It Is Twenty Times Easier To Get Into Princeton Than To Get A UK Part-Time Coffee Barista Job
As the Brits await anxiously for tomorrow's employment data - with their currency plunging courtesy of reality and Carney's vocal intervention - it appears the job market in blighty is truly dismal. We know it is tough to get into Harvard (5.9% acceptance rate); we recently discussed the difficulty of attaining a flight attendant position at Delta (1.4% acceptance rate - 300 positions for 22,000 applicants); but that's nothing compared to the difficulty in attaining a role at the UK's Costa Coffee. 1700 people applied for 8 positions (0.47% acceptance rate) at a high street coffee house in Mapperley, Nottingham. Just three of the jobs were full-time - and paid between $8 and $15 per hour. Just as in the US, The Daily Mail notes unemployment is actually falling according to official figures, but the demand for relatively low paying jobs tells a different story, as unsuccessful candidates include senior managers with over 15 years experience in retail. The jobs were only listed on the firm's website and on a local building - and attracted this kind of attention leaving the company "amazed at the level of interest."

If you aren't wealthy enough to absorb the incredibly high cost of living in London, which actually has some of the best hotels, museums, cultural institutions, restaurants (contrary to widespread perception), and other amenities in the world, you're paying through the nose in terms of cost of living and taxation to live in nearly any other part of England, which by and large, are just dreadfully depressing (I'm not speaking of Scotland, Wales or Ireland).
To add insult to injury, they have a redonkulous monarchy that 50% of the population gets erections or swollen nipples over, due to some form of sick perversion (where these people apparently take great pride & satisfaction in supporting a do-nothing, sell-out, ultimate, literal welfare Queen and her little princes and princesses).
I have no antipathy towards the British People, necessarily, but find it fascinating as to how passive the majority of them are in receiving lifelong anal rapings.

A couple of months ago, a young cousin of mine died after giving birth. When I went to the funeral, hundreds of her friends and peers were there- I'm a bit older, so I had never met most of them, but I spent a lot of time listening that day. Out of the two or three dozen people I spoke to, and the countless more I overheard, I literally only heard one person state that they had a job- the rest talked about thier medical conditions, and their experiences with the Department of Health and Human Services.
Being a skeptical kind of guy, I gently prodded a number of them into admitting that they could only get by by collecting SSI Disability checks. That used to be a shameful secret, but now the younger crowd are actively going after lifelong state support. Only one kid even asked what I did for a living (the rest apparently assumed I was a post-modern hobo like everyone else they knew,) and when I told him I was an engineer, he acted like he had discovered a unicorn.
The moral of the story is something I believe we already know- the "disabled" are not classified as "unemployed." There haven't been any new jobs here for quite some time- but disability, well, that's a growth industry.
