China Launches New Stealth Frigate
China has been busy reverse engineering military equipment again, this time of the maritime variety, as it launches its first stealth frigate. Supposedly this will make incidents such as this month's "radar lock" tension over the Senkaku islands a thing of the past, as by the time Chinese boats want to be seen, they will be visible with the naked eye. The only question is whose secret plans were hacked in the procurement of the design plans. From BBC: "China's navy has taken delivery of the first of a new kind of stealth frigate, as tension continues with neighbouring countries over maritime borders. The Type 056 stealth frigate has a sleek design that helps it evade radar detection, and needs just one-third of the crew used by its predecessor." Needless to say, the timing of the launch is "just right", and will serve to underscore China's position on the disputed gas field next to several barren islands in the East China Sea.
More from CBS:
The People's Liberation Army Navy is building a total of 20 Type 056 Jiangdao class frigates to replace older models and bolster its ability to conduct patrols and escort ships and submarines in waters it claims in the South China and East China seas.
The first in the class, No. 582, was formally delivered to the navy on Monday in Shanghai, which is home to one of the country's largest complexes of naval shipyards, according to the official Xinhua News Agency and the navy's official website.
Newly promoted navy commander Wu Shengli attended the delivery ceremony, the reports said, an indication of the importance with which the service regards the new ships' mission.
The helicopter-equipped ships feature a sleek design to reduce clutter and make them harder to spot by radar and are armed with anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles. They also need a crew of just 60, two-thirds fewer than older vessels, a major advantage that should boost efficiency and relieve burdens in training and recruitment. At 1,440 tons fully loaded, is considerably smaller than U.S. Navy frigates, and is categorized by some observers as a member of the smaller class of ship known as corvettes.
China's navy has so far stayed aloof from the island disputes in order to avoid further escalating tensions, with patrol ships from the Ministry of Transportation and other government agencies dispatched instead to assert China's territorial claims.
However, China has made no secret of its desire to extend its navy's global reach, and the service has received considerable attention in China's military modernization. China's first aircraft carrier, the overhauled Soviet-era Liaoning, entered service last year, while a growing array of nuclear submarines and ultra-modern surface ships are also joining the fleet.

Or taking a rotting Ukrainian. so-last-century aircraft carrier out of mothballs, dragging it from the Black Sea to China and then telling the world about it.
There's something here I am not understanding very well.
:/
Scrap steel needed?
Harder to spot. Right. (Wink-wink)
The thing about using someone else's military technology is they have the countermeasures. This is exactly the wisdom behind selling all our military stuff to nearly everyone in the world. We have the advantage because we built it and we know how to defeat it. Fast-forward to 21st century when China takes our military technology off the shelf. We still have the kill switch.
I noticed they haven't reverse engineered our Osprey in spite of myself faxing them an entire set of design & construction plans with flight software and material cut list
$10 says Obama DOES NOT cut the Osprey
Google it. There is a China pic of an "Osprey like" model in a wind Tunnel.
As for the above article it is pretty lame. If you followed world military affairs you would know that most modern warships have had this "stealth type" facade for over a decade. Nothing new here. What is new from the PLAN is the Type 052D destroyer... an Aegis type analog.
As for the Ukrainian carrier this is basically a training ship for the PLAN. The cost of making a carrier battlegroup is huge. Thats why only the USA has the only decent CBGs in the world. If they tried to build a Nimitz style carrier right now they would hit so many unforseen problems that it is cheaper to use the ex-Varayag to create their carrier ops procedures. Besides they don't have a mature carrier fighter (J15) and they do not have a fixed wing AEW aircraft (yes they are developing one). All this take time and a lot of money.
IMO they should be spending a lot more on their SSN program.
Future is unmanned drones - ships and aircraft - China is out of date from day one...sorry Charile.
Sorry Gimp.
China is one of the biggest "developers" of UAVs. They have their own "village Hawk" for example.
Again keep up with military affairs will you.
China's military is a "beard" for the US military industrial complex, they show off a new piece of hardware (1 piece) whenever US cuts are considered, its kabuki orchestrated by Lockheed.
It would be nice if China extended their military, there's a big piracy problem globally and its time somebody other than the US ate some of the costs, but Chinese industry isnt' interested in that, (carriers are expensive) they have the US military which protects and delivers China its foreign oil supply for free, and the US trade surplus pays part of their fuel bill.
Since China probably makes most of the electrical components in global radar systems, they should know.
In the meanwhile the Japanese have not been sitting still. They put a stealth coat on the islands and developed a coordination deception system which directs the Chinese navy to Pearl Harbour.
You forgot they also sent the Chinese sailors coupons for free Asahai beer once they get to Honolulu.
They considered free coupons for Budweiser but decided that that would not do the trick.
Big fucking deal - this really more like a Corvette at 1900 tons, our Frogates are more then twice the size. Andhave Aegis radar/missle CCC systems. Including our Frigates, Destroyers, and Cruisers we have over a hundred!
I'm alot more worreid about China's Cyber warfare!!!
I have a stealth rowboat.
wow a stealth boat ... have these guys ever heard of submarines ?
MDB must be one of the person's Bezmenov is talking about.
These ships are offensive, not defensive but China wont attack the usa if it believes the usa will implode financially and is incapable of countering them on the high seas. The Chinese will only attack militarily those who have something it wants and only if victory is certain. right now, the attacking the usa victory would not be certain. They are simply building up their forces. China will start with the little ones first, phillipines, for example. Then move on to the tougher nuts to crack, like vietnam. Taiwan they want intact, they will wait it out. Japan they will save for last. After they have finished with Australia.
It is a pitty the Chinese dont invest their money in schools, jobs, clean air and water for the people instead of repeating in 20 years all the mistakes the usa made in 200. The rest of the world can only hope the chinese economy crashes and they are incapable of financing war before they start their war.
What Russia will do, that's the other piece of the puzzle that must be factored into any equation about China.
