Santelli Stunned: It's Better To Be On Disability Than Work Minimum Wage

Tyler Durden's picture

The sad truth in the USA, as we explained in great detail here, incentives to 'work' are increasingly non-existent. Thanks to a never-ending stream of benefits from the great and powerful Oz, as CNBC's Rick Santelli notes, Disability payments (of which there are 14 million people covered in the US - none of which count towards the unemployment rate) pay around $13,000 per year (versus $15,000 for minimum wage work). However, Santelli exclaims, the people on disability get healthcare; and this program costs the US $300 billion per year. Is it any wonder that only 1% of those who were on disability in Q1 2011 have left? Santelli comments, "I'm not saying there aren't people that are on disability that shouldn't be, but much of it is illnesses like back pain... it's a judgment call," adding that, "without incentives, large issues go ...totally unfixed."

the math is bullshit...no one gets 40hrs a week/$15k a year. you get 23hrs max and make $7500. most min wage jobs are thru 'agencies' so you arent a full time employee and you also dont get benefits. funny...people making millions commenting on how the minwage worker exists....

This problem started a long time ago because any Federal Benefits have been subject to some sort of COLA whereas private wages - HAHAHAHAHAaa - not so much. Disparity? Compound interest? Over a couple decades, the word gets out. Probably mostly through bitching - "My disability/social security/whatever check "only" went up by ____ this year!"

I'm actually perfectly fine with the freeloaders at the bottom. I just can't stand the ones at the top; JPM, BAC, CITI, GS and FRBNY.

It's nice to see a comment that doesn't pound the poor of this nation further into the ground.  There are some people that need help. I know most of you don't like this fact because you somehow feel everyone should be working so you don't have to be charitable.. The fact is, there are people collecting disability because THEY ARE FUCKING DISABLED!!  If you're not disable, be thankful for that instead of being a dick about it.  I know, I know.. some people are collecting that are able to work.. Jesus fucking Christ.. I know..

I don't mind freeloaders who're living in flophouse apartments in the ghetto and surviving off of mediocre food, it's the ones driving around in Escaplades/Yukons/Denalis with spinner rims and sound systems who bother me.

I don't mind freeloaders who look around at their empires of chain-linked fence homes with garbage strewn lawn they double up on to make the fed/state dollars stretch just a little bit farther....it's the ones wearing $300 Nikes and who have a pack-a-day and a 750ml of their chosen drink habit a day who bother me.

A better question: Is the business community really to blame?

If your business relies on paying piss poor wages to give you a bottom line, you don't really have a business. If you're a large corporation that pays piss poor wages just so the execs and shareholders can make a killing, you're the ones killing the incentive to work.

Slave labour and sweat shop economics are never going to endow anyone at the bottom of the pile with a feelgood attitude towards work.

In a society where education, welfare, free school food for kids and foodstamps abound it is the same business people who cover this hidden cost of doing business while matching the withholding taxes for the same shitbags you make excuses for. Work harder and better yourself with pride to rise above the other lazy shitbags. Quit your fucked up thinking you lazy pathetic democrat bastard!

Contributing to the problem, as it always does, is the Federal govt's various mandates, minimums and quotas that set the break-even point on each marginal employee far too high.  hiring considerations nowadays go well beyond net salary/wage (including the hurdle rate deemed legal by the minimum wage laws) but also include payroll taxes and benefits.  But t he benefits have an overhead all of their own, just to maintain the army of paper-pushing compliance specialists that serve absolutely no purpose but to leach off of real value creators.

More than that, minimum wage laws also prevent entry-level employees from entering the workforce and acquiring experience and hopefully skills they can use to contribute more and therefore earn more.

Then there's the whole exporting of the USA's wealth, most fundamentally via the dollar destruction, that has cause capital to exit stage right.  The concept of an entry-level job today vs. 25 years ago is so enormous because manufacturing up and left.

Govt has really made the choice easy for people on disability, given govt has fucked up the economy beyond all repair.

I heard this actual story on NPR Saturday. It lasted an hour and was, for NPR, quite refreshing.

The main points were that people are looking disability as a legitimate way to survive in this economy.

Doctors are recommending disability en mass to older 55+ people who have been laid off.

Then a manufacturing/factory closes, a huge chunk of the older men get directed to disability through the jobs retraining program.

There is a whole swath of people who have back problems. They probably do have a legitimate problem if they were to continue doing heavy, hard work. The training and education is not there for 'office jobs" One lady was asked here ideal job and she replied the admissions officer at the claims center as it was the first job she had seen that could be done sitting down. Small towns don't have many office jobs.

The State of Missouri is hiring a company to comb through the Medicare rolls (state funded) to be put on the disability roll ( fed funded) they have a 75% success rate and every time a person leaves, the company gets $2,200.

Most importantly, once off disability, you literally drop off the workforce data calculations.Meaning unemployment is closer to shadow stats then the Fed govt. wished to acknowledge.

Mine is the condensed version with kids interrupting, for the whole piece visit http://www.thisamericanlife.org/

The system is going to crash, I'm 32 and looking onto getting off of SS for religious reasons.

Almost forgot the lawyers. They are making even more than a killing than normal. About 1 in 4 disability claims is accepted the first try. What the lawyers are now doing is resubmitting the 3 that didn't pass, they get a percentage of the "back pay" from the date of the first try. The floodgates have opened at the Fed and now about 60% are accepted second time. Easy $ for lawyers = more people on disability. We are rewarding the wrong people for the wrong thing.

First let me qualify all of the below with the following:

I can't fault any average mirror-fogger for trying to get a nickel.  13K / year is a whole lot less than $85 Billion / Month.  Because I am familiar with scientific notation, I know which numbers actually matter.  That said:

Can I get some data on the number of backpain disability recipients who are also obese?

Why, after we've raided everything, heck, how hard can it be to be "on our own".  [evil, prolonged laughter].

from an article dated Jan. 2012, The Food Stamp Fallacy,

The truth? Of the 46 million people living in poverty in America in 2010, the U.S. census revealed that 31 million were white. Ten million were black. Of the 49 million people without health insurance coverage, 37 million were white; 8 million were African American. Latinos of every race and Asian Americans represented the remaining largest ethnic groups.

The face of poverty in America is overwhelmingly white, but as sociologist and professor William O'Hare explains in a 2009 study on children in poverty, the white American poor, especially those in rural areas, are "forgotten."

White Americans, poor and middle-class alike, receive the vast majority of tax-funded government assistance programs, from monthly assistance to Social Security to food stamps.

In December 2009, the New York Times published a series of related articles showing that poor whites across Appalachia and the Mississippi Delta and through the Midwest, Deep South and Texas borderlands were the highest percentage of Americans relying on the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), or food stamp, program.

Currently, over 5.3 million people in the United States are denied the right to vote because of felony disenfranchisement

AnAbsurdity:

How are they forgotten if they receive the vast majority of tax funded government assistance programs?

Ummm ... because they don't.

The biggest recipients of tax funded government assistance programs are the TBTF banks in the US, Europe, and Japan, the Wall Street "bank holding company" syndicate/mob, and other financial corporate stewards of the Potomac Swamp like General Electric, whose legal division (as in Panzer division) writes the nation's tax code.

Another 'american' truism...

When do propagandists realize that their tricks are getting older by the days? Substituting an invented point for a real one as the ground of 'discussion' is a favorite of this guy.

With so many unemployed or underemployed people competing for the few jobs left, disabled people are at a great disadvantage. Of course the number of disabled people on benefits has increased, they go to the back of the jobs queue when times are hard.

Work isn't just about the pay, it brings social benefits, learning opportunities and a degree of self-respect among other things. Living on disability benefits reduces quality of life for many, increasing depression and isolation. It traps people in a low standard of living.

I know some young adults who are deaf and have learning difficulties, some of whom have found work with a lot of support from their care workers, but in this economic climate I wonder how long they can keep their jobs.

I'd prefer that most were gainfully employed, getting paid to make a living wage.  Failing that, I'd prefer they had paid enough into UI to get them by till they are employed.

Failing that, I'd prefer having them on welfare, as opposed to being in the streets or in jail.  In terms of pure net cost, it's cheaper to keep them in some 'residence' and with own TV, than trying to steal mine or paying 3-5x by keeping them in jail.

And higher education (at affordable prices, i.e., per global rates, not hyper-inflated US rates) is a fine way keep youth off the streets and out of employment lines. If it were up to me, I'd make them all do mandatory military training -- like in Switzerland and Israel.

Might even consider work brigades to have welfare cases or long-term unemployed earn their money and keep some self esteem.  Spare me the liberal, left-wing wailing.
