Santelli Stunned: It's Better To Be On Disability Than Work Minimum Wage

Tyler Durden's picture

The sad truth in the USA, as we explained in great detail here, incentives to 'work' are increasingly non-existent. Thanks to a never-ending stream of benefits from the great and powerful Oz, as CNBC's Rick Santelli notes, Disability payments (of which there are 14 million people covered in the US - none of which count towards the unemployment rate) pay around $13,000 per year (versus $15,000 for minimum wage work). However, Santelli exclaims, the people on disability get healthcare; and this program costs the US $300 billion per year. Is it any wonder that only 1% of those who were on disability in Q1 2011 have left? Santelli comments, "I'm not saying there aren't people that are on disability that shouldn't be, but much of it is illnesses like back pain... it's a judgment call," adding that, "without incentives, large issues go ...totally unfixed."

I'm not making this up....

Two weeks ago I was seeing an alcoholic patient in the ER after he had a seizure.  He was withdrawing from alcohol after he ran out.  He was still out of it because of the seizure so I was asking his daughter if he had any medical problems.  She said "no, he doesn't have any medical problems, but he's been working hard to get disability."

I am sick & fucking tired of seeing patients on disability who are anything but disabiled.  Most of the time I'll ask patients what kind of work they do knowing that they probably don't work.  When they tell me they are disabiled I then ask what actually keeps them from working.  Oftentimes I'll get blank stares.  They can't even articulate why they supposedly can't work. My rough guess is that only 25% of people on disability are truly disabled.

I have had it with this disability argument. Every conversation you hear regarding this topic centered around the amount of people on disability this year versus last year and on and on and on. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE ever makes the connection to DISABLED VETERANS! Which I happen to be. No one ever considers to make the connection of rising disabled numbers with the amount of our wounded soldiers returning home with their entire lives and future destroyed. I am sick of it! We Veterans are constantly lumped in with the low life tit sucker who would rather sit on their ass then provide for their families and please go ahead and spout your fucking mouths off about how we get free medical care! Have any of you ever been to a VA Hospital? I would bet that is a fat NO.  it is one of the if not the worst medical care organizations in the world! 6-8 months for an appointment, a panel review board of worthless bureaucrats denying a much needed implant or life saving operation. Thanks Uncle Sam and FUCK YOU ALL with your clouded site to see what is really the truth regarding this issue.

I hear you.

I was stationed in Germany back in 1998, and we had a no-drill load upp in the motor pool, with all vehicles fully armed, loaded with ammo, fueled and locked and loaded for BigBear.

I was at 8th ID HQ at Bad Kreuznach, and housed in old German WW2 barracks. The stone steps were worn down and smooth, a regular OSHA shit-fit in the making and Iw as carrying the base to our tracks 50 cal when I slipped on those godamned steps and hurt my back landing on the edge of a step hitting my spine just below the shoulder blades. I have had pain for years, off and on, mostly mild but sometimes it got real bad from muscle tension. Got all kinds of physical therapy, most of which seemed ineffectual till a nurse asked me if I had tried getting drunk. That seemed to kill the pain and relax the muscles just fine.

But I  have never missed any work till the 2001 IT sector post Y2K buble hit, and I lost a total of about 9 months employment till 2004 as jobs had truly gotten rare. Still I  have worked all kinds of jobs and Ihave never let my back pain be an excuse.

Lately though, the pain has gotten different, more sharp and not muscle related. The doctors are trying to figure out whats wrong and I am getting the X-rays and so forth, but it is very plausible I might end up on disability sometime in the next few years. As much as the pain has sharpened, I feel pesimistic I will reach 62 for early retirement.

But all these free loaders are destroying the reputation of those on disability, when most people are not frauds. Alot of these disabilities are related to the recent wars, and most of the remaining are legit. I know it must be hard for a bunch of Wall Street rats to imagine it, but the vast majority of people want to work and do not want to fall back to minimal levels of income. They want to feel useful and productive and not like a bunch of leeches on their families and society in general.

IF there is a problem with disability abuse then fix the damned thing, but dont throw the baby out with the fucking bathwater.

Your day is coming, doc, and I'm gonna laugh my ass off when it does. When Medicaid, medicare, disability, and social security go the way of the Dodo you'll be trying to get on disability or some other sort of assistance yourself because most of you over priced quacks will be out of work due to lack of demand.

Don't show up here screaming for a taxpayer bailout when the health care industry goes tits up. I bet you guys will be just like the banksters when the SHTF, crying like a bunch of titty babies. You will not get any sympathy or mercy from me, doc, you'll get what you have been dishing out. Get with the program dumbfuck.  I'm the first to say our current healthcare system will soon come crumbling down.  Prices are out of control, but it's not the average physician's salary that's the problem.  My services will be in demand across the planet as long as there are sick people who want help.  I could get paid with chicken eggs for all I care.  I've worked my ass to the bone for 20+ years doing some of the most stressful work there is.  I'm quite content with knowing that few people in this world have worked harder than me, and my intentions have been pure.  I came from a poor family, and worked my way through college by working at a meat packing plant.  Oh by the way, I live in a $150k house.  Yes, I'm living the dream.

This a typical Santelli rant, he cries about some folks who are scamming the disability system, typical corporatist propaganda BS and as long as dumbfucks like you keep slurping it up things will never get better.

Let's say half are scamming the system, using his numbers that means it's costing me and you $91 billion. Are you really stupid enough to think that is going to break us when trillions in corporate welfare and tax dodges for the rich won't?

This is the proverbial straining a gnat and swallowing a camel. All this talk about reducing the social safety net is BS propaganda to stir the morons up to make the poor, sick ,and old pay for the $23 trillion in corporate bailouts.

So, which are you? One who lies to stir up the morons or a moron?

Well he does have a point.

Corporate welfare is much bigger than Social SEcurity, Medicade or Medicare but its funding is 'invisible' since it comes in the form of taxes not paid and is not seen on a Federal budget pie chart.

That doesnt mean it isnt far larger than the welfare costs.

In 1990 estimates of corporate welfare in the form of tarrif bariers, tax loopholes, tax, tax breaks, anti-competition protection, etc was conservatively estimated to be about $170 billion.

From Wikipedia:"In 1990 the federal government spent 4.7 billion dollars on all forms of international aid. Pollution control programs received 4.8 billion dollars of federal assistance while both secondary and elementary education were allotted only 8.4 billion dollars. More to the point, while more than 170 billion dollars is expended on assorted varieties of corporate welfare the federal government spends 11 billion dollars on Aid for Dependent Children. The most expensive means tested welfare program, Medicaid, costs the federal government 30 billion dollars a year or about half of the amount corporations receive each year through assorted tax breaks. S.S.I., the federal program for the disabled, receives 13 billion dollars while American businesses are given 17 billion in direct federal aid."

Even the Cato institute estimates at least $97 billion. And how do you caclulate all the little hidden gains like locking out foreign business from selling far better products in the US while the corporations can bring in as much black market labor and H1-Bs as they can possibly manage to grab? That alone is multiple times higher than direct mesurable corporate welfare.

And would the bank bailouts count too? What is the value of having the federal government play 100% backstop to the TBTF corporations guaranteeing that they remain in business at some level, the law, creditors and stock holders be damned?

The welfare queens aint got nothin on Wall Street and GM.

Here's a rebuttle Paul.  Do you really think that all 14 million of those people on disability are actually really deserving of it because they are truly disabled?  Or are some of them "faking" it?  I've never heard you talk about cleaning up government "waste", and in a budget thats over 3.8 trillion dollars, don't you think there are several hundred BILLION dollars in waste?  No one ever wants to address that issue.  You just think its OK, because some federal turd counter is getting a check, and they will contribute to the "economy" even though they haven't created anything of value whatsoever.

It seems the more we spend, the faster we swirl the drain.  When the Shit hits the fan, I know what you will say from your grave...."we didn't spend enough!!"  How much is ENOUGH Paul??

Here's some disability fun facts!

1. Guy got on SSDI w/2 years back pay.

6 mos. later bought a Harley. SS checked DMV and saw that and took away his SSDI reasoning if you can ride/control a Harley you are'nt disabled. They also made him pay back ALL recieved benifits.

2. You can earn 1 K a month and still get SSDI.

3. SS will let you start a bussiness w/ your SSDI AND give you SSI + medicaid +foodstamps as long as you really try to make it work. You're required to do a plan and report monthly.

4. For every 85 recipients of SSDI 105 die from their illnesses.

Hmmm, sounds like my neighbor. He's in his early 40s, lives in a $490K house with his wife and a couple of kids and in-laws. Rides a Harley every single day, I see him leaving but I have no idea where he goes. He's been on SSDI for years, long before I lived here (I've been here three years). He laughs at Americans (he's Mexican, btw) and drinks beer and does nothing all day. I wonder if he could be reported to SS like the person you mention, would they investigate and maybe take away his bennies? He certainly isn't even remotely disabled, he works out in his yard doing different things (last week he put together a playset for his kids in the back yard). He works on his newer pickup truck all the time, and from all outward appearances, doesn't have a care in the world.

Another guy I know, leftover hippie from the 70s, was a security guard for a few years until he was "injured" on the job. He even tells me he's scamming the system, claims he hurt his back. I saw him, while in public (at a Costco) lifting up his 5 yr old daughter and tossing her up in the air, certainly not something that you could do with a bad back. He's not even worried that someone could see him and know he isn't injured at all, in any way, shape or form. He even told me when I asked him if he was going back to work anytime "Oh, no, I'm never working again!"

And these are just two people I happen to know. Imagine how many thousands, or millions are out there scamming the system and taking us all for suckers. I feel like a chump for working. Anyone know how to report someone for SS fraud? Would they even care? Somehow I think I'd be ignored if I did try to do something about it.

Your anecdotes are not surprising at all.  I work in a large hospital, and see individuals frequently that are either trying to get disability, or currently on it.  The most common is depression, or back pain.  I recently had a 30 something female who's friend called the ambulance after she stopped breathing.  It turns out, she was supplementing her prescribed narcotics with heroin.  She was very candid about her legal and illegal drug use.  The blame in her mind was put on the physicians for prescribing her narcotics.  It didn't seem to occur to her that she was responsible for her addiction.  Her situation and attitude are not rare.  How many are there like her? Who knows.  Disability is legitimate for some, and a form of early retirement for many.  I've noticed that I haven't come across someone who is educated, once held a job that payed well, etc. and is now on disability.  I'm sure some exist, but the people I see had low paying, generally shitty jobs.  This has become the giveaway nation, with no signs of slowing down.

I can't help but be nauseated at it, still, knowing they're getting away with ripping off the system and no one gives a damn about it. Like you said, this is an early retirement system for the lower class, and just like SNAP, a way of controlling the masses. Once on the gov dole, there's no incentive to get off and the gov calls the shots for these sheeple. I can't wait for the day they get "shorn".

+1000 on the "giveaway nation" remark. I can't imagine what's going to happen when, one day, all the freebies stop coming. All I know, I don't want to be around here when it happens (I'm in the LA area). I'll be selling this overpriced POS house and get out of Dodge before too much longer.

Hi Paul,

Says a front man for the debt money system that is more responsible for poverty than any other factor.

Most women go on welfare because of the debt money system for which you run "interference."

If I lend you $20 at 5% interest, you owe me $21 in 12 months.  I have the $1 that you need to pay me back or you go bankrupt.

I can bankrupt you anytime I want.  I have the power, not you.  The wealthier I am, the more unpayable debt you have.

Who are you?  Government and the people you claim to support.

Who am I?  The sociopathic private international banking cartel and, ultimately, YOUR EMPLOYER!

Keep up "God's work" there, Paul, but make sure you test those "fruits" from time to time.

"If all the bank loans were paid, no one could have a bank deposit, and there would not be a dollar of coin or currency in circulation. This is a staggering thought. We are completely dependent on the commercial Banks. Someone has to borrow every dollar we have in
circulation, cash or credit. If the Banks create ample synthetic money we are prosperous; if not, we starve. We are absolutely without a permanent money system. When one gets a complete grasp of the picture, the tragic absurdity of our hopeless position is almost incredible, but there it is. It is the most important subject intelligent persons can investigate and reflect upon. It is so important that our present civilization may collapse unless it becomes widely understood and the defects remedied very soon."

Oh, and the local transit organizations in large cities (sponsored by all the smaller cities in the country) give this class of individuals free rides...on vehicles with ramps and lifts and all the other amenities they 'deserve'.

We have exactly the same issue in the UK.

It started under Margaret Thatcher when they closed nationalised steel mills and mines. The unemployed men were all encouraged to 'go on the sick'. It was a deal to get men off the unemployment register. Most of them never worked again and most had a 'bad back'.

I have looked closely at the various disability and sickness benefits in the UK and it really is the case that you are far far better off being on them than working minimum wage. For an unskilled worker it is a no brainer. You are considered lucky in some areas of the UK if you can wangle your way onto 'the sick'. People envy you being on 'the sick' far more than if you get a job.

There are efforts being made to stop the abuses and of course some people really do need the help but the numbers on these benefits have rocketed as a percentage of the population.

It's just yet one more piece of solid evidence (in the massive stack) illustrating how depressed the economy is when 14 million men and women of working age (many of whom are young, by the way) -- which is nearly 1 working aged person for every 10 that are reported to be employed in any capacity - literally resign themselves to subsistence compensation in exchange for essentially declaring themselves permanently unemployed (i.e. they'll likely never have a career).

Take a look at the working age population versus the % of that population that's gainfully employed.  The very low U.S. labor participation rate is yet just another piece of evidence illustrating how depressed the economy has become; add in people on disability insurance, those who have taken their social security early despite incurring penalties for doing so, and then the tens of millions of others who may or may not be working even part time, and who receive federal or state financial assistance to buy food (nearly 50 million U.S. citizens on SNAP/EBT) pay for utility bills, etc., and only then does the true portrait of how bad things are take shape.

I see formerly very sheeple-like people who now tell me that they literally can't stomach watching the surreality that is the "cable or television news" because of the blatant lies spouted off with such regularity by the sock puppets.

What really surprises me is none of the above, though; what really surprises me is that there are people like Bill McBride of Calculated Risk who apparently are viewed with credibility by some, even as they literally have morphed into a 365/24/7 "Green Shoot" hardcore meme pushing machine.

How did he calculate the income from a minimum wage job?  Let me guess: he multiplied the minimum wage by 2000.  This is ignoring the benefits of the EIC.  Also people working minimum wage qualify for medicare, so they have access to health care also.  Unless you factor those items in you're not going to come up with the right comparison.  Obviously it's easier to be paid not to work, but the comparison here is oversimplified.

I hope you see the difference and do the cost/benefit analysis.  Plus you have to assume that a job also costs both time and money coming and going, not to mention hazards and having to prepare yourself such as going to bed at a reasonable hour to get at least some sleep and showering, getting dressed, eating, etc.

Have a brother who's mentally ill - not really all that bad and readily treatable with meds.   He's spent his whole life doing only what he WANTED to do.  Worked a minimum wage job two blocks away from home,  My parents kept their old house so he had a place to live (he got a a condo when they died and the house was finally sold).  Parents paid his bills.  He collected gold and silver coins while I and our other brother were working our asses off to get established.  Work got tired of his tantrums - never expected him to stay nore than a couple years - and finally let him go.  He's now collecting disability (on top of the money he got throughout his life and the couple hundred thousand he got when our parents died.  Biggest waste of oxygen on the planet.    But he got away with it.  'I'm ill.....'   even though he refused any treatment.     FIrst thing he did after the estate was settled was buy a new convertible.     I doubt that's going to make him any more attractive to the opposite sex.....

And no, he's not crazy.  He's quite accomplished at getting what he wants from others, manipulating others and managing to do as little as possible in his life.  I expect he'll be long dead before anyone notices and the little he has will be stolen by those who show up to remove the body.  Nobody left willing to put up with his antics, nobody left who caes one whit about him.   He got the life he wanted - though I don't see how anyone would want that life.

I don't blame people for going on disability.  They didn't ship the low-skilled, half-ass decent-paying jobs overseas.  And they're not responsible for rampant inflation in food and energy costs.  And they are surely not responsible for healthcare costs shooting through the roof.

In many situations going on disability, which can automatically qualify a person for food stamps and healthcare, is a no-brainer for survival.  That's what we're talking about here, the lower end of the food chain (as in Humans) just trying to survive. Sure a few of these people are gaming the system, but I see people on the street everyday who sure as hell aren't living the "high life".

y'know, if you think about it honestly, what you describe,

Sure a few of these people are gaming the system

is really just the American Way. . .

The American way of life is an expression that refers to the lifestyle of people living in the United States of America. It is an example of a behavioral modality, developed from the 17th century until today. It refers to a nationalist ethos that purports to adhere to principles of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." It has some connection to the concept of American exceptionalism and the American Dream.

tell me these peoples are not pursuing their life, liberty and happiness in the only niche left to them, .gov payouts.  how many people are drawing monthly .gov paychecks as well, including not a few who post here?

Not sure if he's a working guy if he's on disability.  I agree that the players you named are the biggest problem, but a bunch of small time cheaters adds up and if they are not truly disabled, then they too are stealing from the honest taxpayers.  Cheaters from top to bottom need to be cleansed from the system and prosecuted, with penalties reflecting the amount stolen.

Speaking of people who collect checks instead of working... I swear the shoppers at WalMart Supercenters are fatter than the shoppers at regular WalMarts.

No one is accounting for the number of off the book employees that are on disability.  There are a lot of them out there doing on jobs, mowing grass, working on cars, etc.  I've known a few.

It is better not to have any savings or house when you retire in the UK if you have to go into care because they will take it from you to pay for the care. If you have nothing, they pay for the care.

They reward the spendthrift saver by taking their money, the one who lived it up and spend spend spend what little they had was rewarded
