23% Of America Is Illiterate

Tyler Durden's picture

Following on the heels of the dumbing down of the State of the Union speech we noted yesterday, we thought a simple visualization of just how stunningly poor our nation's reading skills really are would be useful. One in five Americans lacks the basic reading skills beyond a 4th grade level - are you one of them?

I used to live in Florida. Its universities had great literacy rates and an "outstandin' corch", our outstanding representative Corrine Brown discussed this. See:

i heard the demagogue in chief saying we (certain special interests of his) DESERVE the vote. to say we 9again certain friends of his he listed them) DESERVE something which is constitutionaly guaranteed is to imply that we no longer have that right (was there a Diebold salesman standing behind him?) to say that also implies that he has taken it from us, and now he wants to give it back, because we deserve it? why do we deserve it? have we been good little ducklings? and if we haven't then we no longer derserve it and must go to bed with no dessert (read votes). thank goodness he approves of us.

Ha!

Its clear now the data is from 2003.

To Wit:

Adult illiteracy costs the US more than $200 billion per year...

But a small bunch of literate fucks put us in a Quadrillion Dollar jam, since 2003.

Don't give me this song and dance about how much the unwashed masses cost when pedigreed cost us so much more.

19% had visual difficulties?

If those 19% were sent an opthomologist to get glasses; how would the stats change?

ZH is trying, so hard, to tell Americans that we are ignorant.

I think we read, when we can see, just fine.

We suffer from Israeliitis. A condition of being deprived of honest discourse.

We, the Gentiles, are being decieved.

The Zionist attempts to deny you a honest vision of this world; twisted by the one they worship at midnight.

They use any means possible. Even stooping so low as to manipulate a nigger to decieve us and feed us lies.

Sorry Mr. President, but you will always be a nigger to your zionist masters and a nigger at the AIPAC lunch.

I support the cause to empower the negro. This country has gone backwards since the civil rights act of 74.

Negros had more power when they were segregated and collectively maintained Black power structure in the segregated neighborhoods.

Has the Zionist helped the negro by dispersing them from their zones?

I say no!

The Zionist is the Negros enemy.

The Jew enslaved the negro by sailing to Africa, and trading rum for slaves, sailing and delivering slaves in exchange for molasses, and the circle of Jew treachery continuous to this day.

The negro blames the white man for his misfortune. It was/is the Khazar who bought and sold the negro.

The Zionist guilt will never be erased, never forgotten. Just look at how they enslave the Palestinians!

The God of Moses will smite all of his chosen ones because he is a cruel and angry God.

The Jews will fuel our cars and heat our homes. They beg to be smitten.

METHINKS Tyler Durden simply posted this article to see how many racist schills would reply with the usual racist crap.

As a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, I was deluged with comments from the CATLICK ex 'Father-In-Law' about how the Joos are the root cause of EVERY PROBLEM IMAGINABLE, many aeons ago.

helping_friendl... ,

You may now go attempt to anally fornicate yourself.

Of course, since your 'member' is smaller than most, you will NOT be successful, and be left alone, with the feeling of loss and failure that seems to be engrained within the alternet 'master trollers' nowadays.

If YOU make your CONTRIBUTION, YOU will get the 'better seat':

Zionists and Athiests and CATLIKS and all lovers of Mammon instead of God are 'open season', as per your current circular logical reasoning evidence.

"Has the Zionist helped the negro by dispersing them from their zones?

I say no!"

Has HATRED of race or races become so prevelant in your reasoning that it is now LAWFUL to eradicate anyone who does NOT agree with your HATRED?

YOU say YES!

When I looked at the data from 2 million homeschoolers I was shocked, shocked.

They averaged in the 85th percentile across all subjects. 35 percentile points higher than the USA mean, thrashing both US public and private school kids.

600,000 Finland kids are considered #1 in the world, but these 2 million USA kids would wipe everybody out if they represented a seperate country. They would be seen as a country of geniuses. They also average 85th percentile across all measures of social development, such as maturity and communication skills.

Sad fact is that an average kid coming from a public school will also get up to the same high level after just 2 years of homeschooling. Naturally, no one from Govco is investigating how they are able to do this. Homeschooling is a gateway drug to a literate society and engineering schools.

Homeschooling is wonderful, but IMHO homeschoolers are merely holding the line on the old American normal. Homeschoolers are mostly self-taught or taught by a few parents with limited time and knowledge. These children would do even better if they had expert teachers or tutors (homeschoolers tend to be mid-lower income and cannot afford private instruction). So it's not that these homeschoolers are so extraordinary, it's that the government schools are so bad.

Kids growing up aren't interested in studying, they're interested in PLAYING and HAVING FUN and EXPLORING and stuff.  Once they get out of school, nobody has TIME to study.....they're all too busy busting their asses trying to stay fed and get laid and make the car payment and rent and fighting inflation and all the rest of the thievin' crook schemes designed to steal their money.  It takes considerable free time as well as an almost peculiar motivation to 'learn' about what's REALLY going on in life.  Simple survival in itself is exhausting and leaves zero energy for intellectual pursuits.

Once a person gets out of 'school' (grade 12), most never read a book again.  They're actually turned OFF by learning.  (I'll admit, it does make your head hurt!).  And who needs to?  Hell, now we have TEE VEE (Freddy:  I know, I know!)  All sorts of bells and sounds and guitars playing and voices with lots of deep basetones and pictures!  My gawd the pictures!  American 'culture' is learned from the BOOB Tube, starting at about age 3.  Cartoons teach our younguns all they need to know about American society.  By the time a kid's 7 or 8, he's been fully indoctrinated.  It's all downhill for most of them from there.

If this is true (and I suspect that it is true), this is both a damning and particularly sad reflection on out "modern" society.

It means reading has become associated with a chore / necessity, not with pleasure, and that cannot be a good thing for our future as a society.

It has OCCURRED to me that there are posters on this site who are not here for a rational discourse regarding differences of opinion.

They seem to be obsessed with posting comments which are condescending and meaningless, and make references to old, dead white people who didn't have the guts to use their real names when authoring books of 'import', such as Samuel Clemens (AKA 'Mark Twain').

That 'PITH HELMET' really becomes you.

That is what the Tories liked to wear when in India and China, in order to deflect the spit that the Opium-crazed victims of the HongKong and Shanhai Banking Cartel (HSBC) heaped upon them in spite.

It just 'struck' me, reading your comment and seeing your 'avatar', that you are not here to contribute; but rather to try to create divisiveness.

If by “creating divisiveness” you mean not marching in lockstep with the members’ prevailing opinions, then I will agree.  As one who has been here since Day Two (and registered when “Anonymous” was no longer permitted), there exists a long body of commentary and articles I have contributed to the site.  Some are merely quips, while others either present opinions or offer data and experiences.

I believe your use of the terms “condescending”, “meaningless” and “divisive” would be defined as disagreeing with you.  In addition, you know full well that anyone who offers an opinion that varies from fairly narrow parameters gets verbally smacked down by the peanut gallery, in ways that are the height of impoliteness, condescension and scorn, and are as far apart from honest debate as could be.  If you disagree with that you are deluding yourself.  Do you wonder why so many of the original members have left for other sites, or who merely read what Tyler writes without ever logging in?

I wonder if you are so quick to admonish those who merely write “gold bitchez”, “fuck Bernanke”, "false flag" (has there ever been a real flag in these folks' minds?), or something about “the Jooos” for the ten thousandth time?

Zerohedge is not your Mama’s womb.  Cut the cord and play, or go away.  Tyler has banned plenty of people over the four years he’s been up and running, and if and when he decides I am a site detraction, he’ll send me packing.  That’s his prerogative, not yours, not mine, not anyone else who visits here.

As for avatars, I chose an historical albeit controversial figure whom I find interesting.  Should I have chosen bouncing boobs or a cult sci-fy figure instead?  Are you really Scottie, and you’ve just beamed back down from the final frontier, or are you as “gutless” as Samuel Clemens?

23pc illiterate, does it mean that 77pc are literate?

'Americanism' at work, just as the non consumers are the primary problem in an overconsumption situation, the small percentage of illiterate has to be the problem.

Ah, if only 100 pc of the population could be literate, what a marvellous future it would be, all the 'american' promises would be delivered on.

But there are those pesky 23 pc illiterate, they are in the path of 'american' evolution...

Thu, 02/14/2013 - 16:15 | 3244010 nofluer

Nope. It's the literate folks that're the problem cause if they weren't literate, then everybody would be the same and there'd be no such thing as illiterate.

If we expand the definition of 'illiterate' to people who don't understand the difference between their/there, your/you're and to/too, that 23% figure would increase to roughly 90%.

The whole formal education thing is overrated in the sense that many Americans are debt slaves to a University education that taught them pretty much nothing of any real use. It definitely wasn't worth what it cost.

Learning is a life long process, many here at ZH are here to learn more about what they don't know and thats a good thing!

A public school teacher was arrested today at JFK International Airport, while attempting to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide rule and a calculator.  At a press conference just before noon today, Attorney General  Eric Holder said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al Gebra movement.  Although he did not identify the man, he admitted that he had been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of Math Instruction.

"Al Gebra is a problem for us" said the Attorney General.  "They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values. They use secret code words like "X" and "Y", and refer to themselves as 'unknowns', but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country.  As the Greek philosopher Isosceles used to say, "There are 3 sides to every triangle".   The Attorney General went on to say "Teaching our children sentient thought processes and equipping them to solve problems is dangerous and puts our Government at risk".

Notice that about 67% are genetically degenerate (mental, learning and other disabilities) - the rest are either too old or are immigrants (cannot do much about the old and immigrants should learn English - less Spanish signs would be a start). The solution is to aggressively trim that 67% as parental genetic testing becomes both widely available and relatively inexpensive. Those incidents tend to occur in families with a history of various problems (mental illness, alcoholism, drug addiction, etc).

Control degenerate's reproduction and 90% of our problems will be solved within a generation or two. (based on research done at Harvard)

If literacy means fully understanding what you read (or hear in the MSM) and being able to draw solid conclusions from it, then the illiteracy rate for humanoid types in America is about 95%. It doesn't help that Hollyweird and the big publishing houses are publishing mostly raw sewage.

Hehe.

My kid is such a wise-ass.

He graded his senior year history teachers worksheet handout at a C+ for spelling, syntax and punctuation errors and handed it back to him with the notation " I wanted to give you a B because I know you worked hard on this but it wouldn't be fair to the other teachers."

Teacher was not amused.
