Russia Captures US Embassy Worker In Act Of CIA Recruitment; CIA's "Dropbox" Gmail Address Revealed

Tyler Durden's picture

Following the just concluded recent visit by John Kerry to Russia, one may have been left with the impression that the tensions of the Cold War are dead and buried. Just the opposite it appears. In what may be a well-timed and orchestrated announcement, moments ago Russia announced that it had caught an American, Ryan Fogle, a third-secretary at the US Embassy in Moscow, "red-handed" as he tried to recruit a Russian intelligence officer to work for the CIA. There goes any leverage the US may have had in attempting to persuade Russia to relent on the joint-Western push to "liberate" Syria. Just as Russia, run by a former KGB spy, had intended all along, and just another slap in the face of the US department of state, which lately can't seem to find its way out of a scandal-ridden (and redacted) paper bag to save its life. But perhaps most amusing is that in the attached letter given to the recruitment prospect, the CIA give out the email address to be used to indicate interest in working for Langley as follows: unbacggdA@gmail.com. How the times have changed.

Finally we wonder just how the CIA will recruit when the ECB finally bans €500 bills, allegedly used to facilitate "money laundering." Apparently spy recruitment is one of the bullish cases for the reddish banknote.

From Reuters:

The announcement came at an awkward time, just days after a visit by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry during which Washington and Moscow agreed to try to bring the warring sides in Syria together for an international peace conference.

The Federal Security Service said Ryan Fogle, a third secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, had been detained overnight carrying "special technical equipment", a disguise, a large sum of money and instructions for recruiting his target.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it had summoned U.S. Ambassador Michael McFaul over the case and a Russian television station published photographs which it said showed Fogle being detained, apparently wearing a blond wig.

A successor of the Soviet-era KGB, the FSB said Fogle worked for the Central Intelligence Agency and that he had been handed over to embassy officials at some point after his detention.

Diplomats accused of espionage are usually expelled or withdrawn.

"On the night of May 13-14, a staff employee of the CIA, Ryan Christopher Fogle ... was detained by counter-espionage organs of the Russian FSB while attempting to recruit an employee of one of the Russian special services," the FSB said.

"Recently American intelligence has made multiple attempts to recruit employees of Russian law enforcement organs and special agencies, which have been detected and monitored by Russian FSB counterintelligence," it said in a statement.

Pictures of the agent's capture via RT:

And below is the letter that contained the printed instructions for the Russian citizen being recruited.

Expect a prompt retaliation by the US, which now has to expose yet another cell of Russian spies operating in the US just to save face.

Nice retaliation for the "You never told us he was a terrorist" rant about the Boston citizens who graduated from the pressure cooking school.  I bet this was a CIA plant to get that expected retaliation out of the way so it doesn't happen with something important.  I think the english note was for the bozo to not forget his lines....

The letter reads like a Nigerian scam letter. Also, this idiot looks like he's got eyeliner on in the second picture! WOW, what a dummy.

ETA- Having said the above, What are the legal implications? Does this guy maintain diplomatic immunity? Or, does actively conducting espionage operations in Russia void such immunity?

I looked at the 2nd picture again and I think that there is actually a swiss army knife there.  The cheap one they give out at corporate events, with the white tweezers stuck in one end.

Wow, I could be a spy, except TSA won't allow me to bring it to my work....

Dashed again

Has tradecraft really declined to the point where the CIA would trust vital communications to a company that scans all e-mails (albeit allegedly solely for marketing purposes)?

Or has Google in fact merged with all the three-letter agencies and Bilderberg as Alex Jones warns?

Everybody fears they're efficient, but it looks like the truth is they're deficient.

Seems like a headfake, we send an idiot fishing to see how dumb the fish are.  If he were actually able to recruit someone I doubt any information they produced would be used as credible.  If you know your target is going to give you bad information and you know exactly which source is bad, what they pass along is almost as vital as your genuine informers.  In this case some fairly low-level State dept employee gets to be the bait.  Poor guy.

Most people can usually entertain more than one position, and follow multiple news developments, or walk and chew gum at the same time. If we all ignored every other thing in the world, to watch the circus bengnazigate;

(1) would that aide or speed the investigation or change the outcome

(2) would that not be the ultimate in 'distraction', from everything else the bastards are up to?

Had to really blow up the "spy kit" picture to see it, but it looks like the item in the top righthand corner is pepper spray. It says "pepper shield" (I think?  It gets grainy).  So that might be the answer right there, he meant to leave his house with his spy kit and grabbed his anti-rape kit instead.

Russia Captures CIA Agent Plotting To Kill Obama

The Federal Security Service (FSB) is reporting today it has captured and arrested an as yet unidentified agent of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) [photos 1-4 left] (since identified as Ryan Fogle, a third secretary at the US Embassy in Moscow) for his clandestine efforts to secure Russian intelligence assets in a plot that could very well be a plan to assassinate President Barack Obama.

Though not confirmed in this report, the Jerusalem Post News Service is reporting that this CIA agent was, also, an employee at the US Embassy in Moscow, which, however, the Americans refused to either confirm or deny.

According to this FSB report, Russian counter intelligence agents began tracking this CIA agent when he first appeared in Moscow in mid April 2011, and even more extensively after he traveled to Benghazi Libya the day following the 11 September 2012 attack on the American consulate which killed the American Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and 3 members of his security detail.

From Libya, this report continues, this CIA agent next appeared in Jordon in late September, 2012, where he was a part of the American intelligence team tasked with supplying Syrian rebels with weapons under a “Secret Order” signed by Obama earlier in the year.

US agents better watch it. years ago, when US was top dog, no trouble recruiting foreigners anxious to leave their home country for pie-in the-sky USA.

Now, foreigners in reasonably good positions in their home country (i.e., excluding the wretched masses)  have to ask themselves whether going to US is such a good deal after all, and maybe get a better deal by staying home.

Reminds me of the song by Petula Clark "Its a sign of the times."

Me thinks the Russians are stirring the pot with a setup. Makes the US (Agency) look like fools. Brennan probably had to go through 37 echelons in Ops just to find out they were not running this guy at all. Lol

All this before Netanyahu comes out to talk to Uncle Vladimir... Beautiful
