Dow Jones At New All Time Highs - Here's Why

Tyler Durden's picture

Curious why the Dow Jones Industrial Average just hit new all time highs? Here's a partial list of recent economic events:

  • Markit US PMI    Miss
  • ISM Manufacturing    Miss
  • ISM New York    Miss
  • Vehicle Sales    Miss
  • ADP Employment    Miss
  • ISM Services    Miss
  • Challenger Job Cuts     Miss
  • Initial Claims    Miss
  • Trade Balance    Beat
  • Non-Farm Payrolls    Miss
  • Hourly Earnings    Miss
  • NFIB Small Business    Miss
  • Wholesale Inventories    Miss

And that's ignoring the absolute economic collapse in Europe, the Chinese slowdown, and the Japanese economic basketcase.

What is there to even say anymore: Stalingrad 4 Eva! Remember: central planning works.

and if pictures are better than words...

Will BB buy everything with his BB bucks ? and if so how will we re-price all these assets in real value ?  Sure BB can print money and say XOM or IBM or SPY is worth this many BB bucks but what's it really worth in real measure while the economy sits in a deep doodoo depression and nobody wants or can afford what these companies make anymore ? Will I give a fuck if BB says IBM is worth x in BB bucks ? fuck no but I guess he's determined to show us he can own everything with the money he prints out of thin air. Good luck BB  let us know how you plan to reprice all this shit to reality once your done fucking with it.

On a related note,I really think silver, being down so much in price recently, presumably due to lack of demand, is a great buy at this price, and I would definitely buy some, except that all the dealers I check with are out of stock.  Joseph Heller couldn't invent stuff this fucked up.

This is my point - I WOULD buy silver if I could, because dollars are worthless, but I can't buy silver because there's none in stock, although if it were in stock, the price would be fantastic.  It's like something straight out of fucking Catch 22.

I think he was refering to retail investors (joe 401K).  He thinks they will think they are missing a ride up and jump in, giving the market another leg up.  I think the majority has been burned twice (2000 and 2008) and won't get burned again.  I may be wrong, but I think the more interesting question is how to short a market in real terms.  Until I figure that out, I'll sit on my silver and wait for the collapse.  Earnings season the trigger?

the big collapse will be here when the S&P and the DOW double in one day and the dollar loses 70% of it's value in a month.
And to be sure you don't profit from it, they'll raise taxes on gains to 50%... because that's only fair.

Simply amazing that not one of the major retirement funds (like Calpers) has decided to lock in any profits - everyone is non stop buying.  I would expect it from the algo bullshit but these multi-billion dollar funds have to be sitting on 10-15% gains on the year in just a few months. To not lock in profits is purely stupid imo.  The fact that nothing stops the buying on low volume tells me that all the players are "in" until the scam is up.

I guess everyone got the same call from Bernanke about the game plan.  You buy stocks.  I buy futures.  We both win.

Well, it makes sense if you're trying to collapse the system.   That is, get the majority of the population into a position where their retirement and investments are gone.  Then they must be dependent upon the very government that took it all from them?   By it, I mean freedom.

Earnings wont matter - the market normally looks 3-6 months ahead.  Perhaps we have moved ot looking 2+ years ahead (aka internet bubble 2.0) They will not care about this Q earnings at all.  would not be surprised to have 60% of the companies miss and the market moves up another 5%.  Even lowering of estimates does not seem to affect things - that is simply discounted.

Pravda USA regurgitates reality into non-reality. And, then, it collapses, because the lies get so bad, no one can relate to them anymore.

There was a point during the peak of Stalin’s power when no Russian any longer believed the official line that Russia was strong and moving forward because it was completely devoid of the truth.

Pravda USA has developed its official line on where the country is and its priorities on the morning shows, on the networks, with the entertainment, by the comedians, and from the press to the point, that just like in the U.S.S.R., there are literally thousands every week who’ve stopped believing it.

It seeps into the public mind, even those in the military and the government sector, that we are living a lie.

And that is when the people begin to try to bring it down.

We’ve reached the point where the public is starting to draw the line. When a man can no longer receive a pension from his company, when he and his wife are working three jobs to make ends meet, when the gasoline that takes him to work keeps going up, and, then, he sees the bankers and politicos may seize his small personal retirement account after taking his life’s savings, we’re talking the end of the bankers’ run.

Fortunately, we have an example of the failure of the banker plan to create crisis and take over the world – The EU. They can’t bail it, they can’t fix it, and they can’t put it together again. They’ve got chaos and everybody on the alert that the politicians are trying to take their lives.

I remember the internet Bubble. My Dad told me in 1999 to pull out all the way...sadly, I only pulled out half way and lost most of the other half of that money thinking, "I know better....stock prices never drop."

"Houses prices never drop," also they say.

It's gonna be worse then last time. As my Dad says, "Hope for the Worse, but prepare for the Worser."

Couldn't the FED just combine with the US Post Office.  Then they could just hand out newly printed dollars with your mail and we could get to DOW 100K sooner and save the post office as everyone would want mail and dollars everyday!

I can't believe it; fund managers telling people now is the time to buy.

Funny, I remember hearing the same things in 2000 and 2007.

Market levels unchanged since 1999, with 14 years of let's say 3% inflation, stocks are worth -42%.

Oh yeah, buy this market at the all time highs, we promise you will "make money".

Yes Wall Street and Hollywood have Completely Collided as is witnessed by the market's "special effects".

Both are equally lame and ludicrous.
Both have absolutely no basis in sanity or reality.

So the early leak of the FOMC minutes is the real reason... but that shouldn't stop you from imagining other reasons. Carry on.
