Nonetheless, you're right that the average Cypriot indirectly benefited from and never bothered to challenge the financialization that took hold of their economy. As long as easy credit was made available to the public and some high-paying do-nothing jobs in finance were made available to the natives, the country accepted the status quo.
Now that the whole system is breaking down, they don't know what to do. Are they going to tear down the banking system that provides them with easy credit? What does life look like without that?
We can't escape the core of the crisis which is that there are quite a few nations that feel entitled to a particular lifestyle but can not afford that level of consumption in real economic terms.
