The Number Of US Citizens On Disability Is Now Larger Than The Population Of Greece

Tyler Durden's picture

Excerpted from Jim Quinn's The Burning Platform blog,

The number of people on SSDI now exceeds the entire population of Greece. The aging of the population has nothing to do with the increase. In 1968 there were 51 workers for every person on disability. Today there are 13 workers for every person on disablity. Even the most pollyanna would agree that medical advancements since 1968 have been significant. These medical advancements would argue for less people being on disability and unable to work. Workplace safety measures have been increased exponentially since 1968, so that also argues for less disabled workers. The good old ADA law forced all workplaces to become disabled friendly. That argues for less people on disability. The country has transitioned from a manufacturing society to a service society. Workers don’t work on dangerous assembly lines anymore. Robots do the dangerous stuff. This should have dramatically reduced worker injuries and disabilities.

Everything I’ve pointed out is true. The tremendous increase in people on SSDI is nothing but a gigantic fraud, perpetuated by the Federal government and slimy lawyers. The government broadened the scope of disabilities to include stress, depression, and non-diagnosable things like aches and pains. I have stress, depression and pains too, but I get up at 5:15 every morning and go to work. The SSDI program is a joke. More than half the people on SSDI are lazy good for nothing leeches. They are sucking you and I dry while sitting around eating cheetos, watching Judge Judy on their government subsidized cable TV, and texting with other lazy fucks on their iPhones.

And don't forget, you get the added benefit of Medicare coverage after only two years of SSDI stress.

10,962,532: U.S. Disability Beneficiaries Exceed Population of Greece

The total number of people in the United States now receiving federal disability benefits hit a record 10,962,532 million in April, which exceeds the 10,815,197 people who live in the nation of Greece.

According to newly released data from the Social Security Administration, the record 10,962,532 total disability beneficiaries in April, included a record 8,865,586 disabled workers (up from 8,853,614 in March), 1,936,236 children of disabled workers, and 160,710 spouses of disabled workers.

According to its latest census, Greece had only 10,815,197 residents.

April was the 195th straight month that the number of American workers collecting federal disability payments increased. The last time the number of Americans collecting disability decreased was in January 1997. That month the number of workers taking disability dropped by 249 people—from 4,385,623 in December 1996 to 4,385,374 in January 1997.

As the overall number of American workers collecting disability has increased, the ratio of full-time workers to disability-collecting workers has decreased.

In December 1968, 1,295,428 American workers collected disability and, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 65,630,000 worked full-time. Thus, there were about 51 full-time workers for each worker collecting disability. In April 2013, with a record 8,865,586 American workers collecting disability and 116,053,000 working full-time, there were only 13 Americans working full-time for each worker on disability.

Any one living under this country's laws should qualify for disability insurance. It was the system itself that disabled the citizens.

What's so insidious about all this is that it will only serve to further destroy the middle class. As more people go on disability, more will be taken from the middle class; the uber-wealthy will, of course, not be affected at all. Power will become even more concentrated at the very top.

In my opinion, once the gulf between rich and poor becomes great enough, the free money spigot will be turned off, and the Hunger Games will begin. If I were a greedy, diabolical asshole at the top of the food chain, and I wanted to force Americans to accept Chinese slave wages, this is exactly what I'd do.

McMolotov the only thing I can't get past, and I agree with you, is....I see these 1%ers enjoying the limelight in Manhattan very much. Turn off that spigot and their gallavanting around town would get interrupted by substantial violence at a much higher frequency than it currently does. I imagine that would go for many other places. No?

and to guess at a possible response...I think even the 1% know that even a bigger police state only serves as a bigger cleanup crew who won't risk their pensions to do anything other than spray and pray.

The potential flaw here is the assumption that there is some semblence of control.  What if, just for shits and giggles, we suppose not hardly a person is thinking further ahead than the next move?  And of those who are trying to game the system a few moves ahead are too few and are not necessarily coordinated in efforts?

I got a feeling that we are talking about the 0.01% that is concerned and the remaining 0.09% is going to eaten alive.

Actually the middle class has a lower disability rate than both the poor and rich, quite a few wealthy families have members on disability, the concept that this system is being abused by the poor isn't true, its abused by the wealthy too.

Not so simple.  Yes there are plenty of lazy asses out there but they would not be able to hang out and collect if it was not useful to TPTB (and their pals at .gov) for them to do so.  Another way to manipulate unemployment figures so that the proles continue to have no idea how bad things really.  "Leeches and lawyers" being the primary cause of this is WAY too easy and ignores the man behind the curtain as always.

gives a totally different tone to the quote "Proud to be... on disability..."

same here in Europe. we have ghetto's filled with generational unemployed and disabled people. Mom, dad, and their parents did it so...

we give them a appartment when they turn 18 and 800 euro's to get by.

and the funny part...
when you start your first job, you earn 1300 euro's, a appartment costs you 700 euro's and the costs to go to work are about 200 euro's making it totally less profitable to become a slacker from the start than to start working.

we have over 17% of the population that could work on some form of state sponsorship.
32% work for the government.
21% immigrants who collect a lifewage of 1100 euro's plus housing and all the rest of the bells.
and starting 2015, there will be more people collecting a pension than there are people working in the private sector.

I have no clue how you can twist the math to pay for it all.

Exactly right. Low wage earners are given a strong incentive by the government to not work. They'd have to be pretty stupid to not take advantage. And yet there are so many like Jim Quinn who get their blood pressure boiling about the no-good lazy underclass. If HE has to get up early and work, despite aches and pains, dammit, everyone else should too. I bet Jim doesn't make minumum wage though.

Up thread a bit ^^^ someone mentioned state-hired agencies that get people off state unemployment and on to federal disability. I have previously seen comments about how diffucilt it is to get on disability without a lawyer, who takes a big cut of the settlement. And ZH has run many pieces about income+benefits for welfare+SNAP vs. low wage earners. Why work for less money and fewer benefits if you can get more money and more benefits by not working? Why not take out a huge loan for a car, "education" or house you can never pay back? The moral collapse is nearly complete, and it was a top-down degradation.

what the angry man post fails to include in his rant, and apparently no one else on thread is aware of, is the increasing numbers of veterans of the war on trrrrsm claiming SSDI for PTSD - I realise the OP has a myopia related to the whole nine-eleven meme, but surely even he realises perpetual war will reap perpetual veterans on benefits. . .

...the long-term unemployable...according to empire terms and conditions...

Empire Distribution

This is what no one wants to hear, but I am telling you anyway:

There are non-conforming, self-destructive law breakers; several classes of conformers, subject to rewards and penalties by choice, linked in slave/master relationships; their chosen directors; and socially non-conforming, law abiding, developers. From the perspective of labor, the latter, the directors are eunuchs, beholding to legacy females, none of whom have any clue how an economy actually functions, except to behave in a manner that preserves the status quo, for as long as possible.

An empire, whether socialist, communist or capitalist, is a herd, subject to mob rule, which is fine, only so long as there are easily exploitable resources to ensure acceleration of demographic replication, that there is a revolving door of scapegoats and future generations to pay the bill. At the end of the cycle, the empire cannot get anyone to pay the bill, hence the viral growth and collapse of the financial sector, along with its dependent economies.

Digital accounting credits are not cash. They are debt. The corporations are hoarding debt. Beware; labor never maintains its investments within an empire’s reach. Labor ignores capital thievery so long as system gravity is useful, to fuel up.

No change may be initiated within an empire, but change occurs at quantum intervals, accordingly. The fact is we need a 20 hour workweek, we need to allow each other to raise our own children, and we need to group into communities by tradable surplus. Grouping to address deficits only accelerates deficits, which are sunk costs, gravity.

But you go ahead and prove me wrong.

Right now workers are being either squeezed before they get into the market (surplus of workers to choose from) or in it (pay freezes, making 10 do the work done previously by 12, for the same pay of course).

The most obvious solution, although not easy, never mind with government red tape, is to shorten the work week for those who are working too much, and give work to those who are looking, but unable to find it.

The only downside is training costs, government red tape (insurmountable), and it would mean reduced income for the currently employed.

Even still, we are only addressing income inequality, wich does nothing about wealth inequality (as a result of theft and fraud, predominantly)

Fri, 05/10/2013 - 00:58 | Link to Comment Radical Marijuana
Radical Marijuana's picture

Yes, q99x2, but that is comparing one kind of parasite with another. What feels best is to be paid to do meaningful work that one believes in doing. (It helps if that belief is well-grounded in reality, but that is not necessary in the short-term, as long as one feels that the work one is doing has a good purpose.) Doing nothing is not really something that makes people happy, since "doing nothing" is actually impossible to do. One ends up doing a lot of little things anyways, which may well not be satisfying, since there is no context of meaningful work, given purpose within some larger context.

The idea that people want to become parasites is mistaken. They are driven to become parasites by the banksters taking control over their civilization, and thereby driving all the rest of the social conditions which circumscribe the social environment to favour the parasites. As always, to focus on the individual "choices" and their psychologies, tends to ignore the bigger sociological and ecological factors. North American civilization is leading the way towards parasites taking control over governments, in order to drive everyone else into vicious spirals of parasitism ... Then, even the social predators degenerate towards become social parasites. Too bad, so sad!

AGAIN AND AGAIN, one has to attempt to comprehend the social meaning of the banksters being able to apply the methods of organized crime to take control over the government, in order to demonetize silver and gold, in order to substitute faith-based fiat money, made out of nothing, as debts, as the triumphant state religion.

The basic laws of nature, as manifested in the conservation of matter, seen in gold and silver money, are replaced by runaway frauds, based on the power of a privileged few to make "money" out of nothing, as legalized frauds. That legalized fraud, enforced by the government, systematically destroys the meaning of everything else that money buys, and everything else that people do to make money.

The ability of the parasites to take control of the money supply systematically perverts everything else that money controls, which means just about everything throughout the whole social system. A fundamentally fraudulent financial accounting system FORCES everyone living within it to adapt to that madness by themselves also becoming mad. After the banksters, as the supreme parasites, take control of the government, they then drive everyone else to become parasitical.

Triumphant organized crime that takes control of the government is "work" that destroys all other work. It becomes as impossible to live a sane life inside such an insane society as it is to ignore the IRS and the police. The banksters' triumphs drive the entire society to become more insane and sicker. Unfortunately, the parasites take over such total control of the overall culture that there appears to be no cure, other than the host eventually dying, which will take down their parasites with it ... As long as the vast majority of people continue to fail to understand the full meaning of making "money" out of nothing, then nothing else can be done to fix these kinds of social problems.

"Even the most pollyanna would agree that medical advancements since 1968 have been significant."

Sure, the biomedical science and technology have made awesome progress, BUT, their actual use takes place inside of the PROFIT FROM DISEASE SYSTEM, which is evil beyond our ability to imagine, since that is at least an order of magnitude more evil than the military system.

It is symbolically appropriate that our society as a whole, which is terminally sick and insane, has these rates of bizarre disabilities, which are increasing ... However, the fundamentals driving this are that the banksters took control over everything, including the medical establishment, schools, research, and journals, in order to advance their overall profit from disease systems.

The laws related to profit from junk food, along with profit from disease, ENFORCE systematic frauds against the American people, so that their personal habits were conditioned to be extremely bad for them, while only good for the short-term profit of corporations. But nevertheless, those systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, became the FOUNDATION of American society, and most of the rest of the world (to a slightly lesser degree).

The realities are that money is backed by murder. The medical system has become a murder system, backed by the powers of governments, to make money for private interests. Along the way, the American people have systematically been the victim of their government being taken over by the banksters, which are the biggest gangsters. Our medical systems in North America are runaway social insanities. The established systems routinely torture people to death, in ways that extract the maximum profits from doing that. Those making the most money then are able to be the most successful lobbyists of the government, in order to continue to drive that vicious spiral around and around!

There must be some human ecology, with some system of death controls. Our ACTUAL death controls operate through the maximum possible deceits, and the biggest single manifestation of that social insanity is within the deaths caused by the medical systems, which were systematically distorted to make the most private profits, for those who could then use those profits to continue to corrupt the government, to drive those vicious spirals even further.

Healthy nutrition makes less money, and is systematically suppressed by the governmental subsidy systems. The most extreme example, of course, of these kinds of trends was that cannabis was criminalized, although it otherwise would be the cheapest kind of herbal medicine, as well as the cheapest plant source of oil and protein for human food. That was NOT an accident, but an aspect of the ways that the bankster controlled governments are set up to make more private profits for a few, by them being able to do every evil thing that they can possibly do!

I found this article, as well as many of the comments above, to be relatively superficial and silly, because they appear to only appreciate isolated fragments of this overall social situation. The complete set of theoretical solutions require a different murder system, operating different death controls, in which medicine is overtly seen as a death control center, operating systematic artificial selection pressures upon the population. THOSE THINGS ALREADY EXIST! HOWEVER, THEY ARE BEING DONE THROUGH THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE SOCIAL DECEITS, IN ORDER TO SERVE THE INTERESTS OF PRIVATE PROFIT NUMBERS, WHICH ARE IN A VICIOUS CYCLE OF THE PROFIT FROM FRAUDS BEING REINVESTED IN MORE FRAUDS.

This little issue of disabilities increasing, often in perhaps bogus ways, should be seen as a fragment of the overall social problem of the triumphs of the banksters taking control over the economy, through the methods of organized crime directing the powers of governments to drive everything askew. Inside that system, everything is relentlessly bullshit, based on impossible ideals, from both the banksters and their buddies, as well as from their controlled opposition, which promote the same impossible ideals, which always backfire badly ... The solutions are to face the social facts regarding the real death control systems, and then operate those better, through more information along with higher consciousness. However, at the present time we are looking at the globalized runaway triumph of the banksters' systems of social lies, backed by violence, dominating everything more completely, and thus, more insanely! THESE EXPONENTIALLY GROWING SOCIAL TRENDS ARE RAPIDLY CONVERGING ON SOME BREAKING POINTS ...
