US Mint Out Of Silver Coins - Suspends Sales

Tyler Durden's picture

As we noted earlier this month, the demand for both gold and silver 'physical' coins has been record-breaking as 2013 began. So much so, that now after selling over 6 million silver coins in 2013 so far, the US Mint has run out of silver eagles and has suspended sales. Furthermore, the Mint is saying that it will not restart sales until January 28th! With all asunder proclaiming victory and crisis averted based on the nominal price of stocks at five-year highs, Swiss interest rates no longer negative, and Spanish bond yields at 5%, it seems there are still a few that demand the wealth-preserving safe-haven of hard assets as the escalation of the currency wars shows no sign of abating.

Authorized Purchasers,

The United States Mint has temporarily sold out of 2013 American Eagle Silver Bullion coins.  As a result, sales are suspended until we can build up an inventory of these coins.  Sales will resume on or about the week of January 28, 2013, via the allocation process.

Please feel free to call us if you have any questions.

Regards,

Jack A. Szczerban

Branch Chief, Precious Metals Group

Department of the Treasury

the true panic in the fiat system will occur only when the retail starts taking good delivery bars (1000oz) off the exchanges.  not stupid eagles, but good delivery bars.  eagles are already de-leveraged, but good delivery bars are leveraged, presumably, 100x.  every time a silver 1000oz bar is taken off comex, at least 100000 of paper derivatives is destroyed.

Physical demand anywhere competes with good delivery bars, ultimately, since it diverts supply away from them. Every 1000 eagles (or 1000oz used in industry, jewelry, whatever) is one less potential bar for COMEX to lie about.

The true panic won't be when retail takes bars, but the moment anyone with a COMEX contract stands for delivery over what COMEX actually has, and god knows they're likely lying about inventories like crazy, just as they were right before the MF Global implosion.

Given MFG, however, I suspect serious physical players probably aren't willing to risk losing capital to the next implosion, which is letting COMEX play the paper game with impunity. The COMEX panic may be a long time in coming.

That doesn't mean we won't see a major separation between physical and paper pricing well before that, though.

not neccessarilly,

Every 1000 eagles (or 1000oz used in industry, jewelry, whatever) is one less potential bar for COMEX to lie about

just because somebody is buying 1000 eagles doesnt mean somebody else is not selling his/her 1000 eagles on ebay, etc.  Taking delivery of comex bar directly destroys 100x more derivatives immediately while leaving existing inventory, already de-leveraged, intact.  in other words, instead of retail buying from retail, retail taking delivery of comex bar hits the system immediately.  needless to say, nearly same effect can be achieved if every retails buys and holds (hords).  When i say "nearly", i mean that the mint can suspend sales and wait for miners to supply comex bars, which negates the direct hit comex would take if retail lined up for comex bars (and did not flip them some short time later).

I should have clarified -- 1000 eagles from the US Mint, as that's new production, just like consumption from industry or new jewelry, etc. Obviously resale on any of those won't impact COMEX.

Just FYI for anyone interested in small denominations - Speaking of rare - 1 gram bars are VERY hard to find (and usually very overpriced). Gainesville Coins is selling 100 X 1 gram divisable ValCambi bars right now. They had 31 left last time I checked. Here's the link http://www.gainesvillecoins.com/products/163272/100-x-1-gram-divisable-s...

yeah but GVille wants 17 over spot per oz!  100 grams is 3.215 ounces.  They want 157 bucks for it before shipping.  That's about a 55% markup before you even calculate shipping.

I'd pass on that one folks...

just sayin'

Wow. Tough crowd. But to put the price in perspective, here's what a gram will generally cost you from a big dealer http://www.apmex.com/Product/59779/1_Gram_Silver_Bar___Mint_Varies___999... - that's $1.79 over spot per gram = $55.67 per troy once! And that's still cheap compared to most 1 gram bars you can find from a reputable dealer. I probably just shouldn't have said anything though - I sound like an advertisement, and that's not what I intended. Sorry about that, but maybe it is useful to someone :)

Thnx stuman. I wonder if John Williams over at Shadow Stats still sees $200 silver?

Aug 20, 2012 – $200 an ounce is what John Williams predicts silver may rise to in the near future in reaction to debasement of fiat (and electronic) money.

...and there's Rob McEwen:

I can see it but many things move together. My off-the-cuff math with scaling on the scatterplot - keep in mind silver could do 7x (2011 dec 27 gold 07 | 10 years gold vs silver scatterplot ) rather than 2.72x - is gold for 3340/oz matching silver to 200/oz (usd, oz troy). Given so many pros expecting 5000/oz gold this does not surprise me even for one second. I would like to know (I probably could by making the time for a detailed scatterplot) how oil, gas, fertilizer prices & even farm-land would be priced at the exact same time as that 3340 & 200 price-pair. Probably fairly scary numbers. The one thing I can be sure WON'T go up to match is savings and/or wages.

Why is the treasury now selling silver and gold coins after they took them away in the 30's? Ever think they are manipulating the price so they can make good on coins? They are probably making 75 percent profit on these little coins.  Watch what happens.  Once they max out what they are selling the price tanks and they buy them back for a song, or you can be left holding the bag. Think about it, what good is it if this stuff just sits in a vault for them?  Sell High Buy Low, just like the mortgage market. The US mines about 250 billion tons of gold a year and See ya later suckers.

I'd say your main problem with 'rounds' is recognition... You KNOW a ASE when you see it... Same thing for "junk" [pre '64 dimes, quarters, halves, & dollars]...

They also have different reportability requirements. At the moment ASEs are still exempt, to my knowledge, very few other silver items aren't.

(100oz bars, junk silver, etc all have reporting requirements.) For the time being I think that makes ASEs somewhat more attractive as well.

depends on who you think wants them later. 90% silver coins, .9999 fine silver bars/coins, .9999 fine gold coins (0.1 oz & 1 oz, combibars) each have preference to specific people for barter.

for those wanting to trade for paper sooner it makes less sense but there is no counter-party risk.

For those wanting paper even sooner & even more of it, quickly converted to other tangibles (maybe also to metals) there's Options and/or Margin trades. Do what you dare, don't blame anyone for your losses but yourself - we know the market is manipulated, we know the fiat currency is collapsing, we know certain nations respect rights more than others so for every decision we make to stay/go buy/sell/hold and to read/ignore ... we bear our own (yen?) cross.

7 years to return the gold to Germany? With China importing record amounts of gold this past year, migt they be trading in their US paper for our gold? Exporting our gold to China?

Goodness,

this really brought out the PM bugs. One would think the price of silver would be moon-bound.

But it is not. Why is that?

I really don't know. I've been waiting to get more at cheaper prices nd I see this as a ploy to draw weak hands into the fray.

I could be wrong, but that Sirs, is what makes a market.

I will wait to purchase, Could be wrong but we've seen this dance before.

Regards.

You're shunned because no one can figure out what the hell you're talking about.

There aren't nearly the traders there were here two years ago so the lingo is over a lot of heads and then there's the fact that you have the diction and grammar of a 6th grader, which probably makes a lot of people suspicious of your intelligence, motives, and critical faculties.

To wit,a normal English language sentence looks like my first sentence. Yours would look something like this:

You're/{shunned} b/c no one (bob dabolina PEOPLE?!) can get out hell you're talking/ about/.

I've been curious for a long time if the problem is with your keyboard or your brain. Don't take this the wrong way. It's an honest question.  Actually, I came to the conclusion that you're not a real person, but some kind of HFT algo sentience and an primitive attempt at human social interaction.

"Checkbook IRA"

Thanks to whoever put up the number last week for;

Assett Exchange Strategies

David Hibbetts 512-610-7251

The deal is you can set up an LLC, transfer your IRA money into it and buy physical that you can hold in your hand!! (EDIT- It is costing a couple grand to get it all done, so if you only have a little in your IRA it probably doesn't make sense.)

I did it and it works great. Tell David you read about it on ZH, maybe he will start advertising and helping TD out.

-or-

Google up "Checkbook IRA", there are a ton of places that will walk you through it and help with the forms etc.

I live in The Peoples Republic of Illinois but set up my LLC in Wyoming so the rat bastards can't get their thieving hands on it.

Which brings me to the silver shortage....I don't have my "checkbook" yet but was poking around the usual sites looking for 20,000 ounces of silver to help balance my stack and I think if things don't loosen up a bit I am going to have to go to several sources.

Why the premium on monster boxes? I grabbed 1,000 ounces right after New Years and they wanted more for boxes so I ordered them loose and they sent me two boxes anyway. I guess there is some sort of cache' associated with having it in a monster. I don't give a shit either way.

As always, DYODD.

Slightly OT, but maybe not ...

Seems Jim Willie agrees with my prediction of a rising Asian monetary system knocking USD out of reserve currency status.

Euro?  No.   SDR?  No.

A new pan-Asian PM-backed currency.  Maybe Yuan, maybe not.  I don't know what it will be, maybe nobody knows at this point, but I can see things moving in that direction and it appears JW does also.

From his article...

NEW ASIAN TRADE ZONE

The division between East and West actually accelerated when the extremely ill-advised decision for Iran sanctions was made by an increasingly desperate United States Govt and its handler on the Southern Med.

The climax event of the Asian trade zone conference held in Vietnam could not have been more important, as they rejected the US-led plan. The Asians partners and players even rejected the United States from the entire Asian trade zone, but did include Australia and New Zealand.

A Paradigm Shift is taking place, and the ASEAN-China summit gave proof positive in a seminal event of the vast changes in progress. The United States just suffered its worst humiliation ever as a nation on the Eastern global stage. It was exceeded only by the humiliation for a US president personally.

As good as the analysis is, JW isn't telling the full story.  It's not just an economic / monetary alliance.  It's a full-on thermonuclear alliance against the west, the only thing that will prevent the US from torpedoing their new monetary system and currency.

Yes, the thermonuclear card will come out.  US govt will be given the thermonuclear ultimatum, back off, stand down, shut the fuck up and behave, or be nuked, and that goes double for Israhell.

Of course you won't hear about that part on MSM.  US govt will back down and MSM will give all kinds of stupid idiotic reasons for it.

When USD loses reserve status, its fall to nothing will be fast.  As it falls, America falls with it.

Cut off from China, India, Germany, probably Japan too, we'll have to start producing stuff here again, and we don't have the manufacturing base for it.  Along with collapsing currency we'll see severe shortages of critical components for just about everything except toothbrushes and toilet paper.

Yes Germany will be part of that rising Asian alliance.  See this comment for more details on Germany's role.

Many here want to see the end of the Fed / US dollar / Wall Street ponzi.  Ok, the Asian alliance will do it, and reasonably soon too.  You should be happy.  Granted, it'll be anarchy and civl war here, but that's the penalty we incur for letting this govt get so far out of control.

I've been commenting about this rising Asian Nuclear Alliance over a year now.  Glad others like JW are starting to see it.

Yes, I agree, it will probably end up the way you see it, maybe worse.

It's happened before..

Too many people, too few leaders, enery one is right and every one is wrong.  The socio economic balance is between the shoeless and thos who have shoes is out of whack.

All one can do these days is pray and hope whatever is being prayed to is listening and can make a difference.

Methinks this view is supported by China's accumulation of gold over the last year or two, which continues. They wouldn't be doing that for fun. But I think it'll be some time before other Asian countries join China in a single currency backed by gold. Perhaps it'll be a basket of FX-managed currencies backed by gold. And there's no love lost between China and many smaller Asian countries (which I guess many of them see as dominant, like Germany is in the EU).

Apart from that, have they learnt nothing from the twin disasters known as "The European Union" and "The Euro"?

IMHO a pan-Asian single currency is not a solution to anything. It would need all the same things that  the EU needs: political union and fiscal union.

The future should be smaller national economic units with convertible currencies and locally set interest rates, all controlled by themselves, not by some great federal monster run by gravytrainers.

Ref: "a pan-Asian single currency is not a solution"

Sure it is, if the single currency is freegold and each nation's fiat floats freely against it.

Works for the whole world, not just Asia.

I'll be back there in a few weeks, taking care of some familial responsibilities.  Such a sad city to behold.  In my parents' youth it was beautiful and prosperous.  Today it is a pathetic, broken shell of what it once was.
Nobody who has never been there can appreciate the extent of its downfall.

My own former car aficionado days have taken a back seat, as it were, to my more recent lifestyle downsizing, driving a 17 year-old pickup these days instead of sportscars.

Vlad, I understand your skepticism, but I have learned after many years that sometimes a highly intelligent individual can hide, purposely or inadvertently, behind a cryptic or fragmented communication style.  My best friend in high school was very intelligent, but dyslexic, and could not even recite the alphabet in order, or the months of the year, yet managed to receive mostly "A" grades in all his classes.

YenCross can be elusive in his comments, and not infrequently abrasive (as I can be also), but I think there is more behind him than may meet the eye.
