Syria Declares Israel Attack An "Act Of War', While Israeli Defense Forces Close Northern Airspace

Tyler Durden's picture

In the aftermath of last night's second attack in two weeks by Israel on Syria, the immediate response has so far been muted, with Syria condemning the aggression as an act of war. According to UPI, Syria "vowed to retaliate after an apparent Israeli airstrike on the capital Damascus early Sunday. A government official said on CNN the attack on a military research facility was "an act of war" that the government would not take lightly. "Syria is a country that does not accept insults and it doesn't accept humiliation," said Omran Zoabi, Syria's information minister. Zoabi added the attack had opened "a wide door for all possible options." It remains to be seen what, if any, option Syria will take or if it will merely jawbone toothlessly, inviting further unrequited air-based incursions into its territory. Most likely any response will need the preapproval, and the assistance, of Putin.

Incidentally, the only response so far has come from Israel. As Stratfor reports, citing Israel News, the airspace in northern Israel has been closed until May 9 due to an Israel Defense Forces directive issued May 5. Which means the only planes flying in north Israel, which borders Syria through the Golan Heights, would be military.

In the meantime, those curious what Israel bombed and why on Sunday Morning, Enduring America has compiled a detailed analysis on the topic.

Early on Sunday morning, huge explosions rocked northern Damascus.

Scientists said that the explosions measured between two and three on the Richter scale, a scale designed to measure earthquakes. Giant balls of fire rose above Mt. Qasioun, a mountain that overlooks the capital and is at the center of Syria's largest military complex. The very symbol of Assad's control over Damascus was on fire.

Immediately, Syrian officials stated that an Israeli airstrike had hit a military installation in the area. Within a short time, unnamed American officials confirmed Israel had struck Damascus, a sign that the US government likely greenlighted the attack.

This strike took place within days of another Israeli airstrike that apparently targeted a shipment of rockets en route from the Syrian military to Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.

Some analysts have said that a stockpile of rockets, made in Iran and bound for Lebanon, was the target of this second strike.

However, this analysis ignores the fact that several important military installations appear to have been the targets of this most recent strike.

The Syrian government claimed that a military research facility was struck (map). In addiion, there have been many videos of the explosions, taken from many different angles, which suggest that a much wider range of targets, across a wider area of the military installation, were struck and not simply a convoy of rockets.

An initial analysis by Stroyful's Félim McMahon suggests that the research facility itself was not hit, but rather the nearby headquarters of the 104th Brigade. Beyond this, videos suggest that huge stockpiles of weapons, likely artillery shells and ballistic/artillery rockets, were also destroyed in the airstrike.

The 104th Brigade is an elite group of Republican Guards tasked with defending one of the most sensitive areas of Assad's defense network in the capital.

The precise locations of the targets are still being nailed down and confirmed, but some insurgent leaders are reporting that an even wider stretch of area was hit:

View Strike near Mount Qasioun (May 5, 2013) @felimmcmahon in a larger map

The 4th Armored Divion is Assad's most important unit, run by his brother, Rifaat Al Assad. If the 4th Armored Division was indeed the target of the airstrike, this is a major blow to Assad and to the regime.

The Israeli airstrike did not target stockpiles of weapons deep in storage.

These are the most important fortresses that the regime maintains, and are instrumental to Assad's ongoing defense against the rebel offensive. These artillery and rockets from this area are used to routinely target insurgent positions, and civilian neighborhoods, all across the capital, from east to west, north to south.

These stockpiles are particularly important to Assad's efforts to retake Darayya, the largest suburb of Damascus which has been at the front lines of the fight for the capital for over six months. There are unconfirmed reports that the 4th Armored Division and the 155th Brigade SCUD missile base were also hit, but even if this is not the case, the Israelis have struck at some of Assad's most important bases, just kilometers from the Presidential Palace.

The message to Assad is clear. If the regime continues to move rockets across the border to aid Hezbollah, Israel willnot only strike at the immediate threat, but will deal serious body blows to the regime, severely hampering Assad's efforts to counter Syria's insurgency.

The question remains, however, as to whether destabilizing Assad was the ultimate goal of this airstrike. At the very least, Israel has proven that it is willing to pick a side and go all in if it feels threatened.

This incident should also permanently put to rest the debate as to whether Assad's air defense is capable of standing up to external threats. Assad is completely vulnerable, and has been dealt a serious blow. As a result, Israel may have completely changed the debate about foreign intervention in a single instant, and may have catalyzed an international drive to remove Bashar al-Assad from power.

I've been hearing about problems in the Middle East since the 1970's. It's endless. Not sure how much of this is America's business. Don't want our troops there. Yes, we should support Israel, but as time has shown, they are the big dog over there and can handle themselves.

Israel had already called up 2000 reserve soldiers for a "surprise drill" in Northern Israel by April 30th ostensibly for "engaging Hezbolla."  This was not mentioned in Western MSM at all but was leaked on a twitter feed April 29th.

you make an interesting point; however I suggest the true meaning is the Afghanistan and Iraq wars plus drone attacks have changed the rules of engagement. The change increase the chance of a major conflict. Once you add the on-going financial crisis, the international social fabric is quickly fraying and straining to hold, but dark forces will soon cause the fabric to be completely torn apart.

With this said, S&P should be up 100 points at the Monday open on the news because this will create immense economic activity per Krugman!

If there is a retaliatory strike against Tel Aviv, it won't be Syrian. It will be Russian.

List of targets:

Herzliya, Mossad HQ

Negev Nuclear Research centre

Nuclear submarine bases in Haifa and Eilat

All military airbases.

All anti aircraft.

Conclusion: If the Russians use naval bombardment,  their navy and aircraft carrier will be vulnerable from subs and air attacks. If they take out the airfields and subs, they might have a chance. But it would not seem like a proportional response to Israel's acts of war. Most prudent course of action would be to take out the nuclear subs quietly then get the UN security council to start sanctions against Israel for dozens of violations from nukes to human rights and military war crimes against civilians.  Highly unlikely with US vetoes in the past, but at least it gets the ball rolling and the nations in the General Assembly may take unilateral action to support Russia. Obummer may be surrounded by AIPAC types, but his real feelings on Israel may be tested.

The biggest hurdle is the zionist media, and I don't have an answer for that part of the equation. To prevent a full scale global nuclear war, it might be wise to support an all out Russian attack on Israel sometime in the near future if Putin can figure out a way to do it. I have often posted that war is the most insane and abhorrent activity known to man, but I have absolutely no qualms about killing murdering thieves and preventing them from ever harming us and others.

First, resources are essential, period.  Second, what would anyone in the region (of mostly starving people - just look at Egypt) do.  Iran is in the best shape out of all these folks.  Alone, Iran does nothing.  The Syrian "circus" has gone on long enough, there is some real work to do here and I say Russia and Isreal will get it done.  The wild card is China, but if the Russians go about their business, so will the Chinese.

The real work involves more of the same mess we left in Iraq. There is no way anyone sane will support another invasion with Israel no less. Putting aside that I personally would never support a nation that has apartheid, murder and theft as national policies, no amount of sugarcoating is going to make the fall of Syria into Israeli hands palatable to anyone on the planet.

The wildcard is the 99% of non-zionists angry enough to take it out on all zionists for starting another war. And I mean at home, not in the ME. There's a boiling anger against Israel's crimes, and worse, that they have never been punished. I just hope it doesn't affect all the decent jewish people who have never supported Israel.

I can't emphasise this enough. Israel is a criminal state, but that alone is not enough for its destruction.  It is a criminal state connected to the global banking ponzi, military industrialists, and mass media that imo committed covert acts of mass murder against the West. I absolutely hate war, but simply for pragmatic reasons alone, these warmongers must be stopped.

Dude, I'm not Jewish, but...

Having dealth with both US Jews and Israelis, I've had no problems with either.  I think I like the Israeli variety better as a personal preference: more worldly, less Madison Ave or Hollywood.  No doubt both have their share of assholes, but I've met a lot of 'assholes' and ignoramuses who are so-called "Christians" right here in the US.

Do I think that Jews had a lock on certain industries?  Yes.  Am I bothered by it?  A little, but not that much.

What bothers me most is that these fashion-label "Christians" seem either unable or unwilling to raise their game or performance and unity to the same level, when groups or cultures compete.  Perhaps it's the persistence of the Frontier culture (not just self-reliance, but also "Screw you, you're on your own!" mindset) that's embedded in American protestanism that makes for a fragmented society that is open to competition from a more unified group.  If so, it is not the unified group that is to blame, but the fragmented group.

The only 'Christian' group I know of that perhaps comes close to the levels of individual and organizational excellence, are probably the Mormons.  Both Jews and Mormons seem to have a commitment to excellence and success that was once more wide-spread among Anglos and Europeans than is today.  My own family's commitment to excellence leads us to be faith and culture blind.

Since Nature and Darwinism takes no prisoners, I hedge and plan accordingly.  I/we don't fear the smart and worldly people - be they Jewish, Asian or European.  We fear the ignorant and hot-headed masses, who can and probably will become the roving Zombies of TV.

well done for pointing out the similars,

freemasonry and a commitment to Zion-ism, combined with copious anti-depressants, will certainly earn perks with the respective governments - Utah data base'd trustworthy spies for the powers-that-be, huge monies funding tiny warmonger state as foothold in a "resource rich" part of the world,

definitely parallels to be drawn now, though in the future shifts will cause those lines to inter-sect, with consequences.

Judaism is the root of the other two monotheistic religions, Christianity and Islam. Both Christianity and Islam acknowledge this. Christianity accepts Christ as a Son of the Father and Muslims accept Christ as one of Gods (the Father’s) prophets, they follow Mohammed as the last of the true prophets as he brought them the message of a loving and monotheistic God. The details of who is what is not nearly as important as humans making true the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. Only then shall they evolve beyond sentient animal creatures that must obey the impetus of tooth and claw and move to higher beings that understand and use spiritual values.

Christ, like all true messengers, risked his life to tell ordinary men that each one is God’s child and can directly seek his approval without the intervention of any earthbound authority. Each of use carry the God fragment within use, popularly called the Soul, and no one puts this spark of eternal life into an entity, but the Father Himself. The Sanhedrin did not like that teaching; it challenged their self proclaimed power as “God’s broker”. Power was their god, not God. Their actions bear that out.

About 740 AD the Khazars adopted Judaism and gained their learning from the scribes of the Sanhedrin. The Talmud of the Sanhedrin continued to evolve under the Luciferian inspiration of the AshkeNAZI Jewish Rabbis’ who considered themselves “chosen” by God and so authorized to rule the goyim subhumans. They have been deceived by Lucifer to believe he is God and have been taught great earth skills, some of them of Gods design, like unity and brotherhood (for the tribe only, not of all the children of God), and other skills of Lucifer’s design, like the art of deception. They think that their organizational skills prove they are Gods chosen and pay no heed to the mischief they engineer in slowing down the evolution of the goyim (who are effectively part of God’s family).

The antichrist is a system of thought planted by Lucifer and made real in the Zionist genius. They are authentically and methodically ruthless, tenacious, and infinitely patient. Read the protocols of the elders of Zion to gain insight into their mindset. Ashkenazi Jews are not all practicing world dominators, but they are almost all complicit tools for the ones who are, and like all humans they will take the free lunch (to be slave masters rather than slaves) if they get it. However there is no free lunch and even if they wreck the world and take it over for a thousand years “what profit a man if he should gain the whole world and lose his immortal soul.”

All this mayhem and nonsense for nothing; it is time for the goyim to wake up and put a stop to these misguided, puerile, and lost children of God. If you don’t awaken, and fail to use the brain and free will God gave you, then you will come under their domination which is really Lucifer’s domination. You have to want God and the freedom that is your creation right. It is not handed to you on a silver platter; that would contradict the principle of free will. Freedom, the expression of free will, is always coveted by potential slavers, Lucifer being the head one around here.

You think God is mumbo jumbo? Free market economics is the invention of no man; it is a naturally occurring expression of the free will which is the best of the individual man, planted in his nature by his Creator, in His own image. Lucifer cannot hope to defeat God on any ground. Lucifer exists at God’s pleasure, a sad aberration of the free will gift, God is Existence itself and more.

So, little people in a big game, seek to stand in the sphere of Gods light and don’t lean entirely on yourself because these forces are very much bigger than you, even if you are educated in truth. Remember on the Jewish Day of Atonement as they recite the Kol Nidre, they are coming for you, almost all of them from the Tribe. At their head is their spiritual guide whom they mistakenly think is God, but we know him by the name Lucifer and recognize him via his deeds (Ye shall know them by their fruits).

Sorry for this terribly long post, promise I’ll never do it again; but one more thing that I sense from the tone of these posts. Seek every option before you resort to violence, and if you must resort to violence, not the dehumanizing way Hitler did it, but with measured reserve, for we are ALL God’s children, ALL of equal value to Him, and like any father of a family, he wants to see ALL his children do well, and so is most appreciative of those children who helped their siblings that are lost and in eternal danger. This applies only to the misguided, those who know they serve Lucifer, and choose to be the head of a rat rather than the tail of a lion; they have a different thing coming

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

"Threadshitter" - Noun. (Thred SHIT ter) - Definition - One who derails, destroys, and corrupts threads. [Urban Dictionary]

Seeing a lot of new faces here.

Let's up this game, the two minutes hate is awfully boring.

Security Council President on the situation in Syria- 18th April 2013. [UN] Worth a listen; called for immediate cessation of hostilities. Quote that defines it: "I don't want to comment, I am here simply to deliver what I was asked to do". Mr. President knows who runs Barter Town.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and ambassadors from the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China discussed on Thursday "possible diplomatic moves to end" the Syria conflict after U.N. diplomats said mediator Lakhdar Brahimi was determined to quit...Ban's spokesman, Martin Nesirky, said of Ban's meeting with the council envoys: "(They) discussed possible diplomatic moves to end the crisis. He briefed them on the latest developments relating to the chemical weapons investigation mission." [Reuters 2nd May]

"Diplomatic moves": Israel is a honey-badger, and just don't care (and actually sees this type of baiting as vitally important to fronting Arab states in the region, nothing better than giving it the old ultra violence once the actual big-boys have done talking). The security council members had already finalized the deal, if you missed it.

The real fix was in @ Davos btw for anyone who missed the talks there (smart post earlier about energy go find it), esp. regarding Turkish deals with Kurds / PKK; it took a while to hash out though:

The jailed leader of Kurdish rebels fighting Turkey, Abdullah Ocalan, has called for a truce after years of war.

Ocalan also urged the fighters of his PKK organisation to withdraw from Turkey, in a message read out to cheers during Kurdish New Year celebrations in the city of Diyarbakir. [BBC 21st March 2013]

just a small correction, please.

New Moon on the 10th is known as the "full flower moon"

the "full flower moon" - full moon - is on the horizon, for 24/25 May, the second full moon in this cycle, somewhat rare, the first being 25 April. . . moon cycle about 29 days, full/new roughly 14.5 days apart, eclipses usually pair'd - so there appears to be an outlier, rogue-ish moon stirring the global pot, heh.  from February 2013 it's the year of the Black Water Snake.

it's the ongoing Uranus in Aries square with Pluto in Capricorn that bears watching - IMHO - representing massive upheaval, sudden events, wars, but most importantly, a death/ending to cultural/national structures built from belief systems, over time - upcoming next exact pass will be 20th May, just prior to the full moon eclipse, could prove in-tense.

it's nature-all, nothin' personal. . . surprises happen when one isn't paying attention.

Truth be told, this is a crippled attention given. A mixture of Sisyphus and blinded sight, and chains put on responses.

If only we could go the speeds intended.

The net is becoming a silly place, where small voices practice and the weird is broken, because the Voice of One is here. Those who think that Order comes from a single vision, not multiplicity, because their business models cannot process reality. Who then make reality singular through force and expect no crash, death acceptable and then regret the loss of that which they rely upon, masked by drugged indifference.

Monoculture is the death of the divine.

Mon, 05/06/2013 - 03:36 | 3533541 Cathartes Aura
Cathartes Aura's picture

the 'net is indeed becoming more silly by the day, entertaining on a level, but no substitute for ones personal reality. . . unless of course, that reality matches the 'net, in which case, well no escape *needed* eh.

all my life, whenever things start to feel a little too shiney-happy, I sniff the Voice of One, the single vision mandate, the no other way entertained vibe, and pack it in, move on - often literally.  lately I hear people talk of how tired they are, they just want things to be "okay" - just when the propeller is about to fly off the post - and I wonder, how will they cope when it all gets ratched up yet another notch, and another.

monoculture is un-natural - the fist tightens, yet it cannot crush what it cannot hold. . . old stories are being out-grown now, by some at least, and those who cannot relax their grip, be it on self or on others, always lose in the end, despite their vain attempts at scripting his-stories.  control is an illusion.

feeling safe enough to abandon the void

ban the zero, ban the noise

quiet sounds picked up and dissected

all faint shadows reflected

try to ride on waves of activity

in every direction

you're the center and you're always free

in every direction

and of course, you know this.

Israeli launches airstrikes against Assads forces, while the anti-Assad forces are made up of fundamentalist Islamic factions, including Al Qaida, which the US also wants to back. both Israel and the US now back the terrorists in Syria and Russia could take a strategic interest there, which might mean putting actual Russian advisors and weapons systems in Syria in order to defeat the terrorists. And these same Russians tried to communicate information about the Boston bomber to US authorities. In conclusion I am damned sick and tired of these Russkies sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.

Yes, because the Russian - Syrian treaty wasn't done in 1971. Oh, sorry, I forgot: The USA has prior claim.

The Syrian coup d'état of March 1949 was a bloodless coup d'état that took place on March 29 and was the first military coup in the history of Syria. It was led by the Army chief of staff at the time, Husni al-Zaim. Syria's President, Shukri al-Kuwatli, was briefly imprisoned, but then released into exile in Egypt. Al-Za'im also imprisoned many political leaders, such as Munir al-Ajlani, whom he accused of conspiring to overthrow the republic. The coup was carried out with discreet backing of the American ministry, and possibly assisted by the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, although al-Za'im himself is not known to have been a member. According to Joseph Massad, a professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia University, the coup was sponsored by the United States CIA [1]

How long before we the people figure out we don't need to die or kill for some anonymous elite? Is it possible? God I pray that it is possible. It does not do to rely too much on silent majorities, for silence is a fragile thing, one loud noise, and its gone. But the people are so cowed and disorganised. A few might take the opportunity to protest, but it'll just be a voice crying in the wilderness. Noise is relative to the silence preceding it. The more absolute the hush, the more shocking the thunderclap. Our masters have not heard the people's voice for generations and it is much, much louder than they care to remember.

you can see this playing out...

Israel launching small scale air strikes against the Syrian military, doing what NATO would like to do but doesn't dare attempt right now.

not without some kind of indisputable "moral high ground", like say a mass chem attack against a highly visible civilian target resulting in large amounts of civilian casualties that could be placed squarely on Assad's shoulders.

that would neutralize Russia and it's high powered radar system and large amounts sea and land based SAM weapons it currently operates in and just off shore of Tartus. which could be turned against NATO air craft cause Putin knows that if Assad gets booted, he loses Tartus.

so the real question is how important is Tartus to Russia? how far will Putin go to defend his military interests in Syria?

I think the only reason why we haven't yet seen a Libya style "humanitarian kinetic military action" in Syria is because NATO is seriously concerned that Putin might just be willing to go 12 rounds over this and in his back yard, with Iran willing and able to pitch in NATO would find itself at a distinct disadvantage.

so Israel will do the heavy lifting at least for now, until "Syrian" anti air batteries suddenly and mysteriously become proficient enough to shoot them down...even in Lebanon.

The Syrian Central Bank - Banque Centrale de Syrie - holds its gold in Damascus. I say this based on the following precedent.

When Syria received gold in the IMF restititions, it received the gold via the Bank of England, opening a new set-aside account (and a drawing account). It then asked for the gold to be exported to Damascus. So, like Saudi Arabia (via BoE) and Libya (via Banque de France), Syria imported the restituted gold.

Syria may have had other gold in FRB or Paris but I haven't looked yet. But given the hostilities, they would not be likely to leave gold sitting around in FRB etc.

So all gold is most likely in Damascus, if its still there. It may have been squandered or else spirited somewhere by the ruling families.

So another Libya or Iraq gold seige?

Not long after the bombing, Russia suddenly does a sweep of the Caucasus and rounds up 140 suspected extremists. Now, we have the invasion of Syria beginning...She confirmed that Graham Fuller has been a long-time CIA operative in the Caucasus region (which is funding and supporting the "freedom fighters" there), and Graham Fuller is the father of Uncle Rustan's wife, who also has ties of working in that region. I have seen no reports of ground to air missile launches at the Israeli planes. The Syrians may not have an air defense system capable of stopping them, but the Russian ships must be able to take them out if they come near the ships. I have no clue if they might risk getting blown out of the water for Assad. The Israelis can fly under the radar and do a bomb toss maneuver on a land approach. Satellites can track all flights so there are no secrets after a minute or two. Both sides know so i do not know why it is not made public.
