IMF's Lagarde Flat Raided Over French 'Payout' Probe

Tyler Durden's picture

In a follow-up to investigations over alleged wrongdoing surrounding a EUR285mm payout by the then French finance minister and now IMF head, The Telegraph reports, Christine Lagarde's Paris flat has been raided. The fresh (if you're an orange) faced IMF Chief, of course, denies any wrongdoing in the case of a huge 2008 compensation payment to businessman supporter of ex-President Sarkozy. On the bright side, at least there were no indiscretions in hotel rooms involved (yet it seems she is following in the strong footsteps of her predecessor DSK - how can we not trust these people?)

Via RT,

The Court of Justice of the Republic ordered a probe into the case under the suspicion that Lagarde had committed an abuse of power by releasing the funds to Tapie. The then socialist opposition alleged that Nicolas Sarkozy’s government was rewarding the businessman Tapie for his support during the 2007 elections.

Via The Telegraph,

French police raid IMF chief Christine Lagarde's flat in Bernard Tapie probe

French authorities have searched the Paris flat of IMF chief Christine Lagarde as part of an investigation into her handling of a 2008 compensation payment to a businessman supporter of ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy, her lawyer said.

Police are investigating claims that Lagarde, when French Finance Minister under Nicolas Sarkozy, acted illegally in approving the €285m arbitration payout to Bernard Tapie.

Lagarde denies any wrongdoing.

"This search will help uncover the truth, which will contribute to exonerating my client from any criminal wrongdoing," Lagarde's lawyer, Yves Repiquet, told Reuters.

See ZH and other websites.

The IMF was prime driver of the take from Cyprus bank accounts.

You have fractional reserve banking in the Euro zone - short equation from there.

Also affront to KGB/Russia by attempt to take Russian funds; destabilizing action by IMF.

Why would the Eurogroup members go along with an IMF gambit to blow up Eurozone fractional reserve banking? Interesting, but I'm not ready to buy.

The explanation that Germany is after a pound of flesh makes more sense, given that Cyprus is essentially a Russian mafia tax haven and base of operations and everyone knows it. I think they were willing to risk a bank run to force Cyprus to go to their Russian masters for operating funds.

Sleep with dogs, wake up with fleas, as they say in the old country.

Why are the French police going through Christine's dirty panties?

Wed, 03/20/2013 - 13:16 | 3352814 blu

The timing is indeed suspicious.

Let us assume that contrary to expectations the IMF is not welcome at this party.

The IMF is the US and TheFed, afterall, and can be expected to broadly represent US strategic interests abroad. I wonder if the US would have looked with extreme disfavor on the Germans turning petty (in the run-up to German general elections) and going at it hammer-and-tongs with the Cypriots when the Russians are lurking around. We get the sense now that going after savings has forced Cyprus into negotiating with the Russians, who certainly have some interest in Cypriot mineral rights and naval bases. The US State Department is probably having an aneurysm about now.

If the IMF has been behind the scenes the last few days hitting the Germans and French with the idiot stick, then I can see the IMF head having her panties raided as a return favor.

So much conjecture, so little substance.

It's fun to pretend that there is some kind of uber-conspiracy behind all this. More likely is that the EU and IMF had no friggin' clue that the actual people might mind having their bank accounts confiscated. I mean these are just absolutely clueless bureaucrats, just take a look at Von Rompoy for example. Do you think he has ANY chance of understanding any of this? Just bumbling bureaucrats just like BenB, sitting there with their textbooks and formulas.

Yes, Lagarde basically expressed the view that Greeks were unworthy of sympathy for being unable to obtain life-saving drugs because "they" didn't pay their taxes. That the ones who didn't pay taxes were probably not the ones unable to afford medical care didn't seem to faze her.

From The Guardian, May 25, 2012:

"Asked if she is essentially saying to the Greeks and others in Europe that they have had a nice time and it is now payback time, she responds: 'That's right.'"

I applaud your lamppost idea. I raised it several weeks ago, and also received several negative dings. I think those who are opposed to the hanging of the dirtbags are the biggest problemwe have in this country. Why? Because they give cover to the criminals who know that political correctness and the anti-death penalty people will protect them from "real" harm. Look at the ridiculous light penaties given against the big time crooks - steal 500 million get penalized 10 million. And no jail sentences for anyone. So guess who gives the negative dings - the supporters of the bad guys who masquerade as do-gooders. They should be added to the group that needs to be hungn from the lampposts.

this is very Kaiser sozee'ish. We raid the flat 4 years after the deed.

Looking of banana peels? Usual suspects to be rounded up?

Wind n piss, typical left right indignancy both on the same, real hidden agenda! This lady is doing God's work today!

Isn't life wondefully awesome and difficult for our stressed leaders as they do battle with the media so that the semblance of democracy is maintained as facade of civilization. "we are not corrupt, the hand of justice does work as you can see...Yes 4 years later after an arbitration tribunal said he, Mr Tapie, had been stymied by socialist vigilante justice in the first place...Which was true. French justice is like France weather vane symbol  "le coq gaulois", it turns with the wind!

So a tradition that was born in 1303, when France's first legal eagle captured the Pope in a hijack at Agnani, leading subsequently for his successor to move Papal shop to Avignon, huge french king's victory over the Roman Curia; followed by the famous trumped up trial of the Templars; shows to this day that in matters of STATE, the french judge crawls as lowly in private before the king as he stands tall dressed in his robes broidered with sable before the public.

RAISON D'ETAT OBLIGE!  Thank you Cardinal Richelieu for making this feudal regal tradition nation state tradition. NApoleon and De Gaulle just followed in his foot steps!

If George Hamilton and Rachel Maddow had a bastard son, he'd look a lot like madame lagarde. I recall she had some investigarion postponed or stayed when she originally took over for dominique the drillpress. Shocking. A criminal in a prominent position.

If you've been reading Jim Sinclair (KWN), you know the IMF MUST reverse course and baii out the Cyprus banks.  They'll end up looking stupid and loose influence for proposing such a stupid idea in the first place.  But it gets the Russians off thier backs, and keeps the other countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy etc)  from freaking out totally. Pretneding "it was all a little mistake and everything is fine"  'is the only option they have.  But having Lagarde go down in the middle of this is a total disaster.  Somebody is trying to throw a major monkey wrench into recovery, with the intended outcome the collapse of the EU. The IMF is an instrument of US foreign policy, so this is getting ugly.

Everyone that had a hand in the Russian Rip Off AKA:Cyrpus bail-in should watch their backs.
