The Number Of US Citizens On Disability Is Now Larger Than The Population Of Greece

Tyler Durden's picture

Excerpted from Jim Quinn's The Burning Platform blog,

The number of people on SSDI now exceeds the entire population of Greece. The aging of the population has nothing to do with the increase. In 1968 there were 51 workers for every person on disability. Today there are 13 workers for every person on disablity. Even the most pollyanna would agree that medical advancements since 1968 have been significant. These medical advancements would argue for less people being on disability and unable to work. Workplace safety measures have been increased exponentially since 1968, so that also argues for less disabled workers. The good old ADA law forced all workplaces to become disabled friendly. That argues for less people on disability. The country has transitioned from a manufacturing society to a service society. Workers don’t work on dangerous assembly lines anymore. Robots do the dangerous stuff. This should have dramatically reduced worker injuries and disabilities.

Everything I’ve pointed out is true. The tremendous increase in people on SSDI is nothing but a gigantic fraud, perpetuated by the Federal government and slimy lawyers. The government broadened the scope of disabilities to include stress, depression, and non-diagnosable things like aches and pains. I have stress, depression and pains too, but I get up at 5:15 every morning and go to work. The SSDI program is a joke. More than half the people on SSDI are lazy good for nothing leeches. They are sucking you and I dry while sitting around eating cheetos, watching Judge Judy on their government subsidized cable TV, and texting with other lazy fucks on their iPhones.

And don't forget, you get the added benefit of Medicare coverage after only two years of SSDI stress.

10,962,532: U.S. Disability Beneficiaries Exceed Population of Greece

The total number of people in the United States now receiving federal disability benefits hit a record 10,962,532 million in April, which exceeds the 10,815,197 people who live in the nation of Greece.

According to newly released data from the Social Security Administration, the record 10,962,532 total disability beneficiaries in April, included a record 8,865,586 disabled workers (up from 8,853,614 in March), 1,936,236 children of disabled workers, and 160,710 spouses of disabled workers.

According to its latest census, Greece had only 10,815,197 residents.

April was the 195th straight month that the number of American workers collecting federal disability payments increased. The last time the number of Americans collecting disability decreased was in January 1997. That month the number of workers taking disability dropped by 249 people—from 4,385,623 in December 1996 to 4,385,374 in January 1997.

As the overall number of American workers collecting disability has increased, the ratio of full-time workers to disability-collecting workers has decreased.

In December 1968, 1,295,428 American workers collected disability and, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 65,630,000 worked full-time. Thus, there were about 51 full-time workers for each worker collecting disability. In April 2013, with a record 8,865,586 American workers collecting disability and 116,053,000 working full-time, there were only 13 Americans working full-time for each worker on disability.

I personally know more than a dozen Americans on disability, and they are all miserable, unhappy, lazy, obese, and very, very, able bodied.

One had a case of shingles...15 years ago.

Can't work?  Golf!

The Disabled Golfer's Learning Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit 501c(3) foundation (Fed ID 27-0683553) dedicated to bringing the game of golf to people with physical disabilities, or helping those who have given up the game due to injury return to the game they love.

You may not be able to sit in a chair and answer a telephone, process benefit requests, do basic data entry, be a Wal*Mart greeter, telephone sex, or sort faulty components at a table.  However, you can still golf all day!

Can't swing a dead cat around without disabling somebody.

What's so insidious about all this is that it will only serve to further destroy the middle class. As more people go on disability, more will be taken from the middle class; the uber-wealthy will, of course, not be affected at all. Power will become even more concentrated at the very top.

In my opinion, once the gulf between rich and poor becomes great enough, the free money spigot will be turned off, and the Hunger Games will begin. If I were a greedy, diabolical asshole at the top of the food chain, and I wanted to force Americans to accept Chinese slave wages, this is exactly what I'd do.

fonzannoon's picture

McMolotov the only thing I can't get past, and I agree with you, is....I see these 1%ers enjoying the limelight in Manhattan very much. Turn off that spigot and their gallavanting around town would get interrupted by substantial violence at a much higher frequency than it currently does. I imagine that would go for many other places. No?

and to guess at a possible response...I think even the 1% know that even a bigger police state only serves as a bigger cleanup crew who won't risk their pensions to do anything other than spray and pray.

The potential flaw here is the assumption that there is some semblence of control.  What if, just for shits and giggles, we suppose not hardly a person is thinking further ahead than the next move?  And of those who are trying to game the system a few moves ahead are too few and are not necessarily coordinated in efforts?

I got a feeling that we are talking about the 0.01% that is concerned and the remaining 0.09% is going to eaten alive.

Guys.  Guys!  GUYS!  Everyone shut the fuck up for a minute.  Why are there red numbers on my quote screen?  What does that mean?  They've always been green by this time of day before.

nugjuice's picture

omg you're right what does that MEAN? Is that bad? Maybe the price went up so much it got too hot and turned red? SOMEBODY HELP US

China is the model. Those who refuse to follow the new rules will be dealt with accordingly during America's own version of the Great Leap Forward.

Actually the middle class has a lower disability rate than both the poor and rich, quite a few wealthy families have members on disability, the concept that this system is being abused by the poor isn't true, its abused by the wealthy too.

Many ex-NBA players have walked away from CA with disability settlements from the state

Larry Dallas's picture

If you've ever hired anyone, you'll know that most Americans work, production and work ethic aren't worth even Chinese slave wages.

NPR had an interview some time ago with some woman collecting disability because when she worked it made her feel stressed.

I couldn't fucking believe it.  The whole system in this case is rigged at a lower level.  Welfare state gone wild.  Yeah, it's going to end well, right?

So many libs are terrible with stress. It amazes me that they champion the theory of evolution, whereby organisms choose to adapt to stressful environments for survival purposes. How can a group of people hate stress, but love evolution?

I know there's more than enough cognitive dissonance to go around in both the red and the blue camps, but your comment rang a bell in this instance.

GeorgeHayduke's picture

First off, you're assuming she's a lib. I've encountered plenty of low IQ conservatives who work hard to get on disability and game the system. But then, that possibility wouldn't fit with the sterotypes that dominate your thought processes. Please don't let reality interfere with your ideology.

1C3-N1N3's picture

Anyone who advocates having a government large enough to enact those programs is a big-government liberal, regardless of party affiliation.

So yes, she is a lib. Republicans are libs, too.

IrritableBowels's picture

IIRC, she was "feeling stressed" because she already had handouts and knew if she went back to work, she'd lose her free money and "make less", including paying for daycare for her daughter.

Sucks, but does the fault lie with her or the system which allows, and some would say enables, her to get away with this?

Actually, you've caused me to stumble on the answer: send all of our "disabled" to GREECE and let the people there be employed taking care of them. To fund this endeavor, we take the overseas money of companies like apple and use it to give the greeks full employment and we get the slackers outa here!

The 'free' lunch currently being provided has been placed on the goberment credit card which is the black american express - no limits - no regrets - and no responsible adult in charge.  Since the Post Office can't seem to deliver that bill to the right address, the bill is way overdue.

oh, and by the way - how you like todays phony paper chart on Silver...

funny how it got slammed on the open and the close over there on Fraud Street NYC...

and be sure to look at the last three days of trading....see a fucking patterm?????????????

NYMEX open, slam it down.  Its own of the first things I check in the morning, and I feel ill at ease if they haven't slammed it down at least $.30 or $.40

Then I go on Nucleo Direct, and there is no silver available for less than $26.  Bullion.

DOW is on disability too but we call it the President's Working Group on Financial Markets. Everyone who invests in stocks gets some of this disability but we prefer to call it stimulus instead of welfare and free shit.

DaveyJones's picture

just reading this article caused me "stress, depression, and non-diagnosable things like aches and pains"

where are the forms?

IdiocracyIsAlreadyHere's picture

Not so simple.  Yes there are plenty of lazy asses out there but they would not be able to hang out and collect if it was not useful to TPTB (and their pals at .gov) for them to do so.  Another way to manipulate unemployment figures so that the proles continue to have no idea how bad things really.  "Leeches and lawyers" being the primary cause of this is WAY too easy and ignores the man behind the curtain as always.

Sudden Debt's picture

gives a totally different tone to the quote "Proud to be... on disability..."

same here in Europe. we have ghetto's filled with generational unemployed and disabled people. Mom, dad, and their parents did it so...

we give them a appartment when they turn 18 and 800 euro's to get by.

and the funny part...
when you start your first job, you earn 1300 euro's, a appartment costs you 700 euro's and the costs to go to work are about 200 euro's making it totally less profitable to become a slacker from the start than to start working.

we have over 17% of the population that could work on some form of state sponsorship.
32% work for the government.
21% immigrants who collect a lifewage of 1100 euro's plus housing and all the rest of the bells.
and starting 2015, there will be more people collecting a pension than there are people working in the private sector.

I have no clue how you can twist the math to pay for it all.

NoDebt's picture

That's why you don't work for the BLS or the BAE or some such government statistical agency.  They know how to twist the math to pay for it all.

I know the flames are rising but now is not the time to panic.  I'll tell you when it's time to panic.  [Casually strolls to the fire exit, opens it, steps outside yells "Now!" back through the doorway.]

math defying and simply amazing. Oops, gotta go, can't miss my teevee faves. That's my contribution. Ain't me special?

object_orient's picture

Exactly right. Low wage earners are given a strong incentive by the government to not work. They'd have to be pretty stupid to not take advantage. And yet there are so many like Jim Quinn who get their blood pressure boiling about the no-good lazy underclass. If HE has to get up early and work, despite aches and pains, dammit, everyone else should too. I bet Jim doesn't make minumum wage though.

ZerOhead's picture
