IRS Witch-Hunt Congressional Hearing Begins - Live Webcast

Tyler Durden's picture

While unlikley to have the kind of fireworks of Holder and Issa, we suspect President Obama will be biting his nails a little at the inability to control the questions asked here as IRS ex-top-man Steve Miller faces an entirely "bipartisan" questioning into the IRS witchhunts of select political groups.

Witness List

Steve Miller
Acting Commissioner of the
Internal Revenue Service
Testimony

J. Russell George
Treasury
Inspector General for Tax Administration
Testimony

Click image for link to stream...

From Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp:

This hearing provides an opportunity to hear from the private sector about the potential benefits and challenges of these negotiations.  In particular, I hope that we will learn more from our witnesses about the following issues:

1. Addressing traditional barriers to trade, including eliminating tariffs and liberalizing tariff rate quotas.

2. Resolving services and investment barriers and establishing strong rules in these areas that can be jointly promoted in our engagement with other countries.

3. Creating specific commitments and an ongoing agenda to identify and eliminate unnecessary regulatory barriers, including sanitary and phytosanitary barriers to U.S. agriculture exports.  The EU regulatory process is often non-transparent, prevents U.S. stakeholders from participating, and is unpredictable.  An agreement should address the EU’s practices on a comprehensive, horizontal basis.

4. Exploring opportunities for regulatory cooperation and coherence by eliminating redundancy and inefficiency without weakening our respective high standards.

5. Developing and strengthening cooperation regarding our shared concerns with trade and investment policies in third countries, such as anticompetitive behavior from subsidized state-owned enterprises and policies that undermine intellectual property rights.

Stuff like war is what happens when were sitting around watching Dancing With Stars.

NOTE: There's more to this story than most understand; sadly, knee-jerk reaction has set in and people are unlikely to allow for any corrections (in/to logic/facts) to be absorbed.  I knee-jerk too (especially to those in power, and those who want to be in power), but I eventually settle down and apply independent judgment.  Yes, the sound-bite-ness of this has all sorts of really disgusting things, but, as sound-bites typically go, they're primarily sales jobs.

I think a pretty level-headed discussion was from David Clay Johnston:

http://www.democracynow.org/2013/5/16/the_other_irs_scandal_david_cay

NOTE2: Knee-jerkers will likely down-arrow this because of the source.  All I can say is that one ought to focus on messages rather than the messenger.

I stumbled upon this from David Clay Johnston and believe that it's worth considering.  He provides, as much as I can tell, real facts surrounding all of this.  Some refute the "popular" beliefs being pushed out there, some present things that haven't been pushed out.  I think he's being pretty straight up.

NOTE: Those that have a problem with this being from Democracy Now! can walk away and stick their heads in the sand and continue to ignore the "message" because of the "messenger."  I stopped and listened to this because the guy sounded like he had knowledge of things that I did not, and as such I heard plenty that gave me the impression that what he's saying can stand up to strict tests of logic, and This is my measure.

Watched the video. Anyone who tells me IRS agents are the best government employees and that they have a rough job is like Steven Miller. They are full of shit. 70,000 applications for 200 people. 70,000/200 = 350. 52 weeks * working 4 days a week = 208 working days. 350 applications per employee / 208 working days a year = 1.7 applications a day. Holy shit! They had to do almost two applications a day after getting every Friday off! Those poor fucks!

Lois Lerner, the one he mentions was lying to the press?

It must be hard to complete 1.7 applications per day when one has to ask questions such as: "How many times a day do you defecate? Does it come out blue or red?" and "How often do you read ZeroHedge?"

Then there are all those follow-up questions to ask, like "Have you ever heard of the Constitution?"

It ain't easy finding ways to prevaricate on these applications from anti-Progressive whacko extremist groups. Give those poor IRS agents a break.

You are also ignoring the fact that as with most government jobs, most of them are doing nothing more productive than purely supervising the few that do anything at all. This is why we cannot pinpoint any accountability. They are virtually all managers. No one actually does much of anything. Why don't thet just blame it on the congressmen that had sent letters to the IRS demanding that they investigate these conservative groups. But thats right, its not anyones fault. A simple misscommunication/clerical error while pursuing the ever illusive governmental effeciency. As is always the case, from a liberal perspective its OK to break a few eggs in the making of a more perfect utopia. Afterall, tryanny is a non issue to a government that is only here to help, right?

Federal government employment has long been about "Social Justice". Of those 200 employees, a percentage is anencephalic. Another percentage is going through the motions until they are promoted to improve diversity. Another is being harassed by their psychopathic bosses because they want to do things "right" etc. Along with the usual office useless meetings, yakking, romances, ass kissing, petty spats and smoking, bathroom,  coffee breaks, and lunches, there is no time. Does anyone really believe one of the real culprits in the entire U.S. insanity project will go to jail or be totally exposed? I've been at the end of my rope with this cabal of criminals that flood the entire "government" sector (which obviously includes the bankers and other corporate heads). Shortly after Boston I said they had no evidence to convict that young man and they would either have to let him go or they would have to show fabricated evidence, which if fabricated would be about a months time. Sure enough, yesterday they come out with the boat have a message written on it by Dzhokhar. They've had this boat in their possession since they caught him (19th of April)..... I rest my case.

Second question is for the the "teanuts", who in their right mind believes that these organizations had their primary function in social welfare? Lets cut the bullshit, these are all political organizations, nothing more. Or can anyone offer me an explanation that these are not political organizations?

My solution: get rid of the tax exemption for good, for everybody. Why the hell churches get it? You believe in you mumbojambo, you pay for it.

Its so that the gov't has something to hold over the church.  You think about questioning gov't and preaching peace and the end of war, and the end of the MIC, think again.

Churches have been completely complicit in the War on Terror.  And tax exempt status is why.

So this is the law, the IRS spent years back and forth trying to find their way out of a paper bag, they then interpret the law to mean they can ask for what books their reading, Facebook posts, and donor rolls and because people took notice and realized how fucked up this was, the solution should be to scrap the whole thing and raise taxes on churches?

How about we just get rid of the IRS? Then they can't fuck up this badly

As the kabuki theater is played out, the war on America continues..

The most direct attack on America is the expansion of legal immigration to this country.  Almost half the people currently living in the US are here as a result of the Immigration Reform Act of 1965.  The work and student visa program, green cards and refugee programs make illegal immigration look puny.  Contrary to the current meme, our country was not founded by immigrants - it was founded by colonists that forged a new country out of the wilderness for themselves and their posterity.  It is our inheritance and it is being sacrificed at the table of political correctness, just as surely as Esau gave up his inheritance for a pot of stew, Americans are giving up their inheritance for the porridge of a false self-righteousness of "multiculturalism" that is nothing but the death of the American way of life and freedom.

These brainwashed Eurotrash socialists and third world bottom-feeders have no history or tradition of natural rights, and in fact have never heard of the concept, or understand that the Constitution was an attempt to codify those natural God-given rights. They do not understand what our Founders understood - that men who are drawn to centers of power are by nature the worst among us, and that laws are needed to keep them in check. They do not understand or respect that the Constitution was written as a witness against the fallen nature of man, and that it is as timeless man's nature, which has not changed, and will not be out-dated until that nature has become angelic.

The descendants of America's founders are being replaced with a foreign people, and this was by design.  The American gun-owning, freedom-loving middle-class was the biggest obstacle to One-World-Government-equally-distributed-misery plans of the international bankster cartel.  It was no accident that American wages started stagnating in 1970 and have decreased ever since.  Simple supply and demand.  Since that wasn't enough, more jobs were moved overseas and more foreigners were moved in to take the jobs still here.

Ben Johnson said this about the The 1965 Immigration Act in an article for FrontPageMagazine in 2002:

The 1965 Immigration Act: Anatomy of a Disaster By: Ben Johnson FrontPageMagazine dot com | Tuesday, December 10, 2002

"Despite the overwhelming assurances of the bill's supporters, the 1965 Immigration Reform Act has remade society into the image its critics most feared. Immigration levels topping a million a year will increase U.S. population to 400 million within 50 years. Meanwhile, exponents of multiculturalism insist new arrivals make no effort to assimilate; to do so would be "genocidal," a notion that makes a mockery of real genocides. Instead, long-forgotten grudges are nursed against the white populace. Native citizens take to flight as the neighborhoods around them, the norms in their hometowns, are debased for the convenience of low-paid immigrants and well-heeled businessmen. All the while, indigenous paychecks drop through lower wages and higher taxes collected to provide social services for immigrants. And this only takes into account legal immigration.

"Americans must realize demographic trends are not inevitable, the product of mysterious forces beyond their control. Today's population is the result of yesterday's immigration policy, and that policy is as clearly broken as its backers' assurances were facetious. A rational policy will only come about when native Americans place the national interest above liberal howls of 'prejudice' and 'tribalism.'"

Its only gotten worse since Ben penned this article.

At a time when unemployment is at an all time high, "Conservative" Senator Ted Cruz wants to expand legal immigration, most of who will vote Democrat or Big Government Republican once they get here and take your job.

This is a war against the American People and Culture, and the Americans are loosing badly and don't even understand why.  Most Americans blame only illegal immigration which is a fraction of the problem, and miss the bigger picture of legal immigrants.

I often hear people ask the question of how America became such a divided Nation.  Now you know.

America was divided from the beginning. Before the Immigration Act of 1965, Americans of different ethnic and religious backgrounds lived in their own neighborhoods, and looked down on other ethnic and religious groups.  While I do not agree with an “open door” immigration policy, there is more to the “divisions among Americans” than the large influx of “foreigners”.  The biggest division in this country is between the Republicans and the Democrats, and you can thank Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton for this permanent wedge in our nation. And may I also note: they were both white men.

Male vs Female

Black vs White vs Latino

Young vs Old

Rich ($1 billion) vs Poor (under $100k/year)

East vs West vs South vs Midwest

And so on.  Its all a result of Divide and Conquer.  99% of the population has a great deal in common with one another, and absolutely nothing in common with 1% of the population (also the wealthiest, coincidentally)

"Before the Immigration Act of 1965, Americans of different ethnic and religious backgrounds lived in their own neighborhoods, and looked down on other ethnic and religious groups."

This is mostly bullshit. I've done extensive research on this. It's a fact that most immigrant ethnic groups have gradually diffused geographically over a period of generations. There are two notable ethnic groups that have defied this phenomenon: blacks and hispanics. Blacks, in fact, have gone the opposite way over the last century: they have become more geographically concentrated.

Its not just about divisions. It is also about creating and identifying "oppressed groups" that require special considerations. The suspension of immigration laws, welfare benefit enhancements and legal identities, all inorder to buy political support. Its one thing to support one party or another to protect your freedom, but when it is about redistribution and constitutional adaptations, we should all be very very concerned.

By strange coincidence, the History channel is talking about the rise of Hitler.  They just described how he wiped out opposition to him and the National People's Socialist Party by convincing everyone that anyone not with them was against them.  Before the Jews were the point of focus, it was political and vocal opposition that was removed.

I immediately thought about IRS being used to target the Tea Party, thus validating it's significance as a credible, political threat.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Its important to note that Hitler was telling people what they wanted to hear in re: "the Jews".  He wasn't selling them on a belief of his own.  Although I bet you the common German was more upset with Rudolf Havenstein's hyperinflationary actions, than his religious persuasion.  I wonder if criticism of his actions could be deliberately misinterpreted as anti-semitism?

I've heard enough. These guys basically think nothing is wrong. And why should they? The laws are vague. And they're doing as they damn well please. And they're going to take the standard government "if you dont tells me to specifically not do something, don't be surprised by anything that I do."

So can we move this to "because the laws are so vague, the agencies are the ones who interpret the laws and come up with the real regulations on their own. And if you complain, they say 'talk to your congressman'. But in effect, the agencies are making laws that no one is actually agreeing to. They're just being authorized to legislate on their own."

The government is completely broken. No one is agreeing to anything. There's no accountability. And there's nothing you can do about it unless you just wipe things out wholesale.

We can avoid most of the IRS problems by having a flat tax, we'd be able to eliminate 90% of the IRS funding and get the same revenue.   We'd remove the IRS as a political weapon.   We'd remove all the legal loopholes for the super rich for tax avoidance that average Americans cannot afford to implement.

The IRS thing gets even better now.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottgottlieb/2013/05/15/the-irs-raids-60-mi...

The Internal Revenue Service is facing a class action lawsuit alleging that more than 60 million personal medical records were improperly seized by agents from the embattled agency.

According to a story by Courthousenews.com, an unnamed healthcare provider in California is suing the IRS and 15 unnamed agents, alleging that they improperly seized some 60 million medical records of 10 million Americans, including medical records of all California state judges on March 11, 2011.

According to the complaint, the IRS agents had a search warrant for financial data pertaining to a former employee of the “John Doe Company,” however, “it did not authorize any seizure of any healthcare or medical record of any persons, least of all third parties completely unrelated to the matter.”

The medical records included information on psychological counseling, gynecological counseling, sexual and drug treatment, and other sensitive medical treatment data, the suit alleges. A copy of the legal complaint can be purchased here for $35......

Can you say preemptive obamacare record raiding to enforce tax compliance...... Not only preemptive but illegal and wiping their ass all over HIPAA privacy rules in the process. I'm sure grabbing medical records that they had no right or warrants to grab wasn't politically motivated in any manner concerning obamacare or other political reasons. /sarc

Conservatives are being targeted for elimination because in the liberal world any and all opposition must be controlled and discredited to the point they give up and go away. It's why they want your guns, its why they passed obamacare, it's why they want to know what books you read, what you post on Facebook, where you pray, and even who you voted for. Don't believe me well these are just a few of the questions that the IRS agents sent conservative groups.

Fri, 05/17/2013 - 14:41 | 3573673 Dewey Cheatum Howe
Dewey Cheatum Howe's picture

"The IRS scandal can be traced back to a series of letters that the liberal groups Campaign Legal Center (CLC) and Democracy 21 sent to the IRS back in 2010 and 2011. Both groups were funded by George's Soros's Open Society Foundations. The CLC received $677,000 and Democracy 21 got $365,000 from the Soros-backed foundation, according to the Foundation's 990 tax forms.

The letters specifically targeted conservative Super PACs like Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS, asking the IRS to scrutinize them more thoroughly to determine whether or not they should retain their tax-exempt status."

Soros letter to the IRS

http://www.campaignlegalcenter.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=art...

I'm sure this had absolutely nothing to do with this story and subsequent posting of tax exempt forms online by prorepublica.........

https://www.propublica.org/article/controversial-dark-money-group-among-...

"The IRS sent the applications submitted by the five groups to ProPublica in response to a public records request, although the agency is only required to supply these records after groups are recognized as tax-exempt. (ProPublica also obtained the pending application of Crossroads GPS, the dark money group launched by GOP strategist Karl Rove that spent more than $70 million on the 2012 elections, which we wrote about separately.)"

Prorepublica's posting of Crossroads tax exempt form online at the same time.

https://www.propublica.org/documents/item/537045-crossroads-gps-applicat...

Which explains this story ProRepublica put out the other day.

https://www.propublica.org/article/irs-office-that-targeted-tea-party-al...

Before the 2012 election, ProPublica devoted months to showing how dozens of social-welfare nonprofits had misled the IRS about their political activity on their applications and tax returns. Social-welfare nonprofits are allowed to spend money to influence elections, as long as their primary purpose is improving social welfare. Unlike super PACs and regular political action committees, they do not have to identify their donors.

In 2012, nonprofits that didn’t have to report their donors poured an unprecedented $322 million into the election. Much of that money — 84 percent — came from conservative groups.

As part of its reporting, ProPublica regularly requested applications from the IRS’s Cincinnati office, which is responsible for reviewing applications from nonprofits.

Obviously covering their asses on this one. I think we can conclude Soros was either working on behalf of the Oreo or directly for the Oreo to target Crossroads using people inside the IRS. They need to question him closely now. Of course they wont...........

Fri, 05/17/2013 - 15:16 | 3573787 Dewey Cheatum Howe
Dewey Cheatum Howe's picture

If someone on the inside pushes the issue they are going to find out the leak for those tax forms wasn't the IRS to Prorepublica but the IRS to either Campaign Legal Center, Democracy 21, the Center for Public Integrity, Mother Jones or Alternet (all Soros funded groups) and in turn one of those groups leaked the documents to Prorepublica. What makes it even more ilegal is the tax exempt forms weren't approved at the time which making them public record in and of itself is also illegal so not did only both these entities have government records they shouldn't have had Prorepublica took it a step further and posted them online for everyone to see.

The problem here is Big Government. Where were the Tea Party people when antiwar groups (such as Justin Raimondo’s Antiwar.com that they equate with pacifists and Muslim lovers) were being targeted by many branches of government, including at airport security and at their meetings?

Also, many factions on the right say they are for the Constitution and smaller government but they oppose cutting one single penny from the defense budget or the intelligence services. And it must be mentioned that the military, CIA and FBI are the earmarks not only of big government but of surveillance of citizens.

These groups on the right were on board with the Patriot Act and now they are worried that this Big Government monster they helped the Democrats create has the power and the audacity to single them out for IRS persecution. They are not only hypocrites but they are causing this country to go astray as they are led by the Zionists tsunami to sweep the world of Israel’s enemies.

And speaking of the Zionist tsunami, when are we going to get to the IRS Commissioner who really was in charge as the latest scandal was underway – Douglas Shulman on whose watch these crimes were committed?

Shulman, who stepped down on Nov. 9, is the true “IRS ex-top-man,” not Steve Miller.

A good read to put things into perspective is Raimondo’s latest column today on Antiwar.com:"Our Civil Liberties, RIP."

As Raimondo says:The Tea Partiers may be shocked – shocked! – that the Big Government they have spent the last few years complaining about really is a threat to our liberties, but the government targeting certain political groups wholly on account of their views is hardly breaking news…”

This is actually a  civil rights case  and Miller's ignorant rant about targeting individuals for their beliefs is not illegal is going to haunt everyone involved. Furthermore, if there are more than five people working together to violate these company's civil rights; the whole process could turn into a RICO  (organized-crime) case.

if a "political" group believes they should be tax exempt
and that other groups should pay the taxes that they receive
as payment for fulfilling government contracts or other
subsidies than his comment makes perfect sense.
does the population have the right to know the identities
of contributors to "charities" if they are either domestic
or foreign agents? should foreign agents and government
contractors receive tax exempt status?

'I promise the American people this investigation has just begun,' was the final statement.

Make it so with serious consequences for those who abused power - including Miller who worked for the IRS department which committed the offences prior to his promotion to temporary AC of the IRS.  Resigning is insufficient punishment for his failures, and culpability.

Presidential Proclamation -- Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, 2013

Each May, our Nation comes together to recount the ways Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) helped forge our country. We remember a time 170 years ago, when Japanese immigrants first set foot on American shores and opened a path for millions more. We remember 1869, when Chinese workers laid the final ties of the transcontinental railroad after years of backbreaking labor. And we remember Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have made our country bigger and brighter again and again, from Native Hawaiians to the generations of striving immigrants who shaped our history -- reaching and sweating and scraping to give their children something more. Their story is the American story, and this month, we honor them all.

For many in the AAPI community, that story is one also marked by lasting inequality and bitter wrongs. Immigrants seeking a better life were often excluded, subject to quotas, or denied citizenship because of their race. Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders endured decades of persecution and broken promises. Japanese Americans suffered profoundly under internment during World War II, even as their loved ones fought bravely abroad. And in the last decade, South Asian Americans -- particularly those who are Muslim, Hindu, or Sikh -- have too often faced senseless violence and suspicion due only to the color of their skin or the tenets of their faith.

This year, we recognize the 25th anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 and the 70th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act's repeal -- milestones that helped mend deep wounds of systemic discrimination. And with irrepressible determination and optimism, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have prevailed over adversity and risen to the top of their fields -- from medicine to business to the bench. But even now, too many hardworking AAPI families face disparities in health care, education, and employment that keep them from getting ahead.

My Administration remains committed to addressing those disparities. Through the White House Initiative on AAPIs, we are working to ensure equal access to Federal programs that meet the diverse needs of AAPI communities. We are standing up for civil rights, economic opportunity, and better outcomes in health and education. We are fighting for commonsense immigration reform so America can continue to be a magnet for the best and brightest from all around the world, including Asia and the Pacific.

Meeting those challenges will not be easy. But the history of the AAPI community shows us how with hope and resolve, we can overcome the problems we face. We can reaffirm our legacy as a Nation where all things are possible for all people. So this month, as we recognize Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who are fulfilling that promise in every corner of our country, let us recommit to giving our children and grandchildren the same opportunity in the years ahead.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 2013 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. I call upon all Americans to visit http://www.WhiteHouse.gov/aapi andhttp://www.AsianPacificHeritage.gov to learn more about the history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.

BARACK OBAMA

Meanwhile, the IRS within the executive branch headed by the President asked a conservative group: 'What is the content of your prayers?'

Why is this group persecuted while other groups are promoted, contrary to the President's alleged commitment to American values 'in the year of Our Lord 2013' ... and dating back to 2009 according to testimony just heard before Congress on the IRS abuse of power?

Hmmmm?
