It Is Twenty Times Easier To Get Into Princeton Than To Get A UK Part-Time Coffee Barista Job

Tyler Durden's picture

As the Brits await anxiously for tomorrow's employment data - with their currency plunging courtesy of reality and Carney's vocal intervention - it appears the job market in blighty is truly dismal. We know it is tough to get into Harvard (5.9% acceptance rate); we recently discussed the difficulty of attaining a flight attendant position at Delta (1.4% acceptance rate - 300 positions for 22,000 applicants); but that's nothing compared to the difficulty in attaining a role at the UK's Costa Coffee. 1700 people applied for 8 positions (0.47% acceptance rate) at a high street coffee house in Mapperley, Nottingham. Just three of the jobs were full-time - and paid between $8 and $15 per hour. Just as in the US, The Daily Mail notes unemployment is actually falling according to official figures, but the demand for relatively low paying jobs tells a different story, as unsuccessful candidates include senior managers with over 15 years experience in retail. The jobs were only listed on the firm's website and on a local building - and attracted this kind of attention leaving the company "amazed at the level of interest."

Not one of the successful candidates (this one works at Baristas Coffee Company: "the fastest growing drive-though espresso company in the Northwest")

and Acceptance rates at Ivy League Schools...

Bottom line: 9.3% admission rate to Princeton vs 0.47% admission rate to Costa Coffee...

Via The Daily Mail,

More than 1,700 job hunters applied for just eight vacancies at a new cafe it emerged today - highlighting the extent of the employment crisis across Britain.

Coffee chain Costa received a staggering average of 212 applications for each post at their new branch in Mapperley, Nottingham.

There were three full-time and five part-time positions with wages ranging from £5.40 to £10-an-hour advertised for the branch which is due to open this Friday.

One of the new team members Heather Davies, 25, today revealed how she feel 'incredibly lucky' to have beaten such tough competition to secure a job at the branch.

Desperate times: More than 1,700 people applied for just eight jobs at a Costa Coffee branch in Mapperley, Nottingham - averaging 212 applications for each job

A spokesman said there had been a 'wave' of applications from graduates to people who worked for HMV and Clinton Cards, both of which recently went into administration. Close to 1,000 workers are being made redundant at the failed music chain after it announced the closure of 66 of its 220 shops across the country last month. Around 550 people working at Clinton Cards - a fourth of its work force - lost their jobs when administrators closed 76 unsold stores last year.
The staggering amount of applications gives a snapshot of how tough the job market still is in the UK as more and more companies go bust.
'Over 90 per cent of the applicants came from Nottingham and we didn't have to advertise that extensively either.
We only listed it on one job website and put a sign up on the building while we were renovating it but the applications just came flooding in.
'I was amazed at the level of interest.'
The TUC said the levels of applicants was indicative of the employment crisis gripping the nation.
TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said: 'These figures show just how desperate people are for any kind of work.
'Ministers claim there are plenty of jobs out there but the reality is that there are far more people chasing those jobs.

England is such a fucking dump of a country.

If you aren't wealthy enough to absorb the incredibly high cost of living in London, which actually has some of the best hotels, museums, cultural institutions, restaurants (contrary to widespread perception), and other amenities in the world, you're paying through the nose in terms of cost of living and taxation to live in nearly any other part of England, which by and large, are just dreadfully depressing (I'm not speaking of Scotland, Wales or Ireland).

To add insult to injury, they have a redonkulous monarchy that 50% of the population gets erections or swollen nipples over, due to  some form of sick perversion (where these people apparently take great pride & satisfaction in supporting a do-nothing, sell-out, ultimate, literal welfare Queen and her little princes and princesses).

I have no antipathy towards the British People, necessarily, but find it fascinating as to how passive the majority of them are in receiving lifelong anal rapings.

Before anyone chimes in with the "[h]ow is the U.S. any better?" question, I'll preemptively answer that most Americans still have a far higher standard of living and face far less regulatory/governmental hassles in their every day lives on all matters, big and small, though we are unfortunately trending precisely in the direction of the bankster-owned "sovereign nation" of England, ruled from the HQ that is the City of London (which is literally owned by private entities- mainly financial ones)-- New York City, specifically Manhattan, is our London.

Being born in America, I can relate to being a "native" American. NOFX to the rescue!

NOFX LYRICS "Don't Call Me White"

Don't call me white, Don't call me white
Don't call me white, Don't call me white

The connotations wearing my nerves thin
Could it be semantics generating the mess we're in?
I understand that language breeds stereotype
But what's the explanation for the malice, for the spite?

Don't call me white, Don't call me white
Don't call me white, Don't call me white

I wasn't brought here, I was born
Circumsized, categorized, allegiance sworn,
Does this mean I have to take such shit
For being fairskinned? No!
I ain't a part of no conspiracy,
I'm just you're average Joe.

Don't call me white, Don't call me white
Don't call me white, Don't call me white

Represents everything I hate,
The soap shoved in your mouth to cleanse the mind
The vast majority of sheep
A buttoned collar, starched and bleached
Constricting veins, the blood flow to the brain slows
They're so fuckin' ordinary white

Don't call me white, Don't call me white
Don't call me white, Don't call me white

We're better off this way
Say what you're gonna say
So go ahead and label me
An asshole cause I can
Accept responsibility, for what I've done
But not for who I am

Don't call me white, Don't call me white
Don't call me white, Don't call me white
Don't call me white, Don't call me white

Agreed.  I've been telling my wife for some time that she needs to come up with either a legit geneology, or at least a BS one.  Her mom looks like she just stepped off the trail of tears, and she looks like Disney's version of Pocahonas (lucky me).  Only fly in the ointment is that the two older kids look like tow-headed English youths (the youngest one favors her mom., with maybe a little Asian mixed in for no apparent reason- they're all stepchildren, so I have no need to find out why, just help them leverage the cards they've been dealt.)

All it would take is a family photo, and there wouldn't be an offical entity in the US that wouldn't STFU and hand those kids anything they asked for.  Hell- I'm 75% Irish, but people think I'm latino more often than not.  For all the instutionalized racist shit, most people couldn't tell a Celt from a Mexican if their lives depended on it.  It's a bullshit system, and we all know it- but there it is, and everyone else is apparently using as hard as they can.  May as well preserve *some* "white oppressor" genes for posterity, as long as the idiots in charge are rigging the game.

Not to be an ass about it- I don't care one way or the other, but the numbers suggest that if we don't reverse current trends, caucasian will be an endangered species soon.  For my part, my genetic branch of the family tree dies with me, so good luck to the rest of you.  With any luck, my choices mean I get to be out of the game after this go-round- but I do love my stepkids nonetheless, and if I have to teach them to lie to survive, I will.

the only valid question is which criminal elite allowed the situation to fester over thirty years and did nothing about it; worse poured oil on the fire of this socio cultural divide?

Something like this does not, in our day and age, fester out of nothing in organised society!

I remember these conservative shills, that tolerated with complacent arms folded, the fundamental weirdos from PAki lands, while the Brits fought Soviet Union/Allende leftists and supported moslem radicals againt Soviets in Afghan; ignoring superbly the Frankenstein the CIA had created in IRan (with Shah/Savak all on US aid) as in PAk/Afghan subsequently, that became known as Taliban.

What you sow so complacently you then reap; as the fucked up Romans who welcomed the barbarians as mercenaries to defend the empire. Now the barbarians have sons who are delved in contrarian, barbarian mumbo jumbo.

ANd they have a wanker like Cameron trying to sell arms to India, a Boris of London playing whore to the Russian Oligarchs and City shills who want anybody with money to come live in London; (we love your money!), while the UK sinks in debt and QE...what sort of civilization is that?

Not that different from the US, truth be told.

Official numbers for my county report a 5.7% unemployment rate, but boots on the ground tell a different story.

A couple of months ago, a young cousin of mine died after giving birth.  When I went to the funeral, hundreds of her friends and peers were there- I'm a bit older, so I had never met most of them, but I spent a lot of time listening that day.  Out of the two or three dozen people I spoke to, and the countless more I overheard, I literally only heard one person state that they had a job- the rest talked about thier medical conditions, and their experiences with the Department of Health and Human Services.

Being a skeptical kind of guy, I gently prodded a number of them into admitting that they could only get by by collecting SSI Disability checks.  That used to be a shameful secret, but now the younger crowd are actively going after lifelong state support.  Only one kid even asked what I did for a living (the rest apparently assumed I was a post-modern hobo like everyone else they knew,) and when I told him I was an engineer, he acted like he had discovered a unicorn.

The moral of the story is something I believe we already know- the "disabled" are not classified as "unemployed."  There haven't been any new jobs here for quite some time- but disability, well, that's a growth industry.

"Crowded hellhole"?  Well, it worked before, when the Brits lived quite well off the cheap labor and resources from their colonies!  What went wrong?  They can't live off their own cheap labor and resources?  ;-)  You see my friend, a nice living standard is ALWAYS predicated on leveraging cheap and plentiful labor, resources and money.  Especially when it's other people's labor, resources and money being leveraged.  It's true for individuals, companies and empires.  Even the British and American empires, come to find out.

Even a slightly vain starship captain must leverage the crew and the Federation that designed and built the starship, to be accomplished and look good to galactic leaders and even god-like its interstellar damsels.  And these damsels also want to 'leverage' up by having an offspring with a god-like starship captain.  Come to think of it, I do believe that there was one who thought I was "God" when I beamed down, and then told her family and her offspring that he was my Son.  I visited them every now and then, and he eventually started a new religion which was based on being nice to each other and on becoming his followers, so that they might join him on my starship.  Oh, the burdens of a starship captain, and going where no 'man' has gone before.  ;-)

They now realize that there is really little if any difference. As my one Bulgarian buddy explained, "My parents came from the Soviet domination and they told me all the  stories about the rising prices, the do nothing corrupt politicians and the complete incompetence of the centrally planned bureaucracy. They said they crushed any incentive to better your life. They punished hard work and rewarded laziness, pushing the demoralized people into the shackles of the state. I do not see any difference here in Britian then I have heard from my parents."

I told Demeter, "Look buddy. It aint that much different here in America than it is over there. He replied, "No shit Mike. Why the hell do you think I left America to come here!!!!"

Lots of Poles (and Ukranians and Russians) coming to Baltimore and even driving out some of the more troublesome denizens.  I think of it as a good thing.  Slavic peoples move in, businesses get started, the streets get cleaned up, buildings get repaired and crime goes down.  Seems like a good thing to me.

I do not know the benefits game but I am sure there is a very sweet spot of making enough but not too much money. Plus you are going to be sitting around in a cofee shop anyway might as well get paid to be there.

and thank you for the accompanying visuals.

Surely they could have done better?

I don't know...the voiceover really creeped me out. Overtly making a business model out of showing off your assets while preparing Joe? Kind of sick. What next? Elementary School pancake breakfasts with former Hooters wenchs serving in their former body masticating "uniforms". Ugh. There is burn out ya know? After a while it losses something (entirely).

But I will confess this: I love to IGNORE women who are obviously trying to use their charms to gain a step up in the power equation. Its a beautiful thing to see how confused they look (out of the corner of my eye). At some point they'll be embarrassed enough to stop being so obvious.

As published in today's news here...

A large Supermarket Chain (I do not know which BTW), posted openings for TWENTY (20) positions... at hte minimum wage of course, aka less than €576 (and that is including social security, tax adance, etc., the real sum they will end up with is close to 450) ...

They received ONE HUNDRED and SIX THOUSAND (106,000) Applications !!!!

Our math is better than your math! That is a 0.01887% acceptance rate!!!! Not kidding either!!!
