People Not In Labor Force Soar By 663,000 To 90 Million, Labor Force Participation Rate At 1979 Levels

Tyler Durden's picture

Things just keep getting worse for the American worker, and by implication US economy, where as we have shown many times before, it pays just as well to sit back and collect disability and various welfare and entitlement checks, than to work .The best manifestation of this: the number of people not in the labor force which in March soared by a massive 663,000 to a record 90 million Americans who are no longer even looking for work. This was the biggest monthly increase in people dropping out of the labor force since January 2012, when the BLS did its census recast of the labor numbers. And even worse, the labor force participation rate plunged from an already abysmal 63.5% to 63.3% - the lowest since 1979! But at least it helped with the now painfully grotesque propaganda that the US unemployment rate is "improving."

Who needs to work when there is plenty of "free" money, especially when they are invested in a bubble/speculative expensonomy.

A friendly reminder: Enjoy it as long as it last, for it will be short lived.

Ahhhh! 1979. Good memories...worn out toughskins, hand-me-downs, no money in my pocket, hamburger helper on the table, Another Brick in the Wall on the radio, not a care in the world, and no job. Good times are coming back around. I was 11, but the no job and not a care in the world part is reserved for those "disabled" Americans living the life.

And after months of covering happily on a prozac high for their dear leader, the apparatchik presstitutes suddenly take a turn...writing as though they just found out about the state of the union. And of course, they HAD TO say it was bad, as they spent weeks on endless apocolyptic projections for the super-duper OMG scary sequester. Idiots of malpractice and entirely predictable.

CNN: Hiring slowed sharply in March, with the economy adding only 88,000 jobs, the lowest monthly gain since last June.  The unemployment rate slipped to 7.6%, according to a Labor Department report released Friday. But it's not good news: It's because nearly 500,000 people dropped out of the labor market.

ABC News:  The unemployment rate fell to 7.6 percent in March but just 88,000 jobs were added, raising fears that the economy is beginning to cool after several strong months.  Ahead of Friday's jobs report, economists braced themselves for grim numbers. On Thursday, the Labor Department reported that the number of jobless Americans filing unemployment claims increased for the third consecutive time last week.

CBS News: The Labor Department said 88,000 jobs were created in March and the unemployment rate edged lower to 7.6 percent, the lowest rate since December 2008. Let's not sugar coat it: This was a lousy report.

NBC News: Jobs growth stumbled in March as U.S. employers paused to take stock amid Washington's financial belt-tightening and Europe's continuing financial crisis.  The Labor Department reported that the U.S. economy created 88,000 non-farm jobs in March, much lower than the 195,000 to 200,000 expected and well below February's 254,000 increase. March's job creation was the lowest in nine months.

And on, and on...pathetic JournoList, really pathetic.

the leap of 25 million from 1997 coincides with the dot.com bubble when the interent became fully integrated in the peoples way of life.

the fact that states can shift payment for people if they come off unemployment benefit (state pays) and onto disability benefit (federal) strikes a large bell. 14 million people, of which (guesstimate) 10 million have shifted to disability which explains 10/25 or 40% of the increase.

guesstimate again is the loss of a further 10 million from the shift in manufacturing jobs thanks to the pimp Clinton and the bore Gore with their free trade agreements "shooing off" the manufacturing base into BRIC and satellite BRICS.

why is it so hard ot see that you may make more money siting factories offshore, but you still make money domestically if you stay on shore and you dont put millions out of work. we have seen that robotics can replace most forms of work. so this may be short term (5 years strategically) but in this time, with brains other than pimp CLinton and bore Gore, how less of a deficit would the government have and how much more money would US people have?

(i could "ball-park" the other 5 million being displaced by tech and robots).

On one hand, we have a President and a Senate controlled by a party that has absolutely nothing to gain politically  from crafting policies that create wealth creating (i.e., debt emancipating) employment.  On the other hand, we have a party that has absolutely nothing to gain from crafting an effective message explaining this because they secure reelection by mobilizing their base against the President without actually having to pursue any small government bullshit they keep spooning their base.  Mix that in with about, oh, say 30 years or more of a bullshit education policy and even worse implementation and we get to where we are today.

Prior to entry of women into the workforce in large numbers, labor force particpation was fairly stable at about 59%.  Then, in the early 70's, labor force particpation rose dramatically for 20 years, where it stabilized at about 67%.  So, this drop back to the low 60 percentile level is much worse than it would otherwise appear, particularly because job losses have been concentrated among men and the young.

I have been out of work since September of 2012, while still attempting to make sales for my own personal company I was unable to get any traction on sales momentum. I have attempted to get unemployment for the previous Director of Sales job I had held from 2008 to 2012, but alas Colorado Unemployment may pay you one week and then delay payments for 4 to 6 weeks for "processing". Now I have probably sent out over 750+ resumes since Sept. 2012, with only 3 interviews all which ended in "we have closed this position on the account we are currently unable to hire for it."

So while I am guilty of attempting to garner government assistance, it was impossible to have happen. My guess is because I am overly educated and deemed overly fit to find employment. Which luckily I am resourceful enough to find temp employment via contracted consulting, but nothing permanent. This job market is amazing right now according to the main stream macromedia, I still can't get over how young some of these folks are and being so immensely effected by dimensia.

Basically all I'm saying is that I am against full on government handouts, in a 1 in a million case sometimes it is for the right reasons. For the past 5 years I normally worked two full time jobs consecutively, I am going insane not being able to work or contribute. I feel like a f'in dirtbag filing for unemployment, and having no personal family it pained to me to sometimes ask a friend to borrow money.

I hear you.  Went through the same thing in '82 which forced me to self employment and have been at it since then.  Lost my source of income three times last year and am fortunate to have a little coming in now, although not enough to meet my needs which are not great.

Am thinking of entering the shadow/smuggling economy to make ends meet and screw .gov as it isn't doing anything for me anyway and rarely if ever has.  Things like roads, fire and police I paid for through taxation.

The only thing you have is yourself to count on and your knowledge.  Hope the combination works for you.

LOL, I wish I knew how or had the space to do it. Our government on a state level is becoming more and more adverse to Amendment 64's passage. They are stalling all the legislation for public use, stating that banks can not and will not work with any dispensaries, and no tax ruling has been put in place....In my opinion that law was just passed to show how "progressive" Colorado is, all for image not for the real reasons. I've been here 7 years and the laws around pot are no different now than they were when i got here.

Notice from a technical tracking perspective the labor participation rate is a steady down slope with low variance, without a long term slope change (i.e. a steady long term decline). Projecting forward only gets worse. Heavier long term deficits, and eventual high inflation are inevitable. Plan accordingly.

"It's a big private club and your not in it!" George Carlin famously said and he was right. So what is the end result of all this STUFF that is going down? think about it for a minute.                                                         Millions of people are sitting at home now wondering how they are going to survive.

People are moving in with parents-friends-relatives because things are getting tight. Prepping is a rapidly growing trend and big business not just in the USA but worldwide while Gold and Silver is selling at record levels (not the paper stuff!)                                                                            Guns are flying off the shelves and ammo is hard to find while millions of homes are packed with 'Preps',emergency food etc;                                 That would be the exact scenario rational minds would want to create if they KNEW that civilization was about to get a big fat kick in the teeth!       You would want as many suvivors to be 'Rising from the ashes' and in a position to rebuild economies, wouldn't you?                                                                                             Do you really think the Mayans and many others went to all that trouble for entertainment purposes and that the  PTB would spook the sheep by telling them what the ancient scribes really said if it contained epicly grim and scientificaly inevitable catastrophy?                             A quick trip to you tube and you can see NASA's own trajectory paths for Comet Ison and although still in a cone of uncertainty it is going to come MIGHTY CLOSE to Mars , if it makes it past Mars it will be followed around the Sun 7 days later by Comet Enke and when it comes out the topside it will be heading right over Venus and then Earth,NASA wants you to believe that a Comet is 'a dirty snowball' but many scientists 'strongly disagree' with that theory.(an electron around a nucleus may be more fitting.) Here is a translation of my rant then.  On this wonderfull ZH thing,I have learned a lot in a few years from some of the smartest people I have ever been in contact with in my 50+ years on this planet and I am often baffled by the arcane dealings of finance, but I gather up the crumbs I can.                                                                                                   So I speak of what i know and am somewhat learned in, right now a Comet named Lemmon is coming into view and it is burning green because it is burning Cyanide,we will see it in the sky in the northern hemisphere at the end of this month and will go through It's tail @ August I think, at that same time another Comet will be coming into view,Comet Ison, NASA desires that the public believe that it is just a big ball of dirty ice and they admit that it is A. a Parabolic Comet and B. It is huge and C,It is going to come so close to Mars that Mars is going to get a full haircut,a lot of other weird stuff is going on and ISON is a very unusual Comet, coming out of nowhere on an 11,000 years path,by their estimates.                                                 Snowballs, even in a vacuum do not fly through space at 16 times the speed of a rifle bullet and as far as it's size go's,opinions differ,it may be as large as Earth.

All the financial wizards are looking for a Financial Black Swan but they should get their heads out of their wallets and look up! It has all gone clearly insane and the Fed and Wall Street have gone mad like LSD in the punch bowl on graduation night at a Florida Clown School and this is worldwide,They, the private club that you are not in ,know what is coming, the ancients knew what is coming and they are not telling you, sheep. (nothing personal).                                                         THEY are placing themselves for planet Earth to go Leningrad style.

The Info is out there, (the truth is out there), not from financial dominoes but from above, this is going to be beyond epic. You-Tube yourself a couple of Comet,Mazzaroth,Mayan videos and follow that road.the coming collapse is not Great Depression part Deux,it is Ultra Cosmic Re-set and the Book of Revalations is also worthy of study.

Comets PanStarrs(passed already) and Comets Lemmon,ISON and Encke are a good starting point.

I read on this thread that DHS has enough hollow points to shoot every man, woman and child in the USA six times.  I suppose just in case they miss or hit one of us and don't kill us, there is enough left to finish the job.

Makes one wonder what kind of government for the people by the people would use hollow points on its own citizens?  Aren't they the kind of bullets which disintegrate upon entering a body?  Isn't a normal bullet deadly enough?

Hollow points "spread out" at impact and are effective (leave a bigger hole at exit than entry)

The ad panels to the left and right squeeze the editorial material in the center. My monitor can't display the numerals on the right scale. All I have is a red semicircle without any idea of the numbers involved. I think it is someplace in the sixties, but I have no other clue.

Because the ads are not affected by zooming, the red circle just grows vertically higher and the numbers become even less distinct. You need at least 8 pixels across for each individual number to be distinguishable.

Try using a larger font size for the numbers.

Even though the data is shocking and confirms what many of us know, it's also revealing to see how mainstream outlets have totally obfuscated these issues.  Absolutely no effort is made to understand the economic issues at play, they simply go into full spin mode becaause govt and Federal resesrve "experts" feed them impressively bullshitty explanations for what's going on.  Newspapers and other sources present opinions of the Fed and those that MORE money printing is what's necessary to STIMULATE the economy as fact, although there's never really an explanation about why creating more digital zeroes and ones actually represents real capital and not just a silent and autocratic transfer of wealth.    And they go so far as to do all this without ever looking for a track record with these policies, because were they to ask whether money printing has ever created bona fide prosperity, they wouldn't find a single example.  So much spin and propaganda.
