Middle-Aged Suicide Rate Surges

Tyler Durden's picture

The suicide rate among middle-aged Americans climbed a startling 28% in the last decade as the rates in younger and older people held steady. This period dominated by two stock market crashes, a real-estate crash, and a hyper-repressive Fed saw a stunning 40% surge in the suicide rate among 35-64 year old white men and women (with non-Caucasian rates steady). 39 out of 50 states registered a statistically significant increase in suicide rates among the middle-aged.

Suicide prevention efforts have tended to concentrate on teenagers and the elderly, but research over the past several years has begun to focus on the middle-aged. As AP reports, the CDC report contained surprising information about how middle-aged people kill themselves: During the period studied, hangings overtook drug overdoses in that age group, becoming the No. 2 manner of suicide. But guns remained far in the lead and were the instrument of death in nearly half of all suicides among the middle-aged.

During the 11-year period studied, suicide went from the eighth leading cause of death among middle-aged Americans to the fourth, behind cancer, heart disease and accidents. Today's payrolls data will do little to lift the spirits of the middle-aged worker; we live in cruel and unusual times.

Sometimes I think the best yoga is to stretch to be ready to kiss it goodbye.  You do anyway.

Despite my youthful face and firm, silky-smooth high yellow ass, I am actually a 52-year-old white male.  I'm making good coin at the moment but already wrestled with those demons and have a poor-man's plan bottled and bonded - involving a large stack of not-yet-read classics, a healthy dose of cannabis, blatant welfare fraud and a new hobby as a street corner preacher.

I bust ass like clockwork, no debt, savings etc; the way I see it, if I go down it's Mad Max Time nationwide.  I intend to live through that.

It is a tough world out there for those who do not have the skills to survive and many do not.  When a person sees his or her realities vaporize slowly and the simple things like going to a grocery store to purchase food or buying gas for a car seem like insurmountable tasks due to lack of coin, hope slowly gives way to despair.  I assume many then believe that death is preferable to living here.

Booo hooo!! Why can't we men stay the dominant group forever and just continue to squander the privilege we've been given by oppressing women??

Because we have been beating women into submission through religious, social, and political institutions since.... well pretty much recorded history.  Pendulums swing both ways, maybe being the minority will grant some perspective on how to treat everyone with more dignity.  You can make it easier on yourself by realizing men have done a great injustice to this world under their management and perhaps seeking aid from the other side will benefit humanity.  Or just continue thinking your the minority (fun fact: we are not... yet) and let the dissonance drive you to insanity.  Whatever.

First off, you are a pugnacious asshole. To encourage the debasement of any race or sex is offensive and shows you to be the putrescant puke that you are. Men and women have been in a symbiotic relationship since the dawn of time where men hunt and protect and women gather and child-rear. I think it is wonderful that women are gaining a stronger footing in employment. My wife makes more than me, but it is not rubbed in my face. We live happily and help each other. There have been a few times when I protected her and made her feel safe, whereas she has helped me through my education advances. You know nothing for the benefit of humanity by your utterly childish and unintelligent postulation. Why don't you join the suicide numbers and spare us your attempt at explanation. If for the very least, take it over to Huff Po where you can join the other feminazis. Most men are very caring and respectful of women and other races. Is a woman's place in employment advancing? Yes and it is a good thing. Is it going to happen over night? No. Just like you gaining some fucking sense and not yammering on like a snobby fucking punk that needs his nose broken will not happen over night. Fuck you.

when nations hand out the rules, men get the cultural police role.

it's their duty to keep the "gender roles" intact, which benefits the State hugely - and for this work, they get a few cultural "privileges" - including the lame idea that they're "better than" others. . . intersects with race, so dominant race scores more than "lesser" race'd.

just look at how any prison works, the hierarchy formed, how/why.

any dude that plays into this truly believing that they're somehow better than an other simply because of genitalia/hormones, is a full-on tool in the hands of their prisonguards.

Pugnacious, yeah, I'll give you that.  I'm quite happy to argue established dominant beliefs and systems.  It's too bad you're afraid of what I have to say, recommending I go off to HuffPo.  What are you afraid of?  Me challenging your social dominance?

Breaking noses is the exact kind of bullshit I'm talking about, the typical social engineered masculine response to threat - Violence.  Kind of strong feelings you have there over a simple online conversation.  Ohh, better not talk about those though, or we might be taken for gay... or shemales, or whatever other "feminine-esque" attributes may challenge our masculine identity.  Hmm, why is it so bad for men to emulate feminine characteristics?

I'm glad your wife has a good job, but if you think gender equality is something for the workplace only... well it only shows your narrow perspective.  I realize there has been a symbiotic relationship between the two, and to start perhaps there was equality.  Somewhere on the long road of time, men decided women were somehow less than (How long have women been allowed to vote in the US? As long as men...? - No).  It's been that way for a long time and it's not going to change overnight, no shit.  Nor am I advocating a role reversal, I'm merely remarking the cyclical nature of the human experience - the greatest of teaching instrument ever devised.  Just because the probable outcome is unlikeable, doesn't mean it won't happen.  Though, we do have a choice in the matter, if we choose to cast off the social constructs informing our decisions.

It is the mixing of thoughts and beliefs that betters humanity.  There is a very noticeable bias followers of this blog and I'm going to continue adding my tidbits. Because, well that's what this forum is for.  If you don't like, you don't have to read it.  Go read other comments that confirm your belief system and helps keep your biases alive and well.

you're holding your own here Alpha Monkey, but it's a tough crowd, these ZH'r men. . . still, thought I'd chime in, support a lot of what you're saying (well thought out, all the way down the thread IMHO), and add a couple of truths. . .

Somewhere on the long road of time, men decided women were somehow less than

re-enForced by religious nonsense, most definitely.  Eve-ill temptress uses her sex to keep Man from his God.  but, conundrum, how to make more peoples for the church/state if all the men are robed for their gods?  so let 'em breed, but remember that their purpose is to serve God, and sex is only for making babies. . . culture works with and against religion - creating the necessary guilt over behaviours, assuaged by offerings to the holy men for penance (long history of buying ones way out of sin)

nationstate cultures go fist in glove with FatherGod religions, it's the historic model now.  there's a reason an invading army rapes the enemy women, and that's still the mindset working today, very little evolution if one looks carefully.

and when nations peak, and start that downhill curve, of course it's the men that notice, and bemoan their loss of status - a status that has been artificially created in order to exploit what men are taught they do best, work, make money for taxes, have sex and arm-up for killing other men. . .

if anyone truly believes this is "reality" then yes, I can understand the desire to check out when their perceived status is no more - but all I can say is - adapt to survive, you either surf the change and the dominant storyline, or you hit the water wall. . .

irrespective of your genitalia.

Actually, they're just behind on the curve of oppression (or should I say ahead?).  Now that the 1% used them to oppress everyone that wasn't a member of the rulling class, it's time to start thinning the herd and squeezing the last bit of ripe fruit.

Previously "majority" group members are new to feeling like a minority... and if this chart is indicative of how much that sucks, think about that when you think and say things like "they (whites) have work ethic" implying that Non-whites don't.  Non-whites have just as much work ethic, the difference is nobody has been willing to hire (OPPRESSING) them for much longer, so they've been forced to accept their position (as they had many a Non-Minorities working against them) and had a longer time to become accustomed to the oppression of the "elites".

Please continue thinking "they are lazy" or "they are X" in a dismissive and discriminatory fashion, overlooking the responsibility that Non-Minorities have had in putting them in a position of poverty and minority status... through actions that are shaped by those exact types of sentiments.

The last thing I would want is for you to wake up and realize *Gasp* you may be part of the problem...

So raising a daughter and being a good husband who works 50 hours a week while going to school at the same time, earning a 3.7 GPA and paying for the whole thing by taking no loans is being "a part of the problem"? You state that I have a..."dismissive and discriminatory fashion". I am dismissing nothing. You started this volley with your assumptions on how "elite" folks are punishing minorities first, then whites, when it is minorities who have been offered better chances. Everyone has a chance and blaming others or even taking your own life is a copout. Globally, "Whites" are third in population at 17% compared to Latin and Asian in the top two. Everyone suffers in this environement. It has nothing to do with race, but those taking the brunt are middle aged white males, hence the uptick. Whenever a group experiences an uptick in pain, the suicide rate goes up. This is something you seemingly celebrate which completely undermines any attempt at providing thoughtful conversation. If anyone is "part of the problem" it is you by the mere celebration in other peoples pain. This is staunch sociopathic behavior.

Fri, 05/03/2013 - 13:18 | 3527530 Alpha Monkey
Alpha Monkey's picture

No, I'm pretty sure I clearly stated that thinking things like OPPRESSED peoples are "Lazy" is part of the problem.  Further, I've also pointed out that being a "minority" or a "majority" in social terms, has nothing to do with population count, but the access and ability to use resources, political and economical, in the established society.  And I've also clearly pointed out that it is a CLASS issue, with racial divisions.

Cry me a river.  I've pondered if I am a sociopath, but I clearly feel guilt, regret, and various other emotions with regard to my actions and the effects they have on others as well as being able to empathize with other's pain.  Now here's something you may be interest to know about me.  While I was chasing the great white american dream, I was suffering great emotional pain, with constant thoughts of suicide.  However, instead of offing myself, I decided to investigate and alter my belief system as well as my behavior and lifestyle.  I do celebrate pain because I am familiar with the great transformative power that is contained within.  I suggest you check your just world bias and good/bad dualism at the door and have seat with reality.  I celebrate the fact that much good will come from this because, like I said, pendulums swing both ways.

I'm trying to break any delusions of those holding out that this is a bad dream and there's no way "they" could be a minority (when it's quite clear they are NO MATTER WHAT RACE, as normal citizens do not have say in government and the wealth distribution in america is at all time extremes).  I'm glad I could ruffle feathers.

"From 1999–2000 to 2009–10, the number of degrees earned among U.S. residents increased for students of all racial/ethnic groups for each level of degree, but at varying rates. For associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees, the change in percentage distribution of degree recipients was characterized by an increase in the numbers of degrees conferred to Black and Hispanic students. For doctor's degrees, the change in percentage distribution of degree recipients was characterized by an increase in the numbers of degrees conferred to Hispanic and Asian/Pacific Islander students."

Americans (white americans) did not realizre they were slaves NOW they are figuring it out and they are not accustommned to the designation. Alpha monkey hit it on the head he is correct and everyone is down arrowing him. This is too funny. Using slaves to control slaves. Brilliant.

White america is figuring it out slowly they are the House N's that were used to control the Field N's.

Sucks to be played so bad. And yet, the game continues when you are presented with truth what do the weak minded do try to protect the BS they were taught by grandma and paw paw.

Understand people you got played. Grow up and change how you treat people. You reap what you sow.

I see grocery stores and it is heart breaking.  They are trying to stretch $10 a week for food.  Many are pre Social Security.  Meanwhile I see O voters and illegals with EBT cards with 1 or 2 shopping carts filled with processed foods and other goodies.  It makes me sick.   Shades of the USSR after it fell. Do it carefully.  The body has a host of sophisticated means by which to stay alive.  'You' may intend to eat a bullet served up by a .357 but your body has other ideas and at the last instant jerks the hand slightly and you blow your jaw off.  And survive.

Or you think you O.D. and instead merely kill half your brain.

Honestly people killing themselves is probably good for GDP.  Certianly good for Social Security, and great for jobs (what better way to leave the system than in a box no disgruntled worker here, just a happy soul off to heaven.. lala).  Heck the government is so hopeful in this regards they have 10's of millions of plastic body crates ready for occupation.

Nothing here move along.  Wake me up when the market hits 20000, and suicides/100,000 hit 100.

Whitey is governmentally discriminated against; The government mandates that a major portion of college financial assistance go to minorities and women....Whitey is governmentally discriminated against.  Whitey pays the majority of the taxes with minorities and elderly getting the government handouts, while Whitey gets nothing... Sorry buddy, Johnny Jihad gets free tution, you have to pay double.  Thanks.  Again, governmental discrimination against white men.  Whitey sees it and knows he has no hope, so he just offs himself.

In the country of the blind the one eyed man is king.

We live in that country, one where the feds rip off the middle class to fund the gambling habits of the wealthy in the stock market, seemingly defying gravity.

But no matter how much liberals and the economic fools continue to deny its existence, reality will exert itself.

How do I know this? Because being middle aged I have seen it happen time and time again. The PM Bubble of 1980/81. The Savings & Loan Crisis at the end of the 80s. The Internet Bubble 10 years later. The subprime bubble of 08. Each time people knew things were going wrong, but instead of fighting it they blinded themselves and went along with the crowd.

They think that nothing changes, that fundamentals don't matter, and whisper lies to themselves and others.

But old age teaches that everything changes.

Reality will exert itself. It may not be today or tomorrow. It may not even be next month. But it will come sometime.

And when it does, I'm going to laugh and spit in their blind fucking faces.

The significance in this suicide report is that several other age groups and many ethnic and women’s groups did not show much change. This highlights the fact that it is the economy and the frustration of being the breadwinner and being wiped out that is killing America’s men at a time in their lives when opportunity and rebound are dimming in a hostile national environment.

And perhaps that is why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its analysis fails to report its findings that Suicide among males is four times higher than among females and represents 79% of all U.S. suicides.”

Never mind that the media had access to this fact but chose to ignore it in keeping with its and the government’s campaign of discrimination and hatred toward one of the world’s most productive and fair-minded groups in world history -- America’s white male population -- the vangard of establilshment of the most moral, most equitable society for all peoples of any civilization in history.

Instead of taking credit for their participation in this demonization of white males in order to bleed them dry, the media, and in this case the AP, explains it all away with this bromide: “One theory suggests the recession caused more emotional trauma in whites, who tend not to have the same kind of church support and extended families that blacks and Hispanics do.”

No doubt. I won't lie, I've been on the brink for 5 years. 32, nothing to show for it but burned bridges, failures, mountains of unpayable debt and fractured dreams. All that remains is the cold, empty, harsh reality that I wasn't good enough at life to make it. What keeps me getting out of bed in the mornings and continuing this farcical "life" is nothing more than fear. Not of my own death but of the pain it would cause my family at my funeral.
Got a call from one of the multiple debt collectors after me just yesterday. Told him if I had the money to pay then Id use it instead on a large caliber handgun, but unfortunately I can't afford the bullets. He was a little short on words after that.

You are not alone. Whatever you do, do the priorities first and take care of yourself because this economic model is doomed to failure and soon. And we all need to be survivors and see this fight through because what we all have is too precious to have the tyrants take it from us. It is said by many that offshoring jobs and R&D by the internationalists has been more devastating to America than 9/11.

My roommate from college, a chemical engineer with experience and a master's, is in similar straits after a company downsizing eliminated his job.

And read this, including the comments, from the November issue of Chemical and Engineering News: “BARELY HANGING ON: Unemployed chemists at the middle to late stages of their career are beginning to question their faith in chemistry.” It begins:

Five years after the economic collapse began in the U.S., unemployed chemists are still struggling to find jobs. The unemployment situation is especially dire for mid- to late-career chemists who, instead of anticipating a comfortable retirement, now face the possibility of bankruptcy and financial ruin.

As their life savings evaporate, and their hope turns to desperation, these chemists are beginning to question whether they can continue supporting a field that can no longer support them.

In agreeing to share their stories with C&EN, chemists in these dire circumstances requested anonymity to protect their job search prospects; their names have been changed and some details about their situations have been generalized. This article focuses on chemists who were laid off from the pharmaceutical industry, because that’s one of the sectors where the fallout from the Great Recession has been severe.

The impact of this recession has been unlike that of previous recessions. “The fact is that the number of jobs has declined,” says Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, president of the American Chemical Society. And the usual methods for obtaining a new job aren’t working. “If the jobs aren’t there,” Shakhashiri says, “no matter how much you network, you’re not going to find them.”

Remember, the Tunisian, who basically had an Arab hot dog stand and the powers with their regulation forbid his operation, publically immolated himself in the public square. His defiance and sacrifice basically eradicated Tunisia, Egypt and Libya's dictatorial governments. His act changed the world and time will judge if he changed the world for the good or bad. We do know the powers who stopped him from practicing his craft were likely removed.

Your life is precious. You are precious. We are precious. However, I have the picture of all great American men (the few women died as men) who sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan for our country. When I listen to Eric Holder state that some banks are too large to prosecute ( and many more great examples that all ZHers know), I think they were sacrificed by the powers who are killing Lady Justice and if there was one American principle/symbol these men died, equal justice under the law or Lady Justice would be top on the list. The Tunisian made a point with his life without harming anyone else. We should all be so fortunate to die well even if at your own hands.

But I repeat, we are all PRECIOUS! We should come together and do something together before we execute ourselves!

Choose life.

Choose a job.

Choose a career.

Choose a family.

Choose a big television.

Choose washing machines, cars,

compact disc players, and electrical tin openers.

Choose leisure? wear and matching luggage.

Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fabrics.

Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning.

Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing? junk food into your mouth.

Choose rotting away at the end of it all, in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarassment to the selfish brats that you spawned to replace yourselves.

Choose your future.

Choose life.

I chose not to choose life.

I chose something else.

Choose life.

Choose your future.

Choose life.

there ARE alternatives to the "life" you've been taught to aspire to.  get thinking, get creative, go FREE.

Makes sense for white suicide to be up, considering they have to work to support everybody else.

Makes sense for native suicide to be high, those people have been fucked for generations though some of them do well with the casinos.

Makes sense for black/hispanic suicide to be low considering our society is structured to celebrate and coddle them.

What doesn't make sense is low Asian suicide rate.  I figure it must jump at some point when Asian Americans realize how screwed they are.

Asian American families are very tight-knit; they have this entire cultural and social fabric to fall back on.  My street is almost all Asian (I'm not sure which country or countries), but they utilize multi-generational housing, have frequent gatherings with the neighbor families, you know, have a community.

Of course, the 3 white households don't participate in the gatherings, but I've been tempted to invite myself to dinner, more than a few times.  :)

Whites in suburban neighborhoods do not typically have this cultural fabric.  We have been divided over time, to the point where we don't know our neighbors and don't want to, for fear of being taken advantage of.  It is a life of disconnectedness, because we've been trained since birth to let it be so.  It's unfortunate.

"white" culture is inherently competitive, which does not exactly breed mutual trust, nor maintain ties/bonds.

Instead of killing yourself, which is what the Elite Apes want, take out a few of them. Ever wonder why Terrorists always take it out on the working classes...It's because the terror attacks are largely being done by Elite Ape Govt faggots and faggets.

Is this a surprise to anyone??? The western economy rewards criminal behavior and flogs this exact demographic to death with taxes and burdens and debt. One main reason was their finances were toasted.

At some point, as many have pointed out, this country abandoned all ethics and the rule of law.

And at some point the average Joe sees nothing of importance where they are and what they day. Its a habitrail express to hell.
