Generation J(obless): A Quarter Of The Planet's Youth Is Neither Working Nor Studying

Tyler Durden's picture

We recently discussed the 'dead-weight' problem of youth unemployment in developed economies. The Economist estimates that the world's population of NEETs (not in employment, education, or training) is a stunning 290 million - or around one-quarter of the world's youth.

Sadly, many of the 'employed' young have only informal and intermittent jobs. In rich countries more than a third, on average, are on temporary contracts which make it hard to gain skills. Young people have long had a raw deal in the labour market.

Two things make the problem more pressing now. The financial crisis and its aftermath had an unusually big effect on them. Many employers sack the newest hires first, so a recession raises youth joblessness disproportionately. The number of young people out of work in the OECD is almost a third higher than in 2007. Second, the emerging economies that have the largest and fastest-growing populations of young people also have the worst-run labour markets.

Why is this so important? A number of studies have found that people who begin their careers without work are likely to have lower wages and greater odds of future joblessness than those who don’t. A wage penalty of up to 20%, lasting for around 20 years, is common. The scarring seems to worsen fast with the length of joblessness and is handed down to the next generation, too - leading to a vicious cycle that weighs on growth dramatically.

Countries with the lowest youth jobless rates have a close relationship between education and work. Germany has a long tradition of high-quality vocational education and apprenticeships, which in recent years have helped it reduce youth unemployment despite only modest growth. Countries with high youth unemployment are short of such links.

Companies used to try to bridge that gap themselves by investing in training; today they do so less.

Mismatch and training gaps may explain why over the past five years youth unemployment in flexible economies like America and Britain has risen more than in previous recessions and stayed high.

It is hard to be optimistic about a problem that is blighting the lives of so many people.

With a stunning 71% now expecting to work in their 'retirement'...

It would seem the opportunity for the jobs and wealth transfer to the younger generation is being blocked by a generation hamstrung by an increasingly repressive Federal Reserve.

The rich will hire you to protect them when you are starving. Kind of like what they do now. You will willingly take the bullet for the man. Think of yourself as a Clint Eastwood moving in front of the double barrel plastic death device for the President, except it won't be John Malkovich, it will be your neighbor holding a baby. You will train in the courtyard with a variety of no hesistation targets, and your training will allow a split second move into the path of the oncoming bullet. Sorry, distopian flashback. Nothing to see here.

This has serious consequences for everyone, rich or poor, in the future. Start working later in life with less skills and paid less, plus increasingly taxed more (cos, taxing the rich idea is going no place). Less and less money to tax the wages of the middle and lower classes. The trillion plus US student college debt that will mostly never be repaid and many of them will never get a good job, well enough to pay off their student loans. They also will have shit for credit and not be able to buy homes, property, new cars.

This is the precise definition of ZH's byline - on a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero. The only thing is - the timeline is shrinking for most.

The better questions are - who created this, and how does it get solved? Or - can it be solved?

The problem is population, and a degenerate culture. that is to say, high population; or over-population; which proves beyond a doubt, were there ever any, that Homo Sapiens is not "smart". The Medieval cults such as the Muslim Cult; with their unlimited fertility worship aren't helping much. It's a truism that those with weak minds are least able to control their biological impulses; eg. the impulse to reproduce. But Nature will take care of it for us. I personally regard WW11 as a population control mechanism; the subconscious is always functioning.

Apparently we're involved in a religious war; well, then the best response would be a tactical nuclear weapon set to detonate about 1200' AGL, directly over head of the black rock these morons worship; on the day of maximum attendance of the pilgramage. Followed by an anouncement that this was now a prohibited cult; tearing down all mosques everywhere and deporting all those who don't convert to something less toxic; to their respective cat boxes. For a change lets have the superior slaughter the inferior instead of the other way around. "proscribe" the Koran in any form; possession carries the death penalty; close all the Madrassa's that are churning out suicide bombers in Pakistan and Afghanistan; death penality to everyone and every organization funding such Madrassas, (principally young, bored, and dis-affected Saudi's, and the Iranian state apparatus. Simple. Just win. and be done with it.

If you do know that, don't you find that a bit 'curious' ?

Maybe the meme of the 'radicial Muslim takeover of the world' might not be reality ?

Research the Muslim Brotherhood and how the Brits pulled their strings and how more recently the West used them in Egypt.

As for their black rock, . . . . maybe if they clad it in cobalt, nuking it wouldnt be such a good idea.

At the same time there is the net, for those who have access, allowing someone with the energy to learn just about anything.  Cheap computers too in the west.  Hell, people give them to Salvation Army.  They may not be up to 3D gaming standards but hey, they can actually be used for things other than gaming.  Learn to count to 21 without having to take off your shoes and unzip your pants.

Learn someting useful, get good at it, see if you can get some contract work.

Contract work represents the existence of a problem, not the solution; a damaged nuclear reactor (such as Fukushima) has more stability than contract work on average.  It might work for a few or for a short time, but don't count on it being a primary source of income.

I know quite a few engineering grads who have gone the past decade without being able to find jobs.  Its quite scandalous, because unemployment has disproportionately hit the most educated.  Employers actually rejecting people with some of the top grades and aptitude because of a perception that they're 'too smart' for the jobs or 'too expensive'.

Quite a shift from the 1990s when engineers were treasured, at least in the Computer industry.

Tue, 05/07/2013 - 21:19 | 3539468 sethstorm

The problem is that they're well-protected US citizens and not some form of captive labor.  Employers hate other parties having freedom - which gets translated into "too smart" or "too expensive".

It is not only the young people.  Look what is happening in Greece, Spain, Portugal and a few other countries.  There are people out there who can't afford to eat.

They can't fight the system either as guns, ammo and the other stuff they need costs coin too.

At least in the old days you could make a bow and arrow before guns came into being.  There won't be a revolution by the poor, they don't have a chance against drones, tanks, artillary and missles.

How much does technolagy have to do with this phenomena?  More than what we would care to admit.  This situation will escalate, not improve, no matter who prints the money or how much gold there is out there.  We have created a monster for ourslelves this last century and there are so many contributing elements to it all, blaming one segment is not going to fix the problem.

The only thing we can hope to do is help those who are not capable if we are in the position to do so.  What goes around comes around.

In response to the others in my prior post..

ZH is the anti CNBC where the info posted on here should be taken with a grain of salt and somewhat as entertainment. Been reading this page since may 2009.

ZH loves loves loves to peddle doom and how the shoe is about to drop any minute now. First it was CMBS pools going bad, then it was a recession which was coming ANY.MINUTE.NOW with constant warnings about ISM going sub 50. No recession materialized.

Housing was dead dead dead according to ZH authors but of course now that housing is surging higher (no construction since 2007 common sense dictates with record low rates that inventory would plummet) ZH is silent on the matter.

Then it was Europe which would destroy us all with a replay of the creditanstalt event (starting with greece perhaps) of course EU problems have been contained with money printing.

Dont get me wrong plenty of good info is provided by the authors and for that Im grateful. But the TONE of the articles leave the reader feeling a sense of dread, that some derivative somehow somewhere is going to explode causing the global financial system to come crashing down. Instead of a economic holocaust (if u read ZH in 2009, 2010 its how this place sounded) we have an economy thats humming along.

To the younger readers that are struggling to find employment dont waste too much time endulging in the pessimism porn that is peddled from this page. Dont forget these guys make money off page views and clicks. It is their job to freak you out so that you stay on here. I still check this place a few times a week but focus more on my business and things that I have control over.

Thats all

At 29 I have been running into a very complex situation with the job hunt, as said in previous posts, I have going on 7 years of sales experience and some of which was a business owner. Now while I am getting large amounts of interviews, I never get a job in the end, always being knocked out by someone with my sales background along with 15 years software experience. With people I speak with in the 25 - 35 age ranges its all the same outcomes, working for much less to the point of not even being able to pay their student loans or live, holding degrees that mean nothing in this economy, or not being able to find jobs that they can meet the qualifications for. It's just sad to see it, especially because most of the bags in my age group feel a sense of entitlement which has caused the older ages be unable to retire because they still have to support the younger age groups.

I wish i could figure out or understand this situation, because constantly being told I am over qualified for entry level positions and don't have enough experience for any above entry level position.

That is horrible advice.  I love ZH, but it can be very depressing.  Some people should only consume it in small doses.  And, it is not of any help to someone in the position of this poster.  The best thing he can do is start his own business, of any kind, since the employment situation he is describing is only going to get worse.  And if he does that, he will truly not have time to hang out on ZH.  A quick check in daily will be more than enough.

Please, oh-29-year-old, go out there and sell something.  Anything.  Pretend you're an old Jewish or Yankee peddler. And live incredibly cheaply.  Read history books re how little it is possible to live on (Helen and Scott Nearing; Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London; Hoffer's Truth Imagined).  Your generation is so screwed.  Well, so are my friends in their 40s, who are in the same boat, but at least they don't have student loans.  Find free housing, by trading labor for a room.

Central banks spur consumption with trillions of stimulus that do not create full time jobs. Part of the stimulus ends up in low risk, highly leveraged SPX investments which make the top 1% very, very rich but the poor and youth continue to suffer. This will not end well.

Part of the problem is the USA is selling children college as the only route to making money!  Tradeskills are sold as lowly smuck jobs for the poor and uneducated.  I work with the trades daily and a master or a person that works for a sucessful trades company makes 6 figures.  The problem is most folks do not want to put in the time required to get the license.

HVAC installation and repair, electricians and plumbers, well good ones anyways are in short supply. Apprenticeship programs often times go unfilled.  Working with your hands and head oftentimes pay alot more then college grads.  The problem is the Gov and schools in this country want everyone so far in debt it takes them into their 40's to pay off those student loans. Apprentice programs are usually free!

Planning, using the correct equipment and identifying problems does take real skill in the trades.  They do make real money and may look like a hick taking home that 6 figure income laughing at all the college grads that could not even troubleshoot a light fixture!
