Syria Threatens "Surprise" Response To Israel Air Raid; Iran And Russia Pile In

Tyler Durden's picture

In the aftermath of yesterday's surprising attack by Israel on Syrian soil, an act which any prior justification notwithstanding is a clear act of war sovereign aggression, it was only a matter of time before Syria responded, at least diplomatically at first. And as we also noted yesterday that "Iran has previously warned that any attack on Syria is the same as an attack on Iran" it was safe to assume that Iran would have a thing or two to say in response as well. Earlier today they did just that, with Syria warning that a "surprise" response to the Israel attack is forthcoming, while the "Iranian deputy foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian said the attack "demonstrates the shared goals of terrorists and the Zionist regime... It is necessary for the sides which take tough stances on Syria to now take serious steps and decisive stances against this aggression by Tel Aviv and uphold criteria for security in the region." Finally yesterday we wondered "how Russia and/or China which have made clear that Syria is a strategic geopolitical center for both in the past will react", and today we know: "Russia, which has blocked Western efforts to put pressure on Syria at the United Nations, said that any Israeli air strike would amount to unacceptable military interference." So far nothing from China, which has in the past let Russia be its proxy on Syrian matters.

And while the rhetoric has soared on all sides, it remains to be seen if Syria will indeed challenge Israel or if it will retain its bluster, an act which will simply invite Bibi to launch ever more offensive sorties until one day something finally does snap.

From Reuters:

Syria protested to the United Nations on Thursday over an Israeli air strike on its territory and warned of a possible "surprise" response.

The foreign ministry summoned the head of the U.N. force in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights to deliver the protest a day after Israel hit what Syria said was a military research centre and diplomats said was a weapons convoy heading for Lebanon.

"Syria holds Israel and those who protect it in the Security Council fully responsible for the results of this aggression and affirms its right to defend itself, its land and sovereignty," Syrian television quoted it as saying.

The ministry said it considered Wednesday's Israeli attack to be a violation of a 1974 military disengagement agreement which followed their last major war, and demanded the U.N. Security Council condemn it unequivocally.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed "grave concern". "The Secretary-General calls on all concerned to prevent tensions or their escalation," his office said, adding that international law and sovereignty should be respected.

Russia, which has previously made it very clear it will not tolerate US intervention in what it considers it own backyard, was quick at passing judgment:

"If this information is confirmed, we are dealing with unprovoked attacks on targets on the territory of a sovereign country, which blatantly violates the U.N. Charter and is unacceptable, no matter the motives," Russia's foreign ministry said.

Finally, Iran:

An aide to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday Iran would consider any attack on Syria as an attack on itself.

Yet the local Syrians, like most, are very skeptical this war of words will escalate into anything more:

In battle-torn Damascus, residents doubted Syria would fight back. One mother of five said she had heard retaliation would come later. "They always say that. They'll retaliate, but later, not now. Always later," she said, and laughed.

"The last thing we need now is Israeli fighter jets to add to our daily routine. As if we don't have enough noise and firing keeping us awake at night."

Then again, provoking a Syrian retaliation has been the plan all along. Which is why moments ago, just to keep Plan B afloat, Reuters blasted that:

  • WHITE HOUSE SAYS IRAN'S INSTALLATION OF ADVANCED URANIUM ENRICHMENT CENTRIFUGES WOULD BE PROVOCATIVE STEP IN VIOLATION OF U.N. RESOLUTIONS

Cue more photoshopped pictures of WMDs.

all I remember from my 'childhood' school yard dayz was that the 'nuns' would, for the MOST TRIVIAL VIOLATION of standards & ethics, make me stand in the corner of the play yard [with my back to the kids playing foursquare & jumping rope]... & hold two BIBLES [at shoulder height & arm's length]... until my ARMS were ready to fall off...

Nothing used to piss me off more than people (teachers/elders/authority figures) like Ban Ki-Moon who let one kid slap you over and over all the while telling you to remain calm and not retaliate or you'll be in trouble.  Then the father (US) comes and picks the bully up and you see them high-fiving as they drive off.  Double-fucking-standards and hypocrisy.

Henry Kissinger himself was quoted to say Israel won't be here next decade ...

Dovetailing with the view of radical Israel journalist Barry Chamish, that the Israeli state is a tool to be used to commit horrible international crimes, to totally disgrace the name and tradition of Judaism, and then the Israeli state will be thrown away like rubbish:

« Reported to me, Henry Kissinger has stated — and I quote the statement word for word: "In 10 years, there will be no more Israel."

I repeat: "In 10 years, there will be no more Israel." ... »

« Sixteen US intelligence agencies with a combined budget over USD70 billion have issued an 82-page analysis titled 'Preparing for a Post-Israel Middle East.' ...

Interestingly, neither Henry Kissinger nor the authors of the US Intelligence Report give any sign that they are going to mourn the demise of Israel. This is remarkable, given that Kissinger is Jewish ... »

Any Syrian retaliation would get an immediate response from Israel. The Israeli government uses their vast, US funded, military superiority to inforce a leverage of terror. Israel can stike anyone anywhere and at anytime. Any such actions by others is terrorist threats to Israel. Lets face it, the side with ALL the military power and the full backing of the 1 trillion dollar a year US military machine can attack any minor state in the Middle East at will.

Syria can hardly hold off the US backed Al-Qaeda and the NATO backed FSA, adding Israel to the list would hardly be a smart move by Assad. He is in a no win position and Israel knows it.

The Syrian research facility was claimed as a mortar target by the FSA. Most media says a Hexbolla arms convoy got the air stirke. This may or may not be true, but for now it makes the most sense.

Mighty empires build mighty armies, Over time these armies become a heavier and heavier financial drag on the economy so eventually the empire either defaults or debases the currency to its destruction in an attempt to keep paying their bills. When they can't afford them anymore their armies crumble and someone else takes over. Happened lots of times in history, but people nowadays don't know their history so they have to learn it the hard way.

I'd say that would be a fairly even fight.....that would prove VERY destructive. I think the concept of MAD is well known by all, but a lengthy ground conflagration would be devastating to a world on ther brink.

I disagree, it would be opposite of devastating. It cause manufacturing to soar to meet the need of the mighty MIC War Machine and many people would die leading to a population reduction. nothing new about Israel extending its middle finger to the UN Charter, or UN Resolutions, or international law.

And when they dropped white phosphorus on the Pals, it wasn't a war crime - because it's not a crime when Israel does it.

Comments section in the NYT on the Hagel confirmation spectacle is both heartening and troubling.

How is it that this country sacrificed hundreds of thousands of young men in WWII and US and Israeli Jews still think we owe them our blood and treasure so that they can wrest the old Mandate from people who've lived there for hundreds, even thousands of years?

The unbridled arrogance of this assumption... it's uniquely Jewish, I think. Perpetually 'apart' and 'special' and 'unique' - spare me the antisemite shit, I did study the OT and the text is absolutely rife with racism and criminality... it would get a pass, but for the fact that these myths are the core, not some fringe aspect of the text.

And no, Virginia, they aren't the direct decendents of the ancient Hebrews - who stole it from the Phoenicians, anyway, and ruled over a small portion of it for no more than a few hundred years.

http://www.jesusneverexisted.com/chosen-people.html

I don't want to see Israel destroyed and wish them the best - but every American Jew who spends their time trying to get the US to risk its blood and treasure for their ethnarchy can go right ahead and fuck themselves.

Wilcat - since you've studied the OT / Jewish Bible, you must understand that the God described there loves some and hates others.  If that God actually exists, we don't get to tell him how he should live his life, and what his emotions should be in order to be "fair".  He will do as he damn well pleases - and we, along with Job, will have no choice but to accept it.  Either that, or commit suicide.  But if the God of the OT / Jewish Bible is real, suicide won't be any escape either.

On the other hand, if the God of the OT / Jewish Bible is not real, why doesn't Iran just drive the Zionists into the sea and be done with it.  I'm certain that the "Palestinian's" in Gaza and the West Bank can make better use of the land than the Zionists have.

Finally, what difference does it make if the folks there are the "right" Jews or not.  They could all be Norwegian, for all it matters.  The issue is whether one group should be allowed to take real estate away from another group.  The Muslims think that is a fine way to live, because they have done it to each other forever.  If you are not familiar with the Hamas Covenant, you would do well to read it.  Pay particular attention to Article 11:

When the leaders of the Islamic armies conquered Syria and Iraq, ... The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. ...  This is the law governing the land of Palestine in the Islamic Sharia (law) and the same goes for any land the Moslems have conquered by force, because during the times of (Islamic) conquests, the Moslems consecrated these lands ...

http://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/hamas.asp

From  now on, I expect to see this quote spread all over ZH in posts that deal with the Middle East.  This quote supports the only idea that counts:  Anybody sufficiently powerful has the right to "conquer" any land in the Middle East.  Might makes right.  We know this is the correct position to take, because it is enshrined in Point 11 of the Hamas Charter.  Hamas believes this, and by extension, so do all who support them.  If they truely did not believe that might makes right, they would not support Hamas - who, in their own Charter, admit that they rule over lands taken from other people.  And then they fight the Zionists, because the Zionists are wrong to have done what Hamas admits to doing in its own Charter.

Idiots.

I think that the point you are missing in Article 11 (and I don't agree with it, just pointing this out) is that the lands now belong to 'Moslems' because the 'consecrated' it (whatever that entails).

I get your point.  What I was pointing out is how they acquired those lands.  Which is/was, in the same manner that they criticize the Zionists for aquiring the land of Israel.  By force.  If it's OK for them to do that, they cannot legitimately criticize others for doing the same thing to them.  So, all we are left with is might makes right.  Unless we agree to adhere to some more civilized way of behaving.  Good luck with that.

That 'Jesus never existed' site you link, is very interesting and provocative, whatever one's views

Even for those of us who are religious and spiritually inclined, it is a rich historical discussion there

A lot of good material, like how the compassionate remarks attributed to Jesus also echo the writings of the Roman stoic philosopher Seneca who was forced to commit suicide under Emperor Nero, with the Gospels written at a later date

But the site author, Kenneth Humphreys, for all his detail and data, neglects how for Protestants it is 'faith alone' which does not need historical 'proof'

He over-does the 'never existed' part, but himself admits that 'Jesus' was a common name in ancient Roman Palestine

And ultimately, the vision of life he has as a non-believer, science & etc., feels rather cold and empty

But a great site on religious history overall, even for us 'backward believers'

I'm replying to my own post to share my thoughts.  After WW2, we were the hero of the free world, we could do no wrong.  We used foreign aid along with the promise of protection and promises of prosperity to any nation who would allow us to establish our foothold.  We supported dictators who could enslave their own people to deliver spoils to US, the great protector nation.  We supported any faction who would battle the nations of the so called not free world, even though those same factions would later become our enemy.

Now in between all of this, we capitalized on all the resources each nation could provide till they smartened up.  Now what?  OK, spread democracy and the US will support the resistance.  Then they will love US again and we can resume our spoil taking.  Listening Saudies?  Things aren't working out though cause our two main not free world buddies aren't about to let that happen, along with the deeply ingrained hatred the people ensalved by our puppet dictators have against US.

Now, the people enslaved that hate US?  No problem, we say they are terrorist and WTF, we have a war on terrorism so we can just kill them all.

However, our two not free world buddies /sarc, we want no poblem with cause they're not going to take any shit from US.  Not saying we can't beat them, but even if we win, we lose.

I could go on and on about our corporate infiltration to try to US the world, which BTW took most of our jobs away yada, yada, yada.

How did Israel become the US Crown Prince?  They were smarter than US.  They infiltrated every powerful entity in the US.  It took a long time but they made it.

Just like i'm sick of all the central bank interventions which solve nothing and just postpone the collapse.

OK, so satanic psychopathic zionists murder some people and attack an innocent sovereign country. What else is new? It is not as if we expect anything else from the satainc psychopaths.

It is very disturbing that the good people in the United States of America have put their trust in murderous psychopaths who protect and defend those trying to bring destruction to the human race and that we have fallen victim to the lies of the satanic psychopathic zionists.

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 16:12 | 3203692 Mr. Hudson

Americans are very dumb people. If it wasn't "the satanic psychopathic zionists" (as you put it) that Americans "fall victim to", it would be some other special interest group. Ben Franklin answered the woman who asked of him: "Mr. Franklin, what sort of government have you given us?" that the founding fathers "gave the Americans a Republic", but then added "if you can keep it". We didn't, so we lose.

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 18:13 | 3204149 Totentänzerlied

"that the founding fathers "gave the Americans a Republic""

And therein lies the problem with the Enlightenment-era statist propaganda known as the "social contract". How did America's government come about? Why it was set up in a series of secret, closed-door meetings involving no more than a few hundred persons in total over some 5 or so years, ratified with absolutely no authority and then foisted on the former-colonists - most of whom were functional illiterates, mind you - whom, for reasons no one likes to talk about, acceded with nary a shot fired. Yadda yadda yadda, 200 years later, their mistake is now our fate.

In case I didn't make it clear, the founding fathers were in every sense of the word usurping statist aristocratic oligarchs who helped cause a legitimate insurrection and then lead a (bloodless) "coup" once the revolution was complete. Does this sound familiar? Well, that's because it is exactly the same pattern followed by virtually all so-called socialist revolutions.

Very good points. I always wondered why the loving founding fathers didn't take surveys from the local populace (who had fought against the British) as to exactly what the colonists wanted from their new government.

What did the Syrians (and Iran's and Russians) expect. They were transferring SA-17's!  These are not little shoulder fired rockets you can pick up at K-mart.  It's an 18 foot long missile with an engagement range of over 30 miles and 80,000 feet altitude.  It flies north of mach 4 and uses a phased array radar, not some easily jammed relic of the 1960's.  In transferring that kind of tech to a terrorist org, they knew they were crossing a bright red line.

That they are giving away this kind of gear speaks volumes to the Syrian regime's assessment of its future.

Not really trying to be pro-Israel. Just pointing out the obvious.  There's lots of grey lines in the Middle East, but everybody knows where the bright red lines are, e.g. If Iran nukes up, Saudi Arabia nukes up, if Iraqi kurds create a Kurdish state, Turkey invades, if someone gives Hezbollah advanced tech, Israel shots first and asks questions later.

I suspect the Russians are a little pissed.  They gave Syria the SA-17's to defend high value sites after Israel bombed Syria's nuke reactor in 2007, not to pass out like candy.

1. where you got the info about SA 17?

2. how you can say where the convoy was heading? if it was convoy.

3. would it be ok if Russia attacked American missiles in Poland or Iran Patriots in Turkey?

4. what terrorist organization you have in mind? And who declared them terrorists?

5. which K-mart sells shoulder fired rockets?

6. arming AQ in Syria does not cross any bright red lines in your mind?

1. It's fairly widely known. Get a subscription to Janes.

2. Why my handy, dandy KH-12 satellite, of course.

3. No, but that's not a logical comparison.  You need a more dispationate view.  A better comparsion would be, "Would it be ok if Russia attacked a Georgian convoy of Improved Hawk missiles headed for Abkhazia?"  There.  Fixed it for you.  The answer is, "OK. No. Expected. Yes."

4. Hezbollah took credit for killing 241 Americans in a 1983 bombing who were part of a UN peacekeeping mission, so it's not unreasonable to define them as a terrorist organization.  If you are a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, Al Quds, Hamas, and/or IRG I can see how you might be offended.

5. The ones in Pakistan.

6. Nope. The Russians would think less of us if we didn't.  Actually, they think we are complete pussies for doing so little.  Really, though, the Saudi's are probably doing most of the heavy lifting at this point.  Remember, Syrian regime is a minority Islamic sect, the majority is Sunni.

Anti-Semite as in the 90% of Jews that are Ashkenazi, and therefore have varying amounts of European/Asiatic/Semitic admixture and have genocided actual Semites in Palestine for the last 60+ years?
