As a trapper I pay close attention to how animals react to storms, whether it be tornadoes or hurricanes. Generally speaking they seem to be able to sense and avoid most. Birds can leave the area or shelter in tree trunks. Most ground dwellers up to coyote size shelter in burrows or holes which are very safe. Animals such as deer have a harder time of it, although they seem to be able to find natural shelter on the lee side of ravines and depressions. I've even seen deer killed by lightning strikes before. Beaver. otter and other water dwellers simply hunker down in their dens and ride it out.

Stupid animals get killed early and often, unlike people.

What will get a lot of animals is flooding. They don't seem to have an innate feel for flooding especially since man has altered these patterns with impoundments, dams and controlled releases. Many, many animals are wiped out when they are drowned in their dens because of high water. I see that a lot with nutria.

My biz got hit by a huge  F-4 years ago, double concrete block wall buildings across street and down street were leveled, only thing left was metal pallet racking on a concete slab.

I hope they have underground tornando bunkers when rebuilding, or at least hardened tornado rooms in their homes.   Poured reinforced concrete walls in at least one room.   ICF construction or shotcrete SIP construction which are rated for 150-200mph winds.  It doesn't cost much more to do at least one room or a basement shelter and can save many lives in the future.  God bless their souls.

When children are having peoples shooting them in the schools they are learning, the speaking by many peoples is to do something about so many guns we are having to owned by crazy peoples.  When is a better time to be having talking about guns than the time after a bad thing is happening from guns.

So it it making many smart sense to be talking about the bad thing that is making bad weather terribleness to be happening while the peoples who are not having many smarts to know climate changing is happening because of much bad stuff peoples are doing to the atmosphere.   Republicans are never believing what smart peoples are knowing.

It was the Tuscaloosa tornado that convinced me to get my amaturer radio license. A storm earlier that day had knocked out power, so that night when the tornado hit, the tornado sirens were silent, and most had no warning at all since they had no power.

The local churches combined with local businesses and amatuer radio operators to setup a distribution network that helped thousands of people with food, water and shelter.

Imagine going to bed at night, and getting blown out of your house and waking up in a rainstorm on the ground. Your house, your guns, your preps - everything you own is gone.

FEMA was shit. The Feds were shit. It was local folks helping local folks that made the difference. Many employers gave free vacation days so their employees could take off and assist in the cleanup.

My heart goes out to those people. We were hit last year when Tuscaloosa, Al was struck in the middle of the night. It is truly a horrible, terrifying experience. People went to sleep with normal lives, and many wokeup buried in rubble. Many never wokeup.

It really hurts to see an elementary school filled with so much promise and innocence destroyed for no reason.

May God comfort them in their hour of need.

The only big tornado that almost got us was the Xenia, Ohio monster in April 1974.  All sorts of odd stories came out in the days after it wrecked half the town.  A carved stone in front of a church had a lot of scripture on it, a tree fell on it leaving only these words visible- "Then sudden destruction cometh"

A little girl hid under a bench in front of her house, the tornado took out both houses on either side but left her unscathed, a locomotive was in a field a couple of hundred yards from the tracks. A baby was found alive in a field, but her mother had died in her bath tub.

No warning and BLAM, it's on you.  I hate these things, sudden massive destructive then they just stop.   10 minutes afterward, the weather is just fine, and everyone is stunned.

The US has 90% of the tornadoes on earth.  We reap the whirlwind every spring.
