Weaponized America: Sturm, Ruger Backlog Doubles; Gun Production, Shipments Surge

Tyler Durden's picture

Whether it is due to the recent governmental attempt to enforce assorted gun controlling measures in the aftermath of the Newtown, CT shooting, or, merely driven by the same catalyst that saw a surge in gun sales four years ago, namely the presidential election, one thing is certain: America is weaponizing itself at an unheard of pace, with both Sturm, Ruger shipments and units produced surpassing 500,000 each in one quarter for the first time in history.

Shipments:

Units Produced:

Shipped and Produced - over 1 million in one quarter for the first time ever:

* * *

But the biggest shock is the backlog of guns on order (orders which RGR could not satisfy in the current quarter).

At over 2 million for the first time in history, a 40% increase from the prior quarter, and nearly a 100% from a year ago, when it comes to getting guns, American just like Cypriots in need of cash, have just one option: get in line.

If we didn't know better, we would say that either RGR has somehow become a $0.99 app for the latest and greatest cool, faddy cell phone, whatever that may be, or, alternatively, America is preparing for war.

Good, but do not leave the mags loaded for more than a month at a time or you will weaken the magazine springs and they will take a "set" and begin to fail

You need to take physics class again. Springs are worn by loading and unloading. Storing them loaded has no effect on the spring. That is a myth.

A lot of the classes call them "28 round mags".  You can believe it or not.

You're correct that loading and unloading a spring will degrade it faster than a constant load, but any loaded spring will degrade over a time.  That's one of the reasons you should lift a car and put in on blocks when storing it for a long time.

In knightowl's defense, I believe you are all wrong.  From a physical perspective, if you keep a spring loaded it will wear out.  I don't know where you get your information from.  I have four sets of magazines labeled spring, summer, fall, and winter.  And rotate them seasonally.

Unfortunately, too many people get their information from the internet, or its paper equivalent, as opposed to experience.  There is an intellectual (with scientific backing) argument that a spring under constant and designed tension won't degrade, but there are a lot of prerequisite "ifs" built into that argument. Whereas, IF one has made a replacement magazine spring from raw steel (or any spring)- this becomes apparent.

Buying QUALITY magazines, keeping DIRT, WATER, & CORROSIVES out of the magazines, and not OVERLOADING the magazines  has very practical benefits (trying to cram that 31st round into a 30 round magazine, even by accident has serious consequences over time), just as rushing to dinner and throwing that dirty rifle back in the gun safe after a trip into the field on a wet muddy day of firing corrosive ammunition has very negative effects, and not just on spring life.

Cycling magazines once a month is probably a bit much, but then so is twice a year for smoke detector batteries- but a schedule represents discipline and is better then "whenever" "whatever" or "however" - so to each his own.

One ammo maker (Bishop, a small outfit in CA) says demand is through the roof, the only brass they can get is pricey (starline), they are scrounging for bullets but have stock, and propellant is hard to find, but they have stock.  They are working 3 shifts to try and meet demand, but can't.  She said there's no word from the gov on making it scarce, just way more demand than her outfit can provide.

I'm fat - I'm a gunsmith and do my own reloading.  If you care, you should get a dillon, say an RL-550b, some supplies, and get with it.  Sooner or later you'd have to anyway, so why not start now, or better, a few years ago, when buying 10k primers and 8 lb powder jugs in quantity was cheap and easy?

You'd be an idiot to depend on something so easily shut down...Oh, that's right, you don't grow your own food either, right?  Or mine your own gold, or make your own bio fuel.  But some things rate a little higher...just in some opinions of course.

Anonymouse - Of course, thanks to DHS you can't find any ammo....

That's okay. Neither can the state police. Ran into a State Trooper carrying ammo in a open box. I held the door for him. When I saw what he was carrying I told him, "Oh, you managed to find some ammo? Where?". He told me that he had to travel to four different gun shops just to get the little he had. He didn't have much in the box. Maybe 1000 rounds of 9MM at most.

1000 rounds is quite a bit actually, unless that was for the whole department. A case of 1000 is pretty hefty.

I started stocking up 2 years ago and am pretty well set, but I picked up another 1000 rounds of 9mm couple months ago at a gun show. It was the very last case, at double the usual price. The gun show opened at 9:00 am on the opening first day and I carted off the very last case of 9mm at 10:00 am.

Get what you can when you can.

I have been watching backpage.com in the Phoenix area closely on ammo sales from flippers. The weekend before last we had our big monthly gun show Crossroads of the West at the Phoenix fairgrounds where they always go. Come Sunday and following week I saw a huge increase of ammo for sale by flippers who most likely went to the gun show and bought a bunch to resell. This week the ammo supply is back down significantly.

Progressive proposals to eliminate borders and allow unlimited immigration (with promises of food stamps, free schools, medicaid, section 8 housing) with no work or skills requirments may encourage some Americans to buy arms. Many immigrants bring the worse kind of background that destoryed their home country. CA is a test model of a State following open immigration and there are plans to bring it to your city and state. 10 to 20 million new voters in the Democratic/progressive party will ensure implementation of the progressive agenda as a one party corrupt union run system, just like CA.

Concur completely.  The Russian made line of AKs are superior in every imaginable way on the battlefield, except for long distance accuarcy.  However, with most engagement taking place at less than 100 metres and a large part of that at less than 25 metres, long distance accuarcy over 200 to 300 metres is not really all that important.

I'll keep my AR's and my Carbon 15 (full auto).  You keep your AK's, or actually SKS's, since an AK is full-auto and there are very few real ones out there.  I own a shooting range.  Maybe russian made ones are great, wouldn't know= but what comes here jams, fails to even get inside 3" at 70 yards.  I'd feel safe at 100 with you shooting at me with one - because it's only going to take me one shot, and you're done with.

Last gun show (and I'm a 'smith) there were tons of overpriced AR's and zero buyers...everyone knows what they are worth and it ain't 2.5k.

I spend a helluva lot less time having to monkey with either my AK or SKS at the range (actually none at all) compared to the AR-15 guys, but of course your mileage may vary. I'd rather have a bolt gun for distance anyhow.

While I won't down vote your post (as a fellow AR owner) I will say that I'm sick of the stupid pissing match between AR and AK owners...it's ridiculous!

Are ARs more accurate than AKs? Yes, but both are plenty accurate for engagements within 200 yards (and 3" at 70 yards is 4.28 MOA, which I think is a bit of a stretch even for lower quality AK variants...but even so would still give you combat effective hits at 100 yards).  Is 7.62x39 more powerful than 5.56x45?  Yes, but both rounds will shoot you dead with a decent hit.

Both are excellent platforms (as are a number of other rifles).  I highly doubt if someone is shooting at you, you're going to feel more confident because you're holding one and they're holding the other.

The newer models have a heavier barrel which helps some. My older stainless model never had a problem but I never tried to get it that hot. AR-15s get hot too if you really try. You probably won't want to maintain a firing position for long enough to worry about heat. Small squads need to keep moving, allowing some time to cool things down.

The most hilarious thing to come out of all this is, companies—composed of firearm manufacturers, gunsmiths and sporting goods retailers, cutting off state government purchases (take a bow Govenor Cuomo) which passed insane state gun laws on its citizens.

I think New York is still trying to "fix" its gun law that made its own cops carrying an AR-15 (or other Evil Looking Black Gun ™) illegal...lol.

Being an upstate New Yorker for many years, I can tell you that the guv's new law hasn't been taken seriously and won't be by 90% of the population. Counties and Sheriff's depts. have issued proclamations denouncing it and/or saying they will not enforce it.

The guy is nothing but a socialist, just like his father. No wonder the downstate liberals love him.

I'm really good with a slingshot at fifty feet, so, personally, I don't really give a rat's ass.

The problem is that the NY laws are now on the books and can be used against you, like the guy who got jailed for empty 30 round AR-15 mags they found in his trunk during a traffic stop. It's not right that you can do serious jail time for a box with a spring in it. This is political bullshit from Cuomo who wants to be considered as a presidential candidate. His problem is the same one Chris Christie has as did Giuliani before them, they won't get any support West of the Catskills.

If only Ruger could make a gun that did not completely suck.  I know, I have very high standards.  I'm even angry with S&W for their quality problems.  Ruger once made some very decent police revolvers.  Also, I know the LCP is very popular, but I looked at every little pocket .380 there is and a) none of them are reliable and b) if you really need a gun, that damn little piece of crap is going to be a huge disappointment such that you would be wishing you had a knife instead.  I don't think the people buying these little pistols have any clue how bad they suck.  Some of them are really rough on your hand, too!

One good thing about a standard Ruger Mini-14 is that the regular carbine has a wooden stock and is not going to be banned in repressive states like Maryland. Only the versions that look like AR-15s will be banned.

.380 +p hollow point should be sufficient. I feel quite comfortabe carrying my .380 Kel-Tec (Crimson Trace is a must for this pistol) when I'm out jogging or biking.

I usually carry a .45 cal Glock 30SF.

I love Rugers as they are very reliable The only thing with Ruger pistols is that they  have a lot of "California Safety's" on them. Their SR 1911 isn't sold in CA because Ruger chose not to put a magazine safety in it. The Springfield line is also an excellent choice...I've owned some of those too, But I just lost everything in a tragic boating accident.

Yes, the loaded chamber indicator is the only ugly part of the MKIII and one reason to choose a MKII instead.

Scuba classes are in order for me as well. Boating accidents are all to common where I live and there isn't even that much water!

I carry a Kel Tek P3AT. It is reliable, It is also a couple of ounces lighter than the LCP.

Yes, I realize the .380 has half the muzzle energy of the 9mm, but the P3AT is small enough and light enough that it goes everywhere with me. IMHO, a .380 pistol is a lot better than a knife.

I don't know know a lot about gun engineering, but I can agree that the LCP 380 has a "weird" feel when firing. Sometimes I get pain between the thumb and forefinger afte a lot of rounds. However, I really like it, very lightweight, no misfires on the range or anything, and I load with crticial defense for extra stopping power. It's a BUG for me anyway I carry a glock 34 as my main weapon, BUT, becuase of the 380's lightweight, my wife now carries it all of the time, whereas sometimes she would leave behind her Glock 26 becuase it felt too heavy in her smaller purses.

I had a friend who bought a Walther PPK like Bond had or still has.  It pinched you real bad between the thumb and forefinger.  I think some other .380's are like that. Weird.  Any gun beats having no gun when you need it.

Yeah exactly there will be plenty of surplus guns to be had for free when the shtf when Johnny-come-lately finds out that being Rambo like in the movies gets you killed real quickly. You ain't taking on the paramilitary keystone cop brigade head on with your AR-15 by yourself and living to tell the tale with no formal combat training. You'd be better served with a shot gun and spread shot in an urban environment like Boston than an AR-15. Just aim low...... and use a pistol or knife to clean up afterwards.

Yeah so do I but you know if people starting openly organizing the DHS/Multi-agency clown show brigade is going to be paraded out more often and publicly to try to keep it from happening. It is not the people fed up that they are concerned about it is those on the sidelines still deciding which side to choose or those blissfully unaware of what is going on they are trying keep in line.

Mon, 04/29/2013 - 21:43 | 3512186 Dewey Cheatum Howe
Dewey Cheatum Howe's picture

Most people obsess on the weapons, tactics and logistics I believe more important. If it is not organized you will have to make due with whatever is available, prepper or not in an urban environment you are going to need to keep a low key, hit and run and blend back into the general populace if you are in an "occupied" area. Having a plan (even if it is far from perfect) and a little ingenuity goes a long way. I'd be using these shows of force as a learning exercise. I hope it doesn't come down to it but like the old saying goes plan for the worst and hope for the best, also hope the cooler heads ulitmately prevail.

Well the paramilitary keystone cop brigade overreacted to try to show they were on top of things for the matrix. A Rambo that actually knows what they are doing will totally embarrass them which means the MSM will be in full information lockdown like there were with Dorner and then afterwards the shows on history channel will be classifying you as a serial killer like they are now with Dorner. Totally ignoring why he did it and pushing he is a serial killer meme to the extreme to hammer the point home in people's heads so they don't sympathize with his actions.
