Visualizing Life In America From 1983 To Today

Tyler Durden's picture

A lot has changed in 30 years - from Miami Vice and Flashdance to Hunger Games and Taylor Swift; but away from the end of legwarmers (and rolled-up jacket sleeves), GDP has more than tripled from $3.5 trillion as household incomes, home prices, and employment have shifted dramatically but not equally...

Okay I was there in 1983 - not representative.

Moreover, the average man/woman of today would have tattoos covering 30% of the body and numerous facial piercings.

imo, the big change began more recently, though somewhat prepped from 1980 on.

as mr. kunstler notes below (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-04-23/guest-post-weve-dug-pretty-damn...):

It’s especially remarkable that a nation with fairly deep traditions of free thought and speech, with durable institutions for purveying them (a free press), should sleepwalk into a captivity of pervasive, systematic, institutionalized lying and fraud. The people of Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia suffered under such regimes at gunpoint, with boots on their necks, but in the USA of Bush and now Obama, we have conveyed ourselves to very similar circumstances willingly, like little children skipping through the gates of Disney World, with gleeful disregard for the consequences.

Then there's this looooong blank space. I see this old guy with a streaked beard, white hair at his temples, a dazed look on his face. I'm looking in the mirror.  The hot chick is still there, except......her boobs are three inches lower.

Lebens, there is something in what you say. I don't know that every age is progressively worse than the last; I think civility ebbs and flows with the times and the Zeitgeist, but I'm only 60. What do I know?

But in this era, some things have certainly gone downhill, and civility and respect for women have utterly collapsed. You don't expect too much in the way of enlightened attitudes toward womenfolk in North Waziristan; but here in the West we allow unspeakable abuse. We send mothers of young children into combat; we pressure women who don't want them into abortions, for economic reasons; inflation has pushed women out into the workforce, where few of them really want to be; we tolerate prostitution and the hideous porn industry. We really, truly suck.

And by "we", I mean the "People are production units" corporate bankster machine, which the rest of us tolerate and support with our taxes and fees and our participation in the Paper Money fraud.

Paying for dinner and flowers, etc is a way of saying something very Last Century: Not, "You can repay me by banging me later on", but "I bring flowers, pay for dinner and treat you with respect, and I'm more than repaid with the pleasure of your company." A concept that's lost on a lot of the dicks that are running around with small brains attached.

You're so right. I'd add in 1983, you'd get into a bar room fight, cops are called, each guy is asked if he wants to press charges, both answer negative, and the cop says "Okay. Both of you assholes get outa here and don't let me see you again."
Today....it's like a federal fuckin' felony.

Let us recall that "When modern IQ tests are devised, the mean (average) score within an age group is set to 100 and the standard deviation (SD) almost always to 15" sourced from wikipedia because I'm lazy.

We'll give you the benfit of the doubt though and assume perhaps you meant the mode rather than the mean.

Women getting the right to vote was a sad day. Little did they know that they hastened the demise of the republic.

Kinder, Kirche, Kuche.

I'm so glad the male relatives in my life when I was growing up taught me fishing, shooting, and a love of the outdoors.  The three things you mention are wonderful when they serve as supports within a free and inquiring home, and not as walls to enclose and imprison another within someone else's construct.

Sometime in the '60s I marked woman's suffrage as the beginning of the end, before Federal Reserve, before policy positions had to be 'softened' to accommodate the women voters.  I've been very unpopular for a very long time.

Then again?

Well I will take offense to this as there is NO right to vote.

It is a privilege bestowed on you, and taken away, by government.

While long-term capital gains tax was reduced to 20% from 28% in 1983 for capital holders, now is at 0% for those in the 10% and 15% ordinary income tax brackets (read that as non-salaried money class). Progress!~ After all, we were told back then, 'There Is No Alternative.' We can fully comprehend what TINA really means by now.

I'll buy all the "top end" Mustangs you got for $31k.  The only Mustangs my former employer sells go for well north of $35k.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say he meant a fully-loaded regular Mustang, as in the V8 with wide tires and 5-disc CD.  That did cost about $29K-$30K in 2006 if your preordered one and paid their asking price.  You're probably thinking of the stuff like the Roush and Shelby variants, though, which are significantly more expensive.
