Fed Confirms It Was Hacked By Anonymous

Tyler Durden's picture

As was reported on Monday, among the numerous files hacked and leaked in the past week by the Hacker group Anonymous was a database of some 4606 regional bankers together with copious amounts of confidential information, which according to Anonymous' twitter account was sourced at the very Federal Reserve, which in turn would imply that the Fed itself had been hacked.

It would also imply that our rhetorical suggestion from nearly two years ago had actually been taken seriously by Anonymous. To wit, from March 2011: "perhaps in the aftermath of the IMF "very major breach" by anonymous hackers, it is really time to make sure all external access points to FedWire and FedLine are truly safe and sound. It will be very sad if it is uncovered that this source of externally accessible portal to hundreds of billions in emergency Fed funding has been somehow compromised. Just imagine the loss of confidence in the system... Why, a global distributed attack would really stretch the Fed's 1,200-strong police force quite thin." Moments ago the Fed confirmed that it had, indeed, been hacked by Anonymous.

From Reuters:

The Federal Reserve said on Tuesday that one of its internal websites had been briefly breached by hackers, though no critical functions of the central bank were affected by the intrusion.

The admission, which raises questions about cyber security at the Fed, follows a claim that hackers linked to the activist group Anonymous had struck the Fed on Sunday, accessing personal information of more than 4,000 U.S. bank executives, which it published on the Web.

"The Federal Reserve system is aware that information was obtained by exploiting a temporary vulnerability in a website vendor product," a Fed spokeswoman said.

"Exposure was fixed shortly after discovery and is no longer an issue. This incident did not affect critical operations of the Federal Reserve system," the spokeswoman said, adding that all individuals effected by the breach had been contacted.

While it appears that neither FedWire nor FedLine had been hacked, an internal database containing highly confidential login, and various other, information for at least some Fed-related services had indeed been compromised.

The Fed declined to identify which website had been hacked. But information that it provided to bankers indicated that the site, which was not public, was a contact database for banks to use during a natural disaster.

The website's purpose is to allow bank executives to update the Fed if their operations have been flooded or otherwise damaged in a storm or other disaster. That helps the Fed to assess the overall impact of the event on the banking system.

Which in turn means the two most critical, externally-accessible money clearing websites in all of the developed world, remain possible security threats.

As for the contents of the leaked database which was removed from its original resting place in yet another hacked DOJ server, they can still be found in one of the various mirrors created in the aftermath of Sunday night's hack, such as this one.

It's time for Anonymous to put up or shut up, lest they become the boy who cryed wolf.

Truly damning, verifiable info on top Fed officials is required in order for them to redeem their creds as what they purport to be.

Fed officials verify they were hacked by the straw man they set up to hack themselves and release secret info that fed officials are aware that there is more physical gold stored than what is kept on record. Therefore there is no need to audit since the hackers have exposed that info.

A list of bankers personal info is useless. If these guys were out to do something to raise hell, they would inject stuxnet into the printing press controllers or the building's power controllers, frying all of the wiring or they would find the files on secret executive orders and publish them.
Thus far, they have proven themselves to be bright, robin hood mentality whiners who are showing off. Why bother?

I can guaran-damn-tee you that this in no way was a trivial breach. Passwords? Shee-it, that stuff does not get got. Not on today's systems. You password becomes a ginormous hashed number, its never stored in readable form, AND to get to the servers that do the authentication and rights management is almost preposterous.  And this was what they were willing to ADMIT to the public, mind you. So sorry Charlie but they were massively pwnd! outright. I understand from sources that nation-wide there has been a significant uptick in probes which have information only the FED had.

Now, riddle me this, Batman, what number of system administrators across the globe are going to report that they can guarantee that the FedWire et al publicly acknowledged breach (and who in hell knows what the REAL story is), is of no security concern to his management?? the number is very very very small...like NONE.

So, ya think they are going to want to continue those connections???

I'm thinkin', maybe there's a shit load of midnight oil being burned right now.

Very astute observations Spigot.  I wonder if the Berstank's or other criminal banksters immediate schedules have been suddenly altered in the wake of this.  If so it might give an indication of the level of seriousness involved.

Certainly the extent of collusion in illegally manipulating every possible aspect of the world economy for the benefit of a few at the expense of all would be of some interest.

It does appear suspicious:

  1. Why show your cards if you are Anonymous and you just hacked the FED?
  2. If you have that info, why wouldn't you use it to dig deeper?
  3. Why would the FED, a most secure and top secret national entity, confirm a breach of its security?  (i used the term "national" loosely)
  4. Why is it that contact information of critical players is absent?

I'm probably just being hyper-critical.  I'm sure this has nothing to do with the shadow government wanting to shutdown the truth/dissent movement.

Amen. I have a shirt that says End the Fed on the front and on the back has a gold American eagle and says 'sound money for America.' I wear that shirt underneath my intramural jersey in basketball, and once in a while get a person to maybe, just maybe, perhaps ponder what it means.

Also have my 'ineptocracy' shirt that I wear to class some days. It says Ineptocracy:

a system of government where the least

capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the

members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded

with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number

of producers*

At what point will Anonymous go from "Activist" group moniker to "Terrorist" group status signaling drone strikes on occupied basements by unemployed 20 somethings?

Wed, 02/06/2013 - 00:04 | Link to Comment seek
seek's picture

The feds have pretty much already put them in the terrorist group based on recent prosecutions.

I am quite sure if the hackers were operating out of a third world nation where we had both reliable intel on coordinates and an armed drone, they'd be in a crater. As the case stands, it appears the majority of them are in the US and allied countries, which makes dealing with them much messier since it involves a corrupt legal system that still occassionally gets reported on by the media, ala Aaron Swartz. That's if .gov can find them.

I concur. I see a domestic drone strike happening soon. The fact that Anon is not organized provides the problem for the Feds. It is their best defense.

Domestic strikes are yet another item on my SHTF list, those will likely occur within weeks to a few months before whatever "it" is, is over, which means 2015-2018.

There's a huge backlash on arming domestically, indeed even most of the most pro-drone law enforcement figures have spoken publicly about bans on arming them, so it pretty much guarantees that if/when it happens, it will (no surprise) be federal, and if it's not military intervening during an actual attack on the US my guess is there will be political hell to pay.

Also considering how shitty the intel and accuracy of the current drone strikes are, you can be assured non-targeted civilians will be taken out within the first 10 strikes; if that happens, it will likely be one of the defining moments of the collapse -- so much so I wonder if they'll actually go there, regardless of motive.

Wed, 02/06/2013 - 01:33 | Link to Comment dtwn

I just don't see it, as you said, it would be a defining moment, if not the moment of collapse here.  As pessimistic as I am, I think most governements/dictators have some degree of self protection.  They're too narcicistic not to.  While our gov is demonstrating its economic stupidity I highly doubt any drone strikes are going to be occuring here.  I'm pretty sure any administration would be aware that such a move would pretty much result in instant civil conflict.  With the number of guns in this country, that will not end well.

I personally believe that the US will face an Argentina type collapse, complete with riots and quite a bit of civil unrest, perhaps with a bloodless coup thrown in there as well.  I really do believe that Americans will pull together in the end.  The gun issue is the elephant in the room though, could add stability, could cause instability.  As the most armed nation in the history of the world both in rate of ownership and sheer numbers (we have 300,000,000+ guns in the US, the next highest is Germany with only 30,000,000) we are in uncharted territory.

I gave up a long time ago. Some people will just never understand no matter how clearly you illustrate that any tosspot can be a part of 'anonymous'.

It's a laughable 'group' because on the whole they do absolutely fuck all. Anything of any value that does happen is probably from a member or two of another group (as in - a real group) who've done their own thing and don't want it released under their groups name.

I've got a double re-enforced tinfoil hat myself but to the people who think it's all a psyop have no idea how the whole joke started. That's not to say Governments can't use the name to their advantage and may well do, but no way in hell is it a psyop unless everyone on the planet is in on it (since anyone can be 'anonymous')

As been chronicled on this site numerous times, the Fed apparently has been using much of it's money printing to support Euro banks with US operations for many reasons.  One of which is Euro bank exposure to subprime mortgages etc.  The fact that they prefer that not be revealed is just business as usual for the shadow Fed.

Do NOT follow this link or you will be banned from the site!
