Where Honesty Is The Worst Policy

Tyler Durden's picture

Remember the Wal-Mart employee who sent out an intercepted email disclosing that "Wal-Mart February sales were a "total disaster", and was the worst monthly start since 2006"? Well, he won't be making that mistake ever again.

In brief: feel like being truthy? Go for it - just make sure to enjoy the benefits provided by unemployment benefits and disability.

I know a lot of people here are not fans of Noam Chomsky... think he's controlled opposition, or whatever. But people should take the time to read the first few chapters of "Manufacturing Consent". He provides a compelling description of the "how" behind the narrative.

Bingo.  The outcome here will be no different.  I say Texas leaves first.  They will get their gold back and are already working on a new banking system.  The question is whether or not Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah go with them.  All of these states are already recognizing alternative medians of exchange.

at the time Perestroika was in full swing back in the USSR. which meant some form of change. that is the real difference with the US now- there is no change here and it wont happen for a long time. all the talk of debt being unsustainable- what a crock of shit. at the first whiff of trouble entire world piles into Treasuries and USD which will keep this farce going for a long time. as far as people being punished for speaking truthfully or even their mind- that is basically dead in the US. no-one in his/her right mind will talk out of some perceived consensus in workplace- why? Nothing will ever change. So this is another embodiment of moral hazard whereby those who live and act prudently/honestly never get ahead in this life and those that lie, cheat etc.- well these folks got it all figured out……

just saying.....

My career took a lot of bad turns because I was what I consider "honest", there truly was no room for talent that did not tow the line.  Even the powerful that were honest were bought out over time.  Sad but true. I can sleep at night and though it seemed like they were getting away with all sorts of crap at the time, looking at them now, I think I made good decisions.  Every one of them are living wrecks. Shattered families and lonely lives.  Seems you can't just be a prick in your professional life.  It becomes you and will creep into your family and personal life.

Your comment shows honesty is always the best policy but it isn't risk or cost free. I left a firm when it's new product went into meltdown after a few months in production at customer sites. I wouldn't sell to any manufacturer who didn't have a backup to the system we knew would soon fail. I was told that with that attitude, I was no salesman and should resign which I did, on the spot. I was hired the next day by people in the industry who knew what was going on, so no problem for me.

I cashed out options for $11K. Today their stock trades for < $1 and the company is a joke in the industry. So go with your instincts when honesty is questioned. Your integrity should never be questionable.

Banks and health insurance companies are really just software companies.  I commented on this brillian article here and read the entire article as written by an anonymous banker.  He gets is and this thinking laid out proves it with models that lie and algorithmic formulas that execute all of this.  He also had a lot of experience with start up companies so a "hybrid" as I call him.

This is the reality and to quote Mike Oslinski who wrote the software for the sub prime loands that all banks used and remodeled, "you can do anything with software" but he also addresses the clash with the real world versus the fantasies models create.

http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/04/banks-are-actually-just-software....

I call this honesty as it is what's really happening and economists are just using tools and sofware written by people smarter than them, Quants and Programmers so they are guessing too.  So, wonder why health insurance premiums keep going up so high, you are paying for a lot of software and anaytics that are sold.  Right now nobody has a good handle on big data value with many just slinging queries against the wall to see what sticks.  One day perhaps someone will get smart enough to ask to view models and make those that move the money accountable, but not holding my breath as all are so well duped.

Big data is a meme created by storage companies.

Most companies have no idea what to do with it.  You're far more likely to find random correlations between totally unrelated data sets than you are real ones. A nice example I saw was a very high correlation 0.97 between lemon imports from Mexico and US road fatalities.

http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ci700332k

Simply put. Big data is science done backwards.

Course the real problems start when some retard with connections finds some bollocks (but plausible) correlation and then tries to change the world.

We must have more lemons.

And if it doesn't work for them just take a leaf from the Keynesian manual. Clearly you needed BIgger Data! Record more inane crap and run bigger, longer, harder and uncut queries against it.

When I worked for a European firm, we were instructed to use proper terms to describe outcomes: a part was not repaired by being bent into position, it was adjusted. When a product launch fizzled with inventory distribution problems, "we were too successful!"; when a project produced insufficient results, "we were less successful". Being a chemical company, we never had disasters- that term was to be used to describe DuPont or Union Carbide plant explosions and toxic vapor releases, only.

Walmart quarter ends April 30.

Walmart's accountants have 20 days to cook the numbers - and cook them well done.

Here's the likely report - Walmart's EPS hit because management bought back enough shares to make this number.  Walmart's revenue will be down, but management stuffed enough warehouses in Cuba and called them sales out.

In summary, Walmart had a fantastic quarter.  The only issue is that malls/big box stores are empty.  Oh wait - sales increase online so that's no longer relevant.

Isn't it great?
