Saudi Man Arrested At Detroit Airport For Owning Pressure Cooker

Tyler Durden's picture

Meet the new "WMD" whose merest ownership is sufficient to get you arrested. That, and having an Arabic sounding name of course.

From (the soon to be broke?) Detroit News:

Man from Saudi Arabia arrested at Detroit airport with pressure cooker

Federal agents arrested a Saudi Arabian traveler who arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Airport with a pressure cooker, a key component used in the Boston Marathon bombings last month.

Hussain Al Kwawahir will be arraigned at 1 p.m. in federal court for allegedly using an altered passport and lying to a Customs and Border Protection Agent about the pressure cooker.

Al Kwawahir arrived at the airport Saturday from Saudi Arabia, via Amsterdam, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in federal court.

He told agents he was visiting his nephew, who attends the University of Toledo.

During baggage inspection, officers noticed a page missing from his passport.

Al Kwawahir told officers he did not know how the page was removed from the passport.

During the baggage exam, officers found a pressure cooker.

Al Kwawahir said he brought the pressure cooker for his nephew because the devices are not sold in the United States, according to the complaint.

Later, he changed his story and admitted that his nephew had purchased a pressure cooker in the U.S. but it was cheap and broken

Moral of the story: don't lie about your pressure cooker.  Also, it may be time for Hawkins to change their slogan:

For example, I find some of the comments on connection between financial /monetary system / central banks and Israel or those of Israeli background to be interesting and thought prevoking.

Yes, fuu, I am not ashamed to admit that I called for the banning of obvious and clearly demonstrated and egregious trolls, and only three or four of those, at most.  In contrast to those of weak mind and weak sense of justice who are willing to tolerate and condon the most destructive of trolling in the misguided name of "free speech".

It is fools like you, who deny that trolls and trolling can exist and do exist, who have been directly responsible for the degredation and destruction of more online forums than I can count.

Miffed Microbiologist's picture

Akak, I do agree with you about the trolling problem and I too have seen it degrade other sites. However, I must say I have a big problem with banning someone. I must admit I do like polite civil discourse and debate as I have stated before. I do cringe when I read someone truly excoriating another, calling them mother fucking cunts etc. But I realize my offense is my affair. One can only be responsible for ones own feelings, not another's. When you start down the banning path you open up an entire new set of issues and you are faced with a society we have today: militaristic political correctness permeating every facet of our lives. Today racism and religious attacks are held up a reasons for banning. What will tomorrow be? Titty avatars? Sexual slurs? Homophobia? Once one starts down this path we both know the final outcome. This is why I must disagree with you on the trolls. To me, the best response is a good old fashioned Amish shunning. Without the constant stroking they run out of gas and fade away because what they need, more than anything,is attention. Perhaps you've never had a little kid constantly clambering for your attention. As a parent you learn very fast you're in deep shit if you always give it.

I will say sometimes I appreciate some trolls as long as they don't post day after day the same tired drivel. I want my ideas challenged, my world
shaken. I want to read all points of view. I want my ass kicked if I deserve it because I NEVER want to become a deluded lost sheep grazing comfortably in a pasture. Comfort is dangerous because it lulls one into a dangerous tranquility and then you lobotomize yourself further with external stimuli. I was attracted to ZH because it provided a forum to help me grow. And if you call me a self deluded idiot for believing in a higher power I'm certainly ok with that. Banning you for that seems strangely
sacrilegious.

Miffed;-)

Wed, 05/15/2013 - 00:55 | 3563473 akak
akak's picture

Miffed, I appreciate your thoughts here, as they are, as usual, quite .... thoughtful.

Nevertheless, I must disagree with you regarding trolls.

First, let me make it clear that when I speak of trolls, I have a very particular, and particularly insidious, sort of poster in mind.  Trolling has almost nothing to do with the advocacy or denigration of any particular opinion or beliefs, but everything to do with tactics.  While the troll generally takes an anti-consensus opinion within a given online community, that which makes them a troll is the repeated, relentless, incessant, and antagonistic spamming of most or every conversation and thread, along with the pointed unwillingness or evasion of meaningful response, discussion or debate.  The troll pretends to be an honest participant in the conversation, but in fact intrudes in it to cloud, divert and distort meaningful discussion instead.  The troll is nothing but an agent of disruption and dissention.

And yes, I have indeed been a member of more than one online forum that were largely or completed effectively destroyed by trolling.  One, in fact, was destroyed (and never recovered) from the rabid actions of ONE single troll --- that is how effective, and destructive, the act of trolling can be.  To simply say "ignore them" is woefully misguided and ineffective, as I have seen that tactic employed, only to further feed their incessant pollution and antagonistic undermining of the forum under attack.  Pulling one's head under the blanket does NOT usually solve the problem of trolling, it much more often merely fans the flames.

I have been attacked and downarrowed by other members here for my uncompromising intolerance of trolling, and I make no apologies for it, nor will I bow to the muddled-headed belief of some that the concept of free speech encompasses, or should tolerate, ALL speech and behavior.  Banning trolling is NOT censorship!  It is simply sweeping aside the broken bottle on the highway in order to allow the traffic to travel as it should.

I see banning demonstrated trolls as analogous to the removal of a crying and screaming infant from a church service or movie theater --- one does not in such cases argue for the "free speech" of the disruptive element that can or will ruin the experience for everyone else, much less when it is the purposeful design of that element to be disruptive.

Akak, thank you for taking the time to clarify you point for me. Perhaps the lack of definition and terms for describing the various types of trolls has caused my misunderstanding. I must concur with you free speech has never condoned yelling fire in a crowded theater simply for the sheer enjoyment of seeing people trampled. I frankly can't understand why an individual would want to do so but I certainly can't deny the existence of such sadists. And, though I do come off as contemplative and thoughtful, I do believe in swift justice for heinous crimes or overtly abusive people. I am not clouded by over thought in such matters. Please don't label me as a " let's all be tolerant of one another" advocate. These individuals tend to devolve into pure relativism. I do believe in standards.

I do think we are walking on a very dangerously tenuous line here. For example, take Trav for instance. Here was a man who was the most vile, nasty, vicious, evil racist spewing POS who I wouldn't spend 5 minutes in a room with if I met him personally. However, many times he brought up points I hadn't considered and actually was very intelligent and well educated in many areas. Yes to find those attributes you had to wade through a lot of smelly garbage. I am not sure if he qualified as your tactical troll as you describe though he was probably the most verbally hateful. I guess I would be more comfortable with a temporary ban in a case like his and then a permanent if numerous complaints warrant it.

I would not attack or down arrow you for simply having a strong feeling about trolling. You are passionate about the issue and I respect your feelings on the matter. You, obviously have had worse experiences than I and, therefore, are a better judge in this area. But I do fear the " Orlyization" of ZH where strict moderation is the norm and " happy thoughts" rule the day. It seems the pendulum swings always from each extreme and never achieves any balance between the two.

Akak,
Sorry for taking so long to respond. My life at the moment is a category 5 hurricane and I really needed to collect my thoughts to respond properly to you. Please understand I am not here to criticize but to simply divulge my perspective. I only ask for your consideration as my opinions are given with no hidden meanings or innuendo. I speak to you from the heart as a friend,as an equal in terms of someone striving for goodness, truth, integrity and authenticity. Please bear with me and I welcome any response on your part.

The link provided by fuu is a brief window into an interesting dialog. I will 100% grant you the fact a brief window cannot fully describe a situation that leads to an absolute conclusion. I realize there is much history surrounding this so I don't want to make much of it but use it as illustrative. Trav in this case was really being quite innocuous for Trav but the response you gave was dramatically negative. The heat from the post was palpable. The anger was fever pitched unbalanced into deep hatred. I think you went to a very dark place at that moment. Please understand, I am not judging you I'm just describing what I see as an impartial observer. I have spend most of my life dealing with horrible unbalanced hatred I feel a strong bond with you as a compatriot. To be honest, if that post was about 5 years ago I'd be your staunchest ally in the banning of Trav and I'd high five you when the deed was accomplished. But, what I realized over the course of many many years, every time I banished a Trav in my life an new one was always waiting in the wings ready to take his place. My life became a never ending hellish form of wack-a-mole. I quit jobs, was fired from jobs, moved to a new location...all to no avail. Trav was always there waiting to torture me and i always rose to the occasion to fight him. It became an obsession. There was no joy or peace in my life and I lived in extremes. Eating non stop anything I felt like ( I damn well fucking deserved it!) and then living on lettuce for a month to atone for it. I severed friendships over small issues, it was my way or the highway and fuck them if they didn't see it my way. Until my health started to fail and my dr wanted to put me on Zoloft. I decided I wanted to change and fortunately I found someone who did help me and gave me tools to fight my way out. If you are interested I will show you what I did.

When someone is spouting vehemence, vitriol and anger, you cannot respond in kind. The reason is when you do respond angerly it becomes a mirror. Anger response to anger can ONLY create more anger. Then you have something a kin to 2 big horned rams butting heads. The sound is resonate and striking but no resolution or growth occurs. In all my comments to Trav, negative as well as positive, he never engaged me. Perhaps he didn't consider me worthy for a response. But I never even got a terse " fuck you stupid bitch". Trav wanted a response on his terms and I refused to give it. He found many others more than willing to accommodate his demands. I don't see Trav as a tactical troll as you describe and I don't think he could have distroyed ZH singlehandedly. I think your past interaction with trolls may have caused a bit of hypersensitivity on your part. Your fists are clenched and you jaw is set and tense. Relax, loosen your grip, breath deep and let go. You are smart, articulate, well read and kind. There are many here that admire you and respect you opinion including myself. I'm not flattering you, just telling you what I see. Let your gifts shine through on their own merit, you don't need the hate. It does not truly serve you.

Miffed, as usual, your comments are obviously both heartfelt and very meaningful.  Thank you for them.

And you are sadly correct in having seen and felt not only my contempt for Trav but actual hatred towards him.  While I stand by every one of my opinions both in this thread and in that older one, I will be the first to admit that I had let my emotions get away with me.  Perhaps it was, as you guess, because of my extensive and extremely bitter past experiences with determined trolls who had wreaked their havoc on several online forums in which I used to participate with such devastating effect.  I suppose my feelings on the matter are so strong because unlike many others, I have mostly only ever participated in one online forum at any given time, and so maybe have come to strongly identify with, and feel defensive towards, each particular forum in turn --- until the trolls succeeded in destroying that one, and I was forced to move on.

But you are right, as usual: the hate is just self-defeating.  I know that, but it can be very hard for me to not [ublicly judge and attack those who clearly demonstrate their devious and pernicious motives and agendas.  What Trav's agenda was, aside from all the deeply personal attacks and his overriding racism, I do not know nor really care, but his swarming and purposeful diversion of so many threads here were not adding to the discussion or discourse, but clearly subtracting from them.

Please do tell me though, Miffed: do you not believe that there are, and have been, clear cases in which a given poster was either effectively or deliberately undermining this forum, and do you believe that any and all comments, of ANY sort, should be tolerated under the guise of "free speech"?  Does not the screaming baby sometimes need to be taken out of the church?

Akak,
Thank you for such a wonderful kind response. I was hoping you would consider my points and was prepared for the hurt of a total aspersion. One can never know when one risks opening up to another. We humans are dangerous creatures and most like to err on the side of safety in such matters. I now breathe a sigh of relief.

There is nothing wrong with anger. In fact it is quite helpful. Anger will often bring one to clarity and sound purpose. Do not apologize for anger. Hatred and hostility are simply unbalanced forms of anger. Hatred does NOT bring clarity. In fact it brings confusion like a wild animal caught in a trap. Responses are not rational but impulsive. In fact, during the rampage of hot hostility you will forget the event. You may remember the beginning of the stirrings of sheer hatred and then see the effects of the storm when it passes but the middle will be muddled as a strange dream where only snippets are seen. Akak, when you RESPOND you are angry ( balanced) when you REACT you are in hatred ( unbalanced). There is a dramatic difference which I hope you understand. Please also understand YOU are not hatred. It may come from some where deep inside from some issue from long ago past, but IT DOES NOT represent you. By understanding this you can tease youself away from it.

In my opinion ( correct me if I'm wrong) I see you a deeply caring, loving and passionate person. And because of this you care for this site and those here who you find commonality and similarity. I wont go so far as calling it a family but a form of one. When you see an interloper who is threatening this you do what any passionate person does when his environment is under attack. You fight with all your heart to preserve the good. This is admirable and believe me this world would be a much better place if more akaks were in it. Look at is this way. Our world is a shamble as we both know. There are sheeple walking amoug us that neither one of us can help. We both are impotent in so many ways. However what if we we're to create a place of respite, a place unsullied from the sickness and horrors of this world? We could visit it and recharge, be ready when called upon in the real world to do what is needed. What we created would be so valuable and precious. Unfortunately this place is not fully insulated and is invaded by those who wish it's destruction. A demonic force if you will. To ignore a demon is foolhardy. To engage it fully has its problems because it has infinite energies and resources and will simply wear you down as it morphs into new forms over and over again. This is like when I was caught in a rip tide when I was 12 and started to panic fighting to pull my self to shore. Thank god I remembered my training and swam a mile diagonal to shore and am alive to talk to you today.

I do not " tolerate" the posters you allude to. You forget I am a passionate person as you and my history of hatred makes it easy to fall into that mode. However, I will not allow anyone draw me into engagement unless I do so thoughtfully and on my terms. I demand that respect and if that won't be given I won't engage. This is not cowardice. I value my worth more than anyone who would use me and put me somewhere emotionally I don't want to go. I will given no one the satisfaction they got me and twisted me on a hot spear. I think you have wonderful gifts, a delightful writing style and I always enjoy reading your comments and points of view. But I do think at times you need to pause a bit. Sometimes the little baby doesn't need the whipping. There are approaches that can be just as effective. Thank you for hearing me an be kind to the one known as Akak.

Friend of mine deals in high end tube electronic components. He bought some from a Chinese supplier over the phone a few years ago. The salesman kept emphasizing how cheap his goods were. My friend told him he did not want the cheapest, he wanted the best quality they could make.

The Chinese salesman was thrilled to bits. He promised the best components available, and he came through with good parts on time.

The cost was about 30% more than the cheap crap.

1) you don't have to declare a cheap pressure cooker

2) it's not a crime to be missing a page from your passport, and they haven't necessarily provided any evidence that he altered it

3) He was charged with lying to CPB, and assumedly not in his native tongue (which only means that his statement changed over time)
