Meanwhile, In Turkey...

Tyler Durden's picture

While most of the headlines this week have centered on Syria, Sweden (and Switzerland), Turkey has been cooking and today has broken into full-scale riots. As Reuters reports, Turkish police fired tear gas and water cannon on Friday at demonstrators in central Istanbul, wounding scores of people and prompting rallies in other cities in the fiercest anti-government protests for years. The growing unrest centers on disquiet at the authoritarianism of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (who just visited Obama). "We do not have a government, we have Tayyip Erdogan ... Even AK Party supporters are saying they have lost their mind, they are not listening to us." The protests somewhat surprisingly were sparked by the uprooting of trees but rapidly escalated (as seen below) into riot police, water cannon, and tear gas battles as protesters exclaim, "we're fed up... we don't like the direction the country is heading."

Via Reuters:

Thousands of demonstrators massed on streets surrounding Istanbul's central Taksim Square, long a venue for political unrest, while protests erupted in the capital Ankara and the Aegean coastal city of Izmir.

...

The unrest reflects growing disquiet at the authoritarianism of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP).

...

There have also been protests against the government's stance on the conflict in neighboring Syria, a tightening of restrictions on alcohol sales and warnings against public displays of affection.

"We do not have a government, we have Tayyip Erdogan ... Even AK Party supporters are saying they have lost their mind, they are not listening to us," said Koray Caliskan, a political scientist at Bosphorus University who attended the protest.

"This is the beginning of a summer of discontent."

The protest at Taksim's Gezi Park started late on Monday after trees were torn up under a government redevelopment plan but has widened into a broader demonstration against Erdogan's administration. Friday's violence erupted after a dawn police raid on demonstrators who had been camped out for days.

"This isn't just about trees anymore, it's about all of the pressure we're under from this government. We're fed up, we don't like the direction the country is headed in," said 18-year-old student Mert Burge, who came to support the protesters after reading on Twitter about the police use of tear gas.

"We will stay here tonight and sleep on the street if we have to," he said.

...

But Erdogan brooks little dissent. Hundreds of military officers have been jailed for plotting a coup against him in recent years. Academics, journalists, politicians and others face trial on similar charges.

...

"These people will not bow down to you" read one banner at the Gezi Park protest, alongside a cartoon of Erdogan wearing an Ottoman emperor's turban.

Postings on social media including Twitter, where "Occupy Gezi" - a reference to protests in New York and London last year - was a top-trending hashtag, and Facebook said similar demonstrations were planned for the next few days in other Turkish cities including Ankara, Izmir, Adana and Bursa.

Actually there are a lot of guns in Turkey

There is a classic saying among Turks that every man needs 3 things ... a wife, a gun and a horse. Nowadays, an automobile substitutes for a horse, but marriage and guns are still very popular

Americans always think they are the only ones with guns ... and aren't noticing how easily the US regime has been confiscating guns in their 'tests', in New Orleans after Katrina, this year in Boston with the bombings, and via all those new US laws on who can own (confiscating guns from military veterans who have had psychological help, for example)

---

Privately owned guns in Europe are in the tens of millions

We have shooting clubs here in Brussels, where people like myself enjoy shooting .45 pistols etc. - Great American gun designer John Browning died in Belgium, while working on manufacturing guns here

In our little Belgium: 2 million civilian privately owned handguns, shotguns, rifles

Germany has 25 million civilian privately owned handguns, shotguns, rifles

France: 19 million civilian privately owned handguns, shotguns, rifles ... And so on.

We do not carry them around, or have as high gun ownership rates as in the US, but we have enough.

Yes, the crazy UK Brits confiscated all privately owned handguns in the 1990s - But they are extremists, suffering from the Anglo-American over-legalism disease.

It is not like that on the Continent. Here we know the Nazis can come back, older people here still remember the last time the Nazis were occupying when they were children

Portugal has probably one of the more restrictive laws, yet latest police estimates were of around 3 million guns for a population of 10.5 mil, with a 50/50 split between legally (mostly hunting and small caliber pistols up to legal limit of 6.35mm) and illegally owned guns (anything, from converted alarm guns, up to smg, full auto rifles with high power scopes, silencers, laser target acquisition, etc.).

turkey [ottoman empire] was dragged into wwi by germany because of their being trading-partners amongst other details i won't elaborate upon at this moment. but suffice to say... wwi was brought about to get israel/palestine from the ottoman's, period. read the 'balfour declaration' [white paper]' re: lord rothschild.

in fact, that is why wilson brought us into wwi because the german's were starting to turn things around and began winning much lost ground. rothschild's/ morgan couldn't have that?  **** [kinda like syria and bashar al-assad today[regarding saddam's wmd... nukes and chemical weapons drummed up by the ussa's propaganda-machines 'imagination'!]

Both sides pretty much ran out of men to fight by 3rd Ypres, and the French were negotiating an armistace after their army started to munity.  It was false flags like the Luisitania (uncoded telgraph transmissions of the ships whereabouts) that helped Wilson's case.

Starting WWI to get Israel from the Ottomans, that's the first time I heard that.  Using the Fed to lend money to both sides and ensure US financial domination for a century, I'll buy.  Misguided alliances, colonial competition, population growth, fomenting the Bolshevik revolution...I'll buy those, too.   In 1914, but British could have just sent some ships and army and ended the Ottoman Empire if it wanted to, as long as they didn't land in Gallipoli.

"what do the European governments feed to their populations to keep them subdued?"

For twenty years the Eurocrats fed money to the populations. Everywhere you went in the periphery (and Ireland was BIG in this scam) there were huge billboards advertising the largesse doled out by the centre, and a huge number of people benefitted, some by having a job where there was none before; some by earning twice what they had earned before; and a few creaming the top off and living the good life. For some reason which I do not understand the memory of the largesse lingers still and kindles a little hope that it may come again. And I think that is why there has not been very much unrest, so far.

Then again, I told you I played GO, while You said you played Chess then told me I was dead.

Reborn just outside of Hell while spelunking the dripping vagina, found a dead seagull in there. Cried; water is life; reborn? Perhaps. Matriarchy is perhaps a better road: at least it'd be less boring. That's the real charge: boredom.

Not Sisyphus (although, forgetting Camus' Revolt even when given it on paper is a large error), but boredom with interactions.

I think the original purgatory was based on grey flat 2D planes of boredom, but this is just from memory. It's someone's mythology, anyhow. Might even be a Terry Pratchett bad guy's fate.

From an email I got today. I'm not so sure about giving them all of the Subaru wagons. Hopefully that doesn't make me a liberal sympathizer or anything.

Fw:

Interesting concept!

Since we are not going to get gasoline back to $1.50 per gallon and coffee to $2.00 per pound maybe this would be a solution we could live with.

DIVORCE AGREEMENT  -- This is so incredibly well-put, and I can hardly believe it's by a young person, a student!! Whatever he runs for, I'll vote for him!

 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, regressive, Marxists, and Obama supporters, et. al.:

We have stuck together since the late 1950s for the sake of the kids, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run its course.

Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right for us all, so let's just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way.

Here is a model separation agreement: 1. Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by land mass, each taking a similar portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy. Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides had such distinct and disparate tastes.

2. We don't like redistributive taxes, so you can keep them.

3. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU.

4. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA, and the military.

5. We'll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and you can go with wind,
 solar, and bio-diesel.

 6. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore, and Rosie O'Donnell. You are,
however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to
move all three of them. 7. We'll keep capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart, and Wall Street.

8. You can have your beloved lifelong welfare dwellers, food stamps, homeless homeboys, hippies, druggies, and illegal aliens.

9. We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO's and rednecks.

10. We'll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood .

11. You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us.

12. You can have the peace-niks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we'll help provide them security.

13. We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values.

14. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, political correctness, and Shirley McLain. You can also have the U.N., but we will no longer be paying the bill.

15. We'll keep the SUV's, pickup trucks, and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.

16. You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors.

17. We'll continue to believe healthcare is an earned luxury and not a right.

18. We'll keep "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The National Anthem."

19. I'm sure you'll be happy to substitute "Imagine", "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing", "Kum Ba Ya," or "We Are the World".

20. We'll practice trickledown economics and you can continue to give trickle up poverty your best shot.

21. Since it often so offends you, we'll keep our history, our name  and our constitution and our flag.

22. Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other like-minded liberal and conservative patriots and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I'll bet you answer which one of us will need whose help in 15 years. 23. (My addition) You can also keep your lenient sentences and quick paroles for repeat violent criminals as well... Please.  - Man charged with killing couple, raping toddler hours after release from prison Sincerely,
John J. Wall
Law Student and an American

P.S.: Also, please take Ted Turner, Sean Penn, Martin Sheen, Barbara  Streisand, and Jane Fonda with you.

P.S.S..: And you won't have to "Press 1 for English" when you call our country.

Forward this every time you get it! Let's keep this going; maybe some  of it will start sinking in!

** If you can't stand behind our Military, Please feel free to stand  in front of them!  **
