For Whom The Bell Tolls

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mark J. Grant, author of Out of the Box,

“For him it was a dark passage which led to nowhere, then to nowhere, then again to nowhere, once again to nowhere, always and forever to nowhere, heavy on the elbows in the earth to nowhere, dark, never any end to nowhere, hung on all time always to unknowing nowhere, this time and again for always to nowhere, now not to be borne once again always and to nowhere, now beyond all bearing up, up, up and into nowhere, suddenly, scaldingly, holdingly all nowhere gone and time absolutely still and they were both there, time having stopped and he felt the earth move out and away from under them.”

-Ernest Hemingway, "For Whom the Bell Tolls"

The European Union is leading the nations of Europe nowhere. They have sat there and languished in their own self-adoration, propped up their egos on self-congratulation and flounced recitals of praise fluffed and huffed by one politician and told to another. They have a central bank promising what cannot be delivered and they have used up all of their capital to buy the debt they have created to support the artifice. Then having mutilated the pension funds of their citizens and having pressured every money manager on the Continent they congratulate themselves on their lower yields.

"Yet the first bringer of unwelcome news hath but a losing office, and his tongue sounds ever after as a sullen bell, remembered tolling a departing friend."

                 -William Shakespeare, "Henry IV"

They say it is improved financial sustainability; I say it is chicanery. They see a road without end; I can see the end. They congratulate themselves; I yawn as the mumbo jumbo continues. The spice must flow and so it does but they are now consuming more than is being produced and I can smell the coming storm and the signs of the forthcoming giant sandworm abound.

“When religion and politics travel in the same cart, the riders believe nothing can stand in their way. Their movements become headlong - faster and faster and faster. They put aside all thoughts of obstacles and forget the precipice does not show itself to the man in a blind rush until it's too late.”

                 -Frank Herbert, "Dune"

They honey is the ability to trade with each other. The vinegar is the cauterization if anyone leaves. Germany prospers. Everyone else suffers. The unemployment rate hits 12.2% which is a concocted number far below actuality but that is what they say, that is what is believed, but our old friend reality always has a funny way of showing up when you least expect him.

In France they now have 3.26 million unemployed with two uninterrupted years of monthly rises in their unemployment rate and a 1.2% increase from March. Nearly 337,000 more people are out of work in France than there were when Hollande was elected in May 2012. Unemployment is Spain at 26.8%, some 6.2 million people out of work while the economy has shrunk -1.3% in the last two quarters. Italy's economy is projected to shrink by -1.8% this year according to the OECD while their unemployment rate hits 12%, a thirty-six year high. Besides Germany these are the pillars of the European Union and that union is crumbling.

Stick your nose up into the wind.

Smell!

The stench is overwhelming.

"At the great iron gate of the churchyard he stopped and looked in. He looked up at the high tower spectrally resisting the wind, and he looked round at the white tombstones, like enough to the dead in their winding-sheets, and he counted the nine tolls of the clock-bell."

             -Charles Dickens, "Our Mutual Friend"

France will never default and leave the EU without being thrown out. It would have to admit, the European Union was a failure and as one of the founding members it is much too arrogant to do so. The rest of the EU (PIIGS and other countries with financial problems) may default and leave the EU, but France will remain until the end. It is the way of the French.

I'm saying they will default when Germany leaves the EU and they have to either issue their own currency, or print more Euros to pay down its debt (another form of default).

But they won a Nobel prize so that is an accomplishment.  Well it used to be.  Soon the unemployed will get a Nobel Prize for not rioting.

Actually, I'm going to vote for France capitulating to German demands until the UK gets sick and tired of appeasing the EU and blows the whole sorry mess to pieces by leaving and growing their economy at a record pace. At which point the people of France will be grateful for their sovereignty back.

I've seen this film before.

The people of France have no sovereignty to get back. We can trace their lack of sovereignty back to Roman times, for fuck's sake.

It's the move towards globalization in general where they can pay people in another country pennies on the dollar to do your job for cheaper. TPTB also import labor for a discount, so they don't need to pay you more money. It's happening all over the world. They decided they don't need a middle class anymore. It's time to get by on your own and ignore the ridiculous laws and regulation designed to not allow you to do so.

I'm not sure that globalization would be all that bad if not for the immoral monetary system in which it resides. There would be no market in which to sell shitty needless goods if it weren't financed through the constant expansion of debt. The cost to service the debt extracts productive labor from the equation and hammers the margins driving the need for ever cheaper labor. And on a separate though equally importat note, globalization is also built on th back for cheap and abundant energy. Neither rising debt nor cheap energy are sustainable. Those who wish for the end of globalization will be rewarded. Careful for what you wish.

The EU worked so well there's still fucking idiots that want to form the N. America union.  All they need to do is get the EU to hold, join us in the US with canada and mexico then they'll have 2 big blocks.  Then finish destroying the middle east and somehow get russia and china to go along with all of this.  Boy are we fucked or what?

Unless Germany and the other rich western European countries (no offense there are too many to list [it would be like Americans asking you to list all of the US's smallest states]) allow debt forgiveness, the EU is finished. A lot of the countries are stuck in a rut and won't be getting out while in the EU.

Nonsense.  The EU has worked out just fine. You simply don't understand or acknowledge the actual objective.  The EU isn't some utopic ideal to bring peace, love and prosperity to Europeans. The end objective is one europe unified under German leadership. A fourth reich if you will.  Why fight a world war and waste all those resources when you can achieve the same thing through political and economic subterfuge?

no, there's a group of people from different nationalities (incl. germans), who are trying to pull all power towards themselves.

the end objective is a totalitarian state, but nationality has NOTHING to do with it. in fact, the nation state is in their way, as it resembled (at some times) a real chance for the people to exert some power and influence on descisions.

get with the program it's not 1939 anymore.

Stop it! Just STOP IT!! The EU won a Nobel Peace Prize for all of their wisdom, diligence, sacrifice and hard work! You will NOT be allowed to mock them! If you do, that other guy with the Nobel Peace Prize will authorize someone to fly a drone over to your house and kill your ass- all in the name of openness, transparency and of course, peace.

The EU is the first test of a strong regional government that eases trade restrictions among its members. The plan is to go from there to form other regional blocks around the globe, then use them as stepping stones to a global government.

The international corporations are the only ones who benefit from this, and historically they have always been pushing for more national integration, such as in Germany and Italy in the late 1800's.

I suspect this latest plan is a bridge too far for the international oligarchs and we will all wind up loosley united from efforts to throw them out rather than united under their leadership.

Since we're doing Dune:

To create change you find leverage points and move them. Beware blind alleys. Offers of high positions are a common distraction paraded before marchers. Leverage points are not all in high office. They are often at economic or communications centers and unless you know this, high office is useless.
