Britain To Arm Syrian Rebels; Russia Retaliates By Shipping 10 MiGs To Assad

Tyler Durden's picture

Following Russia's first shipment of S-300 Rockets and the CNN-reported deaths of American and British citizens, it seems the situation in Syria is escalating 'behind-the-scenes' with little attention being paid in general. Whether it is the deaths or not, but according to the FT, the 'war-by-proxy' is growing in numbers as the UK is poised to ship arms to some rebel factions in Syria as soon as this summer. "The precise timing has not yet been finalized and no decision has yet been taken. But we are likely to be ... shipping arms to the rebels by August," one official noted, adding that "the rebels need ammunition, and a lot of it, just to keep fighting." The US had secretly undertaken significant lobbying efforts of EU member states to get the EU arms embargo amended and this week Britain and France forced through that deal opening the door for the supply of weapons. Adding to the angst, Russia's MiG aircraft makers said on Friday that it planned to sign a new agreement to ship at least 10 fighter jets to Syria.

Via The FT,

Britain and France this week forced through an amendment to an EU arms embargo that opened the door for the supply of weapons to opposition forces.

...

Britain’s Foreign Office insists that no final decision on whether to arm the rebels has yet been made. But a senior UK diplomat told the Financial Times that Britain could be in a position to arm the rebels this summer if, as many expect, the planned peace conference in Geneva fails to make headway.

“The precise timing has not yet been finalised and no decision has yet been taken. But we are likely to be ... shipping arms to the rebels by August,” the official said. “What I expect is that over the next two or three months western powers will move low-grade arms supplies in bulk to the rebels. The rebels need ammunition, and a lot of it, just to keep fighting.”

...

Syrian rebel sources are also saying they are expecting the first new arms supplies to come from Britain as early as this summer.

...

Russia’s MiG aircraft maker said on Friday that it planned to sign a new agreement to ship at least 10 fighter jets to Syria, a move that comes amid international criticism of earlier Russian weapons deals with the Assad regime,

...

Russia has said it is only providing Assad with weapons intended to protect Syria from a foreign invasion, such as air defence missile systems.

...

Syria now is Russia’s last remaining ally in the Middle East and hosts the only naval base Moscow has outside the former Soviet Union.

I heard this too from an RAF instructor who had done a few secondments to the ME. However the context was that the Saudi pilots were chosen by family connection over aptitude, while the more correctly selected Jordanians were extremely able.

The British were finished as soon as they let a half-American into government in 1905 and Jennie Jerome's son sold the country down the river through his francophile Germanophobia over the next 40 years. As an American I lived in UK (Surrey, outside London for about 4 years).

Hence, Frances response to WW II. Basically, what's the point.

Socialism is what socialists believe to be the best way of survival. They might be right for their fellow socialists, but not for the majority who are non-believers.

The non-believers have their own particular beliefs in what is the best way for survival. My belief is that everyone should be allowed to live by their beliefs under panarchism.

After all, everyone is entitled to their own beliefs.

Who helped create and spread extremist islam? Ah yes, America and Saudi Arabia when they wrote textbooks teaching extremist wahabist islam and sent them all over Pakistan's madrassas (religious schools) in the 80s to brainwash the local muslim population to go fight the Soviets in Afghanistan.... thing is... those schools were never closed and textbooks never destroyed after the Soviets withdrew...

California Senate Approves Background Checks, Permits and Fees for Ammunition Purchases
May 31, 2013 - 9:38 AM

The California Senate this week approved a collection of bills, including one (SB 53) that would require background checks, permits, and fees for the purchase of ammunition.

All ammunition sales would have to be face-to-face, happening only in the presence of a store clerk; and vendors selling the bullets would have to submit sales records to the California Department of Justice. Those vendors also would need a permit to sell ammunition.

SB 53 is one of seven “gun violence” bills approved on Wednesday. Together, the seven Democrat-sponsored bills are known as the “Lifesaving Intelligent Firearms Enforcement Act,” dubbed the LIFE Act.

The other six bills comprising the LIFE Act include:

Fixed magazines: SB 374 (Steinberg): Prohibits the future sale, purchase, manufacture, importation, or transfer in California of semi-automatic rifles that can accept detachable magazines. It also expands ownership records, ensuring all handguns and long guns with detachable magazines are recorded. “This legislative action decisively closes the loopholes that have allowed the gun industry to flood our communities with rapid-reload battlefield weapons,” Steinberg said. Passed on a 23-15 vote.

High Capacity magazines: SB 396 (Hancock): Bans possession of ammunition magazines over 10 rounds. Passed on a 25-14 vote. “California has good regulations, but gun manufacturers have found ways around them,” Sen. Loni Hancock said. “This bill closes the loopholes that allowed the discharge of large amounts of ammunition without reloading and will make our state a safer place.”

Bullet button: SB 47 (Yee): Bans modification tools that allow magazines to be rapidly detached and replaced on semi-automatic rifles. Passed on a 23-15 vote.

Shotgun Definition: SB 567 (Jackson): Updates the definition of a banned shotgun with a revolving cylinder to include the new technology of a shotgun-rifle combination. Passed on a 22-15 vote.

APPS Expansion: SB 755 (Wolk): Expands the Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS) by adding additional drug and alcohol offenses. Passed on a 25-14 vote.

Fire arm safety certificate: SB 683 (Block): Expands the current handgun safety certificate to all new gun purchases, ensuring all new gun owners have a basic training and understanding of how their new firearm works. “It makes no sense to require safety certificates only for buyers of handguns but not of those buying rifles or shotguns,” Sen. Marty Block said. Passed on a 28-11 vote.

The LIFE Act bills now move to the Democrat-controlled Assembly, which has passed different gun control bills of its own.

Lots of concern about this story, eh!

Here is the real issue Russia is angry about. They DO NOT want to see Sarin Gas used in Syria, so these actions are meant to give Syria a chance to defend herself from any more belligerent zionist invaders from isreal. If America was attacked like isreal attacked Syria, would that be condoned and accepted as alright? Everybody knows the babylonians are using isreal to start the third world war. They will prolly do a nuke on Damascus as prophesied, or according to the stage play written and foretold in the past. Brother Stair has been saying for years that Damascus will be nuked. It looks more and more possible now, than it did ten years ago. What is crazy to think about is why in the world of hurt would a rogue apartheid murderous zionist nation detonate a nuke in Damascus when it is in such a close proximity to their own people and country? Do they think that they will escape the fallout from such a blast in that region? Does anyone?? It only takes a match to light a forest fire that will destroy centuries of civilization and human advancement. IF this warmongering is allowed to continue, then those who want this darkness will certainly be consumed by it also. There is no escape from Karmic Justice for anyone. You reap what you sow.

You mean, freedom from dictatorships, to live where and as you please (within reasonable laws), to build your own life free of government controls down to your food, car, and children?  Is that what you mean?

Or do you mean saving the world TWICE in WWI and WWII? Do you mean saving Germany and Japan from insane men and setting them FREE to develop their OWN free countries? Or maybe you mean setting France free from Hitler?

Perhaps you mean giving trillions of US dollars in aid to other countries for the past 75 or so years?

America has become a socialist, communist nation, so you should be happy.  But it has also been the MOST free country in the world.

Re Britain To Arm Syrian Rebels...

What's Pretext Du Jour this time?

Oops - almost forgot! This is Perfidious Albion we're talkin about! No reason required - as long as a "few quid" can be made on the side.

Besides they probably just found a couple of cases of Lee-Enfield (single-bolt action, WWI-vintage) rifles in the basesment of the Minisitry of Defence.

And had no idea what to do with 'em, until some bright spark suggested giving them to the rag-tag rag-heads and invoicing Uncle Sam as if they were supplying boat-loads of Challenger tanks.

All accompanied , of course, by a trembling lower-lip - a la Tony Blair - at the plight of the innocent civilians being, gassed, cannibalised, Guantanamo'ed  et al by current Govt.

Yup - when it comes to Waiving The Rules, and doin' the Soft-Shekel-Shuffle  Perfidious A. is right up there with the best of em - right up there with Uncle Sam hisself ;)

Wake me when Russia declares a no fly zone.  A "no fly zone"  a statement of intent to sieze and hold airspace.  Then the "freedom fighters" get their laser designators- a safe move since they cant be used against NATO after hostilities end- and anything they want to go boom goes boom.  Game over.  You could give kim kardashian a laser designator and with a no fly zone she could take Damascus.  The Migs and the s300s will be gone a week after the no fly zone is declared.   The only thing that could possibly stop NATO from establishing a no fly zone is Russia committing a significant portion of their air assets to sieze and dominate Syrian airspace and they are not going to do it. Homy dont play that.  Syria will fall. Iran will fall. TPTB want them homogonized and there is no one with enough juice that is willing to end the world in a nuclear war for their sakes.  Russia would do it for the Ukraine, no one doubts that but they are not going to take on NATO for syria and Iran.  If Russia ever takes on NATO it will be in a way that so characterizes their fighting style, they will commit all assets. TPTB know that and dont want it so Russia will get a slice of the pie.  Thats business.
