Postcards From Cyprus
While not the Molotov-cocktail-throwing, smoke-bomb-hurling debacle that Greece (and Spain) became, the Cypriot demonstrations are gathering pace with a large protest planned for this evening and tomorrow during the parliament's vote. The following images give a sense of the feeling among the people...

manna shevitz, the bernack better clear his schedule
Do we have a riot cam feed for Cyprus yet?
Completely apathetic human race. What is there, like 20 people? What a joke.
And that is why this shit will continue. Banker theft is going completely unaddressed by the people. The entire world civilization will be pillaged because no one gives a shit.
Bernocchio knows it too.
Izzat one of them Soylent Green thingies?
your stupid protest signs dont mean shit, take to arms!..... o wait, those were taken from you decades ago... never mind, keep making stupid signs.
Thanks Tyler. I wasn't following Cyprus, so I am hitting the books, if you will. You may all like my recent missive - Island Nightmares - http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/18/island-nightmares/
Fractional Banking => Withdraw all deposits = Bank fucked
Oh noes! Are those home-made signs? I'm sure the Germans are trembling.
Wake me up when they discover sniper rifles.
If that is Krugman posting above (and it likely isn't), you have to wonder what that mathematical chatter box is doing posting here.
All of this shouldn't be happening according to his theories - we've had market intervention, bailouts, deficit spending, etc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8LmE5cfQKA
Au contraire, I have never agreed with how Europe has handled it's economy through this depression.
The depression is a world-wide phenomenon created by a debt-based money system, central planning of interest rates, falsification of consumer goods inflation figures by governments (CPI), blowing of a debt bubble by the regulators (central banks), falsification of gold prices, etc.
In short it is about central planning and intervention in the markets and a fundamentally flawed fiat money system.
I am sure you feel there should have been more intervention by European governments and central banks. And that is the nub of the problem.
FFS it's not the Krugman troll, it's a troll pretending to be the real troll.

ENGLISH home-made signs for the english-reading news.
Don't forget that detail.
At least it's not as suspicious as the English-only protest signs in Pakistan or India... those always get me. How many people flat out don't stop and say "how come that sign's not in Hindi or Urdu?"
Almost everybody in Cyprus speaks some English. Only the elderly in villages don't know how to speak any English.
Why do you waste your time here paul. Everyone junks you and your articals are garbage and only mean something to mindless sheep.
Dont even need to read it. let me guess, cyprus just needs to break some windows and they'll be fine?
kudos to krugman. he stands his ground with his opinions.
he takes it in the face and he's not anonymous.
on ZH, he is the contrarian's contrarian, which is weird
because he's not exactly a conforming classicist either.
I think he IS anonymous. and NOT Krugman.
Just a thought.
always a possibility. but the time zone matches
and the grammar and style seem consistent.
But this bastard can't use "its" correctly. Surely a blowhard like the real Krugman would get that right. Now excuse me while I had to the lavatory to take a Krugman.
no it's not. He used to write differently, he's just changed up a little. The actual Paul Krugman is more likely to post to his twitter @nytimeskrugman than zerohedge.
Probably - but most wardens get tired of hanging-out and chatting at their own looney bin - with all due respect, but the rationale in his writings is/are that bad.
It is extremely damaging to our society to have policy makers and government officials utilizing his ideas.
More 'nudity' is required to make this a newsworthy event... All that Russian mob money & nobody thought of putting a few Ukranian hookers into the frame?
Yes, Dr. Krugman you are right. They are going about this all wrong. They should inflate the peoples' money away so no one notices the theft.
You need to read Thoreau or Durant's Lessons of History while you're at it, and make a real attempt at personal enlighenment.
Cypriots are armed to the teeth for your info, as all cypriots are the army. Just like switzerland.
You beat me to it. If you aren't armed then nobody gives a shit.
You have to look the other way sometimes. How can I ever hope to be wealthy if I don't support the system?
Obviously they are "enemy combatants" and need to be droned.
You are right this riot is a Joke it had maximum 200 people... Yesterday we were having Carnavals in Greece and Cyprus and in Greece they were full of people...Some weeks ago we had some riots and only 2000 people attended them in a country that has 1.500.000+ unemployeed and rising everyday
Only a few seem to realize what will come after this decision in both Countries.
In my opinion this decision is the end of Euro.
I read this site regularly, and a smokin hot article gets 60k maybe 75k hits. I went to youtube the other day (trying to understand a cultural reference) and saw that gangnam style had 1.5 billion hits. The stark contrast made me nauseated, and hateful.
So... what you're saying is that we need a "Goldman is bankster style" parody video, with the banksters ripping off everyone while living large.
Banzai!!
satire injection. STAT!
does Banzai do videos?

Everyone else is on the phone to Vladimir.
BERNOCCHIO ~ That's good stuff right there !!
@nope ... I know, it's ultimately up to us(maybe the 95% of this world) to say enough is enough. Without massive public rejection againt their financial dictatorship we are never going to end this.
Alternatively, if we are all apathetic about publicly manifesting our opinion, we can perhaps do it in a smarter way. I mean the Bitcoin solution. Really, I was skeptic at first, but the more I read about it the more I like it. Think about it, if a considerable amount of people start accepting it as money, it will end their centuries-old money monopoly. Please tell me how this couldn't work?? I mean, unless Bitcoin really is another form of manipulation, it will ultimately be at last money for the people....I have no problem with gold either, but a solution like Bitcoin seems way more practical and democratic.
ultimately the greed of fiat-for-bitcoin exchanges & volatility is its downfall. On this side of the currency universe instead of the bizarro-btc universe, there's people with legal authority to issue yen, dollars, euros, as they please, and on the btc side there's NO distinguishing those from honest dollars because no dollars are honest. Hence btc itself can be raided, controlled, ruined, regulated de facto without a single word uttered about laws or legal tender.
The threat posted by btc will proportionally cause cia and/or fed reserve to buy them first & control what supply is on exchanges.
Should have been less greedy & used them only for a barter network. Too late now.
My only issue with bitcoin is that it is 100% digital. Therefore, every transaction is tracked, taxed, and logged. The idea is great, the implementation forfeits certain personal rights because why does the gov't need to know every transaction you do?
That's what I don't like about it.
odds are the Russian mobsters won't go to public protest to show their misgivings over the accounts. Now if some banker's hair starts falling out and he suddenly gets very sick and stays that way... OK, now we're cooking with gazprom.
Russian Mafia vs, Troika
Sounds fantastic!

yep. nothing will change.
lynch a banker in the bank parking lot, video to you tube.
that's a start.
until then, articles like this show us what's not being done.
Do they have an internet kill switch and indefinite detention in place?
long pitchforks!
Withhold 35% from pay checks and everythings ok. Take 6.5% after they have the money in hand, they take to the street. Just think of the riots if there was no with holding from paychecks an you had to pay taxes after you cashed your check in full.
Somebody gets it. Thank you, 68 Camaro SS.
US legislators are afraid the island might tip over.
That was one idiotic Democrat representative, but I repeat myself.
"Get to work, Mr. Chairman!"
Thank the ****ing retards in Amerika who voted for the muslim. A few even post here on ZH. F you tards!
they'll bend over and take it like the good sheeple they are -
So if they do this, if they confiscate the peoples' savings, then the problem is fixed then, right? Just like the last 5 times they said it was fixed.
Trust, this time it's different.
Yea right. Get back to work cuz next time they'll need 20%. The can ain't getting any lighter.
Nobody cares. Dow will be going green soon. Euro up against the dollar.
DOW hits green by 2pm EST. Kardashians ass is so much bigger then before hits front page by 2:01. crisis off.
Teh Internets let me down the other day, as I was actually in line at the grocery store checkout before I noticed that Kanye had left Kim.

As long as they don't have guns....
Who needs guns with a trusty compact flame thrower?
Not enough pain with guns.
Must. Ban. Guns.
"the" people are not relevant. when will you understand?
My favorite is the plow truck trying to get into the bank.
I REALLY hope they try this here one day. Maybe finally a banker will get shot.
Plow truck has a sign on the back that reads Bergungsdienst
(recovery service) in GERMAN !
FUCK YOU ECB, MERKEL, BERNANKE, AND ALL THE OTHER ROTTING STINKING USELESS PIECES OF SHIT THAT ARE NOTHING BUT THIEVES! YOU'RE ALL NOT HUMAN! YOU FEEL NO SYMPATHY FOR ANYONE! FUCK THE PRESS THAT'S COMPLICIT WITH THIS, THE TECHNOCRATS, THE POLITICALLY CONNECTED, FUCK YOU ALL!
"In progressive societies the concentration (of wealth in the hands of a few) may reach a point where the strength of number in the many poor rivals the strength of ability in the few rich; then the unstable equilibrium generates a critical situation, which history has diversely met by legislation redistributing wealth or by revolution distributing poverty.

The only ones the banksters fear are the Arab masses - because unlike Western Man the Arabs are actually willing to die for a cause bigger than themselves - the Western man used to be such a creature of honor and personal pride - just read the founders - but alas those are days gone by chip chip cheerio --- now its walmart sheeple who may get mad they can't have their big gulp - but since they can't run 10 yards to even get up the steam to throw a molotov cocktail - just resign themselves to the couch and vent on You Tube for slow internet speeds that keeps their world of warcraft experince less than optimal - watch and enjoy -http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=c5d_1362232342
Where is Pussy Riot when you need them?
Riot Dog where are you?!
He's probably given up on the human race. He's thinking about supporting cats instead because at least they don't just let others take away their food.

It will amazaing if they become pro Russia protests, waiving Russian flags welcoming the Russian paratroopers, throwing flowers at the invasion forces , knowing the Russins will protect their deposts.
"Joerg Asmussen, a member of the European Central Bank's governing council, said there would be no objection to Cyprus altering the bailout terms.
He said: "It's the Cyprus government's adjustment programme. If Cyprus' president wants to change something regarding the levy on bank deposits, that's in his hands. He must just make sure that the financing is intact.
"The important thing is that the financial contribution of 5.8bn euros remains.""

Da boss says he dont care how you gets da money, as long as you gets da money, capice?
Standard Machiavellian modus operandi: propose something so outrageous, that the public becomes paralyzed, then quickly offer/slip up that, well, the rates maybe negotiable.
Major parts of the public then start to accept the premise of the whole charade, as they pass thru Kubler-Ross model depression cycle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kübler-Ross_model
What hes saying is that they dont care how they split it as long as they get the 5.8billion. But point taken re: the modus operandi.
But the EU is parting with their own EUR 10bln as well - don't forget that.
They just want to set the precedent for depositor/IRA/401k confiscation.
Well they're parting with 4 and some change if they get the 5.8 off the citizens. Add to to that a fresh batch of austerity/debt slaves and the banks bondholders dont have to take a hit. I would say its a pretty sweet deal really.
the EU ECB is parting with some number of electrons back to the system they just raided. Really? Well, that sure gives me financial confidence.
GOLD, BITCHEZ.
At least the weather looks nice.
The US might have an edge here. If this protest occured in the US (i.e., the pols actually angered the general population - not just the OWS scumbags) there would be guns in that crowd with people behind them who knew how to use them.
Why do you think that Homeland Security bought thousands of tanks and billions of ammunition?
Until next time,
Engineer
Too protekt us aginst terrrrists.
some of those OWS people went to Occupy the Fed.
To protest its very existence at its doors.
Did you do that? How does that make them scumbags? It won't get the job done but it did get attention.
Something, however, doesn't add up: the protester who had the best anti-fed rant was at this video http://youtu.be/rQow0Fhua1A which was public but now... it's not. That I find highly suspect for a protest.
I voted you up even though I very much disagree with your characterization of OWS. But I do agree that armed protesters are handled differently than unarmed.
I like the first picture - the suit with his goons.
Love Cyprus.
Germans will get... special pricing in restaraunts around here from this point onward. :)
Most of them would be banned from playing soccer in Greece for life.
Absolutely true, people are not relevant at all. Please all, watch Downton Abbey. Despite the huge effort to make aristocrachy humane, you can see how they truly think of the rest of us.
The economic system of the world was created between 1600s and the 1700s by them...
Until next time,
Engineer
I've been thinking all weekend and I think I finally figured it out. What is the theme here? Russian hot money Russian hot money....hot money....hot money....illegal....illegal...confiscation...
Maybe a month or two from now you will hear that all that hot money left the banks and bought gold.
So confiscation of gold only makes sense since almost all of it is in the hands of the wrong people.
The few "others" much like the few "other" citizens of Cyprus just have to deal with being collateral damage.
case closed.
Raiding bank deposits is easy - point and click. They are low hanging fruit for those with electronic control over them.
MUCH harder to confiscate/steal Gold and silver held in private vaults. Same with fine art.
Anyway if all this money in Cyprus was being laundered, why the fuck are there not hundreds of money laundering cases being filed against Cypriot banks?.....ok silly question.
The big money probably only rested in Cyprus for a short time before moving on to London, Hong Kong, NY, Geneva etc anyway.
Looks like 20 people?
The whole Cyprus thing is about who gets their hands on their nat gas reserves. The rest is a show for the public. Goldman (sorry delete that) The EU/IMF did what they did on purpose, to completely finish Cyprus and force them to pledge their reserves in a bailout. The Russians must be mad and somehow think that sending their third-world navy will change anything.
Russia should get back at them through the back door: They should kill the US dollar that sustains the Euro zone by producing undeniable evidence that the western central banks have no physical gold left. The Force is Strong with this One
Pretty amazing that you can have confiscation of bank desposits in the EU and investors decide that they would rather own euros now!
What would they do with it if the EU collected a 10% wealth tax on the Rothschild hidden fortune?
Probably think the Fourth Reich aint so bad after all.
"FX Market Opens, EUR Hammered, CHF Bid; S&P To Open -30pts"...how's that working out for you?
ZH had its 20 mins with Morgan Stanley...nice try fabricating another crisis guys
Weekend gaps are getting filled, dipshit.
A broke EU, who has to take from citizen bank accounts, is not a crisis? LOL.... get back to your cubicle and stare at that terminal. When was the last time, in recorded history, that a gov't went into each and every national bank account and took after tax dollars?
for the time being its a broke Cyprus; you are ahead of the timetable!
Eu is not robbing anybody, but as providers of cash, 10B loan asked for, it wants the Cypriots to provide 6B, with preresolution in parliament of course. THe Cypriots then get to lose 3.5% to 7% of their savings instead of 100% WITHOUT EU support. The Ruskis 12.5 to 10% if they haven't moved it out.
Lets get the facts straight, this is a cypriot problem like the greek problem before, and its a sovereign decision about which solution the PEOPLE want; admittedly they have been scammed by their banks and government but that is not Merkel's or EU's fault.
The EU does not access those bank accounts directly, but it is financial ultimatum. Tuff times for everyone including US citizens.
Lets not froth in the face like this guy!
ZERVOS: 'This Is A Nuclear War On Savings And Wealth' - Business Insider
He didn't say that when Paulson Tarped, BEn Q-ed; Dimon whaled away and HSBC/RBS scammed libor; the real banksta cabal.
He is a total shill. He was just singing the day before DJIA to 20000!
Just saying...the US media get very hot under the collar and ra-ra delusional at the same time on WS levitation hopium.
Awesome to see ! Like GOP histrionics on the Hill!
+1000 on that.
still looks red to me
Haha, this looks like a Sandra Fluke political rally.
Imagine the outrage if the 47% actually had to contribute and the Obama phone crowd was required to work sweeping streets, picking up litter, etc.
I've seen more people protesting about the winner of Big Brother!
Don't call it a levy.
Don't call it a tax.
Call it THEFT!
LOL, I love the down vote from the resident Banker/Federal Reserve shill...and I ain't mad at cha. I know you're just doing what they pay you to do.
This is only the beginning - the world's dictators [are you watching and listening Chalky?] are measuring the anger and resentment. Other shoes will surely drop in the future.

It's time to apply the Julian Carlton solution to the Banks.
I'm amazed at the lack of discussion surrounding the fairness of stealing the saver's money but the guy living next door with boats and fancy cars with zero savings has nothing confiscated. The responsible folks are paying the tab for those who saved nothing.
'The responsible folks are paying the tab for those who saved nothing.'
And for cash-based operators who keep their euros stashed in a safe.
Hmmm, maybe banking one's funds isn't so 'responsible' after all ...
Confiscation equals risk on, because Cyprus savers would have been up 1% this morning if they had put their cash in Apple lol.
Hate to dash your hopes people, if you expect any sizeable demonstration in protestation of the extralegal expropriation, 'cause I suspect that on such a sunnily beautiful bank holiday, Nicosia's coffee places will be jam-packed full of insouciant little shiplings; us Cypriots know our priorities.
If however there's time after our 7-hour coffee break, well everything's possible and sky's the limit (untill dinner time of course).
Uh oh. See guy in black t-shirt, shaved head, glasses?
He's only holding up one hand, and it looks just like ... that Greek Soccer player !
Oh no, NAZIs in Cypress!
Run, hide, ban! Ban the Cypriots, they are Nazi troublemakers!
Ban them from their island! Take their money as punishment.
The lesson in all this children, is that you should have everything you own in the STOCK MARKET. Not in the bank. Banks are not safe.
in the market, you have Govt Guaranteed returns ... or your money (which we are printing more of right now) back!
hope that was sarc. all these 'cypriots' look like english trust fund babies and expat nouveaux riches to me.
To me too.
I really thought the Irish would stand up and push back hard to set everything in motion, but it didn't happen. Maybe the Cypriots will be the ones to get it done with this threat of direct theft.
Also, when I say push back hard, I mean blood in the streets. Grab one or two banksters/eurocrats and publically execute them. I read recently (it might of been here on ZH a very profound thought. "If 10 birds are on a wire and you shot one, how many are left? Answer: Zero." I feel this has much truch.
Nope. Looks like from the pictures that approx. 20 people showed up for the "mass protest" - and they likely do not have savings accounts.
Nope. Looks like from the pictures that approx. 20 people showed up for the "mass protest" - and they likely do not have savings accounts.
Okay, here's the deal. Today is ahuge religious holiday and most people are with family and friends. Tomorrow everybody goes back to work and the fiesta mood goes out the window. Trust me, people here are pissed and it's going to get ugly in Nicosia and at the banks. Whenever they decide it's safe to to re-open...
First your bank account, then your IRA/401K, then your brokerage account, then your gold.
I think they will start with gold but only be offered lead....
TRUST US ...to take it all, if we want.
i can save my dormicums and valiums, just have to look at these images
Those function as real money in some places, you know.
These picture made me realize that the EU will get away with everything as planned. Maybe they aren''t as stupid as everyone thinks. Will there even be a bank run in other countries? The reaction of most Europeans, no matter what is done to them, is a colective shrug.

Sorry guys, Cyprus, as the event itself, is a non-event.
Seeing a couple of pictures of a dozen people protesting is nothing.
If there were riots in the streets, I'd pay attention.
The pay-attention factor here is precedent that this actions sets.
Cyprus is a bug that hit the windshield.
