Last night we showed what turned out to be Dzhokar Tsarnaev's 'getaway' vehicle from images on his twitter feed. It turns out that in one of those images was another car - a black BMW 330Xi - that has become very important to the ongoing investigation. As The Daily Mail reports, last night two young men (light-skinned, thin, and short) described by neighbors as "nice boys" and their girlfriend were arrested in connection with the Boston Bombings. They are thought to be frtom Kazakhstan, and had not been since the bombings until the FBI raided their home - based on suggestions that Dzokhar had lived there. Despite the 'nice boys' comments, neighbors claimed the men had stolen the BMW but Azmat and Diaz, students at UMass, "who used to party til 3 or 4 in the morning," had one more unsettling surprise up their sleeves... the license plate of their car... "Terrorista#1".
and just to add some more spice to this intrigue... the sticker in the back of the car read: "Fuck You, You Fucking Fuck." Indeed...

The cops have gone full on military now Rand. I saw a Boston SWAT team arrive on an APC in full Army Combat rig. The billions in homeland security money handed out was used to upgrade local police forces to full combat infantry standards.
But in my small town the local cops used Homeland Security money to by a dozen new huge top of the line SUV's. For a city force of 7 guys and a 6 man county Sheriff's department. In a county with 12K residents 90% wilderness with two small towns os 3,500K each.
It truly is remarkable how militarized they have become. Some of the images I have seen over the last few days make me gasp, but many don't even seem to notice. As for the top of the line SUV police cruises, it is the oldest trick in the book for tryanical government to make sure the police have the nicest stuff in town.
I should add that since most of this vast county is state forest and federal wilderness the Homland security money ended up in many new cop snowmobiles, for wheeler ATV's, Jet Skies [for big lake rescue].
Our cops not only drive around in massive SUV's, but they have all the toys a boy could want. A couple times every summer they drive down past my house to the Big Lake Superior to practice jet skie riding [for water rescue of course]. It is no wonder all the local kids want to become local cops or sheriffs. They see the life style and the local guys retired and living the out door lifestyle before they even hit 50! It's a good life if you can get it.
The biggest crime around here is the local meth cookers, and a few high school kids lighting up a joint or breaking into a cabin up in the woods. Small time stuff. The cops have the dream life in this county!

That's not combat infrantry standards. You're crazy. I listened to the scanner feeds all day Friday. What I heard was astounding--the police had terrible logistical problems. They couldn't get food, water, bathroom breaks, guns, dogs, batteries. Other than a few SWAT units, they were badly unprepared for an operation of any length. They defeated themselves. A real conflict against a determined adversary would wear them down very quickly.

I don't give a shit if these kids set those bombs or not- they have been in the US since they were 9 and 16. The story here isn't bombs and it isn't motives (though my curiousity is piqued there.) Somewhere I read these young-men (who are adults, 24 and 19 are not 'kids') have been in the US a decade or so? But the oldest visited central Asia recently? So it could be a cell. But the family's shock and disbelief at what has suddenly happened does make a convincing case that it's home-grown. The reality remains these guys got the know-how and the materiel from somewhere. To do it themselves would take a lot of time, risk and dedication to a long-term plan, which every one who knew them says they didn't see or detect any sign of.
All we do have is the hearsay of protracted FBI involvements with the accused, and a father that just came back to the US from Russia and is apparently shocked and bewildered at how this could possibly have occurred to, and within, his own family.
Which means it probably wasn't an embedded cell. The circumstances look much too sudden, if not adhoc, which suggests they didn't have long-term planning and acting, and that they didn't develop the personal capacities, skills and materiel-base for this to occur. Which would mean they were possibly handed it on a platter.
I despise speculation of this sort, but it seems valid to be asking who we know that has a well-established track-record of doing that sort of thing within the USA? Because unless there's an unambiguous foreign network linkage here ...

To arrest someone like that, they can't just have Terrorista on their license plate. They have to have done something criminal, or be involved in a conspiracy to commit a crime. Their immigration status was fine.
I noticed that the father is in denial, although apparently not his brother (the suspects' uncle), who really let loose for the media. Apparently, someone at least was concerned about the younger brother being led down the wrong path by his older brother.
However, what the Chechen president said about the suspects' not being radicalized in Chechnya is very likely correct. Chechnya has had a steady stream of international free-lance jihadis who've tried (with some success) to connect the local Russian-Chechen conflict with pan-Islamic movements like al Qa'eda. But there's no evidence that the brothers were affected by this.
What is true is that their apartment, on Norfolk Street in Cambridge, is around the corner from the Islamic Society of Boston's Cambridge branch. The main ISB in Roxbury (a neighborhood in Boston, across the river from Cambridge) opened its new mosque in 2009 to some controversy. There have been repeated cases of various people, police, reporters, etc., catching the ISB promoting or hosting radical jihadi stuff. The City of Boston was naive in welcoming the ISB as another wonderful piece of multiculturalism. The Boston city government and the Massachusetts state government have become belatedly wiser about this connection recently. The ISB imam was dis-invited to the Boston memorial service on Thursday, and a different imam, from the American Islamic Congress, took his place. It seems now that the ISB is partly funded and controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood. The money is part of the empire of Salafi/Wahhabi funding and ideology emanating from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. If you remember the 9/11 attackers, this should all sound familiar.

I think you're on the right track. These two had their minds warped. But it's all a symptom of liberal politics, multiculturalism, and do as you please, easy ethics and morals. It's all wrapped up in the east coast city lifestyle, too. Ignorant.
Well, Boston in particular is a capital of some of the goofiest PC multiculturalism. Much of it is harmless or just mildly annoying. For many people, "multiculturalism" just means "let's go out to eat at an ethnic restaurant."
But then there are cases like Islamic radicals where this sort of official blindness is not goofy or harmless, but actually dangerous.

BTW, I couldn't help but thinking of the similarity to radical Islamists in Europe when I read about the brothers. The radicalization happens after they arrive in the West, not in their native countries. And it's the younger generation, not the older, that's having trouble assimilating. The older brother wrote that he had no American friends and didn't understand us at all -- even though he boxed in a league here and hoped to box for the US in the Olympics, and apparently had an American wife (who converted to Islam), who bore him a child.
As readers of ZH might suspect, the latter problem might have something to do with the terrible job market for anyone under 35 ... just saying. The uncle who berated them on TV is a generation older and seems to have done pretty well in the US. I don't feel that sorry for the older brother. But the 19-year-old is a sad case of being probably brainwashed or misled by his older brother.

Remarkable how Syrian president Bashar al-Asad in an interview just a few days before the bombing warned the West about exactly this sort of thing.
"You support extremists (yes, like Chechens, Moroccan and Turkish youngsters from Europe) to fight in Syria and you will see Jihadism come right back to you, to the center of Europe and America".
Not saying that Syria would be behind it, just that what he was saying makes a lot of sense.
