1,200 Dead Pigs Found In Shanghai River

Tyler Durden's picture

Over the past month the west had its "horsemeat" scare, where horse DNA traces have been found in pretty much everything. It is now China's turn to reciprocate, with 1,200 pigs found in Shanghai's Huangpu River. Why someone would dump thousands of dead pigs in the river? Who knows - we are confident that it is bullish, however, and it is time fro GETCO or K-Hen to do something about this strange reddish color in the futures. It is not helping with confidence in central planning...

From China.org

The municipal authorities said the retrieved pigs would be collected and handled in a harmless way.

According to the labels pinned in the ears of the pigs which are used to trace their information, the dead pigs are found to come from the upstream waters of the Huangpu River.

The local authorities are conducting coordinated efforts to stop the dumping of dead pigs from the source.

Local media reports said the pigs mainly came from Shanghai's neighboring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

The water quality of Shanghai has not been affected by the floating dead pigs, according to the city's water supply bureau.

But fear not: just like Fukushima (which has its 2 year anniversary today) was reported by the government for days and days to be just a minor blip and only conspiracy theorists were allowed to associate dangerous radioactivity with a nuclear power plant explosion, so pigs in a river are, according to China, perfectly normal:

"The data of water quality are all within the normal range," said the bureau.

One wonders how many pigs in the river would shift the water quality to "abnormal"...

The water quality is not affected, until it is. So until that time, all is fine as long as you don't have enough money to go elsewhere.

You should go to Africa, or Iraq/Kuwait.  Same shit, it's unbeievable how much garbage they just dump wherever.  Kuwait is a rocky/sandy landscape with white plastic bottles blowing like Tumbleweeds.  Naturally they all end up in what few irrigation ditches they have.  Iraq the same way but they have a variety of items, kids there play in streets where open pit sewers run down the middle of the road...with no shoes on.  Oh and of course there's broken whisky bottles and herion needles on the ground everywhere too.  So much for no drug use in a quasi-sharia-law country.  Africa, well I dont' think I need to describe that, but even the "good" areas of Nairobi were filthy, and the landscape bordering any city, town or village was full of garbage, people lived among it.  No wonder so many die from Cholera, Dysentary or other totally preventable diseases, that and just sheer overpopulation considering what the land can support.

They do the same thing in Mauritania.  The goats and the cows graze on the garbage piles around the city because there is nothing else to eat. (NW Sahra Desert).... And then the people eat the goats and the cows.  Ocasinally you will see goats living on the roof tops of houses.  I think this is done to control what they eat by some of the more discerning Mauritanians.  This is definetly one place you do not want to eat the free-range meat.

I think the pigs were just so disgusted by the condition of the Chinese roadsides (nightsoil blobbing-up and depositionalizing and all that) that they tried in desperation to find a cleaner environment by swimming in the rivers instead.

Alas, alas, several more times alas, the joke was on them.

It can't burst until you fill it wit occupants. They have a 10 year stock of housing for all the growth expected over the next decade. If they were to wait until the growth occured, the housing would cost more. Now they sit abandoned waiting for farmers to migrate from the hills to the once beautiful coastal cities who's richer residents are fleeing and will need to be replaced.

I told the kids in one of my classes (I'm about 6 years older than the average undergraduate) not to copy off me like I'm a Korean Kid in Math class or they won't do well.  I took the first 20 questions and shifted the answer one space to the right. If it was D I looped back to A.  They all copied, I could see the eyeballs.

So at the end, when I was finished I simply erased the first 20 and shifted the answers, knowing that NOW they'd be right. I wonder if that confused them or if they didn't notice too much and thought maybe I was checking. Either way I hid my scantron well at this point (and after the first 20 I let them all see).  Well grades are posted online, I got a 98% and the class average was a 73%.  Hopefully I contributed to that low average, my own grade being what it was there certainly had to be some drag elsewhere.  We'll see if anyone got the first 20 in a row wrong come Tuesday.  Mwahahaha, Muhfuggarz, I told them not to.

For the first time the researchers have been able to mutate the H5N1 strain of avian influenza so that it can be transmitted easily through the air in coughs and sneezes. Until now, it was thought that H5N1 bird flu could only be transmitted between humans via very close physical contact.

Dutch scientists carried out the controversial research to discover how easy it was to genetically mutate H5N1 into a highly infectious "airborne" strain of human flu. They believe that the knowledge gained will be vital for the development of new vaccines and drugs.

"BEIJING -- Thousands of dead pigs, a number of them diseased, were found in Shanghai's major drinking water supply in the last two days, officials said."

"...Some of the pigs were infected with porcine circovirus (PCV) virus, according to an official statement by the Shanghai Agriculture Committee. The statement posted on China's Twitter-like social media service Weibo said that the disease would not infect humans. "

I spent 10 weeks in china in 2009.  I was generally amazed at the country.  I don't get upset about overpopulation because we did it to ourselves with global vaccination programs, feed the poor, and chest thumping evangelicals.   Chinese rivers are disgusting.  I was in Chengdu and walked over a brdge in the early evening.  The small was awful.

Just help me with the logic of throwing the dead piggies in the river.  I can't seem to understand how the farmer(s) thought they could solve their problem by shipping it downstream such that nobody would notice the 3,000 dead pigs and communist hatchet men would not be arriving at their doorstep to drag them someplace where they will eventually be shot in the back of the head for doing this?  The ChiComs don't fuck around, they execute people for jaywalking.  Although I guess they just turn a blind eye to all the other pollution in that river.

This is what bothers me about this whole story.this is a lot of protein to waste for such an overpopulated country. There must be something more to this story. Hell, the Chinese poisoned their own population with melamine, why not feed them some diseased pig? I remember the heparin contamination issue when 80 people died. This was obviously done on purpose because heparin can only be made from pig intestines. There was a shortage of pigs so their solution was to adulterate the product and hope to sneak it through. Now there are 1200 pigs in a river? Makes no sense to me.

Sigh, as often the fate is to those who fight the state. I pray you, I and many here do not meet such an end. Those who don't study history are condemned to repeat it. Today it's not about lack of study rather than a willful determined ignorance that seems so pervasive in our country today. I shudder at the pig slaughtering that may come.

Yes. This is my summation of our world today. It can even be seen here in a forum that is supposed to foster dialog and debate. I guess this is what saddens me so much. How do you fight this? If I bring you my " truth" you are to examine it, accept it or reject it. In counter you volley back your reaction to my truth and I reexamine my premise. I then counter you and so on and so on. We either end up in agreement, " push" or hopelessly in disagreement. At least there is some form of interaction. Now there are just dead zombies with no memories of their humanness. I should really reread Alan Blooms book The Closing of the American Mind again. I thought he was radically off base in many ways. I think I would find more commonality now.

I recently reread "Fahrenheit 451" by Rad Bradbury, after having last read it around 30 years ago.  The parallels with modern Western society --- the banal shallowness and greyness of everyday life, the death of reading, the overall social disconnectedness, the passive acceptance of crushing authoritarianism, even the the obsession with vapid television programming on oversized screens --- were positively eerie, especially considering that the book was written over 60 years ago.

Now there's a book I always meant or have read and never got around to picking it up. Thanks for reminding me, I will add it to my kindle. Look how many books foreshadowed things today. Brave New World, Animal Farm, CS Lewis's trilogy:Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength(particularly loved his N.I.C.E. National institute of Coordinated Experiments- the central social planning agency designed to annihilate humanity) HG Wells The Time Machine. How funny science fiction of yore, which I,at the time, just read for pleasure seems so prophetic today! I guess I was too young and couldn't hear or see the message.

Ok akak, I've gotten too much pleasure talking to you and this has got to stop so please pick a topic that will piss me off royally and we can have a blood spattering like this forum has never seen. Or else someone will call me a pussy and that is an indignity I will not suffer! ;-)

I've walked along the Huangpu River in Shanghai; on both the Bund and the Pudong side.  I would believe the local authorities.  Several thousand dead infected pigs would not negatively affect the quality of that river's water.  Might even improve it somewhat.  I bet hundreds of thousands, if not a couple million, Chinese people per year die of environmental pollution in one form or another.  Not like their government cares.  Going back 5000 years, all the Chinese government has concerned itself regarding the people is whether or not they're going to revolt.  In that I'm not singling out the Chinese government, necessarily.  But since this story is about China...
