On China's Rising Hatred Of The Japanese, And Why The BoJ Just Doesn't Get It

Tyler Durden's picture

It is becoming increasingly evident that Japan is attempting to use monetary policy to paper over the cracks of imploding foreign policy decisions. The 'storm in a teacup' that has brought China and Japan into fierce rhetorical battles over the Senkaku (or Diaoyu) Islands is having far more deep-seated impacts on the people of the two nations - and implicitly their buying habits. Unfortunately for the embattled Japanese - they are the ones in need far more than vice versa. As Bloomberg reports, discrimination against Japanese is increasingly common in China, as the head of China's Honda plant notes, he’s "never worked in a more hostile place." The dispute over the islands is raising resentment with bars and restaurants showings signs at the door saying, 'Japanese are barred from entering.' "Wherever I go, like department stores or in taxis, people ask me whether I am Japanese," and the reaction can be frosty. Simply put, no matter how cheap the Japanese make their cars by explicitly devaluing their currency, the largest auto market in the world (that of the Chinese) will not be buying; summed up rather bleakly, "I don’t really care about [car] brands,... but there are cars I won’t buy -- the Japanese ones. The reason is simple: Diaoyu."

A sign suggesting no entry for “Japanese” is seen on a notice board posted outside Feng Bo Zhuang diner in Wuhan, Hubei province on April 22, 2013. Asked about the sign, “My boss thinks the Japanese are way wrong on the Diaoyu islands issues, so he decided to put up the sign,” said a manager dressed in a Kung Fu master’s outfit who identified himself only by his family name, Zhong. “It’s also our way of marketing, because Chinese people were all angry.”

Via Bloomberg,

...

Discrimination against Japanese is common in China, according to Yasuhide Mizuno, the head of Honda’s venture in Wuhan, ... says he’s never worked in a more hostile place.

...

Wherever I go, like department stores or in taxis, people ask me whether I am Japanese,”... When he says yes, he said, the reception can be frosty.

Mizuno’s experiences in the city, site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Sino-Japanese war in the 1930s, illustrate why sales for Honda and Toyota Motor Corp (7203). have yet to recover since violent protests across China seven months ago.

...

Japanese carmakers are continuing to lose share in the world’s biggest auto market.

The future of Japan’s car companies in China “is tied to Sino-Japanese relations, and there isn’t much one company can do through marketing,”

...

“I don’t really care about brands,” Chen said as she checked out the gleaming models on display at the Shanghai Auto Show. “But there are cars I won’t buy -- the Japanese ones. The reason is simple: Diaoyu.”

...

First-quarter China deliveries for Honda, Nissan Motor Co. and Toyota (7203) fell even as overall Chinese car sales rose 17 percent. The share of Japanese brands dropped to 15 percent, versus a peak of 23 percent in 2011, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

...

Japanese expatriates are still turned away from grocery stores, but not as often as before, he said. The Wuhan Tianwaitian Golf Country Club is always booked when he tries to reserve a tee time, he says, though it’s better than simply being told Japanese aren’t welcome on the course, as was the case a few months ago.

...

“I hope relations will improve so we can have a better business environment.”

...

But with Japanese government officials again visiting the Yasukuni Shrine -- a ritual seen in Korea and China as tantamount to paying homage to war criminals -- the automakers and their employees continue to suffer collateral damage.

...

Mizuno said. “This is a tough time for us to live in China.”

Not going to happen unless the BoJ starts printing steel and oil. Significant labor cost reductions are unlikely, unless the Japanese start paying their workers in the US or China in yen. And it seems unlikely even Japanese people costs (whether wages or pensions) will fall much behind their inflation rate, which will rise. The social outcry wouldn't fly there.

Their QE is an across-the-board default on crushing debt, mostly at the government level but with corporate debt along for the ride. Good luck trying to roll that over once investors catch on though. The rates should be awe inspiring.

This, in part, comes from skin color.

Chinese culture associates dark skin with lower classes who work in the fields.

This is why light skin is a symbol of beauty in that part of the world. The Chins don't use tanning beds.

Having lived all over the region, I have a hell of a lot more respect for the Filipinos that I do the Chinese.

They are far more honest and friendly.

Their fighting styles such as Kali and Silat are ruthless and deadly compared to that emerging from China.

Ah, a good 'american' thread.

The capacity of 'americans' to process any event through their 'american' mantra is unmatched. The world must revolve about their conceptions. Apart from that, it is not an 'american' world.

This on an article reporting about growing frictions between China and Japan.

Concordly, one could think that Japanese are darker skinned than Chinese to match the 'american' claim.

Oh, wait, are Japanese? Dont ask the question.

Any situation must be processed through an 'american' guide lines. As 'americans' have raised racism in an institution, everyone else must do the same, even when it goes against the most obvious fact. After all, 'americanism' is human nature. So 'americans' say.

Racial hatred among Asian ethnic groups is far, far worse than most Americans realize....

actually the manipulation of racial frictions amongst them is far more prevalent than most anyone realizes...

stoking the divisions between groups whose natural inclinations are to compete peacefully through trade not war has been a specialty of the 'far-eastern' foreign policy experts of the moneychanger caste since the days of the EIC...divide n rule...dissimulate an conquer! Most of what is happening now is China re the Japs is a policy-driven outgrowth of the kinds of pressures Japan has lived under since 1945...western spooks playing their strategic games for gains...

as two of the increasingly few cultures not mongrelized by mixing of peoples that more often than not...just doesn't work out...(cf. North Merika)China and Japan are on the short list for extermination. Cultural and racial hegemonists (cf. tiny terrorist statelets with massive WMD stockpiles)are always unhappy to see barriers to their successful infiltration of societies to parasitize and pillage.

On a recent visit, I had the opportunity to enjoy a stay at a Japanese built, and formerly owned hotsprings resort in China...now popular with the moneyed-class of Chinese. Gone was any whisper of "Japan"...but the aesthetic impulse and style remained the same. It got me to thinkin...

Long time gone, Buddhism flowed from India, over the Kunluns to Kashgar, the Gobi, and onto China...then Korea...and Japan...influenced(as in enriched!) at each stage by the cultures it encountered, and sent onwards -...this time the dedication to design and production excellence of the Japanese is a powerful spiritual influence flowing back west in appreciation of the powerful spiritual legacy given over to them centuries past outta Shakyamuni's sojourns.

Now the flow is simply returning home...step by step...to once again enrich each other...if the parastical pharaseutical powers that own the west can be simply made to leave them alone!

Japan is an 'american' forward base. While 'americans' can not bear a military encroachment off their coasts(see Haiti or Cuba), it is expected that the Chinese will see the flare.

Amusingly enough, it must be reminded that the Japanese People voted in that government to end the US American occupation of the island. But US Americans simply did not listen to the demand of the Japanese People. The Japanese minister in charge of ending the occupation was fired and the island is still occupied.

Once again, the whole inconsistency of the 'american' social engineering is once again knocking at the door.

Now if 'americans' residing in certain countries of Asia want to take the 'american' path, they need to take the 'american' route of social engineering: find their Indians and Negroes so that it is more profitable to gang up on those Indians and Negroes rather than going against each other.

Abe Denies Japan Invaded Asian Neighbors

In a further lurch to the far right, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told lawmakers on Tuesday that he does not believe Japan's occupation of other Asian countries during World War II can be considered "invasions."

Not a word from Obama... What's next... Merkel saying the Nazis didn't invade France or Poland, they just went there on vacation??

A Chinese white paper on defense, released on Tuesday, falls into this category and now demands our attention, because it omits a promise that China will never use nuclear weapons first.

And today EST is April 25 in NKorea, it's ARMED FORCES DAY... they could launch missiles... or April 31, when US drills ends...

A LOT is going on in Asia...

Come on, good old honest Abe is behaving the 'american' way.

Japaneses are 'american'. Just like the other 'americans', they have a unalienable human right to deny everything, especially the most obvious fact. How could they be 'american' if they could not behave that way?

Just the same way US Americans denied they stole the land, or fabricate stories to claim that their colonialization process has been benefitial.

'American' must do 'american' things to be an 'american'.

How else could they express their eternal 'american' nature?

Ah, again,the topic of passion.

It is about loving, hating etc

How 'american'

The observation of the permanent use of denial as done by 'americans' has nothing to do with loving/hating something.

It is only a basic observation.

'Americans' denial of the most obvious fact is to make a statement, a statement about who is the boss and who is not. It is about domination.
'Americans' are hooked on power and domination. At this point of history, either they manage to cling to that or they disappear. There is no way back.

Japanese are so 'american' that usually 'americans' accept to blatantly lie on geography to tell of Japanese as 'americans'.

So often, Japanese are told as being part of the western world when it is so obvious Japan is located in the eastern world.

But since western world is meant to mean 'american' world in an 'american' mouth...

The fantasy is to report Japan as a western world country.

The reality is to report Japan as an 'american' country.

But, hey, another sign of the 'american' addiction to fantasy.

That's correct. The Massacre at Nanking, China,  is just one example. It occurred around other parts of China.

on December 13, 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. During this period, hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers were murdered by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army.[1][2] Widespread rape and looting also occurred.[3][4] Historians and witnesses have estimated that 250,000 to 300,000 people were killed.

No reputable historian ever estimated anywhere near 300,000 people were killed.  Certainly no reputable source for that number has ever been produced (do not bring up the Tokyo Trials, those proceedings were a joke by any measure).  Chinese love to harp on about what Japan did to them but can't seem to remember how many died in their own internal caziness.  Pure bullshit.  Saying 300,000 dead is like saying the British killed 10,000 in the Boston Massacre or  ten million Jews were killed in the Warsaw ghetto...  horseshit.

I do not know what the numbers were but it was really bad. I learned that nearly half a million soldiers were in China after we took down the home islands. I tried to find out what happened but history books never mention it. I asked some Chinese and most had nothing to say about it except that Mao and Chang Kai Shek did not care about them and went after each other. If there was really so much bitterness you would have thought that none would have made it out of the country alive but there is no record of any fighting except some help for the Russians in Manchuria. If a half million were killed, you would think there would be copious records.

My understanding is that Mao managed to starve 42 million Chinese peasantry in just three short years between 1959-62 than the Japs ever dreamed to kill during their eight-year-short war with Chinks. And Mao was less harmful than the Japs to the Chinks?

Thu, 04/25/2013 - 02:13 | 3496388 vato poco
vato poco's picture

No, but Mao just starved 'em. Sacrifices to his insane ego - China's history is full of mad Emporers, and Mao was no exception. Unlike the japs, though, Mao at least didn't a) conduct medical experiments on women & children b) practice vivisection of live prisoners in the name of "research" c) breed thousands of bubonic plague rats, and turn them loose in a chinese city - resulting in (est) 50,000 horrible deaths.

It os conceivable that history may someday partially excuse Mao's atrocities as a function of his insanity. Hell, the goddamn commies in Russia are already starting to re-erect the old Stalin statues. The japs......nope. It wasn't personal with them - just business. So which is worse? Raw numbers or the most evil motive?

Some entries from my series on Quotes for Times of Financial Instability.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Human sickness is so severe that few can bear to look at it. But those who do will become well.” - Vernon Howard

It’s bizarre that we are all marching towards the guillotine with eyes wide open. We can hear the sobbing. We can smell the blood and as we get one step closer to the executioner we’re still asked to leave a tip in his jar. These are indeed some strange times we live in.” – Anonymous

It’s all more evidence of the intractable nature of the problems facing the world today, when those supposedly in charge cannot allow themselves to admit even the most obvious truths that strike anyone with open eyes right away. The US is as corrupt as the governments it is supporting. It is going to bankrupt itself in the process. It is going to destroy the dollar. It is destroying freedom in the US. And the average American is going along with all of it, just like the average German did in WWII.” – Doug Casey

The danger is not that a particular class is unfit to govern. Every class is unfit to govern.” - Lord Acton

Between the ages of 1 to 20 years, nearly half (49.2%) of all American children will, at some point, reside in a household that receives food stamps.” - Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, 2009 (It’s more now.)

With food stamp use at record highs and climbing every month, a program once scorned as a failed welfare scheme, now helps feed one in eight Americans and one in four children.” - New York Times, 2009 (It’s now one in 6.5 Americans)

If the citizenry cannot replace a dysfunctional government and/or limit the power of the financial Aristocracy at the ballot box, the nation is a democracy in name only.” – Charles Hugh Smith

The situation is like this: they hired our parents to destroy this world, and now they’d like to put us to work rebuilding it, and, to add insult to injury, at a profit.” - The Invisible Committee, The Coming Insurrection

This is the new America. It is an America where economic and environmental catastrophes converge to trigger systems breakdown and collapse. It is an America divided between corporate predators and their prey. It is an America that, as things unravel, increasingly sacrifices its own.” - Chris Hedges, Katrina, All Over Again

Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by assholes.” – William Gibson

The terrible danger at the heart of our society is that the tests are giving way. We are altering, not the evils, but the standard of good which is the only standard by which any evil can be detected and defined.” – G. K. Chesterton

Tis the times’ plague, when madmen lead the blind.” - Shakespeare, King Lear

As the collapse becomes palpable, if human history is any guide, we like past societies in distress will retreat into what anthropologists call “crisis cults.” The powerlessness we will feel in the face of ecological and economic chaos will unleash further collective delusions, such as fundamentalist belief in a god or gods who will come back to earth and save us.” – Chris Hedges

I was a close acquaintance with one (room mate) young lady from China.  She used trickery to get her. Shifty and willing to commit crimes to get rich is what I observed.

One-child policy may have created a generation of spoiled brats in China.  Her parents talked to me on Skype with her interpreting; very humble and polite, he was an artist who had to be in the military and work in labor rather than practice at his gift.  She spent a year in the military, working in the field and getting to know physical discomfort first hand, fatigue, working in adverse elements, hunger, pain.

Yes.  She had high hopes and her dreams are to be accomplished here, very confident, it was like Christmas for her everyday just being here.  She was a bit like a bull in a china shop.  When we were doing the dishes, she had a long blade inher hand and was washing it with her fingers, I guess washclothes are rare in China?  Anyway, she was moving her fingers up and down the sharp side of the butcher knife, looked up at me slowly and smiled.  Creepiest thing I ever saw.  I had to get her out of here.  And I am a Canadian by the way.  (Her:  Americans...Canadians...same thing)

You'll not get a 30 day notice for the debt collectors.  It's not going to happen like that.  The seriousness of this situation and the heavy security which shows clear contempt toward all of us, should make one look beyond this and see if there is a strategy being put into place.  I am probably wrong.  But it'salways best to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.  That's what I would do.  You have to look at common ground, goals and who owes who.   This is a very precarious position for any nation.

The US has never ended the military occupation of Japan, and still holds strong influence over Japan's foreign policy.

US policy (Asian pivot) is to have Japan re-arm (with weaponry purchased from the US).

A depreciating Yen benefits US financial interests. Keeps the dollar looking "stronger" relatively. Japanese products cheaper. US indebtedness to Japan diminished.

NWO will fix all of this hatred and prejudice. We will all be one human family. It will be just like in the USA, one big melting pot. (or is it really a pressure cooker?)

Debka reports today that 500 Europeans are fighting in Syria - Can someone define European for me.

Thank God for thje Globalists! Just like in 1984-all we have to do is obey and they won't torture and kill us. Now we may have to share our wives and daughters with Party officials -but that's a small price to pay for security and a bowl of soup and potatoes each day. What a deal!

History matters. Consider reading about Japanese 1931  invasion of MAnchuria and 1937 'rape' of Nanking". For starters.

Then look into WW2 Japanese Unit 781  biological ressearch  intended to produce selective effects on particular races of beings [whose research directors were forgiven their war- crimes in exchange for their research results turned over to US Navy representatives].

Memories matter.
