Michigan School Shuttered After Taking Money For Services Not Provided
The Buena Vista school district in Michigan accepted $402,000 of aid over three months from the state for a service is was not providing. As RT reports, the school district has taken the drastic steps of firing all of its teachers and shuttering its classrooms before the end of the school-year as the state tries to claw back (or seek an alternative plan) its ill-gotten gains. "We've hit a dead end," the local school district explains, unable to help the school of 400 mostly black and poor students, explaining that they are hesitant to bailout school districts and set a bad precedent. One parent exclaimed, "Our kids ain't really learning like they used to," adding that, "being out of school this early is going to hurt them a lot." The local democratic Representative added helpfully, "we know from past history that students have been treated differently - going back to Brown vs Board of Education." Buena Vista teachers had offered to work without pay for a week, but that was not enough to keep the district's schools open. Instead, the district may offer a “skills camp,” a voluntary substitute paid for by federal grants, and run six hours per day for up to six weeks.

City schools in my area of California receive money in about 67 different pots. Each requires lengthy applications and adherence to controls. Almost half of the school budget is devoted to overhead serving all these tranches of money with their varied requirements. All of this was imposed by politicians. Screw the bunch of them.
Yes, and even with all that money most districts put out knuckle draggers that are challenged to walk and chew gum simultaneously. We, unfortunately, ended up in one of those districts and made the choice putting our kids K-12 in private school. This cost us $200,000 plus we payed taxes for public schools. Needless to say we are quite fucking pissed off to pay for such a bloated useless school bureaucracy that we didn't use. Friends who had kids in the public school told me they only had one text book per class so their kids had to copy the pertinent sections to do homework. So the lion share of that money was obviously not spend in the classroom. The situation in Cali is hopeless at this point. We need a gigantic wildfire to burn down the dross and dead weight and start fresh in so many ways.

To be homeschooled, presumably there must a home. ZH folks don't seem particularly aware of the fact that that for most of this country, it's public school or no school, because their "homes" are poverty-stricken single-parent households, or else both parents work. And in the few households with someone available to homeschool the kid(s), that person is almost certainly a moron who recieved a public education and is totally unqualified to teach. No, not that they lack Masters in Education, which is are worthless pieces of paper, but that they're simply imbeciles who should not be teaching anyone.
You see, the public education system did not merely offer a new means of education, that is not how government programs function. It eviscerated the prior means of education, burnt the corpse, and buried it at sea. The average modern American (British, Canadian, Australian, Western European, etc.) is overwhelmingly unfit to be teaching anyone anything; 2-4 generations of public schooling and various other statist evils have made sure of it.

These are schools for at risk kids. ie Kids who have commited at least three crimes who are looking at permanent incarceration if they don't improve scholastically and maintain a set grade level.
Each student is given an IEP, Individual Education Plan, and the teacher is to administer each IEP with up to 12 students. Sometimes you get young green teachers believing they are going to help the poor kids. It's just that they haven't been taught to learn. Usually they are young women who end up raped, stabbed, or worse. If they aren't, after three months they have been so terrified that they won't ever step foot in a classroom again, but still have to pay back the $100k they borrowed to get their teaching degree.
The schools typically receive between $25-50k per student from the state and federal government. Along with other grants and in some cases free buildings to house the "school". The administrators are normally seen driving brand new Cadillacs and movin on up to a big house shortly after the school goes live.

This district is in my region and has been in failure mode for a long time. It is next to school districts that could have easily absorbed these students. So does it make financial sense to run a school district that is failing for only 400 kids in k-12? No it doesn't.

But hey, maybe the community will get together and pray again. That's been the answer around here for 30 years, as the region deterioates year after year. I'm not against prayer, but God helps those who help themselves. It's going to take more than prayers to save Saginaw and Buena Vista.

My sister teaches at one of the inner city schools in Saginaw, and I can't tell you how many former students have been killed or have killed someone in the gang wars. It is tragic.
All schools should be in the private sector. Make parents take personal responsibility and pay for their own childs education. Then perhaps they will make sure their money is being spent wisely. They will stop spending money on teachers/schools that churn out a bad product.... The students who don't want to learn will end up in low paying jobs. After audits of schools in Detroit it was found that they were spending upwards of $100k per student.
One of my relatives lives in Detroit. I said it would be better if the state just cut a check for $30k to every student and let them do whatever they want. Then close every school. The budget savings would be enough to save Detroit from bankruptcy.
The response was, "That's stupid, where are the kids going to go to school and learn?"
My response was, "You think they go to school to learn?"
I've had drawn out arguments with people about this. When I tell them that throwing tons of money at people with sub-90 IQs to sit in classrooms for eighteen years will do absolutely nothing to help them or anyone else, they tell me that I have "no evidence" for my position, that "everyone knows" that intelligence comes from education and that if everyone had the same "opportunity" then everyone would be smart and successful.
It's pointless. They're completely brainwashed, zombified, 1984 doublethink.

Is that 100K over the 13 year course load? So it costs 7,600/year per student. Yeah, that's kinda high, but giving them 30K as kindergardeners and saying "good Luck" means they get 2,300 dollars per year for education which ain't jack. That only works out to 45 dollars per week for 13 years with no pay raises.
Kids do need to learn, but we need to find ways to instill in them a thirst to learn and when everything is handed to them on a welfare platter, what incentive is there to learn anything? We have breed this situation and now are reaping the harvest.
Homeschoolers educate their children for a small fraction of what the public schoools pay in any district. Mo money is obviously not the answer. We've been trying to educate the uneducable for decades. It ain't working and it never will. Some people are just smarter than other people, and that trait tends to be inherited.
In America, School is regarded as a baby-sitting service by 95% of people, black, Mexican, and white. If education were their primary concern, then these parents would be involved in their children's education, actually studying with them or at least reading what the children are supposed to be learning. That less than 5% of parents have any idea of what books their children are reading or what is on their tests proves that most parents are feckless idiots when it comes to education or safeguarding the souls of their own children. Even Plutarch commented on how the dumbest, most worthless slaves tend to be used as their sons' pedagoges, instead of the wisest slaves. But the Chinese here in America, they study their asses off, and the parents are much more involved, which is why they are eventually going to own everything here.

Actually the story is running in some US media. Teachers volunteered to work unpaid, but there is a michigan law that says they can't. So the district closed early, students will still graduate in June and next year is anyone's guess.

Back in the summer of '92, two black friends who graduated from BV came up to the thumb of Michigan to play in a basketball tourney with us. One of the guys played for Temple. We KICKED SOME ASS! It was fun... and then taking these great guys out to the sticks to party with white friends, who never met a black kid, was even more fun than the tournament. They were a little scared, but everyone but a few angry idiots liked them. It was fun. I miss those days when America was more niave and openminded. Sorry to hear these kids won't be able to finish school in AMERICA!

I work right down the road from this school. It has steadily declined over the years as has Saginasty Saginaw overall, not to mention the entire publik edukashun sistum.
This is just another example of what happens when Liberal Democrats are in charge. Detroit, Flint and Saginaw.....three of the worst cities in America, and just so happen to be in three of the most populated blue counties that got ObaMao re-elected. The story is always the same; WE NEED MORE MONEY.

Edit: the $7600+ dollars is not per pupil spent, it is the amount of state aid per student received in addition to the city/county taxes collected for the school district.

Our public school system is unfixable. We ought to shut the entire system down and set up a pure private school with a tax credit/grant system to replace it. Even then, a big part of the problem is parents, we have a generation or two of high school drop outs sending their own kids to school expecting the same kind of achievement.
