Cyprus Officially Passes Capital Controls Into Law

Tyler Durden's picture

While it is unknown if the Cypriot parliament will agree to, and enact into law, the Troika-demanded deposit haircuts, after the shocking vote of mutiny against Merkel earlier this week that saw not one politician vote for the Europe suggested deposit tax levy (and even the ruling party abstained), a vote which will once more take place tomorrow, moments ago Cyprus became the first Eurozone country to officially implement governmental capital controls into legislation. At this point it had no choice: whatever happens with the deposit haircut, or with everything else, it is now inevitable that the local Cypriots will do all they can to pull as much money from domestic banking system as possible following the complete loss of faith and trust in banks, which is why the government had no choice but to intervene with its own "controls." Sadly, this marks a milestone in the development of the Eurozone - it's all downhill, and accelerating, from here.

There are various other proposals which are currently being voted on, all of which are secondary to the Capital Controls one (the restructuring of the broke banks is perhaps the next most important one), until tomorrow's vote on deposit haircuts.

A photo from today's historic session in Cypriot parliament, in which the first every capital controls in Eurozone history were voluntarily legislated can be seen below.

    Here is the RTRS article. (read the comments section) has some interesting insights. Personally I think Cyprus should tell the EU to F off.

Thanks for the link.  This caught my attention:

Retailers, facing cash-on-delivery demands from suppliers, warned stocks were running low.

"At the moment, supplies will last another two or three days," said Adamos Hadijadamou, head of Cyprus's Association of Supermarkets. "We'll have a problem if this is not resolved by next week."

Hunger is not easily forgotten in a lifetime, even after financial wounds have healed.

If many Cypriots see their children starving you can bet that it will never be forgotten.

Banks are everywhere, easy targets and they will be razed to the ground.

The EU is stupid to think they can teach the common people a lesson if it actually comes to starvation.

Stop reading the filth on MW; it's WSJ propaganda and its fascits moderators silenced all dissent from commentors years ago.  Their "journalists" are the worst of statists and they are mostly not even fit for writing on WSJ so they are relegated to the MW pits of hell.  The average MW reader has an IQ less than the current price of silver (it could go up of course but it is suppressed surreptitiously by centrally planned education).

Yes, the PMI for the eurozone has had a major turnaround due to the sound monetary and economic polices of the Troika.  The PMI increased from an absolute low of 39.66 last month to 41.56 for March.  Although the economic experts acknowledged that there will still be some way to go until a positive 50 figure for the PMI is reached, it was clear that based on this months PMI that the corner has been turned and the policies of the wise central economic planners have been vindicated.

How do they expect to receive another euro in deposit going forward?  How is this sustainable from a business standpoint?  They apparently can control how much money someone can take out on a daily basis but did they pass some control forcing a person to make another deposit, ever?

Which goes to prove this maxim: when it can no longer be denied what must be done to prepare for the worst, it's already too late to do it.

I have read that by the time the Nazis herded the Polish jews into ghettos and began loading them into cattle cars, TWO-THIRDS of the jews in Poland had already fled the country.

They saw what was coming, cashed in what they could, and got the hell out with their skins intact.  Almost 100% of those who stayed (for whatever reason, one of which was denial) died in concentration camps.

When the banking system in the US suddenly shuts down, how many citizens will have any cash at home?  But you can rest assured that the day is coming, just like it did in Cyprus.

Good secondary question but consider this:  If a loaf of bread is $100 tomorrow, the man who has $500 in his pocket is far better off than the man with $20 or nothing.  Better to have some no matter the trade value.  If it goes directy to zero, we have bigger problems  than how much cash we hung on to.

You know... I'm not purposefully trying to be a hard ass here, but I have to say this...

~~~
At this point in the game [holocaust wise], every last molecule of saline solution of tears has been wrung from the handkerchief due to the incessant force feeding on the subject that I've been bombarded with in my life...
Sorry ~ but it's true... There's not even vapor left in the tear ducts... Cried out completely... Done... Finished...
So now where are we?... You want to CONTINUE the game & take it a step further?... You want to go ahead & say that the PRESENT DAY resembles Poland 1939?... Perhaps it's TRUE... But if it is, then two BLANTANT things stand out in my mind...
1. That the fucking NAZI's, this time around, wear jewish banker suits...
OR
2. If I can't do anything about it... I'm not going to be some dumb ass sap that believes a GODDAMNED JEW BANKER when they tell me the water is fine & to step inside [the gas chamber] & relax... Instead ~ I'll go out with my pistols blazing... MOLON LABE BITCHEZ...
~~~

The combination of BOTH of those is why I'm DONE with listening to all the incessant bullshit... [It has nothing to do with whether it's TRUE or not... RATHER... It's what you end up WEAVING out of the story... FUCK YOU ~ life is hard, people get fucked by other people, some 'waltz straight in' because they're saps... GET OVER IT!]...

What's fucking IDIOTIC is that this comment will be a JUNK MAGNET... Rest assured, that the JUNKERS that it attracts will be the same 'POOR' dumb saps that walked into the aforementioned chambers... They'll be the same poor dumb saps that some francis_sawyer, 80 years from now, will be writing about & getting junked for because an 80 year full court press was put upon the emotional strings of 3 generation to extract the price of '10 eyes' for the price of 'one eye'...

i wish i could say the abused became the abuser to this:

the fucking NAZI's, this time around, wear jewish banker suits..

however, i dont remember hearing of any hofjuden family members being incinerated in any oven; the records would show that hofjuden financed the war,  betrayed common jews, which then led to the widespread persecution of jews,  which then became pretext for stealing palestinian land for israel.

edit: which brings me to the conclusion that the culprits continue wearing banker suits; and also happen to be predominantly jewish; and with the blessing of the jesuit order, the hofjuden are yet again in charge of it all. /back to you

I won't really argue...

~~~
But it's the SCOPE of the thing that matters most...
Fast forward to 2013... Nowadays ~ nobody could tell the difference between Clark Kent or a Clark Bar... Hell ~ I'll bet most couldn't tell Justin Beiber from Selena Gomez... You think they can even come close to understanding the concept of hofjuden, or what that means?...
It gets worse...
Why isn't Steven Spielberg coming out with films that depict how the 'hofjuden' betrayed their own people?... No ~ Instead all you get is this canned shit about how jews have suffered all throughout RECORDED civilization... Oh ~ it's EASTER/PASSOVER week, cue the BEN HUR/10 COMMANDMENTS movie marathon...
Where are the HOLODOMOR movies?... Even Spielberg's 'LINCOLN' was a pile of mis-directed crap... It's history RE-WRITTEN to make it seem that Lincoln's only motivation in life was to fucking end slavery, which is a sly shine on the same slavery/bondage/mistreatment meme... At least I can't call Spielberg stupid... He understands full well that on a subliminal basis, the average public will link the two ideas in their hardwired brains [whether or not they even went to see the movie at all]... Just the 'publicity' is enough...
Why would Spielberg bother?... Because he's OUT OF ideas on different ways to make Nazis bad guys [save for "motherfucking space nazi's from the dark side of the moon']... Think I'm joking?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeIu1FiTTyI
~~~

Fucking Hitler didn't even write Mein Kampf... I'm NOT trying to exonerate Hitler here... Just trying to highlight that clever jews have gotten MORE than their pound of flesh out of anytime their TRIBE has been mistreated throughout history... Perhaps if they'd made a better effort to MIX with the rest of the people in the world, none of these things would have happened...

NONE of that is for me to JUDGE... But I'm done shedding tears about their travails, OR WORSE, being mocked, judged, junked, & stickered with an 'ANTI-SEMITE' label because my ducts have dried up & I'm no longer shedding crocodile tears like some fucking North Korean foto-op that shows the wailing & sadness of the 'PEOPLE' at Kim Jong Il's funeral to avoid getting sent to the gulag... Especially in light of the present day situation [& from where it overwhelmingly stems]...

But it doesn't still doesn't change the fact that 'run of the mill' jews have skated on the coattails [to purposefully mix metaphors], of the last round of MISTREATMENT for the past 70 years [which is a time period that has easily engulfed my sorry existence]...

& if 'WASH, RINSE & REPEAT' is the playbook... FINE... But there's little chance that I'll be around to have the opportunity to skate on any coattails if, by chance, my random TRIBE [even if loosely distinguished] will be the pinata that gets pummeled [by your playbook scenario] this or the next time around by the 'Wizard of Oz' hofjudenistic jesuit controlled, moloch worshipping high priests...

To further that... the reason why

can be gleaned and extrapolated from these two essays:

http://www.garynorth.com/public/10771.cfm

simply, the hofjuden are making sure their financial crimes and culpability in all the atrocities their central banks financed and were part of is not within public knowledge.  if it wouldnt be spielberg, it would be somebody else who would sell his/her soul and spread lies.  just like phd's spread lies for tenure, the jews spread lies to fit their agenda.  it simply doesnt pay to tell the truth.  you have your price too; and if you got paid enough, you would stfu.  i know i would stfu if i got paid (enough).  and if i get paid well, sadly, i would spread lies too.

I can quite honestly state this... There was a time in my life that I would have done it [SOLD OUT]... But... [& this is big]... It would have occurred when I was ALMOST TOTALLY UNINFORMED about the larger picture...

So ~ at this moment in time... I'd refuse [to the point of DEATH ~ I mean that]... It's just not worth it... & don't bother pushing me on that subject because the distinction is rather EASY... Before one truly understands what 'selling your soul' means, his soul may be purchased... and that's where your frustration is - the vast majority, regardless of ethnicity, sold out and is prepared to stfu or spread lies for, to use your term, joobux which the hofjuden print at will.  whether we like it or not, by controlling central banks, the hofjuden (with the blessing of their jesuit masters), enslaved humanity by debt.

Understand that my 'outspokenness' on the subject has very little to do with any personal anger that I feel... I made that distinction in a comment the other day... I said it was akin to being in a forest & hating poison ivy, or poisonous mushrooms, or fire ants... It does no good to stand in front of a 100 foot Tidal Wave & shake your fist at it...

Instead ~ if I could put my finger more accurately on it, I'd describe it more like loneliness... It get's lonely out there when you're the only one in your neighborhood that has taken the RED PILL... At least in the movie 'The Matrix', when you took the Red Pill, you got to go live in a space ship surrounded by a bunch of other Red pillers... Here ~ It's like taking the Red Pill & then having to still go about your business in a Blue Pill world...

I truly don't know what I'd do if I had any kids... The again ~ maybe it would be the best possible thing because hopefully they'd end up being an onion layer of Red Pill candidates...

F~S, are you telling me that you actually watched Lincoln?  You did not pay for the dishonor did you?  I have to agree that there will always be a few of us out there and that we do not make good mass men.  I run into this shit everyday and it's not just Jews.  I possess a very specialized body of knowledge inside my thick skull that has been gained from reading, actual experience and to a minor degree, that university education that I paid way too much for.

I typically do not last long with companies.  The longest stretch so far is seven years.  I am in horticulture.  Horticulture and "modern business practices", AKA pure bullshit, do not mix well.  I do not listen well to corporate fucks who "know better" because they have an MBA from some fuckstick Ivy League school.  I understand plant physiology, not corporate boardroom bullshit about maximizing this or that, because they will assume one growing condition or another.  Fuck off with the boardroom bullshit.  Now I am at the mercy of the god damned weather AND some fuckhead CEO and board of directors?

Last spring, I became employed by another company.  A very small local company.  One thing I overlooked that I should not have is that the new GM is from Florida.  He has no fucking clue what is going on in the northern climes yet he makes decisions that cost us sales.  i.e. He thought winter in MN was over on March 1 and made some really poor unilateral decisions.LMAO  I can not stand by and let that sort of shit happen and I SAY something.  No one else does though and then the bitter infighting starts amongst the other employees.  You can bet they all support me but they won't stand up.  There is no political bullshit with plants for fucks sakes.  The plants are either dying or thriving.

I have said this time and time again; when I was in university there were 1500 business admin majors and about 20 horticulture majors.  Hell, I already had many years of in-field experience with plants BEFORE I went to school for it.  But now, I have some biz- major types telling me what is best plant management practice?LOL  Really???  HAHAHAHA!  That's rich.  But no, they always know better than me what to do even though they do not even have a cursory knowledge of basic chemistry.  So you do what they say and watch the sales and plants go into the shitter and then you look for a new job.

Here is an example:

Me:  We have an aphid outbreak and need to spray.

BizMajor:  Well, that would cost money.

Me:  Well, they will kill and/or stunt the plants so we have to do something right now.

IdiotMajor:  Well, lets just wait and see.  We will have to have to have an executive board meeting to approve the expense.

Me:  You are a bunch of fucking idiots.

Morons:  You are fired!

That's the basic story anyway and that is why I will always back the likes of Francis~Sawyer for at least speaking the truth when it needs to be spoken.  What F~S says here on ZH, is in my estimation, at least reasonable to consider and is not generated by "hate".  I think I can stand with Francis in saying that we hate everyone equally and I think probably more than anything, we wonder what the fuck is that matter with some of you.  Someday, I will tell you all about my battles with HR depts.  What a bunch of fucking losers those prematurely grey-haired cunts are.

Resistance to the TPTB never ends well for me no matter what tin gods they think they are.  It's a curse I guess in a way.  I can't help myself from telling sheeple, who deserve to be told, to fuck right off.  I don't think a lot of ZHers are the subservient type either.

Carry on.

I was in the process of typing the following as an ADD ON...

I know where you're coming from [in terms of frustration]... Luckily for me, I've never really had to work for anybody... I've had moments that I worked for some organization in my life, but they were always things that I enjoyed, then moved on...

You have a conundrum because it appears that you enjoy WHAT you do, but don't enjoy the STRUCTURE or the apparent restrictions that ANY structure places on a persons fluidity & creativity... I can't make any recommendations because, neither are they mine to make, nor can I even guess as to any liabilities you may face...

All I can say is ~ the day you break free from the structure will be the happiest one you'll ever remember... Once you break free ~ you never go back...

Well, Thank You Francis.  I have a lot of issues to deal with.  Number one would be liquidate this property I own NW WI.  It's more of an estate situation.  Think inheritance but with legal consideration well over a decade ago.  The place is great for detonating tannerite and shooting venison out the laundry room window but it is costing a me a small fortune in heat, elec and taxes and no one is even there save for me once in while.  Maybe some wealthier ZHer's would be interested in buying?  Clear title from 1963 paid in cash.  No MERS.  Actually have note and abstract.

Then there is the Russia real estate situation.  I married one of them and no, it was not a fucking mail order bride!  I'm so sick of hearing that accusation.  She is from a good family and they own some "stuff" but the old soviet passed away some time ago and left it to my Mother-in-law who has recently said that she will pay for us to move to Russia because she thinks there is a market for my thick-skulled horticultural expertise there.(huh? um... well)

Meanwhile, MILF-in-Law wants to sell the place and move to an apartment now.(they call them flats...whatever...)  The old soviet aced out his sons on that property.  The sons received other assets but some shit was started intra-family.  Yikes.  I am technically the only male heir in this scenario though other than our two year old son.   I am getting a headache because I do not know the best course of action to take.  I do not speak Russian (much) and I own a varying degree of metals and related equipment that won't pass any fascist state's customs.

Mom-in-law is one hell of an accountant in her own right and has the business of some of the major industry in Southern Russia.  I do not fully understand how it all works to be honest but she has cash at all times.  I do not ask.

If you are staying Francis, then I am staying.(and my metal too)

"While it is unknown if the Cypriot parliament will agree to, and enact into law, the Troika-demanded deposit haircuts, after the shocking vote of mutiny against Merkel earlier this week that saw not one politician vote for the Europe suggested deposit tax levy (and even the ruling party abstained),"

the ruling party abstained because they were the ones the rejected the 15 % on the over 100k confiscation with funding for the banks that the ecb et al originally proposed as the way to raise all of the cyprus "contibution".

the ruling party pres of cyp was the one who insisted on taking that number down to under 10% saving his cronies 1/3 of their losses at the expense of the under 100k insured crowd. and then could not vote against what they had demanded. he just overestimated his control of the votes and tried to save face by 'abstaining' .

from the zh linked article:

'Party officials told Reuters that discussions were centred on a levy on depositors holding over 100,000 euros.'

the ecb did in no way want to breach the secured from the beginning. and they are now forcing that outcome, and imo, extracting an extra % etc to make their point.

 ecb should go back to their original offer of 15 % on the over 100k and fund the banks like they said they would. buy the time for an orderly unwind of the insolvents without sacrifice the good banks and extracting extra hardship on the poorer of the land of cyprus.

not that they will.

but that's another story.

Europeans believe that the gov can fix anything. It's contradictory to say that they don't like their govs, because they have no other option.

If the govs impose capital controls, the europeans would believe that it's good for them. Brainwashing is complete there and here in Canada.

I find your posts enlightening and interesting but have to disagree here. I've worked and lived in a few countries (am Canadian and here now). Europeans and, to a lesser extent Canadians, are much more questioning of government than in the US. I think it may be related to the fact that these countries have multi-party systems or maybe that we are not empire.

That being said would love to get your take on the recent budget and Flaherty's Manulife mortgage call. I'm not a fan of the current government but I think they are running scared and trying best to shelter Canada from the upcoming shit storm.

Not quite on the same scale--but the Cypriots have given the US a handy blueprint:

- Restrictions in daily withdrawals
- Ban on premature termination of time savings deposits
- Compulsory renewal of all time savings deposits upon maturity
- Conversion of current accounts to time deposits
- Ban or restrictions on non cash transactions
- Restrictions on use of debit, credit or prepaid debit cards
- Ban or restriction on cashing in checks
- Restrictions on domestic interbank transfers or transfers within the same bank
- Restrictions on the interactions/transactions of the public with credit institutions
- Restrictions on movements of capital, payments, transfers
- Any other measure which the Secretary of the Treasury or the Governors of the Federal Reserve see necessary for reasons of public order and safety

The awful ruin of Europe, with all its vanished glories, glares us in the eyes.

When the designs of wicked men or the aggressive urge of mighty States dissolve over large areas the frame of civilised society, humble folk are confronted with difficulties with which they cannot cope. For them all is distorted, all is broken, even ground to pulp.

From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an Iron Curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe.

The sense you are having of security because you are having your golds is being a foolish sense to be having.  When governments is saying to all the peoples it is wanting all the wealths the people are having it will be telling them it is wanting to be having the gold the peoples are having too.  Many peoples will not be giving the governments their gold but the governments will be telling all the peoples that they cannot be having golds.   This will be meaning that to be selling golds or to be buying golds will mean that the peoples who would be buying the golds will be breaking the laws and they will be afraid to be buying it and if no peoples will be buying it then the peoples who are having will not be able to be selling it.

Golds are being good when there are some stabilities but it is needing some stabilities for it to be having any values because gold is not having any values by itself.

This Cyprus business reminds me of one of my late fathers' favorite jokes.

Taken I believe from a Jonathan Winters album:

The Lone Ranger and Tonto are surrounded by a million hostile indians.

Lone Ranger: Uh,I dunno Tonto,it isn't looking good.We may not make it out of this one.

Tonto: What do you mean "we",paleface?

When i was younger I believed the great problem the anti-christ would solve for the world would either be the Palestinian/Israeli issue or global hunger.  It looks like i'll need to add the collapsing global economy to the list of potential problems that will propel the anti-christ to power.  I guess we'll have to wait and see....we'll know soon enough.

So is this the new playbook? We steal depositor money or we guarantee you financial Armegeddon?

Sinclair had some interesting takes on the palace intrigue:

Says Bernanke is really pissed at Lagarde because it undoes everything he's been attempting to do through QE.

If there is a whiff that this is supposed to replace QE then bottom falls out of the markets.

Says Bennie will pull an LBJ when his term is up to avoid the coming shitstorm.

Says Lagarde and the old money Eurocrats are so petty they did this because they resent the Russian neuvo-rich that much

"it is now inevitable that the local Cypriots will do all they can to pull as much money from domestic banking system as possibl"

Will they, really?

Will they storm the bank vaults and demand return of their deposits in full?

Somehow I don't think so.

I'm done worrying about it, communism isn't so bad.  You get your bread, your borcht and your vodka, your one vote for your one candidate, what else does one need?

That's not common people's money, because common people have not much money left anyway.

It seems to me this is rich robbing rich. What do you  think?

Nope. You are far more fucked than that. You would still be running a deficit, increasing the national debt.

You're going to have to cut trillions, AND increase taxes.
