One Drone Missing; Reward Offered. Please Contact FBI

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday we noted the somewhat startling confession of @NYCAviation investigating a four-engined small aircraft (or drone) at JFK. Today we get the confirmation as the FBI "seeks public assistance in identifying, locating, unmanned aircraft and operator."

Perhaps this?

Via FBI,

On Monday, March, 4, 2013, at approximately 1:15 p.m., the pilot of Alitalia Flight #608 spotted a small, unmanned aircraft while on approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport. The Alitalia flight was roughly three miles from runway 31R when the incident occurred at an altitude of approximately 1,750 feet. The unmanned aircraft came within 200 feet of the Alitalia plane.

The FBI is investigating the incident and looking to identify and locate the aircraft and its operator. The unnamed aircraft was described as black in color and no more than three feet wide with four propellers.

“The FBI is asking anyone with information about the unmanned aircraft or the operator to contact us,” said Special Agent in Charge John Giacalone. “Our paramount concern is the safety of aircraft passengers and crew.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 212-384-1000. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

After all, what's more important, drone practice or airline passenger safety?

Ive gotta say, these drones are just freakin' amazing. I was flying one of these babys at the beach the other day and some of the shots I got of the sunbathers are just sweet. You can literally see everything and everyone. It's like a birds eye view. Everything's more out in the open with these things flying around. I think it's  better that way.

Boston University police arrested a 37-year-old man on the third floor of Mugar Memorial Library Monday night after he was seen taking pictures of female students. Scott Paré, deputy director of public safety and BU Police Department deputy chief, says Michael Lydon, 37, of Brighton, was taken into custody after police received a call from two students. You don't need a PopSci article about it - see http://ardrone2.parrot.com/usa/.  I own and fly several drones of various makes.  There is no way in fuck the AR parrot is going to fly at 1750 feet.  I've seen one demo where a truck full of Lucent-Alcatel wireless boosters and a big 30 foot boom antenna got you to 1,000 feet, barely, but it's not going past 300 feet away under iPhone control.

...outside of visual line-of-sight range?

Dust, water vapour and pollution in the air will rarely let you see more than 20 kilometres (12 miles), even on a clear day. Often, the curvature of the Earth gets in the way first – eg at sea level, the horizon is only 4.8 kilometres (2.9 miles) away. On the top of Mt Everest, you could theoretically see for 339 kilometres (211 miles), but in practice cloud gets in the way. For a truly unobstructed view though, look up. On a clear night, you can see the Andromeda galaxy with the naked eye, which is 2.25 million light years away.

AR drone owner and ham operator here. Nope. You could upgrade the ground antennas/transmit power easy enough, but the onboard power supply the drone has isn't nearly enough to get you to 1700' with any flight time.

My guess would be that it's probably a very high end quadrocopter with a large LiPo pack and high-end radios, or a custom build. It's far more likely that this is a local agency's toy or it's someone doing news gathering or air surveys. This would be a likely candidate: http://www.draganfly.com/uav-helicopter/draganflyer-x4/

The price tag on that is > $10K, so it's unlikely to be someone just screwing around with a toy.

If you have a high enough bandwidth on your modem, a small resolution webcam on your drone allows you to have effectively zero distance from pilot to drone.

Within 200 feet, oh my!

Iimagine if they had collided and the little RC plane got decimated while some paint got scratched on the airliner?  Even getting ingested into a turbofan would have only caused a hot section inspection (finding nothing) of said engine while all that plastic and foam gets chopped, melted, and spat out the back.

Sheesh, nanny state needs to step down!

Then again, I wonder how much C4 one of those things could carry...?

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 14:52 | 3301536 hairball48

Even a lil drone like the one in question could carry more than enough C4 to bring down anything flying into JFK

The 8 grand commercial versions can carry payloads as large as 60 lbs.  The drone pictured above is made of polystyrene/styrofoam.   A jet would suck one of those up as easily as it would a June bug.

Of course someone who rigged the thing up with C4 and a detonator would probably be smart enough to cut the lead powering the blinking LED lights, too.

The hobby drone pictured could probably do some damage to an engine, just like a duck or couple of pigeons can do.  Not likely a threat to anyone's health, but a costly repair.

Anyway, I think the FBI's query should start in Langley.

It was the Tahitians.  French Polynesia is pissed about closing Club Med and is intent on fucking up NY.  Or maybe it was the Ayatollah playing with his new gift from Assad.  Maybe it was the tooth fairy.

Does it bother anyone that the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines,  FBI, DHS, CIA and all the rest of the agencies don't know how a drone is flying over the airport in NYC without their knowledge?

Maybe it belongs to Bob Woodward?

Getting something like that into the country might be a little dicey.

But you can buy a quad-copter kit off eBay. And if the cops pull you over on the way to JFK you tell them it's a gift for your nephew.

DIY drones will become a cottage industry over the next few years. Obama (through the FAA) will move to have them banned outright.

Took them a decade to find OBL in plain sight. Wonder how long it will take them to find this drone?

Of course will probably need another $500B and to listen in on an extra 100 million phone calls (w/o a warrant) but god bless american exceptionalism, they will find that drone.

Sorry misplaced this comment- should haveput it in reply to this:

Probably not - the trouble with the AR Drone Parrot (with indoor hull as shown) is that the range of the WiFi is about 300 feet / 100 Meters.  You simply can't fly that thing at 1750 feet....

Tue, 03/05/2013 - 15:31 | 3301736 css1971
css1971's picture

You don't have to have any contact with the drone at all. You give it waypoints and it flies them. Independently. That's the point. The difference between military and civilian drones (beyond payload) is the sophistication of the autopilot. The civilian autopilots are pretty basic but are certainly capable of flying to preset locations.

I'm kind of expecting a resurgence in interest in satelite phones (Iridium) as a command channel, based on civilian drone use, the data rates are not good but more than enough to act as command and control. 3G as you say can be used for interactive control as well as bulk data; sound, video, other sensors.
