Cyprus President's Family Transferred Tens Of Millions To London Days Before Deposit Haircuts

Tyler Durden's picture

A day after former Cypriot President Vassilou was found to be among many elite Cypriot (politicians and businessmen) who had loans written-off by the major (now insolvent) banks; it appears the rot is far fouler than expected. In a somewhat stunning (or purely coincidental) revelation, ENETEnglish reports that Cypriot newspaper Haravgi claims that current President Nicos Anastasiades' family businesses transferred 'dozens of millions' from their Laiki Bank accounts to London just a week before the devastating depositor haircuts were unleashed upon his people. Of course, the denials are loud and Anastasiades has demanded an investigation into the claims; we are sure the government-selected 'independent' committee will be as thorough as the Libor anti-trust investigators. As a reminder, as we noted yesterday, here are Cyprus' gun control laws.

Via EnetEnglish,

A company owned by in-laws of Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades withdrew dozens of millions from Laiki Bank on March 12 and 13, according to an article published in Cypriot newspaper Haravgi.

The newspaper, which is affiliated to the communist-rooted AKEL party, reports that three days before the Eurogroup meeting the company took five promissory notes worth €21m from Laiki Bank and transferred the money to London.

Responding to the allegations, Anastasiades said: “The attempt to defame companies or people linked to my family… is nothing but an attempt to distract people from the liability of those who led the country to a state of bankruptcy.”

The president added that no one, including himself, will be exempt from the ongoing investigations looking into responsibilities over the near collapse of the economy.

Anastasiades added that when the investigative committee convenes on Tuesday, he will request that its members look into this particular case with the same attentiveness as all other cases.

The company in question has firmly denied the reports.

Last Friday a list of companies and politicians that had loans written off by banks at the heart of Cyprus' bailout crisis was published in Greece and was subsequently handed to the Cypriot parliament's ethics committee. The list includes the names of politicians from Cyprus' biggest parties (excluding the socialist EDEK and the Greens).

You guys tell me that Nicos isn't friends with Israel? Even Jew wikipedia can't hide this mug.

Goyim are fools, and will continue on as sheep as long as the Jew World Order has any use for them at all.  Now, get back to work!

Anastasiades, a center-right candidate who defeated a left-wing contender, is considered “very friendly” toward Israel and made a rare visit here in January 2012 as head of the opposition.

One government officials aid that it was unusual in Cypriot politics for opposition leaders to travel abroad.

Following that visit, Anastasiades was quoted on a blog called the Hellenic Antidote as telling Cypriot radio that the cooperation that will develop between Israel and Cyprus in the exploitation of hydrocarbon deposits in the exclusive economic zones will lead to enhanced cooperation in other fields as well, including tourism, research and commerce.

Anastasiades, according to Israeli officials, backed the boom in Israeli- Cypriot ties that came under the watch of his predecessor, Dimitris Christofias, a communist who in 2011 paid the first visit to Israel by a Cypriot president in over a decade.

And if you had been the Cypriot President, what would you all have done? He did the only rational thing that he could have, despite his corruption. of course, there might be some average Joe citizen in Cyprus somewhere that will like to hang the bastard in the city square!

Transparency is the real enemy of the system. The more we have the more freedom will ensue. It will be a long time before Assange is allowed out of his golden jail in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

Mind you, now that it's in the open they will be punished. At least 5% of the funds will be taxed. Maybe even 10% if there is an outcry...

The Cypriot legal system should allow for trial based on using "insider information" for personal gain, and penalties of the highest proportionate order meted out to this family.

I suspect Nicos Anastasiades and his entire family will be relocating to London sometime in the near future. The only question is whether he will complete his term of office first, or just silently disappear in the middle of the night before his term is up.

What, exactly, is he accused of doing that's so heinous?  Maybe he told his family that the government and the banks were both hopelessly insolvent and the Troika wasn't going to bail them out.  To get their money out of this shithole and put it somewhere where they have their own currency and a Central Bank that will print money to prop up its government and banks.

That wasn't exactly "insider information"; I knew it by reading Zerohedge.

He was saying one thing publicly (as was the central bank of Cyprus) and in private he was saying another. That is what is so heinous.

Everyone on ZH jokes about the idiots who think of nothing else but watching DWTS, NFL, NASCAR, etc. In reality, it's the people on this site that continually participate in this bankster ponzi who pretend to be "awake" that help drive the scam even further. My guess would be that these people are fearful their so-called "markets" will actually collapse and leave them with nothing. And they are also the types that have no skills other than day trading. If the world as we know it changed suddenly, the yappers on this site who have no skills will be the first to truly suffer.

I was sucked in and played by bankster & stock market rules once... and lost my ass back in the 90's. It took several years before I woke up and realized those rules and lifestyle are a fucking illusion. To paraphrase George Carlin, "I was not in the elite group".

It took me a long time to disconnect from the bankster mindset. Once done, I started seeing people and their daily lives as if I was viewing zoo animals. I started seeing the cages around them. And their jailers were always a bankster.

Perhaps Tyler should start a new site: Zoo-roHedge for those still active in the bankerster ponzi stock market or still have their savings in a bank.

Shorn of all the foreign-sounding names and acronyms, these allegations if true lay out a simple case of insider trading, whereby members of the Cypriot President's family acted on knowledge not readily available to the general Cypriot public. I'm surprised there are no calls now for a criminal inquiry into this insider trading.
