Finally some truth in MSM...

After the Federal Reserve reaffirmed its easy money policy Wednesday, Chairman Ben Bernanke was asked whether the U.S. would ever think of taxing bank depositors as Cyprus has done. He said that was very unlikely but Jim Rickards, senior managing director of Tangent Capital Partners, says the Fed already has its hands in depositors’ pockets.

“Nobody is stealing more money from bank depositors than Ben Bernanke,” Rickards tells The Daily Ticker. Bernanke's doing that, Rickards says, by maintaining interest rates near zero.

“At this stage of a recovery normalized interest rates should be around 2-3%,” says Rickards. “Apply that 2-3%…to the entire multi-trillion-dollar deposit base of the United States of America and that’s a $400-billion per year wealth transfer from savers to bankers so they can pay themselves bigger bonuses or make crazy bets.” Over time, Rickards says, that wealth transfer could reach $1 trillion.

Rickards says zero interest rates are just one way the Fed is fleecing depositors. Others include increasing inflation, which Bernanke is trying to do, and taxing deposits like Cyprus is pushing for. “Bernanke is stealing more money from depositors than Cyprus is... looting everyday Americans—teachers, firemen and retirees,” says Rickards.

There’s another way, of course, to view Fed policy: that near-zero interest rates and $85 billion worth of asset purchases every month are helping to boost economic growth and employment and maintain low interest rates for both short-term and long-term debt. Bernanke himself, testifying before the Senate Banking Committee late last month, said, “The benefits of asset purchases, and of policy accommodation more generally, are clear…monetary policy is providing important support to the recovery.”

But Rickards says the easy money policy is creating asset bubbles that may feel good for now but will eventually crash. Cyprus could crash much sooner than that.

Exactly.

From Feb. 2008 - Feb. 2013, Shadowstats.com's bar graph shows the real inflation damage to be about 3x the BLS 9.7%... or, about 30% confiscation. If any shadowstat.com subscribers have access to the actual number, please share it with us.

Go read this article from the Telegraph.  Go to their comments section and read what the Europeans are posting there.  VERY telling...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/cyprus/9945446/Open-talk-of-Cyprus-leaving-euro-as-British-savings-are-put-at-risk.html#dsq-comments

And of course part of the cause of the Cypriot problem is that Cypriot banks were heavily lent to Greece, so the Troika exacerbated the situation by imposing a haircut on Cypriot banks (and weakened them) when they bailed out Greece last year.

Just heard Greg Palast say on Alex Jones that he and Stiglitz were told this is the bankstes "riot doctorine." What happens next is that the banksters move in and replace the existing Government with a technocrat. Once that is done the Cypriots are forced to give all the oil and gas reseverves over to the globalists.

Sounds reasonable but we would have never had the Beverly Hillbillys if that is the way things work.

I do give the Jackboots a little credit though. Those grunts on the ground may fight against their fellow citizens for a lot of reasons, but bankers paying them in the same counterfiet money that destroyed their own families and their country ain't one of them.

Joseph Stalin would know that it's time to start playing the ideological music to the masses, but bankers just ain't got that much jazz.

RT seems to be on top of this story. So odd to get up in the morning and switch on RT to get the news. I sometimes switch over to CNN or CNBC to see what stories they are running. MY god, seriously, the contrast will blow your fucking mind! Blow it clean UP!

The US media is so much up the ass of the corporations and the US political elite. Story after story of Obama pledging alligance to Israel, claiming that we Americans owe Isreal everything. We owe them our money, our weapons and our alligance for ever and ever!

I never sighned on anywhere to be a slave of Israel. What power do they hold over us 315 million people? It is like they fucking OWN us!

Cyprus is a sign of bigger things. The Russian connection is big here. The EU is enraged that Cyprus would even talk to Russia about bailout loans and energy development. What, in this day and age, he who has real money, not funny US dollars money, is now moving into a power postion. Russia and China do not need to borrow money to function or to invest. The EU and the USA can't survive for a day without a massive influx of borrowed and printed money, Both the ECB and the Fed have vowed unlimited money printing and QE. The UK also is printing unlimited pounds. Cyprus has hitched their wagon to a sinking ship.

russia's had one nightmarish contemporary that it wishes it could forget about-- that being 'stalin' [lenin was a moderate, but stalin was a tyrant] that slaughtered his own countrymen... as did 'mao' of china-- which was worse, both!!!

my point being-- the russian's were never bad people... in fact, it was they, that helped lincoln win the civil war-- setting up a russian fleet along florida where the rothschilds were arming the confederate's? i'll leave it at that... but, let us not forget what the war of 1812 was all about either!?

bottom line: america has destroyed more democracy's and created more wars in the last century and a quarter... all in the name of peace-- blessed by our foreign policy and trilateralist agenda's that has made us the curse of this nascent zeitgeist, digitalized world!

Northern Cyprus is governed under an elected government that is heavily influenced by Turkey.

Northern Cyprus (or North Cyprus), officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC; Turkish: Kuzey K?br?s Türk Cumhuriyeti), is a self-declared state[2] that comprises the northeastern part of the island of Cyprus. Recognised only by Turkey,[3] Northern Cyprus is considered by the international community as occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus.[4][5]

...

The Turkish Army maintains a large force in Northern Cyprus with its presence supported and approved by the TRNC government, which the Republic of Cyprus regards as an illegal occupation force, with its presence denounced in several United Nations Security Council resolutions.[9]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Cyprus

Also, it appears that Turkey is not going to stand by and let Cyprus negotiate away the potential gas reserves, which it considers to be shared resources:

Ankara may challenge Cypriot use of gas reserves in bailout

There is more to this than most people know. Cyprus recently discovered huge amounts of natural gas in their waters. The plan was to supply Europe with it (up to 40% of Europes needs). This would diminish Russia's energy grip on Europe. This is why Cyprus is playing Russia againt the EU right now. If Cyprus and Russia work out a deal (Russia bails them out and protects them, in exchange for control of natural gas and ability to put military bases there) it is curtains for Europe energy wise, as Russia will have the ability to turn off their energy. This is more than just the EU ripping off Cypriots for the bankers. This is geopolitical stuff and war possibilities. Besides the energy there is also the big division between the Greeks and Turks in Cyprus. That could re-inflame and create a civil war as well. You can be very certain that Russia will do everything possible to take advantage of this situation. The bankers have just opened up a pandora's box. Stay tuned.

with half or more of the peoples carrying cell-phone cameras, "shop yer neighbour" has never been e-z -err. . .

folks are already set up in their minds to see each other as competition, be it for resources or just attention, when the childish "me first, fk the rest of you" really starts to take off, whatever "trust" might be lingering amongst the individuals will evaporate.

"know your community, and know why you trust them."

Housing crisis has destroyed communities.  Neighbors are strangers.  Houses have been foreclosed on twiice on my streets in last 8 years.  Renters now are in place and they come and go.

The sense of community in the United States has been destroyed and I believe that was also a goal.

Thu, 03/21/2013 - 20:27 | 3359960 Cathartes Aura
Cathartes Aura's picture

perhaps we can all re-define community, and not necessarily reference artificial neighbourhoods - a house next door doesn't always mean community. . .

community is a trusted networks of people who can rely on each other, and the trust is built up over time - particularly in times of stress, as recently.

so one needn't even live in the same "city" to have effective community support. . . in fact, when peoples are becoming more dis-placed, as recently, distant community can be very value-able.

amrka has been cultivated for "competitive" behaviour, and this does not foster real community - some folks here will have to re-learn how to be a part of a whole, and not so much apart from the whole.

or not.  each chooses. . .

Perhaps the smokescreen that you're attributing to the IMF/ECB/FED might not be the result of them setting fires? (think Goldman Sachs and all that they were allowed to do [by this witches brew of acronyms] which is really THE undercurrents)

You'd think that the Greeks would have known to end the word, "fasismos", with a lower case Stigma instead of a lower case Sigma.

The Russian word was also a little surprising.

Curious lettering on the sign. Is this CIA Propaganda, staged, for our viewing?

Watching local Cyprus news, in english, with good comments after most articles, gives me a real feel for what it's like watching my bank close, my stores, auto and other repair shops and restaurants refusing credit cards and checks, and energizes my stacker-prepper energies.  I just learned that the Bank Popular, or Laiki, is pronounced "Leaky":

They've been calling it"likey" here,  as in popular

Okay,

Now it gets interesting;

Russia 'rethinking' holding Euros in reserves.

From that article:

"This is a big money but for us, as for any other country, predictability is important, while the proposal (to levy a tax on bank deposits) was not only unpredictable but is evidence of a certain inadequacy," Medvedev was quoted as saying.

"inadequacy," ya think?  I'm thinking "desperation," as in entities that are BROKE and require the import of a LOT of ENERGY.

Where would Russia shift all that money?   (I don't want to utter the wrong words here so I'll let someone else do the honors.)

I have never seen policemen behaving so politely! No blood, no gases, no kettling... this is not a civilized country for sure.

OK, I read through about 500 comments and maybe I missed the part about the proposed Russian naval base in Cyprus causing the CIA to direct the Eurozone to create a Cypriot banking crisis in order to make Cyprus less palatable to the Russians.

I havent seen that stratfor (or whoever) map of carrier deployments in a while...do we have a carrier on a Med cruise yet?

Only two reason how this could be true:

1) They're STUPID.

2) They're DESPERATE.

OR... maybe they figure the euro is doomed and they're trying to flush everything toward the USD?  (Russia holding 42% of Russia's FX holdings are in the euro) It is, after all, primarily the US that covers their backs, with guns.

Regardless, Russia has the winning hand.  And I'm sure if they need any extra support they can call upon China (energy deal in the works).
