Postcards From Cyprus

Tyler Durden's picture

While not the Molotov-cocktail-throwing, smoke-bomb-hurling debacle that Greece (and Spain) became, the Cypriot demonstrations are gathering pace with a large protest planned for this evening and tomorrow during the parliament's vote. The following images give a sense of the feeling among the people...

Completely apathetic human race.  What is there, like 20 people?  What a joke.

And that is why this shit will continue.  Banker theft is going completely unaddressed by the people.  The entire world civilization will be pillaged because no one gives a shit.

Bernocchio knows it too.

If that is Krugman posting above (and it likely isn't), you have to wonder what that mathematical chatter box is doing posting here.

All of this shouldn't be happening according to his theories - we've had market intervention, bailouts, deficit spending, etc.

Au contraire, I have never agreed with how Europe has handled it's economy through this depression.

Mon, 03/18/2013 - 11:25 | 3342636 Pinto Currency
Pinto Currency's picture

The depression is a world-wide phenomenon created by a debt-based money system, central planning of interest rates, falsification of consumer goods inflation figures by governments (CPI), blowing of a debt bubble by the regulators (central banks), falsification of gold prices, etc.

In short it is about central planning and intervention in the markets and a fundamentally flawed fiat money system.

I am sure you feel there should have been more intervention by European governments and central banks.  And that is the nub of the problem.

ENGLISH home-made signs for the english-reading news.

Don't forget that detail.

At least it's not as suspicious as the English-only protest signs in Pakistan or India... those always get me. How many people flat out don't stop and say "how come that sign's not in Hindi or Urdu?"

Probably - but most wardens get tired of hanging-out and chatting at their own looney bin - with all due respect, but the rationale in his writings is/are that bad.

It is extremely damaging to our society to have policy makers and government officials utilizing his ideas.

You are right this riot is a Joke it had maximum 200 people... Yesterday we were having Carnavals in Greece and Cyprus and in Greece they were full of people...Some weeks ago we had some riots and only 2000 people attended them in a country that has 1.500.000+ unemployeed and rising everyday

Only a few seem to realize what will come after this decision in both Countries.

In my opinion this decision is the end of Euro.

@nope ... I know, it's ultimately up to us(maybe the 95% of this world) to say enough is enough. Without massive public rejection againt their financial dictatorship we are never going to end this.

Alternatively, if we are all apathetic about publicly manifesting our opinion, we can perhaps do it in a smarter way. I mean the Bitcoin solution. Really, I was skeptic at first, but the more I read about it the more I like it. Think about it, if a considerable amount of people start accepting it as money, it will end their centuries-old money monopoly. Please tell me how this couldn't work?? I mean, unless Bitcoin really is another form of manipulation, it will ultimately be at last money for the people....I have no problem with gold either, but a solution like Bitcoin seems way more practical and democratic.

Mon, 03/18/2013 - 11:46 | 3342763 MeelionDollerBogus

ultimately the greed of fiat-for-bitcoin exchanges & volatility is its downfall. On this side of the currency universe instead of the bizarro-btc universe, there's people with legal authority to issue yen, dollars, euros, as they please, and on the btc side there's NO distinguishing those from honest dollars because no dollars are honest. Hence btc itself can be raided, controlled, ruined, regulated de facto without a single word uttered about laws or legal tender.

The threat posted by btc will proportionally cause cia and/or fed reserve to buy them first & control what supply is on exchanges.

Should have been less greedy & used them only for a barter network. Too late now.

My only issue with bitcoin is that it is 100% digital.  Therefore, every transaction is tracked, taxed, and logged.  The idea is great, the implementation forfeits certain personal rights because why does the gov't need to know every transaction you do?

That's what I don't like about it.

"In progressive societies the concentration (of wealth in the hands of a few) may reach a point where the strength of number in the many poor rivals the strength of ability in the few rich; then the unstable equilibrium generates a critical situation, which history has diversely met by legislation redistributing wealth or by revolution distributing poverty.

Standard Machiavellian modus operandi: propose something so outrageous, that the public becomes paralyzed, then quickly offer/slip up that, well, the rates maybe negotiable.

Major parts of the public then start to accept the premise of the whole charade, as they pass thru Kubler-Ross model depression cycle.

To protest its very existence at its doors.

Did you do that? How does that make them scumbags? It won't get the job done but it did get attention.

Something, however, doesn't add up: the protester who had the best anti-fed rant was at this video http://youtu.be/rQow0Fhua1A which was public but now... it's not. That I find highly suspect for a protest.

I've been thinking all weekend and I think I finally figured it out. What is the theme here? Russian hot money Russian hot money....hot money....hot money....illegal....illegal...confiscation...

Maybe a month or two from now you will hear that all that hot money left the banks and bought gold.

So confiscation of gold only makes sense since almost all of it is in the hands of the wrong people.

The few "others" much like the few "other" citizens of Cyprus just have to deal with being collateral damage.

case closed.

Raiding bank deposits is easy - point and click. They are low hanging fruit for those with electronic control over them.

MUCH harder to confiscate/steal Gold and silver held in private vaults. Same with fine art.

Anyway if all this money in Cyprus was being laundered, why the fuck are there not hundreds of money laundering cases being filed against Cypriot banks?.....ok silly question.

The big money probably only rested in Cyprus for a short time before moving on to London, Hong Kong, NY, Geneva etc anyway.

The whole Cyprus thing is about who gets their hands on their nat gas reserves. The rest is a show for the public. Goldman (sorry delete that) The EU/IMF did what they did on purpose, to completely finish Cyprus and force them to pledge their reserves in a bailout. The Russians must be mad and somehow think that sending their third-world navy will change anything.

Russia should get back at them through the back door: They should kill the US dollar that sustains the Euro zone by producing undeniable evidence that the western central banks have no physical gold left.

Pretty amazing that you can have confiscation of bank desposits in the EU and investors decide that they would rather own euros now!

A broke EU, who has to take from citizen bank accounts, is not a crisis?  LOL.... get back to your cubicle and stare at that terminal.  When was the last time, in recorded history, that a gov't went into each and every national bank account and took after tax dollars?

for the time being its a broke Cyprus; you are ahead of the timetable!

Eu is not robbing anybody, but as providers of cash, 10B loan asked for,  it wants the Cypriots to provide 6B, with preresolution in parliament of course. THe Cypriots then get to lose 3.5% to 7% of their savings instead of 100% WITHOUT EU support. The Ruskis 12.5  to 10% if they haven't moved it out.

Lets get the facts straight, this is a cypriot problem like the greek problem before, and its a sovereign decision about which solution the PEOPLE want; admittedly they have been scammed by their banks and government but that is not Merkel's or EU's fault.

The EU does not access those bank accounts directly, but it is financial ultimatum. Tuff times for everyone including US citizens.

Lets not froth in the face like this guy!

ZERVOS: 'This Is A Nuclear War On Savings And Wealth' - Business Insider

He didn't say that when Paulson Tarped, BEn Q-ed; Dimon whaled away and HSBC/RBS scammed libor; the real banksta cabal.

He is a total shill. He was just singing the day before DJIA to 20000!

Just saying...the US media get very hot under the collar and ra-ra delusional at the same time on WS levitation hopium.

Awesome to see ! Like GOP histrionics on the Hill!

I'm amazed at the lack of discussion surrounding the fairness of stealing the saver's money but the guy living next door with boats and fancy cars with zero savings has nothing confiscated. The responsible folks are paying the tab for those who saved nothing.

'The responsible folks are paying the tab for those who saved nothing.'

And for cash-based operators who keep their euros stashed in a safe.

Hmmm, maybe banking one's funds isn't so 'responsible' after all ...

Hate to dash your hopes people, if you expect any sizeable demonstration in protestation of the extralegal expropriation, 'cause I suspect that on such a sunnily beautiful bank holiday, Nicosia's coffee places will be jam-packed full of insouciant little shiplings; us Cypriots know our priorities.

If however there's time after our 7-hour coffee break, well everything's possible and sky's the limit (untill dinner time of course).

Oh no, NAZIs in Cypress!

Run, hide, ban! Ban the Cypriots, they are Nazi troublemakers!

Ban them from their island! Take their money as punishment.

The lesson in all this children, is that you should have everything you own in the STOCK MARKET. Not in the bank. Banks are not safe.

in the market, you have Govt Guaranteed returns ... or your money (which we are printing more of right now) back!

I really thought the Irish would stand up and push back hard to set everything in motion, but it didn't happen.  Maybe the Cypriots will be the ones to get it done with this threat of direct theft.

Also, when I say push back hard, I mean blood in the streets.  Grab one or two banksters/eurocrats and publically execute them.  I read recently (it might of been here on ZH a very profound thought.  "If 10 birds are on a wire and you shot one, how many are left?   Answer: Zero."  I feel this has much truch.

Trust me, people here are pissed and it's going to get ugly in Nicosia and at the banks. Whenever they decide it's safe to to re-open...

These picture made me realize that the EU will get away with everything as planned. Maybe they aren''t as stupid as everyone thinks. Will there even be a bank run in other countries? The reaction of most Europeans, no matter what is done to them, is a colective shrug.

Sorry guys, Cyprus, as the event itself, is a non-event.

Seeing a couple of pictures of  a dozen people protesting is nothing.

If there were riots in the streets, I'd pay attention.

The pay-attention factor here is precedent that this actions sets.

Cyprus is a bug that hit the windshield.
