Guest Post: Congratulations Charlottesville, Virginia! The First City To Pass Anti-Drone Legislation

Tyler Durden's picture

Via Michael Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

This simple piece of legislation proves that you can make a difference at the local level.  We need a lot more of this type of thing all over these United States.  As I have said many times, it’s not that I am against drones in all capacities; however, we must be vigilant about how these things are used and must have serious safeguards in place to protect civil liberties.  Kudos to the Rutherford Institute for leading the charge here.

From US News:

Charlottesville, Va., has become the first city in the United States to formally pass an anti-drone resolution.

The resolution passed by a 3-2 vote and was brought to the city council by activist David Swanson and the Rutherford Institute, a civil liberties group based in the city. The measure also endorses a proposed two-year moratorium on drones in Virginia.

Councilmember Dede Smith, who voted in favor of the bill, says that drones are “pretty clearly a threat to our constitutional right to privacy.”

“If we don’t get out ahead of it to establish some guidelines for how drones are used, they will be used in a very invasive way and we’ll be left to try and pick up the pieces,” she says.

“With a lot of these resolutions, although they don’t have a lot of teeth to them, they can inspire other governments to pass similar measures,” she says. “You can get a critical mass and then it does have influence. One doesn’t do much, but a thousand of them might. We want this on [federal and state lawmakers'] radars.”

Good for them, but I have a feeling that "national security" supercedes any local or state laws. Some interesting times we are living through. Bizzaro world...

Ha! There is no constititutional right to privacy liekt that councilwoman said. Find it in the constitution. A protectioin writtten on a faded piace of paper won't mean a fucking thing anywasy. Red China had all sorts of constitutional protecitions for its 'citizens' and look what happened there. Maybe a few commentores here are relativiely free - douvtful - but most are slaves to mental habits or there actual bosses.

Speaking of dangerous unmanned flying objects (DUFOS)

Can someone pass a law that forbids Asteroid 2012 da14 from hitting us on February 15th?

OR! Pass a law that forbids Comet ISON (which will be 18 times larger than full moon)

from making all fiat currencies obsolete with it's 11,800 year orbit antics?

And, yes.

I made the videos.

PS. FUCK DRONES <---- old Jedi saying

dwdollar's picture

Let me guess... This law prohibits private citizens from having drones but gives Uncle Scam a wink and a nod. Pathetic...

People keep looking for shreds of hope to help them cope with the dystopian hell they are experiencing.

I bet Krieger voted for him twice

As if Iranians could simply defend themselves by passing anti drone laws

politicians just mad that they didn't get drone manufacturing federal aid to give away "jobs"

This law only works when you back it up with a few missile batteries and a radar system. The sentiment is appreciated though. Any noise making is good at this point.

Besides they forgot to add orbiting spy satellites.

As a + ? for the Iranians:
They did launch a monkey into space and give him a way back,

(or an identical monkey).

tenpanhandle's picture

wait...I thought that was a man that parachuted from space.

another "end of the world" freak.

How very cynical.

I like to console myself equally with this bleak view: that you have a number of rights, some of which are now taken away and replaced with those that won't avail you of anything.

wee-weed up's picture

Did anyone else notice that the "lead-in" graphic shows what has been used in many news graphics as a fleeing (illegal?) immigrant family here fleeing the missile from the drone.

icanhasbailout's picture

It's called the Fourth Amendment, dumbass.

ghengis86's picture

Who were the two fucks to vote against this? Does Placeholder and his bull dyke PIC Janet live there?

Next step then would be making drones a nuisance species covered by game regulations.  Continuous open season, unlimited bag limit.

Happy hunting.

tenpanhandle's picture

Next, next step: New drones will be painted with spots.  Then EPA and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will promptly ban the hunting of the endangered spotted drone. Drone itself will actually enforce that law and fire back.

Are hand-held SAMs (surface to air missiles) covered under the 2nd Amendment? I recall that they were pretty effective against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

The heck with those AR15s and their miniscule bullets. I want some SAMs. And a few LAWs. Anyone know where I can get a Panzerfaust or bazooka?

A Lunatic's picture

According to history, a big Facsicst entity comprising Monsanto, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, DuPont and the U.S. Government got together and created a bunch of States which were to be forever compliant to whatever desires those wise men deemed necessary and proper to the security of their union..........

I think some of these states have decided to NOT go along with anything coming from this Admin, laws or no laws.

We'd all like to see that, but it AIN'T HAPPENING.

Dateline - Washington, D.C. Feb 5, 2014

By act of Congress, on a vote of 98-2 in the senate, Charlottesville, VA has become the new home to the controversial National Toxic Waste Dump.  Though originally planned for Yucca Mountain, it was a complete surprise when Harry Reid introduced this legislation roughly a year ago.

xtop23's picture

@Cursive - Probably not far from the truth.

Perhaps a rider in some utterly forgettable bill that somehow manages to create backdoor profits for him, via ammunition sales to the government from a business created only 6 months prior, in an area mini-mart parking ...... Oh wait.

That guy is a waste of skin.

F. Bastiat's picture

No sympathy here - they got precisely what they voted for.

In 2012, those idiots voted for Hussein Obama 80/20.

Breaking news.....Charlottesville legislative building has just been leveled

by a missile attack. Witnesses said the missiles just seem to come out of the nowhere.

No further details available at this time.

ersatzteil's picture

Just as in TWA Flight 800, the witnesses are drunk, and don't know what they saw. The most likely cause was a gas leak in the building. "Explosive residue" found in the building was due to having hosted troops from Iraq five years prior and in no way supports the likelihood that any kind of missile was responsible for the building's destruction.

CoolBeans's picture

Excellent point...all of these years later and no official report, eh?  Same will happen with Sandy Hook.

Excellent picture of OBOMBA with a drone seen here:  "Don't Drone me Bro!"

palmereldritch's picture

“NBC is reporting that the strike on the New Fallujah research facility completely neutralized the threat of the dreaded WMLs (Weapons of Mass Liberty)...”

sitenine's picture

OMFG...does anyone actually beleive a 'law' is going to keep drones out of their airspace?

F. Bastiat's picture

80% of them voted for Hussein Obama. The answer, for them at least, is definitely affirmative.

Totentänzerlied's picture

The law covers the entire jurisdiction like a giant cloak of tank armor. Or something.

Any other questions?

zero deception's picture

ONe quesiton. Define 'or something.'

mkhs's picture

As a law abiding citizen, you should attempt to detain the criminal drone using whatever means necessary.  Remember, it probably was intent on attacking so you can preemptively attack it.

Cabreado's picture

Of course not.
In the context of "drones," that's the point.

Zoom out a little, recognize the forces in play, extrapolate the results, and cheer on the well-intentioned people of Charlottesville.

sitenine's picture

What the fuck are you talking about? Good intentions accomplish what with who now? You're going to have to be a little more specific.

Cabreado's picture

No, I don't have to be a little more specific.

sitenine's picture

Are you trying to say the sheeple wont stand for it? ROFLMAO! They voted for Obama TWICE, you idiot. And in case you haven't been paying attention, there is no rule of law. None. Zero. Hello? Is this thing on??

magpie's picture

If it is no longer a nation of laws, what is it then
