Dorner's Last Stand - Live Webcast
It appears that the authorities have finally caught up with the infamous LAPD vigilante, who is now engaged in a shoot out with the police in the Big Bear area. Follow his last stand at the following CBS newsfeed live. A separate stream from the inland CHP can be found here.
To those joining in now, here is what you've missed:
A person believed to be the fugitive ex-Los Angeles cop sought in three killings exchanged gunfire with authorities in the San Bernardino Mountains on Tuesday, a law-enforcement official said on condition of anonymity.
The officer requested anonymity because the officer was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.
It's believed Christopher Dorner committed a residential burglary of a cabin where a couple was tied up, the officer said. One of the people was able to get away and make a call.
Authorities responded to the location and gave chase when the burglar fled in a stolen car. Gunfire was exchanged.
The area is in the Big Bear region where a search for Mr. Dorner has been under way since his pickup truck was found there Thursday.
A KCAL-TV reporter in the Angelus Oaks area along Highway 38 reported gunfire in his vicinity. The noise of the gunbattle was broadcast by the station, whose reporter suddenly found himself near the fight. Someone could be heard yelling at the reporter to get out of the area.

1. Dorner makes his last stand on today of all days (which has Barry giving his SOTU address tonight).
2. Militarized police were on scene with fully automatic assault rifles within minutes of CBS reporting.
3. CBS has reminded viewers on several occasions that Dorner claimed to have armor piercing bullets (justify the continual militarization of police).
4. Drones are/were being used to hunt Dorner (but if only they had been ARMED drones...We could have prevented this bloodshed!)

In light of Dorner's accusations that there is rampant and unpunished racism in the LAPD, which has certainly stirred up emotions in the minority community, my question would be, who will get credit for the kill? White, Black or Latino cop? Due to the racially sensitive nature of the situation I am sure this issue is of some importance.

I would add that the power of law enforcement in general is based on the overwhelming majority of people voluntarily following the "rules" of society. When that no longer is the case, anarchy begins. The system is really quite fragile.

Just got on so this may have been commented on.
I urge all of you to read at least part of his manifesto. It does not justify his actions, but it does give one insight into the brutal gang-like nature of big city police departments.

Looks to me like his planning sucked. He may have been a good tactician, but his strategy sucked. If he was half as smart/skilled as he claimed, he would have planned to exit the Big Bear area fast (e.g. using a second vehicle) before law enforcement had a chance to isolate the area. Burning his truck was a good way of focusing the attention of the police, but that should have been a distraction, not to signal that he was nearby.

Obviously anything in excess, especially police power (which we presently have an abundance of), can be harmful. We can debate the optimal level of police presence, but objectively I think it's somewhere substantially less than our current level. However, SOME law enforcement is necessary to optimally effectuate property rights.
