socialist-Lesbian-Peruvian-Clog-Dancers all turn to rubber and start bouncing around.

toady's picture

And the outcome will be the same. Take a look at New Mexico & Phoenix.

We will NOT have facts pointed out on THIS topic, OK?

Even Haiti is whitey's fault, despite that they slaughtered pretty much all of them after 1802 Independence and have run the place themselves for 200 years.

Meanwhile on the same fking island, hispanics have a society typical of what hispanics pretty much do everywhere else in central america.

Biology is destiny.

francis_sawyer's picture

Good thing there are no 'Jews' in America then... Benjamin Franklin warned everyone about this... [but, of course he NEVER really said it... I KNOW, I saw it on the internet & you can't publish anything on the internet that isn't TRUE]...

Whew!... Good thing we escaped THAT potential mess...

secret_sam's picture

Biology is destiny.  That's always the catch.

Sure, sure, maybe all the negroes deserve every bit of suck they own because of their inherent inferiority, but what does that say about all us regular white folk when we compare ourselves to the JOOS?!?!?!?!

Those fuckers may run the world and scheme constantly to fuck us over, but there's so few of them!  If they're *dominating* institutional power, it can ONLY be our DNA, right?

It's not our "fault," but we can NEVER HOPE TO WIN!

DeadFred's picture

A Google satellite view of the border between the two is priceless. One side is denuded and barren while a straight-line border separates the wasteland from forested hillsides.

thefedisscam's picture

what the Whites can expect? Their ancesters bring the blacks in to the America as slaves!

Marty Rothbard's picture

It wasn't my ancestors(Germans who settled in NC).  It was the British, and damn Yankee traders.  Read your history.

quintago's picture

It's all relative. If 40% of the people are in the same boat, then it's not really material.

Why are the red states bluer than the blue states?

Blue states win, again.

Red state mentality: "Work for a living"

Blue state mentality: "Where's my free shit?"

Red State / Blue State mentality: nation of retards.

MeBizarro's picture

Exactly and looking at these kind of things on a state level instead of a county or smaller geographic area dilutes any real insite into these kinds of analyses.

Miffed Microbiologist's picture

Yeah there's nothing like having a red state mentality and then having your red state where you live morph into a blue state. By definition blue state eats red state.Beautiful Cali has become a sewage pit.

Ballin D's picture

Trying to avoid red vs blue or north vs south here but California kind of demonstrates an accelerated lifecycle of a society.  Built by hard work and ingenuity and torn to pieces by progressive policies when people saw the opportunities available for harvast.

sethstorm's picture

The North: Creates actual businesses and respects workers.

The South: Has to steal business from the North and hates workers.

A. Magnus's picture

If you count the number of wage slave plantations in the South you could make a case for it...

GOSPLAN HERO's picture

The South was screwed forever in 1865.

Dingleberry's picture

Having spent a lot of time in the South and the North recently, the South is definitely more economically stable. A buck goes a lot further in Dixie. Plus they have nowhere near the societal ills that the North has. Detroit, Camden, Philly, Gary IN ring a bell? These places exist in much smaller scales in the South.

Marty Rothbard's picture

Have you considered that it costs much less to live in the confederate states of america, particularly since the percentage of residents living in rural areas is much higher?  For instance, I live on the family farm, have no mortgage, no city property taxes, or licensing, no water bill, since I use a well.  During the winter I heat my home, and my domestic hot water with wood I cut myself via my wood fired furnace.  I grow vegetables, winter and summer, I'm currently eating fresh lettuce, kale, carrots, spinach, and broccoli from my garden, as well as canned summer produce.  For the price of a small Manhattan apartment, I can live comfortably, and still stack silver.  I'd say the south is rising right now, and when SHTF, I'd much rather be here than yankee land.   All you city slickers have your comeuppance on the way.  I hope you enjoy it, I will!

Agent P's picture

At least they're working for it.  These people should be commended.

Snakeeyes's picture

With declining wages and salaries as a percentage of GDP, is anyone really surprised?

Ying-Yang's picture

Pretty depressing chart.... 3 states have 40% of the working families making below 200% of poverty level?

The government's definition of poverty is based on total income received. For example, the poverty level for 2012 was set at $23,050 (total yearly income) for a family of four.

Never One Roach's picture

They better grab a zero down house before they start checking on employment, income, etc.

AccreditedEYE's picture

Well, there it is Ben. Your proof of QE/Printing effects on the REAL economy... not that you care, but just the same.

blu's picture

He goes to sleep every night with that chart under his pillow.

A. Magnus's picture

Notice how there is NO correlation between states with lots of 'Joos' like Florida, New York and California with propsperity and economic power. I guess the little F.B.I. Klansmen bitchwhores who say everything is the 'Joos' fault will need to fabricate something else to make people on this site look bad...

OOONONO's picture

SEC surfs midget-tranny porn, and the FBI trolls racist tangential mind spew - public service ain't what it used to be

otto skorzeny's picture

while you eat cat food then enjoy the fact that 1.7% of US population(joos) control 40% of US wealth-and if everyone agrees that there is no correlation with hard work enabling one to get wealthy in the US and everything to do with crony capitalism and being in the club-then you tell me who's fucking whom?.

A. Magnus's picture

Look, just because you were a Nazi guard for the Bush family doesn't mean your facts are straight; first I don't eat cat food and second, I don't control 40% of the wealth in this country and I am a 'Joo.' If you could be any more full of shit your eyes would be brown...

trav777's picture

you're just a dumb jew I guess.

Because what you say doesn't refute what he says.

Do you think that if you took all jews and all wealth and found that group 1 had an intersection of 40% of group 2 that this is somehow invalidated by the fact that ONE PERSON, aka you, has jackshit?

This is why it's important to understand the bell curve; you're clearly way out on the left.

trav777's picture

"Lots"?  Don't ever say lots as part of any argument because it's a nonquantifiable term, IDIOT.

If you looked at a county by county map and you did overlay with % joo, you'd see some things pop right out.

California is 40M people, there aren't 40M fkin jooz in the entire world.

garcam123's picture

No doubt about it.  Dumping 84 billion dollars a month into this economy is driving prices up and up and when you have $ 32.00 a week left over to buy food and gas to get to your shit sucking job, what does that leave for anthing?

This can't go on much longer.  Hungry people don't really care about dying.  They care more about taking some "priviledged" piece of shit out with them.  I expect it to explode this summer when it gets real hot and there is no money for AC OR food!

The cops are going to be hiring, because of losses,  but I don't think theres going to be many new hires because they will have a life expectancy of about 2 weeks.

Shit is going to start happening and Pres OBee ain't gonna have shit to say about it. The brothers know this trick ain't gonna do nothin for them.  They're already calling him Tom!

American soldiers aren't going to kill their fellow citizens, they're going to attack the terriorists, the ones hiding in police uniforms.  Get ready America!  The fight of the ages is getting ready to start!  Maybe even in your yard!

Good luck, protect your children, God Bless America!

willwork4food's picture

With luck, most will realize it's not the police worker's fault we are in the shit hole we're in, but the esteemed members of Congress in DC. I wonder what they'd do if 10% of us march to DC-fully armed- to DEMAND the heads of the fuckers. Would they call in the military? Would the military obey?

otto skorzeny's picture

as long as the checks keep clearing-the great majority of the military and cops(who are mostly PTSDed ex military) will follow orders-does a little thing like Germany in the 30s ring a bell?

Westcoastliberal's picture

Yes, and yes. In a heartbeat.  What do you think those 3 Billion rounds of hollowpoints are for?

BooMushroom's picture

Sure, the whole mess isn't the cops' fault, but if he's the one standing between you and the downed tree you need to chop to survive through the winter, or he's the one between you and the food, you might take it out on him anyway.

Prometheus418's picture

Doesn't matter whose "fault" it is.  The police roll onto my block tomorrow, they'll be leaving in black bags.  We'll lose in the end, but nobody here is going quietly.  Lots of Gadsen Flags and gardens in my neighborhood.

Five8Charlie's picture

I think there is a reason for the full-court press on gun restrictions - and it has nothing to do with Sandy Hook. Crimes by sick people have happened all the time, unfortunately. Why dial up the anti-gun propaganda now?

If I was the one running this circus, I'd be starting to get a little concerned about data like this and what it might mean if people began getting a little restless over it. Best to take away their means to express displeasure now before doing so becomes ... more difficult.

The time to learn who your friends really are is getting close...

blu's picture

"Best to take away their means to express displeasure now before doing so becomes ... more difficult."

They might be getting nervous, sure.

However it is virtually impossible to imagine a scenario where the federal or state governments enact (least of all, enforce with any hope of success) gun confiscation the likes of which you seem to be implying in your comment.

300 million guns in the hands of US citizens living in a country the size of the US will remain 300 million forever and everyone on the face of the planet knows this.

The mechanism to change that reality in any downward direction simply cannot exist outside of badly conceived fiction or drug-induced delirium.

Or one well-placed nuclear strike.

* By which I mean, stir up a revolt in Texas or Idaho, nuke it, and watch the rest of the sheep get right in line.

BooMushroom's picture

I'm pretty sure that deploying nuclear weapons against American Citizens in the USA, that would be the moment that everyone runs out their front door, gun in hand.

Prometheus418's picture

Not a chance.  That's the moment 85% or better line up for FEMA camps and vote to kick the terrorists' collective asses.

Guns in hand will come from energy or food riots, and little else- we've been trained for years to passively stand behind the stars and bars, and logical thinking has very little to do with it.

As much as I hate the idea with every fiber of my being, a false flag nuke is the absolute safest way for our gov't to lock everyone down.

Five8Charlie's picture

I hope that you are right and I am wrong. But 'hope' is not the same thing as a plan - as we, the people, seem to have either forgotten or never learned. So, I will plan accordingly.

"300 million guns in the hands of US citizens living in a country the size of the US will remain 300 million forever and everyone on the face of the planet knows this."

"Forever" is a long time. The United States has changed a lot in my lifetime - I suspect there will be changes in the future.

ZeroAvatar's picture

Honestly, the trick to all this is to remain patient:  Something will ignite the tinderbox, be it:  EBT cards don't work, Russia pre-emptive nuke strike, Israeli strike on Iran, Jackboots kicking in people's front doors at 3:00am when it's 5 degrees outside, Mexican drug dealers invade US border, I don't know.

What I do know, is, people like douchinger talk the talk, oh, boy, do they......but will they walk the walk?  There's a whole lotta 'USA USA GUNS GUNS' types out there fomenting 'la revolucion',  but when the first doors start getting kicked in, will the douchebags actually GET OUT THERE AND FIGHT with you, or just lock their front doors and curl up next to their warm computer server?

I get the feeling there's a lot of OWS-type jackasses out there who run their mouths but when the chips are down are just a buncha punks.

Don't get drawn in early.  Don't fire until you see the yellows of their drug-dilated jaundiced eyes. Defend your home, and your family for now.  The time to defend the Constitution will make itself known, soon enough.  No one can do any good from a Fema cell, or worse, dead.
