Israel Informs US That Russia Plans To Sell Weapons To Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

We almost got an entire 24 hour period that did not have news about imminent war rumblings out of Syria. Almost. Late last night WSJ reported about the civil war torn country (in which the rebels may or may not be using chemical weapons, but are backed by both Al Qaeda and the US government) again, this time on a leak by Israel having warned the US that Russians are "imminently" going to sell advanced ground-to-air missile systems to Syria "that would significantly boost the regime's ability to stave off intervention in its civil war." Supposedly this means that Israel would be unable to continue its unimpeded military incursions of Syrian sovereign airspace and blow stuff up at whim just because it feels like it, and for whatever pretext the Israeli defense forces come up with.

Some details on what Syria is said to receive from Moscow via the WSJ:

Israel has warned the U.S. that a Russian deal is imminent to sell advanced ground-to-air missile systems to Syria, weapons that would significantly boost the regime's ability to stave off intervention in its civil war.

The package includes six launchers and 144 operational missiles, each with a range of 125 miles, according to the information the Israelis provided. The first shipment could come over the next three months, according to the Israelis' information, and be concluded by the end of the year. Russia is also expected to send two instruction teams to train Syria's military in operating the missile system, the Israelis say.

Naturally, there were no official statements on the matter, meaning interpretation of events is up to "objective",  "unconflicted" media spin, the same way the US government is convinced it was the Assad regime using chemical weapons despite the UN's report claiming just the opposite.

U.S. officials said on Wednesday that they are analyzing the information Israel provided, but wouldn't comment on whether they believed the sale of S-300 missile batteries was near.

Russian officials didn't immediately return requests to comment. The Russian Embassy in Washington has said its policy is not to comment on arms sales or transfers between Russia and other countries.

The government of President Bashar al-Assad has been seeking to purchase S-300 missile batteries—which can intercept both manned aircraft and guided missiles—from Moscow going back to the George W. Bush administration, U.S. officials said. Western nations have lobbied President Vladimir Putin's government not to go ahead with the sale. If Syria were to acquire and deploy the systems, it would make any international intervention in Syria far more complicated, according to U.S. and Middle East-based officials.

According to the information the Israelis provided in recent days, Syria has been making payments on a 2010 agreement with Moscow to buy four batteries for $900 million. They cite financial transactions from the Syrian government, including one made this year through Russia's foreign-development bank, known as the VEB.

Since Russia has a naval base in Syria, it probaly should not come as a huge surprise that Putin is on friendly terms with the current regime. After all it is not just Israel and the US that have strategic visions regarding a country that many see as the gateway to the Israel-Iran conflict.

In 2009, the Russians started upgrading Syria's outdated analog SA-3 surface-to-air missile systems, turning them into the SA-26 Pechora-2M system, which is mobile and digital, equipped with missiles with an operational range of 17 miles, according to the assessment.

The U.S. is particularly worried about another modernized system Moscow provides—the SA-5. With an operational range of 175 miles, SA-5 missiles could take out U.S. planes flying from Cyprus, a key North Atlantic Treaty Organization base that was used during Libya operations and would likely be vital in any Syrian operation.

US planes flying out of Cyprus carrying Cypriot gold perhaps?

As for the whole farce surrounding Syria, ok, ok - we get it. By now even the cheap seat have grasped that Israel wants to not only start a war with Syria, but to preferably have the US fight it, but not before alienating public opinion against Russia and soon China.

Yes.

When the English prepared to invade America, Tzar Alexandr 2 positioned his navy off NY and informed them that an attack on the USA would be regarded as an act of war against Russia. The English backed down and the matter was settled without combat. The Rothschilds/City of London vowed to kill the Tzar's entire family; the rest is history.

The French amassed troops in Mexico, preparing to invade from the south. Proper poor planning prevents poor performance. They ran out of wine and went home.

The English conducted spy ops from Canada, including the operation that murderd Lincoln.

Do a little homework. The S-300 missle system has been around since the late 1970's.  Do you think the Americans and Israelis have come up against it in that time?

Putin is simply selling their old s-300 hardware that is being replaced with s-400 hardware.

Thu, 05/09/2013 - 13:11 | 3544916 Element
Element's picture

Actually the West hasn't come up against the S-300 in any war yet.  S-300 is the real heavy-hitter, consisting of a whole family of modernized networked mobile and distributed missile types, and several radar types - with cooperative distributed engagement i.e. you do not know where the missile will come from, it is not a localized system, like earlier SAMs, which makes it very difficult to defend against, or to degrade it, but it can find and degrade an attacker faster.

All the US has been facing up until now has been isolated and localized 1950s and 1960s tech SAMs, for the most part, and even those are very dangerous systems that slowdown and complicate air campaigns.

Greece bought the S-300 off Russia after the Balkans war, and Greece is a NATO member.

The Russians really needed the cash at the time, and to try and keep their production lines open with new orders, for the best systems they still made, when they couldn't afford to order any more themselves. Plus they were already developing the S-400 systems, which are really an upgrade of the S-300 system, because the S-300s of today are very unlike the 1970's versions, and their now defunct missiles have been replaced or massively upgraded also, or both. This is why NATO knows about S-300 performance, and how to circumvent the export version of it (that Greece has).

As for the vintage, Boeing 737s were around in the 1970s too, but the 737-700 series produced in 2013 are some of the most modern and effective jets around ... same for the F-15A and the F-15K, you can't even fairly directly compare them, in lethality and effectiveness terms. It's chalk and cheese.

Thu, 05/09/2013 - 15:21 | 3545670 Jack Burton
Jack Burton's picture

Indeed, AND Russia is now well into S-500 development. S-500 designed to engage every air threat with multiple systems.

Also, S-300 is designed for constant upgrade. And it is upgraded.

If you want to know about S-300 capabilities, Israel has said that Iran obtaining S-300 would be a game changer, and could result in Israeli attacks on Iran before S-300 became fully intigrated into Iranian air defenses. Israel knows S-300 will induce a loss rate on IDF planes that would make an air campaign against Iran painful and probably limited to a week tops.

S-400?? Good bye IDF Air Force! Bye, bye!

Military spending is the perfect type of spending, as far as TPTB are concerned.  You just have to be in on it, and on the right side of the racket.  The wrong side of the racket is to be the one spending the money, on jets, rockets, drones, aircraft carriers, battleships, etc.  The right side is to sell those arms, and provide financing.

Because not only is the gov known for paying a bit of a premium (overpaying), munitions are used and must be replaced.  When a drone strikes a bunch of goatherders most of us are thinking "hmmm, ok"

But if you are on the right side of the racket you are thinking "Ha, now they have to replace that Tomahawk/Hellfire/Cruise/ICBM"

BTW, anecdotally heard there are a couple pounds of silver in some of today's advanced armaments.  Yes, the same ones that go BOOM.  But who needs silver.

This was in DEBKA days ago and the WSJ and Wash Post have finally found it.

It is obvious the Russians should kit out Syria to deal with Israeli rockets fired from Lebanese air space. If NATO is so intent on spreading Wahhabi Fanatics into Syria and the Caucasus, Russia should kit out Syria. The S300 can get a good test against Israeli-US aircraft and ECM.

Putin seems to be the only sane guy on the block. I note his Embassy staff don't get killed like in Benghazi.

Yes, Putin does seem sane and competent.  In an age of constant lies, corruption and incompetence in the west, it is easy to admire him.  However, we must not forget that he is looking out only for his own interests, and Russia generally to a lesser extent, and while we may admire his competence he will never be a friend of any non-Russian.  A decade or two from now it's quite likely his name will be reviled as evil; but it's unlikely that it will be due to any change in his character, only a change in our perceptions, based on both his actions and the certain brainwashing of people in the west to hate him for those actions.

Remind you of any parallels in a prior "fourth turning"?

Further proof that the Ruskies play chess while the reactionary liberal West either play checkers with the occasional full-on "smash-the-board" strategy thrown in for good measure.  Russia, the West, and throw in China, all want the same thing when it comes to foreign policy: submission.  The West just has to come up with fairytale rationales so the children don't get upset.

BTW, the Iranians have been wanting the S-300 for years, struck a deal and thought they had them, but the Russians suspended that deal. But if Syria is getting them, then Iran will most likely be getting them too. But either way, the Iranians are busy building their own version of the Iranski-S-300, and also a medium-range equivalent of the Russian Buk SAM system.

This will not intimidate the west or Israel much though, as they already have access to S-300 system data, and ultimately they know how to defeat it if they have to. But it will make it more dangerous and inhibitive (but not prohibitive) for Israel to go around bombing and droning everyone, unchallenged. Either way, the Israelis have destroyed a lot of Syrian Russian SAMs in the past, that were then, the best the Rooskis could field.

The problem (according to the Russians), was the Syrian operator's training and operation, in 1982.

See Bekka valley Operation Mole Cricket 19:

Given this I'm reading this development to mean, THE OPERATORS MAY BE RUSSIAN THIS TIME AROUND.

And that is a whole lot more significant than the SAMs themselves boys and girls.

The Military-Industrial Complex has not tested the lastest Russian weapons systems against the latest US weapons systems (both made with Chinese parts!).  Thus the side with inferior weapons still thinks that the weapons they have are sufficient.  The only cure for this is to arm both sides, let them duke it out in some small country, and force the side that loses to begin a new weapons upgrade program.  History repeats itself, yet again...

[In explaining the "true" nature of banking in the world] The XXXX is a bank. Their objective isn't to control the conflict, it's to control the debt that the conflict produces. You see, the real value of a conflict, the true value, is in the debt that it creates. You control the debt, you control everything. You find this upsetting, yes? But this is the very essence of the banking industry, to make us all, whether we be nations or individuals, slaves to debt.

EDIT - From the movie "The International".

As UN rules require the victor to pay the debts of the vanquished (thats why merka is so #winning), the arms merchants have no stake in the outcome. They get paid either way. Except of course when one of the combatants is one of the arms merchants, which is what this whine is about.

If this wasn't a case of the third (or fourth) nuclear weapons gorilla "complaining" to the world's foremost, then I'd say that this is simply a case of the School Bully "complaining" to his Big Brother.

What a piece of shitty disinfor "news".

Let's finish the job interrupted by the GLASNOST and the PERESTROIKA and get directly into war win Russia, China and the rest of the F World!

USRAEL will prevail and we'll reduce population to a half, finally. Resources will be more than enough for all and... FIESTA!

Radiation? Well... We'll move Israel to new location, if needed.

Weapons will still be required to fight the against the resultant zombies/monsters and Angelina Jolie will be back on business too.

At the risk of sounding insensitive and un-PC, I'm looking forward to the Shock & Awe 2.0.  As are a host of MIC execs and salesmen, no doubt.

Screw Sequestration!  Bullish for the global MICs on all sides. /s
