Korea's Boy Who Cried Wolf Is Now Screaming "Thermonuclear War"

Tyler Durden's picture

The boy who cried wolf is now openly screaming "thermonuclear war." No, really. AFP reports that North Korea said Tuesday the Korean peninsula was headed for "thermo-nuclear" war and advised foreigners to consider leaving South Korea, as the UN chief warned of a potentially "uncontrollable" situation. "Tuesday's advisory -- greeted largely with indifference -- followed a similar one last week to foreign embassies in Pyongyang, to consider evacuating by April 10 on the grounds war may break out. "The situation on the Korean Peninsula is inching close to a thermo-nuclear war," the Asia-Pacific Peace Committee said in a statement carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency." The result - a big yawn, which sadly for Kim Junior is the worst reaction. After all what is a dictator with an inferiority complex and a laughable military to do to get some respect around here and score some "nuisance value" cash from the superpowers (which has been his entire plan all along).

The problem is he has done all the possible jawboning he could, and the next option is i) to follow through on one or more of his endless and increasingly idiotic threats, or ii) step back from the "thermonuclear" brink and be on the lookout for a military coup as he has pushed so far he can't possible retrace without losing all credibility, and fear a violent overthrow. Naturally, both options are hardly appetizing but the time to chose is rapidly approaching. And if he can't make up his mind, the increasingly ample US military presence in the region will be happy to make it for him.

From AFP:

Saying it did not want to see foreigners in South Korea "fall victim", the statement requested all foreign institutions, enterprises and tourists "to take measures for shelter and evacuation".

The committee blamed the heightened war risk on the "warmongering US" and its South Korean "puppets" who were intent on invasion.

The US dismissed the warning as "unhelpful" on Tuesday. White House spokesman Jay Carney criticised Pyongyang for more "unhelpful rhetoric that serves only to escalate tensions".

The "thermo-nuclear war" threat has been wielded several times in recent months -- most recently on March 7 -- despite expert opinion that North Korea is nowhere near developing such an advanced nuclear device.

"It is our current assessment that there is no immediate risk to British nationals in South Korea," a British embassy spokesman said, echoing similar statements from the US, French and other missions.

Last week's warning to embassies in Pyongyang was also largely dismissed as empty rhetoric, with most governments making it clear they had no plans to withdraw personnel.

Hollow warnings galore:

Yonhap news agency Tuesday cited South Korean intelligence as saying the North had completed preparations for an expected missile test-launch -- possibly to coincide with April 15 celebrations for the birthday of late founder Kim Il-Sung.

Japan, where the armed forces have been authorised to shoot down any North Korean missile headed towards its territory, said Tuesday it had deployed Patriot missiles in its capital as a pre-emptive defence measure.

A top US military commander said Tuesday that he favoured shooting down a North Korean missile only if it threatened the United States or Washington's allies in the region.

When asked by lawmakers if he supported knocking out any missile fired by North Korea, Admiral Samuel Locklear, head of US Pacific Command, said: "I would not recommend that".

But he told the Senate Armed Services Committee he would "certainly recommend" intercepting an incoming North Korean missile "if it was in defence of our allies" or the United States.

And from an "interception" to very rapid escalation, it is only a drone throw away. Escalation, that is, which is completely under the control of the US military, and which is presented to the world in such flashing red headlines that the GETCO algos translate each incremental development into yet another ES liftathon frenzy. Because what better way to go out at the all time S&P top than in a mushroom cloud blaze of glory.

All we need to do is direct a few Bernanke bucks in the direction of NK and all will be peaceful again.  This is nothing more than the usual Asian bribe.

Cost of war on Iraq: $815bn
Iraq's GDP 10 years later: $110bn

Cost of war on Afghanistan: $630bn
Afghanistan's GDP 10 years later: $22bn

What the fuck does the US have to gain from orchastrating such vastly expensive wars? You haven't even won one yet!

What a complete waste of US tax money. Absolutely fuck all gain. Zilch.

Why are you even in Korea? Why are you once again getting dragged into spending a $1,000bn to fight an economy worth $10bn?

A: Because your all too fucking dumb to see it. Why do Americans waste all your money on weapons to battle against the weak and broke? What the fuck is the point?

Yet you all love it. You love pissing your money away in this fashion. You all stock your own weapons at home. It's a kind of US disease.

Just go home and leave them to it. Give every adult a $5,000 tax break instead. It's the dumbest thing I ever saw.

I'd throw you some smart 19th century witticism or a high-roller nod to the knowledge and shoeshine of the '20s, or maybe a hundred other tells.

If you fail to cost externalities, your system is broken.

Real lesson you need to learn is that Currency is not a fixed medium. Wars aren't about <$ cost> they're about Future % on Options.

Oh, wait. Sorry, missed the trick ~ you're mixing in this weird dual vibe of concern troll with right wing Libertarian with the West Cowboy pick and all. Oh. Shit.

Breakdown in grammar at the end.

It's either Borat or a bot gone wrong. So sad.

I guess it depends on who has the gold and is holding your debt (balls) and who doesn't as to what missile launches will and will not be ignored. e.g. the Chinese sub-launched missile off California in November 2010:

I think this temper tantrum by the fat boy was caused by the joint US, South Korean military maneuvers. Maybe practicing war games off North Korea's border is not a good idea.
If you have a crazy old guy with a gun collection as a neighbor, you don't let your dog go over an shit on his lawn. Just saying.

While they can make a half-assed fission weapon, I don't for a moment think they can make a THERMO-nuclear bomb.

Well, this evil little f*** is having some effect.  I am sure that having North Korea as it is, is part of the reason that the South Korean fertility rate was 1.3 in 2012.  They make the Chinese look like profligate breeders.

The South Koreans used to abort their little girls  -  in 1990-2002 the male/female birth ratio was 117/100.  Now it is back down to 107/100 (left alone, by nature as it were, it's 105/100).  Then they sort of came to a realization as a society that this wasn't good.  Perhaps because their population is now 30 percent Christian.

However  -  South Koreans will not adopt.  They are obsessed with biological descent.  That is why Americans can still adopt from South Korea, even though it is a rich country, and there are plenty of infertile couples.  They have NO INTEREST in a kid that is not biologically theirs (horrible).  Also, birth out of wedlock is considered extremely shameful.  If a woman gets pregnant, she cannot get a job and support herself and her child.  And the paternal grandparents *will try to pressure her to have an abortion.*  Is that sick or what?

But North Korea has to be a factor.  Who would want to reproduce, with that nearby.  And, well, with China nearby.  And Japan nearby.  Hmm.  The secret weapon, hiding in plain sight.

I would like to have several kids of my own, and then maybe later in life would consider adopting a child from Eastern Europe, or maybe Eastern Asia.  I feel like I actually DO have decent genes to pass on (my family generally lives to 95+ if we don't die from accidents or wars first) and that my children (who will most likely have intelligence far above average) will contribute to the rebuilding of civilization one day. Can't say the same about the majority of people doing most of the breeding in Western countries these days.

Gosh... six pages of posts on this stupid topic.  Is anyone not bored to tears by these infantile rantings of the US and NK "officials"?

THIS IS ALL A GIANT RUSE.  It will suck the life force out of you to spend your time pondering a war which will never happen.  Go home, folks... nothing to see here... move along.

You'd be better served pondering the life cycle of a jellyfish.  Seriously, where do we get these ideas that a maniac with nuclear weapons is ready to blow us up?  From Senators and mainstream media... you mean the same ones who told us that 19 hijackers crashed some planes?  You shouldn't believe ANYTHING they say or even spend an iota of your precious life debating it.  I hereby solemnly relegate this article thread to the wastebin.  Not to say that anyone's comments are not worthy of intellectual acknowledgement.  It's just being misallocated at the moment.

Yeah, I think it is possible to underestimate the degree to which local selection pressures can pick for psychopaths. Our civilization is dominated by our own worst psychosociopaths. As far as I can tell, North Korea is dominated by their own local psychotic people, who were the best at being dishonest and violent within their own society. ... Therefore, I think it is quite possible that we underestimate the degree to which our own civilization is controlled by psychopaths, who are provoking the psychopaths that control North Korea!  Add weapons that are trillions of times more powerful into that mixture, and we have a very volatile situation!

Generally, I think that vast majority of relatively mainstream people, who are living inside of our own civilization, are incapable of understanding how off the scale evil and insane the most successful psychosociopaths could become! Our own civilization, for generation after generation, has allowed our society to become more and more dominated by runaway systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence. North Koreans have been doing that too, in their own way! I doubt that the vast majority of people could understand that, because they most assuredly do not want to! For quite a while, the basic metaphor has been that people have been standing in a pool of gasoline, while their insane "leaders" have been waving matches at each other, and threatening to light them.

It only takes some of those, who are sufficiently insane, to get that fire going!

Well, if shit does go down and we're left as struggling to survive as cannibals in the post-nuclear apocalyptic world, I'll just put this up here for posterity (even though the tubes and servers would likely be fried or down):

"A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?"

Chess is 2 dimensional.

What I do when I'm losing is punch the other guy in the face and wipe out the board.

(Joking, I wouldn't do that - but it illustrates a point... play by rules made for the winners and you're going to lose)
