Detroit To Be Taken Over By The State

Tyler Durden's picture

Usually, when the administration needs a distraction from just how broke and insolvent in reality the country is, it sends the stock market soaring higher. As such it is beyond ironic that as the S&P is set to hit an all time high, Detroit - that shining symbol of the Obama administration's bailout of General Motors - effectively goes broke.

Detroit  Mayor Dave Bing says Governor Rick Snyder will announce a state takeover  on Friday

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says Michigan Governor Rick Snyder will announce a state takeover of the city of Detroit on Friday.

Bing says the governor told him his decision during a phone conversation this morning. Bing was talking with reporters following a speech before the Detroit Regional Chamber at the MotorCity Casino.

The city will have 10 days to appeal the decision to the governor.

7 Action News has teams working the story to get more details.

If only Detroit had gone all in the stock market when Bernanke made it his life's crusade to take the Dow to 36,000 and blow up everyone else, trying...

Its taking the Feds forever to get the armed drones in the sky and the FEMA camps operational for the takeover of the United States of America. Maybe the market will hit 2,000 by the time they get their asses in gear.

There was a ZH poster who a week or so ago said the states would take over the bankrupt cities, which would then bankrupt the states.  Then, he wrote, the bankrupt states would be taken over by the feds.

Posted it to my facebook that day just to piss off the muppets I know.

Then today I read this headline - sha-ZAM!

I now realize many ZH'ers are modern-day prophets.

SO glad I found this site!!

The nation's mismanagement is not an occasion for humor or posturing. It is a serious development. Maxine Waters has overdone it; it is more than a false statement! With people like this in central control from Washington, DC, we as a nation are folding.

Don’t Overdo It

"As RESTRICTIONS and prohibition are multiplied in the Empire, the people grow poorer and poorer.

When the people are subjected to overmuch government, the land is thrown into confusion.

When the people are skilled in many cunning arts, strange are the objects of luxury that appear.

The greater the number of laws and enactments, the more thieves and robbers there will be.

Therefore, the Sage says: 'So long as I do nothing, the people will work out their own reformation. So long as I love calm, the people will right themselves. If only I keep from meddling, the people will grow rich. If only I am free from desire, the people will come naturally back to simplicity.'

If the Government is sluggish and tolerant, the people will be honest and free from guile. If the Government is prying and meddling, there will be constant infraction of the law.

Is the Government corrupt? Then uprightness becomes rare, and goodness becomes strange.

Verily, mankind have been under delusion for many a day! Govern a great nation as you would cook a small fish. (Don’t overdo it.)"

I sent this to Tyler but I'm sure he/they get thousands of links and articles.

"Whether it's the Department of Education's failure to produce kids who can read, the FBI's accusations against innocent people in high-profile cases, or the FDA cracking down on tomatoes, the answer is always the same: proponents of bigger government argue that yes, mistakes were made, but the solution of course is to shovel more taxpayer money into the agencies in question.

In the private sector, when a firm fails, it ceases operations. The opposite happens in government."

I'm getting to the point where I'm wondering if people actually want to be free. We're surrounded by pansies, flim flam artists and sheep.

“Yet it gets worse. As the Wall Street Journal and others dig into the story, they find that Madoff's family had close ties to the SEC. His sons, brother, and niece, for example, worked with or advised financial regulators on certain matters—no doubt telling them the best way to protect investors from fraud.”

America’s come to be controlled by just one big happy crime family, nmewn. Those in power have been allowed to murder the market because Congress no longer cares for the country or its future. Congress has joined up with the renegades, subverting anything for their own profit; they'll even twist the laws for powerful men just to ride in a limo.  Well, if the economy doesn’t soon get them the people will. With an American buying a gun every 1.5 seconds, it looks as if we’re heading for a range war.

As someone said, "one need not be shrewd to outwit a pack of fools." My sixth sense tells me we're at the climax - at the explosion point.

If our freedom is to survive, Americans must become far better informed of the dangers from Washington -- regardless of who wins the Presidency." -- James Bovard in Voting is Overrated

The powerful voices on ZH -- you -- are helping turn the tide, nmewn. Public opinion, IMO, now questions the legitimacy of this government. And as James E. Miller of Mises/Canada said, "They fear losing consent above all things because soon after, their lordship must come to an end."

By the looks of things, it may soon be ending.

I have a developer buddy living North of Detroit. A few years back he and some friends put together a beautiful plan to rehab the old Detroit Rowing Club on Belle Isle. Amazing building and location. A member of Congress was even involved.

The Mayor at the time, Kirkpatrick, wanted a cool one million dollar payoff to approve the project.

The plans were dropped right there and that was that.

First of all it is Michiganders.  I lived in Detroit for a couple years in the mid 80s.  Gunshots in the night far too common and an unfortunate with an attempted mugging while picking up and employee on 7 Mile road at 5AM.  We should war with Canada, lose and give them Wayne County.  Then again I have relatives in Canada and they would just give it back anyway.  West side of the state and the north is a whole different world.  In the 50s and 60s before 68 Detroit was the height of American manufacturing.  Sad but true.  Demise on Steroids.

When the City gets to the point when cash flow can't cover the bills, and nobody will buy its bonds, there are provisions in the Federal Bankruptcy code for local governmental units to declare bankruptcy.  The process is very much more like a Chapter 11 than a Chapter 7.  A lifetime tenure Federal Bankruptcy Judge becomes the person who ultimately decides any disagreements over who gets the gold and who gets the shaft.   The City eventually gets its budget straightened out and comes out of bankruptcy.

Politicians cannot allow that sort of power to pass into the hands of somebody else, so they pass laws at the State level that basically say to the locals that if you can't run your city finances, you step aside and let our guy serve as dictator, and he will have absolute power to get all of the financial ducks in a row.  That way, there can be all sorts of back room deals which benefit the state politicians and their cronies.  Much better for them than letting some crusty old bankruptcy Judge rule the roost.  There's a chance that the Judge might not be corruptable.

In the case of Detroit, this is an especially satisfying process, since the State is presently being run by Repubs, and the City has been about 99.8 Dems for decades.  The Repubs probably feel it is about time they got the chance to get their middleman cut while they shove their cocks up the asses of their lifelong worst political foes.

There's probably going to be another riot, except that it requires much more effort now compared to 1967 to find something left to burn down within the City limits.

Contrary to what has been said or implied by many of the above posters, this process in no way makes the State of Michigan financially responsible for any contracts or debts of the City of Detroit.  It just means that the State gets to put their man in as absolute ruler of the City as an alternative to federal bankruptcy.

This is a terrible move from a political standpoint.  The State and voters and taxpayers of Michigan should've let the whole thing fail.  Detroit should collect taxes just like any other city in America....except it has so few people to collect from it can't.  Since it can't the state of Michigan should've cut off ANY and ALL support.  The unions, jackals, thugs, thieves, corrupt politicians, bureaucrats and police could've all eaten the shit they've been dropping for decades.  If the Federal Government wanted to step in to "help" then let people across the nation behold their fate should they choose Detroit's path.  Let them behold and let them wonder and let them prevent it.

Things could've been different.

Welcome to the new USA.

Due to the generational education which has stressed self interest being good for all, americans have largely forgotten/lost the skills of being a member of community where collaboration, the golden rule and long term thinking were predominant.

Now, it is a nation of predators where the most criminal, the most lying, cheating, theiving wins!@! AND the losers are envious and  wish they had been the best predator.

All this arguing over healthcare, SS, Medicaid etc is really about what kind of nation we are.

Detroit citizens could try and figure it out finding better ways to collaborate and cooperate to make a future for the city.  It is possible that hard times will yield a new vision for them.

America was the greatest place in the world until a bunch of cocksuckers wrecked the car and pissed on the door handles.....We coalesce here to discuss, plan and ready ourselves for the retaking. If everything is so great here, then why is the sentiment of the country at its lowest point in recent if not all of history?

detroit should be turned into an open air prison for violent offenders ringed with high voltage fences, drone patrolled and cctved from the air and ground. food, ammunition and weapons drops should be made in random locations around the city daily. no toilet paper. running water should be supplied to certain locations. making sure there are only enough supplies for half the current population, new inmates should be dropped with the supplies every day to maintain the same level of population. the only rule is that anyone who shoots out a cctv camera will be captured and waterboarded while his body is tied to a rack eventualy tearing his body apart.

all of this should be made available world wide for pay for view on the tv and internet payable to .gov, split between the state and feds. michigan would recover in a month and the entire fed deficit would be paid off in a year. all these evil people could go to heaven knowing they gave their lives for the good of mankind so they have received redemption in the eyes of the lord.

They make nice golfcarts.  Now if you wanted a car with an actual engine and US-sized body, General Motors and Chrysler would have that covered.

Detroit has been repossessed, darn, towing it to the wrecking yard might be wiser.

Except that Windsor has a Canadian politician controlling it, not some multistate(or in Canada's case, multiprovince) entity that acts as if it was its own country.

Autos are so 20th century. Detroit needs to find a new industry. Something like manufacturing cyborg replacements for police officers.

The problem is that Snyder(and his men) would end up on the wrong end of an ED-209.  Michigan would lose a very valuable puppet in the quest to make Delta City safe for the businessfolk.

Nothing a couple of Bull Dozers cannot fix. So going long CAT. Should help in the clean up and then by John Deere as we move it back to farmland. That way Detroit can be good for something.
