Russian Billionaire In Exile Boris Berezovsky Commits Suicide - The First Cyprus Casualty?

Tyler Durden's picture

Just your ordinary run of the mill Russian billionaire oligarch in exile who had so much money he was terminally depressed... or just the opposite, and the first tragic casualty of the Cyprus capital controls which are about to eviscerate a whole lot of Russian wealth (and ultraluxury Manhattan real estate prices)?

From RT:

Exiled Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky has died at the age 67, according to a Facebook post from his son-in-law Egor Schuppe. Details regarding the nature of his death are yet to be released.

His death has not been officially confirmed, and details have not been disclosed.

According to Schuppe, Berezovsky was recently depressed. He failed to keep in touch with friends and acquaintances, and often chose to stay at home rather than go out.

Damian Kudriavtsev, the former CEO of Kommersant Publishing House also commented on the businessman’s death saying he passed away at 11:00 GMT in London.

On his twitter account, Kudriavtsev said there were no signs of a violent death.

Aleksandr Dobrovinksy, a famous lawyer and head of Moscow-based The Alexander Dobrovinsky & Partners law firm has said that Berezovsky committed suicide.

“Just got a call from London. Boris [Abramovich] Berezovsky committed suicide. He was a difficult man. A move of disparity? Impossible to live poor? A strike of blows? I am afraid no one will get to know now,” the lawyer said on his social network page.

BBC confirms the death:

Berezovsky has been found dead at his home in Surrey.

The circumstances of the death of Mr Berezovsky - a wanted man in Russia, and an opponent of President Vladimir Putin - are not yet known.

A former Kremlin power-broker whose fortunes declined under Mr Putin, Mr Berezovsky emigrated to the UK in 2000.

Last year, he lost a £3bn ($4.7bn) damages claim against Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.

Mr Berezovsky claimed he had been intimidated by Mr Abramovich into selling shares in Russian oil giant Sibneft for a "fraction of their true worth".

The allegations were completely rejected by the London Commercial Court judge, who called Mr Berozovsky an "inherently unreliable" witness

His name was Boris Berezovsky.

Thx a lot.

People who are born and grew up in the west live in a bubble.

Like for example the idea to tax 15% of italian deposits. This is lunacy.

That's where italian and other international western mafia has the money.

There is one thing to rob from russians and chinese, there's another thing, totally different, to rob from your own bad guys.

I've long contended the most aware folks tend to be those whose allegiance to a particular nationstate-flag gets interrupted by the reality of living abroad.

I leave specific predictions to others cuz you're way better at it! To me, this is just more proof the West is dead and the oligarchs are merely fighting over the carcass like they did when the Soviet Union imploded.

OK, one prediction: In 3 years it will be commonplace for people in West to be bartering household items on the streets.

VOLOS, Greece — The first time he bought eggs, milk and jam at an outdoor market using not euros but an informal barter currency, Theodoros Mavridis, an unemployed electrician, was thrilled.

Indeed. Like the general population, Elites can be separated into those who are descendants of liberal hunter-gather culture and those who are descendants of the conservative pharonic culture.

As the intrigue deepens, the dynamic Cyprus revelations in M.E. Synon’s Irish Daily Mail blog today -- that provide an incredible blueprint of how the Cyprus developments mirror the architecture of Communism -- are too critical to pass up.  So I want to provide just a couple more excerpts from Synon to this teaser I posted earlier:

“But above all, there is what happened over the night of the 15th on the sealed-off upper floors of the European Council building. It was the best illustration yet of why a former senior European Commission economist now refers to the EU as the New Soviet Union: the treatment of the President of Cyprus that night showed just how the power over the member states has shifted away from democratic control and into the hands of the unelected elite of a transnational European empire. And what happened to the Cypriot president that night could happen to any Taoiseach.”

Here’s more from Synon:

… Before I can explain what this Cyprus crisis means to Ireland, I have to dust off some Soviet-era vocabulary: nothing else will do.

First, nomenklatura. This was the name given to the self-propagating Communist Party elite who controlled Soviet government, industry, finance and most of the caviar.

It started on the Friday evening when Jeroen Dijsselbloem, president of the eurogroup, called an emergency meeting after the European summit. According to the (Wall Street) Journal, ‘Just after 5 p.m., finance ministers, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, ECB executive board member Jorg Asmussen and the EU’s economic-affairs commissioner, Olli Rehn, filed into a meeting room on the fifth floor of the Justus Lipsius, which houses the EU’s ministerial meetings and summits.’

Now, this is significant: ‘Cyprus’s newly elected President Nicos Anastasiades stayed behind in the country’s delegation on the seventh floor.’ The democratically-elected president was not allowed in the room as the unelected Olli Rehn began with his plans for how to get €5.8bn out of Cypriot bank depositors.

Mr Rehn wanted a straight ‘haircut’ on all deposits in all banks. But then Christine Lagarde said they must gouge between 30 percent and 40 percent from all deposits over €100,000 in the two main Cypriot banks.

The horrified Cypriot finance minister said this couldn’t happen. He began the first of several scrambles upstairs to where President Anastasiades was being kept in isolation. Of course he was. This is how an empire treats uncooperative colonial natives. In the 19th century, Belgian colonial gang-masters would lock Congolese wives alone in windowless sheds until their husbands harvested the right amount of rubber.

… I am not the only one to see that Soviet similarity [of the pressures used in Cyprus]. I go back to that former senior commission economist I mentioned at the top. He is Bernard Connolly. I have quoted before from the new edition of his book, The Rotten Heart of Europe.

Mr Connolly was infamously forced out of his job in 1995 when he wrote the book questioning the prospects of monetary union. From his vantage point as one of the nomenklatura, Mr Connolly saw the truth of the ambitions of this elite. They wanted ‘to complete the elimination of sovereignty, law and political legitimacy in Europe, freeing elites – a European nomenklatura – from any residual constraints either of democratic control or law.’

To do this, they have persuaded the ‘useful idiots’ across the member states to suppress the results of referenda and to topple democratically-elected governments ‘in manoeuvres reminiscent of Stalin’s tactics in Eastern Europe after the war.’

… It is now clear the nomenklatura intend they should be without any constraints of democratic control. Mr Connolly notes that they have transferred powers to ‘unelected, unaccountable and explicitly anti-democratic bodies.’ These include the eurogroup, the ECB, the bail-out funds, in particular the new European Stability Mechanism, ‘which, astonishingly, has complete legal immunity for itself and its officers.’

He notes the undemocratic powers of the IMF and the G20. Then there are the banking and supervisory bodies, and the economic government of the euro area which is meant to ensure economic ‘discipline.'

However communist-style it may appear, the slimeball EU elites would claim there was nothing sinister in that meeting that the Cyprus president was not invited to attend, because it was a working meeting attended by EZ FinMins (including the Cypriot FinMin) and the IMF etc to thrash out options.

And of course they'd go on to claim that the Cypriot FinMin would speak on behalf of his president and would be expected to report back the outcome to him in the usual way.

Nothing to see here...move along.

Background... from the perspective of the Jewish Daily Forward (2003) :

Kremlin Targets Jewish
Tycoons In War On Critics

By S.A. Greene
Forward Correspondent
11-2-3

LONDON - Oil titan Mikhail Khodorkovsky is not the first Jew who has risen to become Russia's richest citizen. Before him Roman Abramovich and Boris Berezovsky had their stints, while Vladimir Gusinsky got close.

In Russia, however, life at the top is not all that it's cracked up to be.

Berezovsky and Gusinsky are now in exile, facing prosecution if they ever return to Russia, while Abramovich, having cashed in much of his Russian oil and metals empire and bought a British soccer team, is a frequent guest of Berezovsky in London. As for Khodorkovsky, he's in jail.

Russian authorities arrested Khodorkovsky at gunpoint October 25 on a snowy Siberian runway. He is being held on charges ranging from tax evasion to fraud. The charges concern post-communist privatization deals for the companies that went on to become Yukos, the oil behemoth that Khodorkovsky founded and recently merged with Sibneft, another firm that he bought from Abramovich. If a court so decides, both companies could end up back in state hands. The crackdown caused a sharp drop in Russia's stock market this week and has prompted warnings that foreign investors might back away.

It's not only the economy that took a hit, though. Russian antisemites are in trouble, too. Their favorite bogeymen, the Jewish "oligarchs," as the country's tycoons are called, are becoming an endangered species.

In the eyes of most Russians, the oligarchs are clearly guilty, of theft and corruption in the best case, and probably a lot worse. That much of their wealth is ill-gotten, no one really doubts. And what is to be done? Most Russians would answer: Lock 'em up, ship 'em out. There's plenty of room in Siberia.

This, of course, is not what's happening. As Khodorkovsky sits in Moscow's most notoriously disease-ridden prison, most non-Jewish oligarchs are still riding high, even if a few are not likely to step foot in Russia again. The metals empire of Vladimir Potanin - who, along with Berezovsky, most brazenly boasted of his influence over Boris Yeltsin's Kremlin - is thriving, as are Vagit Alekperov's oil wells. The list of safe oligarchs goes on, but there are only a few Jews still on it: Mikhail Fridman of Alfa Bank, for example.

What are we to make of the fact that almost all of the major oligarchs in jail or exile are Jews, while almost all of those still in business are not? The answer is not as obvious as it may seem.

Vladimir Putin, whatever else he may be, is not an antisemite. He's too practical for that, and too regularly appears at synagogues. Indeed, there is something beyond ethnicity that joins Khodorkovsky with Berezovsky and Gusinsky: political activism. Gusinsky ran the only media company that was openly critical of Putin. Berezovsky, after a falling out with Putin, whose presidential campaign he financed, declared himself in opposition and threw money at any political party that would take it. Khodorkovsky, once he was secure in his wealth, announced he was financing two liberal parties opposed to Putin.

Still, even if the cause of their travails are their politics and not their Jewishness, their ethnic background hardly goes unnoticed.

"The Kremlin went after Khodorkovsky because he became an opponent, and as we know, the Kremlin doesn't play nicely with its opponents," Gennady Zyuganov, leader of the opposition Communist Party, said in a recent interview. "But there are a lot of other people who should be in jail. After all, what good is it to the Russian man if the wealth is simply transferred from a Berezovsky to an Abramovich?"

Zyuganov's words were carefully chosen. In the Russian language, there are two words for Russian. The one most often used in politics, rossiisky, is a civic definition, meaning any citizen of the Russian Federation. But Zyuganov used the word russky, an ethnic definition that encompasses the majority of the population, but not Berezovsky, not Abramovich and not Khodorkovsky.

Moreover, in their war on Putin's political enemies, the Kremlin and its allies have often played to the deep reservoir of anti-Jewish feeling that exists in Russian society.

One loaded phrase that has cropped up in the Khodorkovsky affairs - in the press, as well as in comments by the prosecutors - is "economic crimes." The words sound banal enough, but students of Soviet history will recall it as one of two special charges, along with Zionism, reserved especially for Jews by communist prosecutors.

It is, of course, possible that most Russians nowadays do not really remember such connotations. But Putin certainly does; after all, investigating economic crimes is something he would have been trained in back in his days at the KGB.

The Khodorkovsky affair - like those of Berezovsky and Gusinsky before him, and whoever will follow - does not represent a new wave of Russian antisemitism. It represents a very old wave, and it accompanies the revival of old modes of action that may have been buried but never died. Russia under Putin has now seen almost as many rigged elections as under Brezhnev and more repression of the press than Gorbachev or Yeltsin could ever stomach. Is it any wonder that political imprisonment would be next?

The Soviet Union, it was once declared, would be national in form, socialist in content. It was a nicer way of saying divide and conquer, a tried and tested way of ruling unruly populations. These tactics are back, and that's not good for anyone - especially not Russia's Jews.

MOSCOW — The sons of multimillionaire Telman Ismailov were two of the drivers said to have been involved in a luxury-car race in Switzerland that ended in a crash leaving an elderly German badly injured, media reported Tuesday.

Alekper and Sarkhan Ismailov were steering the $1.9 million Bugatti Veyron and the $670,000 Mercedes SLR McLaren along Lake Geneva late Thursday when a third participant crashed a Lamborghini Murcielago into a Volkswagen, Kommersant reported, citing a source in the Swiss police.

The name of the Lamborghini’s driver has not been revealed because he is the son of a high-ranking Russian government official, the report said.

The fact that his sons were linked to a high-profile act of decadence comes as the latest blow to Telman Ismailov, who lost a significant part of his Moscow business this year. http://www.sptimesrussia.com/index.php?action_id=2&story_id=30419

Got your ethnic races mixed up with your believer religions. An honest mistake.

Let me clarify,

With your believer religions every ones God represents love and caring to one another and too each other. Some believer religions have variations on that theme. Like kill anyone who doesn't believe what I taught you and assorted violent shit like that.

So as gods go some are a little fucked in the head. I guess all gods are not created equal , kinda like us?

Now race or ethnicity describes what part of the planet your species of human first inhabited . Thats why we have Italians, Greeks, Russians, Swedes, Mexicans(native), Colombians(native), and variations on the theme, etc .etc.

Now the Jew is a very old race, very old, They wrote the bible for Christ sake. They killed Christ too but thats another story. Hey just like the stories in the bible they wrote ! (old stories)the  before JC came on the scene stories.

Through history the Jewish race has been persecuted not because of their race. Come on now, NOT all Jews are bad. Just like all Mexicans, French, Chinese are NOT bad People but because of a criminal element in their race. A nasty immoral occupation of the Jewish race usually ends up destroying a hell of alot people, cities, and even countries. Now remember this is an old race. That criminal element is the BANKSTER. Now remember the Jew is not the problem but the criminal occupation.

Now it would be foolish to believe that all Banksters are Jews. There is a enough non-Jew criminal banksters to go around too! They're just as immoral, and demented. Their all hoarders just like the crazy fucks who won't throw out magazines and newspapers. These crazy fucks hoard money, they will do anything to have control over it.

Its Organized crime or a sick hording psychosis on a planetary scale at this time in earths history.

Damn wouldn't be a fucking mind fuck to come back to this planet in a thousand years to see what we have done to each other?  Did the majority finally wake up remove the criminals and that occupation from society? After a thousand years time have we finally learned to live together? Eventually live and trade without paying a third party for doing actually nothing?

If history is any guide no fucking way. Ain't happening!!

Did the gangsters have a small gang war and only kill off a million or 2 or 3 in some far off shit hole? They have been kinda doing this on a continuous basis pretty much since the end of ww2

Did they really get greedy and start a world war 3 and  kill of 1 billion or 2? Chances of this happening looking better every day!

What would the planet look like if one of those three scenarios played out after a thousand years?

Damn, Lifes too short.

Like my dick!

Here’s the speel from RT:

“Some time ago, maybe a couple of months ago, Berezovsky addressed Putin in a letter, written by him personally, in which he admitted he made a lot of mistakes and was asking for forgiveness and to help him to return to the motherland,” Peskov told Russia 24 channel.

Berezovsky left Russia in the late 1990s over a money laundering scandal with Aeroflot airlines.

He has been on Russia’s wanted list since 2001 on charges of fraud, money-laundering and attempted violent power takeover.

In 2007, a Moscow court found him guilty in absentia of stealing 215 billion rubles from the company and sentenced him to six years behind bars.

The tycoon was given a total of 19 years in prison by a number of Russian courts over various charges. He claimed the cases against him were provoked by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In 2003, the UK granted Berezovsky political asylum.

And, as if that weren’t enough, this two months ago from Russia Today (the incredibly informative site mentioned by Grimbert above):

Berezovsky court saga: Oligarch sued by ex-lover demanding millions

January 24, 2013

Berezovsky faces just another lawsuit - his ex-lover demands almost US$8 million compensation. The UK court ordered to freeze oligarch’s assets, worth millions, in order to make the payment if he loses the case.

Elena Gorbunova, Berezovsky`s partner of 20 years and the mother of two of his children, who broke up with the tycoon last year, claims he owes her one fifth of the money he received after selling his home in Surrey. The house was estimated at 25 million pounds (some $40 million). She also says her ex-partner is trying to sell two properties in the South of France which he promised to her.

Gorbunova, who is in her early 40s, filed the case in 2012, but it was held privately up until now when the press urged the judge to make the hearings public.

According to the ruling made by Judge George Mann on January 18 and released on Wednesday, Gorbunova won an asset-freeze of Berezovsky`s luxury properties in France. The initial figure was 200 million pounds, but it was reported that the judge reduced the sum.

“On the evidence, Mr. Berezovsky is a man under financial pressure. It is likely he will feel a more pressing need to satisfy creditors than satisfy Ms. Gorbunova,” Judge Mann said, adding that she is "fearful that she will not receive the proceeds of any such sale because Mr. Berezovsky needs the money for himself.”

Gorbunova is not the first woman seeking a substantial compensation for her years with the notorious Russian tycoon.

In 2011, his ex-wife Galina Besharova received what became the biggest divorce settlement in the UK – some 100 million pounds (over $150 million).

The Russian runaway oligarch`s fortune has significantly decreased in recent years due to the number of scandalous court cases that saw him paying millions of dollars in compensation and  legal expenses.

The latter in the series was his court battle with another Russian oligarch and the owner of Chelsea football club, Roman Abramovich. Berezovsky accused Abramovich of using his ties with the Kremlin to make him sell Sibneft, a profitable oil company, at a low price in the 1990s.

Berezovsky lost the case in August 2012 and was left with paying bill for legal expenses reportedly reaching 40 million pounds (approximately over $63 million).

His lawyers also report that Berezovsky has cumulative debt around 200 million pounds (over $300 million).

As of 2012, Forbes estimated Berezovsky’s fortune at $700 million. However, the account may have included some assets the oligarch is no longer in procession of.

1996:Two Moscow newspapers reported last week that Jewish business tycoon Boris Berezovsky received Israeli citizenship during a visit to the Jewish state three years ago.

2011 His yacht siezed: Berezovsky, who was granted political asylum by the British authorities in 2000, said he viewed the statement by the Russian Prosecutor General's Office in the context of Thursday's resolution by the European Parliament.

2012 - Nov: A Russian businessman helping Swiss prosecutors uncover a powerful fraud syndicate has died in unexplained circumstances near his mansion in Britain, in a chilling twist to a Russian mafia scandal that has strained Moscow's ties with the West. He is now the fourth person linked to the Magnitsky case to have died in strange circumstances.

Robert Maxwell: Mossad murdered Robert Maxwell; The ties between Maxwell and the Mossad went back a long way. Elements within the Mossad had offered to finance Maxwell's first big business ventures, and in later years Maxwell received inside information on global matters from the Office. Maxwell was originally codenamed "the Little Czech," and the sobriquet stuck. Only a handful of people in the Israeli intelligence community knew who the Little Czech was, yet he provided an unending supply of slush money for the organization whenever it ran low.But the Mossad had used its ace in the hole one time too many. Asking Maxwell to get involved in a matter of secondary importance (namely, the Vanunu affair) had been a big mistake, for which the media mogul would be made to pay the price. That involvement caused suspicion in the British Parliament that there was no smoke without fire, particularly after the publication of a book by an American reporter claiming Maxwll was a Mossad agent. Maxwell retaliated in a lawsuit, but the ground was starting to burn under his feet. The Mossad was late in giving him back his money, and the usual....

Protester Heckles Obama over Israeli Killings, Rachel Corrie Death

President Obama gave a key address to Israeli students in Jerusalem on Thursday, where he was interrupted by a heckler. The protester was an Arab-Israeli student named Rabiyah Aid. He told the Israeli newspaper Ynet he had called out to Obama: “Have you really come to promote the peace process or to provide Israel with more weapons to kill the Palestinian people? On your way here did you see the [West Bank] fence or the killer of Rachel Corrie?” Rachel Corrie was the U.S. student crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer in Gaza on March 16, 2003, while attempting to block the demolition of a Palestinian home.
