Over 150 Dead, Thousands Injured After 6.6 Quake Strikes China's Sichuan Province

Tyler Durden's picture

In all the jubilation last night following the capture of the 19 year terrorism suspect, virtually everyone missed news that a massive 7.0 magnitude quake according to the China Earthquake Administration (and 6.6 according to the USGS including countless aftershocks) hit China's Sichuan province, leaving at least 156 dead and over 2200 injured according to the latest estimate from Xinhua. The epicenter was not too far from the infamous earthquake five years ago when 70,000 people died, and millions were left homeless as a result. The earthquake occurred at 8.02 a.m. (0002 GMT) in Lushan county near Ya'an city and the epicentre had a depth of 12 km (7.5 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was felt by residents in neighbouring provinces and in the provincial capital of Chengdu, causing many people to rush out of buildings, according to accounts on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo microblogging service.

BBC reports:

The 6.6-magnitude quake wrecked buildings, cut power and blocked roads in Lushan county, killing more than 100 and injuring hundreds, officials say.

Rescuers are struggling to get through to the worst-affected areas because of aftershocks and landslides.

Tens of thousands were killed in a quake that hit Sichuan in 2008.

The latest quake, initially reported as of 7.0 magnitude, struck at 08:02 local time (00:02 GMT).

Its epicentre was in a rural area some 115km (70 miles) west of provincial capital Chengdu, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

State broadcaster CCTV showed images of injured people being taken to hospital in Lushan.

One injured man told the channel: "We still live in our old house, the new one is not ready yet. Our house just collapsed. Everything collapsed."

The quake was measured at 12km below the surface, a shallow depth that usually indicates extensive damage.

Aerial shots of Lushan showed buildings collapsed or without roofs.

Power has been lost in the area, water supplies have been cut and telephone lines are also down.

People in Chengdu felt the tremor and came running into the streets wrapped in blankets.

Chengdu resident Aaron Ozment told the BBC there was huge confusion in the city.

"I threw on a some clothes quickly and made my way into the courtyard of my complex," he said.

"Making calls was almost impossible; everybody was trying to contact everybody they knew."

Residents in the nearest city to the epicentre, Ya'an, felt jolts from the quake and aftershocks, but the city does not appear to have suffered major damage.

State news agency Xinhua said more than 6,000 soldiers had been despatched to help with rescue efforts.

Premier Li Keqiang is travelling to Sichuan to oversee the operation.

"The current most urgent issue is grasping the first 24 hours since the quake's occurrence, the golden time for saving lives," Mr Li was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

The 2008 disaster in Sichuan left five million people homeless.

Don't expect to read much more about this: we live in a world in which hundreds dead thousands of miles away is an out of sight, out of mind statistic, while the capture of one 19 year old deranged youth is cause of edge of your seat realty TV drama and entertainment.

As for China, following the toxic Beijing smog blanket, the animal apocalypse and the bird flu breakout, an onslaught of earthquakes somehow did seem as a logical next step.

One of these days the disaster won't be so localized.

Those of you that do not have a sword sell your cloak and buy one.

Bearwagon's picture

If someone wants to build his own sword from scratch, a leaf spring from a big truck would be a viable material to start with.

Is Conan a good training video then?

Yes, if aspiring to be a bad actor is your goal...

krispkritter's picture

How about a bad Governor?

Bearwagon's picture

No, my brother has once built a replica of that sword from Conan. It is not balanced rightly, and nearly useless as a weapon.

How far do you go, to keep ppl from having or making weapons?

Bearwagon's picture

You can't keep the people from having or making the weapons I have in mind. No matter how far you are willing to go ...

Winston Churchill's picture

You can't.Someone with a basic knowledge of chemistry can make high explosives

from supplies bought at CVS, and discount auto.

Pure glycerin, and sulphuric acid(to make your own nitric) and a couple of other things,

soon get you to nitro, and plastique is a simple futher step.Basically anything can be

explosive with the right primer/detonator.

Here's another threadjack. Just imagine being a student with teachers that are such fucking losers as this one, one that apparently doesn't even know that a constitution exists. By all means, let's give an 8th grader a police record over a T-shirt. What a bunch of fucking assholes we have in this school system.

"(WOWK TV) – When 8th grade Jared Marcum got dressed for school this morning he says he had no idea that his pro-Second Amendment shirt would initiate what he calls a fight over his First Amendment rights.

“I never thought it would go this far because honestly I don’t see a problem with this, there shouldn’t be a problem with this,” Jared said.

It was the image of a gun printed on Jared’s t-shirt that sparked a dispute between a Logan Middle School teacher and Jared, that ended with Jared suspended, arrested and facing two charges, obstruction and disturbing the education process, on his otherwise spotless record.

Jared’s father Allen Lardieri says he’s angry he had to rush from work to pick his son up from jail over something he says was blown way out of proportion.

“I don’t’ see how anybody would have an issue with a hunting rifle and NRA put on a t-shirt, especially when policy doesn’t forbid it,” Lardieri said.

The Logan County School District’s dress code policy prohibits clothing that displays profanity, violence, discriminatory messages and more but nowhere in the document does it say anything about gun images.

“He did not violate any school policy,” Lardieri reiterates. “He did not become aggressive.”

Now, Lardieri says he’s ready to fight until the situation is made right.

“I will go to the ends of the earth, I will call people, I will write letters, I will do everything in the legal realm to make sure this does not happen again,” Lardieri said.

Logan City Police did confirm that Jared had been arrested and charged today.

13 news tried contacting the Logan County School District but has not heard anything back.

It's not a threadjack, it's somehow pertinent. No pandas were harmed in the earthquake, so we cdan safely ignore it now and focus on more important things, as you have so perspcaciously done.

The Second Rule's picture

Did someone say Pandas? How insensitive.

P.S. chubbar really put some effort into that threadjack. Sorry.

de3de8's picture

Second Rule,
Thanks for the gut laugh!

Bearwagon's picture

Short answer (because it is sunday): Allen and Jared Lardieri should not, by any means, take this personally. It has not much to do with them- it is just that now and then a sacrifice has to be made, to keep the sheeple asheep. They should play along with the script instead of provocating an even harsher answer by pointing out the injustice.

IridiumRebel's picture

To the Greenwich story about gun makers thinking of leaving....DO IT. I leave Conectisucks in two months and I cannot wait.

"It's like the government of Connecticut is saying to the industry: `we don't care about you,' " Maidment said, noting changes in Connecticut and other jurisdictions are going to affect Connecticut companies; "Obviously, it's a different environment for the firearms industry."

However, the direct impact of Connecticut's law on its gun makers isn't clear, as the state has historically had one of the lowest rates of gun ownership in the nation, according to USACarry.com. Still, shares in Sturm Ruger, based in the Southport section of Fairfield and the state's only publicly traded gun maker, fell 13 percent in the weeks leading up to the signing of the Connecticut bill, dropping to $46.99 from as high as $54.24.

Connecticut has the magic formula for its economic demise: No jobs, high taxes, liberals in office, urban entitlement zones, illegal sanctuary cities, young people and people/business moving out of state, and an increasingly elderly population. Keep electing liberals and watch the state cirle the drain.

robochess's picture

Hope you're not moving to socialist Maryland. It makes Ct. look like a capitalist stronghold.

IridiumRebel's picture

My wife is from Frederick. She knows better. Her Step dad works for MDOT, but lives just over the border in WV. He had a MD ID, but is placing it back into WV just outta spite. He is retiring early just so they can get outta there. MD is following the NE state's recipe for financial disaster. We will not be moving to MD. We are moving to Cincinatti cuz my folks are there and just retired so we got baby help. I know it is not the most conservative, but we like the city and Ohio has rejected ACA. That sealed it. If it starts to suck, we will move over the border to Kentucky. If that doesn't work, we are cashing out and moving to Chile. From there it will be Mars.

EDIT: I like how MD is taxing rain now. Now that is creative. Next they should try to tax air.

RafterManFMJ's picture

Mars is pretty OK, still rural but a great many developments have been built. Plus it's filling with people from Pittsburgh so I forecast more of a liberal bent. So, I'd stay off Mars.

Now Venus, that's more rural but with less job opportunities. Give it a look.
