What Happens After a 70% Stock Market Rally In 6 Months?

Tyler Durden's picture

What happened in Japan last week (a 14% decline after a 85% rally since last fall) is an example of markets getting ahead of the facts on the ground.

How much optimism was priced into the success of Japan’s monetary policy bazooka? As JPMorgan's Michael Cembalest notes, P/E multiples rose from 11x to 17x since last Labor Day, and breakeven inflation implied by (admittedly thin) Japanese JGB-i bond markets rose to 2%, a level Japan has not seen consistently since 1990. On top of that, net long positions on the Tokyo Stock exchange were close to the highest levels in 20 years, and foreign participation in Japanese equity markets was also elevated. It did not take much detailed market research to see that Japan had become a crowded and popular trade.

But what happens next? After a 70% run-up over 6 months, how have stocks performed? The answer may surprise many...

Via JPMorgan's Michael Cembalest,

Another optimism test: how frequent are 70% equity market rallies over just 6 months? The table below shows all the episodes of 70%+ stock market rallies in a six-month time span one can find across major markets throughout history. There aren’t that many, and the color schemes denoting the years in which they occurred show that many of them don’t last.

[So of the 14 episodes in history of a 70% rise over six-months, 10 of those have reversed entirely or collapsed after...]

The mega-experiment will continue in Japan, and I do think that the policy mix in Japan is more aggressive and deeper (including structural reforms) than prior ones. But to me, the easiest money of being long Japanese equities and short Yen has already been made.

And if China slows, Canadian exports slow. If Canadian exports slow, Canadian housing busts even faster.

Canada is so fucked it's scary. If people only knew how crazy the real estate market is in Toronto it's out of control. It is the norm to take a 600k-700k mortgage. Fucking murder house went for 900k +. Guy was beaten to death in it and the fucking thing sold no problem.

I don't know what to think anymore. Nothing makes sense.

Canadian real estate is WAAAY out of line with reality.  I heard one commentator say that it's strong because the banks are in better shape.  Next question is:  Compared to who?  Greece?  Maybe.  But for crying out loud, a house is a place to live, raise a family, enjoy friends, relax, live, and find peace.  The fraudulent bankers turned housing into a trade, selling the idea that flipping can make you money and the idiot public soaked it all up.  At some point, the endless line of fools willing to pay you 120% more than you paid for the shack runs out.

Do any y'all remember Japan in the late 80's?  The reasons for rapidly rising real estate prices were:  Limited land, growing population, growing exports, high GDP....

Guess what I heard them say out of Canada?  High house prices to continue because of "limited land, growing population, growing exports, high GDP, resource-based economy"....

You can't make this shit up, but you can copy someone elses failures.  Looks like Canada is headed the same direction because some of the comments on real estate blogs are horribly bearish now and the H1 sales figures corroborate.  Vancouver is really going to get hit hard, and with the demographics changing, the 2200 sq foot 2-storey will be a dime a dozen.

Seriously, you think I'm that unsophisticated? Really? You think cookies are the key here?

I'm running a proxy, ghostery, adblock, https everywhere, have stealth mode on in my browser and run CCleaner every 4 days. Cookies don't get on my system, ever.

If Google takes note of you, they take your MAC address and start gleaming the cube from your ISP.

At this point, I accept their interest as a pay-off for their services, as they're very useful. I should probably do more <fast mode data trawls / connective web production> but I get so bored when you don't need to do it. It'd be fun, if the people running the algos weren't so boring and limited.

I dont understand how that would be possible. the MAC address is removed and replaced as the packets travel through the different networks.

Thu, 05/30/2013 - 05:32 | 3609695 Aurora Ex Machina
Aurora Ex Machina's picture

It makes about as much sense as suggesting cookies were to blame for a certain class of user. However, let's just say there's much hungrier things under the hood these days, who have learnt how to read intent. A lesson: how do you detect a submarine? Or a Stealth Bomber? By what is not there, just as much as what is.

Remember Facebook's Shadow profiles? (Warning: PDF - 2011). That's baby level stuff; if you want to conceptualize it, take all posters who log into ZH, analyze their posting patterns (language, semantics, reading level required etc - and not at basic levels, at this kind of level), their reading habits (clicks, how long / page on average, even cursor position) and their track-backs (where they link from, where they link to, what other tabs they have open etc etc).

Then you'll get close to the levels that modern algos are running on you. If you sometimes find my posts insane, or they're conceptually odd, or linguistically / stylistically mimicking other forms, that's a strategy, for breaking the bubble.

well look - did you send your replies on zerohedge THROUGH google? Do you have rogue programs running on your computer? What OS are you running?

I'm having none of these problems so what do you think is happening?

I'm even logged INTO google so that if I use it to search it WILL try to use prior matches to find relevant material. However, I typically don't see this because I typically use the firefox search-bar which I set default to google - no checking as I type - and it can switch to other things like imdb, wikipedia, youtube (yes, google, but not the same as a generic web search obviously), duckduckgo and so on.

I'm having NONE of the problems you are, or are worried about.

Are you running noscript? That thing's very handy. By default you should test to disable every script-site possible until the site works with zero or just 1 or 2 of them at most on and leave it that way.

Here on zerohedge I have enabled the obvious zerohedge.com and disabled (permanently) these:

statcounter.com

google-analytics.com

googlesyndication.com

quantserve.com

investingchannel.com

doubleclick.net

and all ads are blocked by adblock (which I remember you mentioned you are using).

Could it be that scripts are running on your end from google-analytics.com or googlesyndication.com?

You're already compromised then; modern vectors don't show up like that.

In other words, what we are dealing with here is a very rare kind of malware – the so-called ‘fileless’ malicious programs that do not exist as files on the hard drive but operate only in the infected computer’s RAM. The best known examples of such threats are the CodeRed and Slammer worms, which caused mass outbreaks at the beginning of the last decade...

This kind of malware only remains operational until the operating system is restarted, but in this case this is not a critical issue for the Trojan’s authors...

Because no file is written to the hard drive, it becomes much harder to detect the problem using antivirus software. If the exploit is not detected, the bot can be successfully loaded into RAM, becoming virtually invisible.[Source]

This year's Black Hat security conference has turned out some interesting exploits, but Jonathan Brossard's Rakshasa malware might be one of stealthiest we've seen yet. It works using modified open source tools like Coreboot and SeaBIOS to overwrite your PC's existing BIOS (the firmware that controls the low level functions of a computer) and opens the door for even more malicious software.

Kon-Boot is one example of software that can be downloaded once the Rakshasa exploit is in place, and it can bypass the password prompt of both Windows and OS X, giving a hacker access to user-level files. Because Rakshasa infects a computer at its lowest level it can't be detected by anti-virus programs, and even if it could, Brossard's exploit has built-in protection measures to keep it from being overwritten. There are currently 230 motherboards that are vulnerable to the exploit, and as the open source community improves Coreboot and SeaBIOS's hardware compatibility, more are likely to become vulnerable over time. If you'd like to know more about how Rakshasa works, Brossard's extremely technical presentation from Def Con 20 has everything you need to know.[source - good videos]

Rakshasa has an interesting mythological history, as a tangent.

If it makes you feel happy, think you're secure. I don't claim to be a tech ninja, but even I know I'm not.

oh, that's the key difference. I'm running Ubuntu Linux. No, it's not compromised - everything is compiled from source.

Sorry for your luck.

At some point I'll have the next level of security set up that everything runs off RAMdisk and there is no hard drive at all. There's nowhere for any virus to run or hide and I'm sure I do not have one of those "compromised motherboards".

As if they could read my ext4fs and further the hard drive portions using cryptfs.

Not a chance, not all compiled from source.

no, the routers all pass along the original packet unless there's a special (exceptional) reason to hide this (tor, perhaps, vpn's) but the original packet contents normally do arive including the MAC of the originator. You can edit the MAC before transmission, and do so frequently, but whatever you set it to will be sent. It's in the IP part of the protocol layer.

There's two schools of thought here:

Either be a tech ninja (linux, the full spectrum, which Urban Redneck was suggesting) at which point you'll start attracting the fisher-kings who operate like the Diamond Dogs faery tale warning...

or don't be, and use other survival strategies.

Paradoxically, using some forms of protection (such as DNScrypt) while running Windows or using a Mac will make you an easier target (as you'll assume you're safe, when you're not). Realistically the net (especially the deep web which is pitch black in tone) is a game run by something other than yourself. View it like sex ~ there's acceptable levels of protection, but you're never going to be 100% risk free, and getting heavily into the kink scene without knowing about safe words is a serious risk.

Lions, Tigers and Bears, remember? Oh, and careful of those links - unless you're Epic Level, read the Reynolds tale first before poking around.

Personally, I just assume everything is compromised.

The contempt vote just passed by the House of Representatives against Eric Holder, make no mistake, is because the documents he refused to produce lead directly into the White House, probably to Rahm Emanuel.

The abuse of this administration is historic in that the Obama Administration carried into power radical elements determined to force Americans into a mold that they could control; and Fast and Furious was clearly designed to impact the Second Amendment and the right of Americans to freely own firearms, i.e., the means to protect themselves against a tyrannical government.

When critical documents like these are withheld it’s hard to believe that an attorney general is withholding them only because of his own involvement.

Please, quit the fucking rah-rah-rah for your team, it's dull, ignorant and is so badly misunderstanding Power at the moment it makes you look like an idiot. Never forget the moment Dole came to the Senate to beg for a harmless bill and got snubbed, and "your side" owed that man.

Shame, shame, shame on you!.

Bubbles, bubbles, in the air.

Floating here, floating there,

Massive bubbles, do you care?

Ben doesn't, Wall Street don't,

Rape the people, rope the dope.

Ramp that thang, savings won't,

Earn a penny, but please have hope (?).

Ben has his finger in the hole,

Plugging the Dyke, he'll make it right.

Never mind those on the dole.

And don't you put up a fight (right?).

Just buy the DOW, a managed fund,

Pay your fees, and taxes please.

Trust in the FED wunderkund,

It's only money, kind of like peas.

By the way, that finger in the Dyke?

It's up yours, and your little tykes'.

So get to work you silly mules,

If it weren't for you we'd have no fools.

The future collapse seems a little less threatening after worrying about it for 5 years. It now comes with a 10,000 mile stare of indifference. It will be fine and a lot different than anything you expect. The only thing I expect to happen is that the elite will crumble faster than they ever could imagine. We will then quickly move to a period of great prosperity.

Silly Japan... they did what they always do... try and copy what the US is doing and hope for the best.  But it looks like they forgot that the last time they played that game it resulted in the Plaza Accord and sent their economy into a "lost decade" which has lasted some 3 decades now.

This should be amusing to watch it all unwind.

I'm reading Didier Sornette's book, Why Stock Markets Crash, an arcane and highly scientific approach to stock market bubbles. I had to get it through interlibrary loan. I highly recommend it to all! He explains that certain conditions exist that make asset bubbles more predictable than many people think.

We are now witnessing a textbook case of another bubble fueled by Bernanke's BubbleFed (as I call it).

This week, I also finished reading David Stockman's 700-page tome, The Great Deformation, which is one of the best books I've read to date on historical finance.Stockman, as do I, believes that a calamity in the not-too-distant future is a near certainty. I saw him in a lecture in which he expects that calamity in the next 2-3 years!

I'm convinced that another popping bubble is not far distant. Calamity is certainty. Plan and prepare accordingly!

Insanity is the new norm. Fundamentals don't have a look in until the final blow up and then everyone will be asking themselves what they were thinking as they stared at the markets rising.

That little prick Schauble tryig to make out as if Spain is on track makes me want to throw up. People are in misery and he waxes lyrical about the Spanish government.

Canada's real estate is a bug in search of a windshield although Australia might get there first.

Japan is walking a tight rope made of razor wire.

The US is using whatever muscle it has to maintain a facade that is increasingly looking like toppling. The nation's endowment has been well and truly wasted. It is turning itself into one massive Guantanamo Bay.

Everyone is fuc...in thinking about their capital gains while not giving a shit about the young who have no job and if they do they still cannot aford to buy the house without commiting themselves to a beyond death mortgage.

The people running governments, bureaucracies, banks and he like are getting creepier by the day.
