Visualizing Life In America From 1983 To Today
A lot has changed in 30 years - from Miami Vice and Flashdance to Hunger Games and Taylor Swift; but away from the end of legwarmers (and rolled-up jacket sleeves), GDP has more than tripled from $3.5 trillion as household incomes, home prices, and employment have shifted dramatically but not equally...

I don't see drones.
They are invisible :)
Okay I was there in 1983 - not representative.
Moreover, the average man/woman of today would have tattoos covering 30% of the body and numerous facial piercings.
In 1983 there were jobs that paid money.

"Your best friend is your handler."
I cannot believe we are at a place in time where I heartily chuckled at that.

Anybody remember that song back in the early 80's "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades"
~~~
Question: What was that guys name again, & what ever happened to him anyway?
Don't have a clue what happened to them, but it were "Timbuk3" in 1986:
The future is so scary....I've got to wear shades.
No one can see your eyes screaming behind the cheap sunglasses.
I don't know but I wear my sunglasses at night.
Crazy, that guy actually has integrity and stuff...
Well, unless you bought bitcoins... Then you most certainly are a 'member'...
imo, the big change began more recently, though somewhat prepped from 1980 on.
as mr. kunstler notes below (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-04-23/guest-post-weve-dug-pretty-damn...):
It’s especially remarkable that a nation with fairly deep traditions of free thought and speech, with durable institutions for purveying them (a free press), should sleepwalk into a captivity of pervasive, systematic, institutionalized lying and fraud. The people of Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia suffered under such regimes at gunpoint, with boots on their necks, but in the USA of Bush and now Obama, we have conveyed ourselves to very similar circumstances willingly, like little children skipping through the gates of Disney World, with gleeful disregard for the consequences.
...we have conveyed ourselves to very similar circumstances willingly, like little children skipping through the gates of Disney World, with gleeful disregard for the consequences.
More like a small wimp, looking around for which bully's gonna try to take our lunch munny...
... and a guy with a GED looked forward to a fairly comfortable living. If he was married to a hard-working, frugal woman, then she didn't have to work outside the home, and they could enjoy home-grown meals.
"hard-working, frugal woman".
What's that?
A barbarous relic.
Strange game nowadays.
The only way to win …
"frugal" = women without a kid
"hard working" = women who can cook at home
most women working now to pay
30% TAXES
30% childcare to have your kids raised by strangers
20% retirement
10% cost of being an employee (cars, clothes)
10% student loans
basically they contribute nothing to additional to the family
and the ones that have enough income are not wife material but more of a business partner.
Ah well. In 1983 those were the chicks I was fucking in my old man's conversion van.
1983? I can't even remember 1983. I can remember 1969 like it was yesterday: Led Zeppelin, Woodstock, Apollo moon landing, I was 17, Daytona Beach, surfboard under one arm, hot chick in the other........
Then there's this looooong blank space. I see this old guy with a streaked beard, white hair at his temples, a dazed look on his face. I'm looking in the mirror. The hot chick is still there, except......her boobs are three inches lower.
Cars had fins .....now bankers have em'
Why do you assume the child care is her cost?
Coz it's "assumed" that guys must pay for dinner, flowers and shit.
Whoever pays for anything, just because someone else "assumes" that he has to, clearly doesn't deserve better.
I pay for dinner, flowers and shit precisely because I think 2013 is shit; shitter than 1983 which was shitter than 1963 which was shitter than 1923 which was shitter than 1803, which was shitter than a sunny day in civilised Athens 503 BC.
If you decided yourself to pay for these things it is absolutely okay, no matter why.
Lebens, there is something in what you say. I don't know that every age is progressively worse than the last; I think civility ebbs and flows with the times and the Zeitgeist, but I'm only 60. What do I know?
But in this era, some things have certainly gone downhill, and civility and respect for women have utterly collapsed. You don't expect too much in the way of enlightened attitudes toward womenfolk in North Waziristan; but here in the West we allow unspeakable abuse. We send mothers of young children into combat; we pressure women who don't want them into abortions, for economic reasons; inflation has pushed women out into the workforce, where few of them really want to be; we tolerate prostitution and the hideous porn industry. We really, truly suck.
And by "we", I mean the "People are production units" corporate bankster machine, which the rest of us tolerate and support with our taxes and fees and our participation in the Paper Money fraud.
Paying for dinner and flowers, etc is a way of saying something very Last Century: Not, "You can repay me by banging me later on", but "I bring flowers, pay for dinner and treat you with respect, and I'm more than repaid with the pleasure of your company." A concept that's lost on a lot of the dicks that are running around with small brains attached.
Hard to tell, until you've seen one that's been married for 10 or 20 years. Hell, I can't think of one woman I admire who's under 50. A man is stupid to get married today. A woman is stupid not to get married.
@ kaiserhoff
You're so right. I'd add in 1983, you'd get into a bar room fight, cops are called, each guy is asked if he wants to press charges, both answer negative, and the cop says "Okay. Both of you assholes get outa here and don't let me see you again."
Today....it's like a federal fuckin' felony.
1983 i owned a bar -- bar business was good --made a shitload of money-- never called the cops in 17 years, always settled everything internally.
Don't want to own a bar today -- cops and .gov make it not so fun
Yep..
Law enforcement needs a constant stream of bodies passing through the system in order to maintain it - hence people are arrested and processed even if the situation could have been resolved without arrests being made - as in your example.
1983 - average IQ = 100
2013 - average IQ = 90
wutz a IQ?
GO 'WAY!!! 'BATIN!
And he tawks like a fag
Don't worry scrote, there are a lot of 'tards livin' really kick ass lives.
You mean "scro" as in scrotum.
The error in your observation seems rather ironic given its subject.
Let us recall that "When modern IQ tests are devised, the mean (average) score within an age group is set to 100 and the standard deviation (SD) almost always to 15" sourced from wikipedia because I'm lazy.
We'll give you the benfit of the doubt though and assume perhaps you meant the mode rather than the mean.
'Americans' are 'american'...
Citizenism is hypocritizenism.
That is indeed that.
But that is not to be conflatulated with the other thing, which is the mattering thing, which bears the nub, the very crustiest bit of it.
I hope you two realize that AnAnonymous is actually more than one person posting under that moniker. I've noticed some striking differences in writing style that cannot be explained any other way!
.
Expect loads of AnAnonymousity, denial, misrepresentation just to avoid taking responsibility.
Don't expect admittance by Chinese citizenism citizens, it would be self indiction.
There is proness to truth in such analysis. Evertheneverless, could possibly have explainings sourced in this AnAnonymous guy on occasions willingfully discontinuating regimen of psychiastrics medications. Without regimen of such to easen symptomatically the delusionarity, fantasical absurditations blob up into extremic insanitation.
Parallely one notices his anti-'american' rantings become quite less the cogenter.
I am obligationalized to bestowing the metaphorical "+1" upon your head simply for your "everthenevertheless", a classic AnAnonymousism if ever there were such a citizenismistical kind of thing (and there was).
Be that as it may be that may be that, uncanniness of you in channeling the parangong of Chinese citizenism hypocritizenism and semantical murderism is very much up in the clouds, aweness making of the many of us vigorously. Making us shake with the laughings from the profundity of our 'american' bellies.
Ah, the duplicitous comedy. Only an 'american' can expound on such as that.
It's one for the record books, that one is.
"semantical murderism"
Is needing Boris for making comment on brilliance of syntactical misconjugation.
Americans are american - and pies are pies! American Pie (Don Mclean of course!):
He's obviously speaking about the relative mean IQ between populations - namely then and now - you pretentious twat. The Flynn effect and its reversal are measurable and documented.
May I complicate matters somewhat further: An IQ is nothing more than what is measured by an IQ-test ... think about that ...
where's Jason Bieber? Kim Karsplashian? Idols? Corzine? Rehypothecation?
[oops, I mean Honorable Corzine.]
Sean Cassidy ~= Justin Beiber
Farah Fawcett ~= Kim Karsplashian [sic]
Three's Company ~= Idols
Michael Milken ~= Jon Corzine
Hidden Fraud ~= Rehypothecation
You're on to something there, Stycho. And in each case, the appallingness is metastasizing.
And until shortly before today there was Jobs that paid money.
Too soon?
And money is.....?
Obesity was not common in 83.
Real food was commonly available in 1983.
Fags were still in the closet.
rock hudson made a revelation, unintended of course.
LOL, a half gallon of ice cream was actually a half gallon, and everyone KNEW what a half gallon was.
I miss buying five pound coffee cans.
In 1983, I also knew how much a lid was, and that there were 28 grams in an ounce. The only gold I was worried about came from Colombia or Acapulco.
sure you do...look again and the production part of employment....construction, fisheries...you know the stuff that takes man to actually produce product....the stuff that creates wealth.....so it looks to me that administrative and paper moving jobs are how we do it now...
I'm guessing that a majority of the 15 trillion in debt thats been created since then went to support the paper shufflers. NOT sustainable.
government jobs in '83 vs now?
100:1 just like paper gold contracts.
You're not supposed to.
I'll take the 80's, hairbands, leg warmers, real boobs, all of it.
Leg Warner's were fucken awesome.
Reluctantly.
I thought we'd have flying cars by now. Do you remember the stories that were told about how cool the year 2000 would be?
...oh yeah, and I was world champion!
Remember Back to the Future 2? Which showed what life would be like in 2015, two years from now. We do not have flying cars, home fusion reactors, hover boards, self sealing boots and clothes that dried themselves. We basically have the same shit we had back then. That movie did accutately predict though that society would become less forgiving and more repressive. Kids who fucked up were convicted to long prison terms and not given a second chance. Just like it is now.
Back to the Future 2 promised me that the Cubs would win the World Series in the year 2000. As a lifelong Cubs fan, I'm still wai..... fuck it.
1983, the beginning of the bubble...
Since 1983 : more women in government... more statism... what a surprise... not.
lolmao500, +100 to you. Of all the graphics above, the female members of congress is the most stark and the most telling.
"Republics are austere, august, temperate and masculine, but when they decay into democracies they become vulgar, base, irrational, feminine..." ---Taylor Caldwell
Women getting the right to vote was a sad day. Little did they know that they hastened the demise of the republic.
Kinder, Kirche, Kuche.
I'm so glad the male relatives in my life when I was growing up taught me fishing, shooting, and a love of the outdoors. The three things you mention are wonderful when they serve as supports within a free and inquiring home, and not as walls to enclose and imprison another within someone else's construct.
Sometime in the '60s I marked woman's suffrage as the beginning of the end, before Federal Reserve, before policy positions had to be 'softened' to accommodate the women voters. I've been very unpopular for a very long time.
Let me guess; you guys are all in your 50's, divorced and lonely, and wonder why.
Lonely, yes, but I sure as shit know the reason why. Modern women are fucking useless.
Hold on there. Let's not confuse some flannel-shirt wearing, punch-you-in-the-mouth Seattle lesbian, nor some hyperpoliticized Mills College, cut-your-balls-off Andrea Dworkin disciple with "the modern woman."
Then again?
Well I will take offense to this as there is NO right to vote.
It is a privilege bestowed on you, and taken away, by government.
The highest marginal personal income tax was at 50%, which Actor Reagan reduced from 70% three years ago. Besides, pussies were slimmer.
No boobs in '83.
no tanks on the streets either; it happened in 84' /ironic
While long-term capital gains tax was reduced to 20% from 28% in 1983 for capital holders, now is at 0% for those in the 10% and 15% ordinary income tax brackets (read that as non-salaried money class). Progress!~ After all, we were told back then, 'There Is No Alternative.' We can fully comprehend what TINA really means by now.
Obama's ears are not that large.
"Prostitute in 1983: $100 - Prostitute in 2013: $100 - go figure...."
Who would pay more for a 30 year older hore?
@cynicalskeptic
I'll buy all the "top end" Mustangs you got for $31k. The only Mustangs my former employer sells go for well north of $35k.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say he meant a fully-loaded regular Mustang, as in the V8 with wide tires and 5-disc CD. That did cost about $29K-$30K in 2006 if your preordered one and paid their asking price. You're probably thinking of the stuff like the Roush and Shelby variants, though, which are significantly more expensive.
The thing I miss most from 1983 is pubic hair.
They told you it wouldn't grow back if you did that.........
no pubic hair for a 19 year old in good shape - perfect
no pubic hair for a 49 year old - nasty
You don't understand.
Children don't have pubic hair, adults do.
Apparently you don't understand...
I understand that young people have been programmed to shave every hair to sell more razors, shaving cream, and depilatories - and to blur the line between adults and children.
Baaahhh!
Haven't you heard???
IT'S BUSH'S FAULT!!!
I look at the fashion of having one's genital region look like that of an immature man/woman as one more proof of the infantilisation of adults in our society.
I like a well groomed 'landing strip' with some twinkling clit bling to guide me in...
Just kidding about the clit bling. <:O)
2043 : either America has gone through a civil war, wiping out statists and their minions or it's a technological dictatorship...
What will it be America?
1. My money is on WW3 wiping out 90% of the human population. What remains of Human civilization has rolled back to Medievel times. In 2043 there will be no America.
It will be exactly the same as today. The 50s weren't much different than today, no reason to expect things to change.
It will be renamed Oceania.
