Meet PRISM / US-984XN - The US Government's Internet Espionage Super Operation

Tyler Durden's picture

The disclosures involving this (and the prior) administration's Big Brother surveillance state, which would make Nixon blush with envy are now coming fast and furious (one wonders - why now: even that bastion of liberalism the NY Times, has turned against Obama). Although while the Guardian's overnight news that Verizon (and most certainly AT&T as well among others) was cooperating with the NSA on spying on US citizens, so far at least the internet seemed, if only to the great unwashed masses, immune. That is no longer the case following news from the WaPo exposing PRISM, a highly classified program, which has not been disclosed publicly before. "Its establishment in 2007 and six years of exponential growth took place beneath the surface of a roiling debate over the boundaries of surveillance and privacy." What PRISM does is to allow the NSA and the FBI to tap directly "into the central servers of nine leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting audio, video, photographs, e-mails, documents and connection logs that enable analysts to track a person’s movements and contacts over time."

The secrecy is so deep we expect even the president himself may not know about it (but he does):

The highly classified program, code-named PRISM, has not been disclosed publicly before. Its establishment in 2007 and six years of exponential growth took place beneath the surface of a roiling debate over the boundaries of surveillance and privacy.  Even late last year, when critics of the foreign intelligence statute argued for changes, the only members of Congress who know about PRISM were bound by oaths of office to hold their tongues.

Of course, PRISM is from the government, and it is here to help you. But the question is why are some of the biggest private companies explicitly collaborating with what is now the biggest exposed spying operation in history, companies which include such household names as Microsoft Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, and Apple. Yes, everyone's beloved Apple was added in October 2012: the NSA knows all about your music playlist, not to mention has a database of all your iMessages.

In other words, all those newly minted people known as corporations are in on it, but not: dear debt serf. It's a small club, and there is a multimillion liquid net-worth cutoff... and you are not in it. From WaPo:

An internal presentation on the Silicon Valley operation, intended for senior analysts in the NSA’s Signals Intelligence Directorate, described the new tool as the most prolific contributor to the President’s Daily Brief, which cited PRISM data in 1,477 articles last year. According to the briefing slides, obtained by The Washington Post, “NSA reporting increasingly relies on PRISM” as its leading source of raw material, accounting for nearly 1 in 7 intelligence reports.

That is a remarkable figure in an agency that measures annual intake in the trillions of communications. It is all the more striking because the NSA, whose lawful mission is foreign intelligence, is reaching deep inside the machinery of American companies that host hundreds of millions of American-held accounts on American soil.

The technology companies, which participate knowingly in PRISM operations, include most of the dominant global players of Silicon Valley. They are listed on a roster that bears their logos in order of entry into the program: “Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple.” PalTalk, although much smaller, has hosted significant traffic during the Arab Spring and in the ongoing Syrian civil war.

...

the PRISM program appears more nearly to resemble the most controversial of the warrantless surveillance orders issued by President George W. Bush after the al-Qaeda attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Its history, in which President Obama presided over “exponential growth” in a program that candidate Obama criticized, shows how fundamentally surveillance law and practice have shifted away from individual suspicion in favor of systematic, mass collection techniques.

Spying on US citizens is "incidental"... kinda like killing thousands of women and children in drone raids is "collateral damage":

Even when the system works just as advertised, with no American singled out for targeting, the NSA routinely collects a great deal of American content. That is described as “incidental,” and it is inherent in contact chaining, one of the basic tools of the trade. To collect on a suspected spy or foreign terrorist means, at minimum, that everyone in the suspect’s inbox or outbox is swept in. Intelligence analysts are typically taught to chain through contacts two “hops” out from their target, which increases “incidental collection” exponentially. The same math explains the aphorism, from the John Guare play, that no one is more than “six degrees of separation” from any other person.

This is how the big corporations sleep at night:

Formally, in exchange for immunity from lawsuits, companies like Yahoo and AOL are obliged to accept a “directive” from the attorney general and the director of national intelligence to open their servers to the FBI’s Data Intercept Technology Unit, which handles liaison to U.S. companies from the NSA. In 2008, Congress gave the Justice Department authority to for a secret order from the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Court to compel a reluctant company “to comply.”

In practice, there is room for a company to maneuver, delay or resist. When a clandestine intelligence program meets a highly regulated industry, said a lawyer with experience in bridging the gaps, neither side wants to risk a public fight. The engineering problems are so immense, in systems of such complexity and frequent change, that the FBI and NSA would be hard pressed to build in back doors without active help from each company.

Some "do lots of evil" by their customers. They just don't disclose it:

“Google cares deeply about the security of our users’ data,” a company spokesman said. “We disclose user data to government in accordance with the law, and we review all such requests carefully. From time to time, people allege that we have created a government ‘back door’ into our systems, but Google does not have a ‘back door’ for the government to access private user data.”

Time to kill that Facebook profile... or be accidentally killed for being "of a terroristy persuasion" based on some NSA algo:

There has been “continued exponential growth in tasking to Facebook and Skype,” according to the 41 PRISM slides. With a few clicks and an affirmation that the subject is believed to be engaged in terrorism, espionage or nuclear proliferation, an analyst obtains full access to Facebook’s “extensive search and surveillance capabilities against the variety of online social networking services.”

And some more charts:

Introducing the program

A slide briefing analysts at the National Security Agency about the program touts its effectiveness and features the logos of the companies involved.

Monitoring a target's communication

This diagram shows how the bulk of the world’s electronic communications move through companies based in the United States.

Providers and data

The PRISM program collects a wide range of data from the nine companies, although the details vary by provider.

In retrospect, it is sad what a farce this country has become: artificial market, centrally-planned economy, pervasive spying on the people, a tax collector that target political enemies, an administration that openly lies under oath...

If we didn't know better we would say this was 1955 Stalingrad, although Stalingrad at the height of totalitarianism was for amateurs. This is next level shit: "Firsthand experience with these systems, and horror at their capabilities, is what drove a career intelligence officer to provide PowerPoint slides about PRISM and supporting materials to The Washington Post in order to expose what he believes to be a gross intrusion on privacy. “They quite literally can watch your ideas form as you type,” the officer said."

I think you have it backwards... Thinking the USA creates all technology and THEN Israel, China, India and whomever else obtains the technology then uses it is your fallacy. It is more the fact that the USA learns from Israel, China, and India.

What we have in the USA are a bunch of smart people and profiteers with no leash. They will develop things as innocents and provide cash believing the return is worthwhile but they have no knowledge of their actions and the repercussions that follow. Profit is the pinnacle of US achievement, not loyalty or patriotism.

The USA is a well-to-do family with parents who have no knowledge of the damage drugs do to their children. Believing their children are bright, precious, and mirror images of their self, they have no clue the things their children are introduced to. They are blinded by goodness and arrogant to the neighborhood they live in but their children know, they’re the ones being profited from.

In March, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper responded to a question from Senator Wyden. The DNI said that NSA does not wittingly collect any type of data on millions of Americans.

That appears to be a mis-statement. NBC News reported tonight that DNI Clapper now clarifies that he was talking about email and not phone calls. But whether it's emails or phone calls, it now appears to be a mis-statement.

Wyden: Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?

DNI Clapper: No, sir.

Wyden It does not?

DNI Clapper: Not wittingly. There are cases where they could, inadvertently perhaps, collect — but not wittingly.

Yes, it can happen that the ex-NSA types -- now with affiliated NGOs -- 'might' (will!) collect this for them.  It supplements their pension income from the US Treasury, as well as their 401k Income, Roth-IRA income and other investment incomes -- since they can't make money off books or the speaker circuit, like ex-politicians.  We can't risk these people getting too destitute or desperate.

It's not that bad. Your gallbladder will sieze like a bagpipe if you hit it with lots of oily fatty foods. If you can limit your fat intake you can mitigate some of the pain. Anything that stimulates bile production will cause your gallbladder to hurt. Of course every doctor on the planet will tell you that it's evil and it needs out. Don't try the quacky Hulda Clark liver flush either. The thought of passing a 10 mm stone through a 5 mm bile duct is laughable.

My doctor told me that high protien diets like the atkins diet fostered the production of gall stones, I don't really believe him though since just about everyone in the family has had gall bladder problems. Any time you visit the doctor though they'll ghost clutch at your right side and make grabbing motions like a zombie and say like bella lugosi, "Eeeet neeedz to comeee out!" That being said if it's really bad and inflamed/infected it may need to. But if it's just an occasional thing I'd look into experimenting with diet first. I dealt with the pain for almost two years before I relented to the butchers.

Good luck.

This is *so* ridiculous. Come on. Did you really think Phil Zimmermann wrote Pretty Good Privacy for nothing? Learn to encrypt everything to make listening to it all expensive by hiding the needles in a stack of needles. Stop using Skype, use Google or AOL or ICQ (or preferrably your own servers) but learn to use end-to-end encryption tools.

And where is the difference between Facebook selling everything they know to some company or other or selling it to the government?

The difference would seem to be that the government probably doesn't pay for the data, and no one has signed a consent agreement for the government to have the data when they click "I agree" right after not reading the "contract."

I guess that's not much of a difference.

Taters are starchy and idk what (if any) diastatic power they have on their own and at what temperatures (in water). Unless a real pro weighs in here, you'll have to do some homework on how to convert/breakdown those tater starches into fermentable sugars (yeast eat sugars, not starches, and produce alcohol) -- obviously there are ways, but barley's my domain. Apologies if you're already familiar with this...

Basically, find a way to convert the taters' starch to sugar, reduce the heat on your sugary mixture to room temp, add a packet of brewer's yeast, and wait a few weeks (month or two? A hydrometer will tell you how well you're doing). You'll at least get 10-13% alcohol from the yeast alone, but that'd still be watered down if you're aiming for vodka. At that point, distillation via a still is what gets it into that 30-40% range. (Save the yeast culture, which is usually a layer of crud on the bottom of your holding vessel, for new batches -- they can generally be re-used several times over before mutation creates off-flavors.)

If you can easily get something else sugar-rich like honey, just boil it (and skim the goo off the top), cool it down to room temp, and add yeast -- in a short while you get mead.

Ultimately, if you wanna make alcohol you do this: have a $2 packet of "dry" ale/champagne yeast handy, find a sugar source, suspend it in water at the proper temperature(s), boil it down, cool it to room temp, introduce the yeast, shake it up (aeration is good for kickstarting yeast) and wait. You'll get something drinkable whether you use malted barley, grapes, honey, taters, agaves, etc. Just research your temperature control and sanitize everything.

Best I can do, man.

At some point they have to get to the point where they have to have You collectively and officially acknowledge that they are doing it to you.  From that point you are a willing participant and less likely to flinch.

It's Just a progression down the gant chart.   Timelines seem to be quickened, or rushed.

My bet is setting the ground work for 2015.75 ish(M. Armstrong turning point)  and possible collapse of the monetary system or war.   K-Winters are a cold bitch.

It's where we have been heading, but it seemed to have quickened in the pace.

Sometimes that leads to mistakes.  Sometimes they leave a slip showing(record those real early news casts before the 'Line' has been constructed)  and sometimes things go boom.

Watch closely.

Don't worry, all this monitoring is for your protection. Government agencies (like the IRS) are totally non-partisan and would never use the information to target people based on their political beliefs.

I know some people who have cameras in their homes that they can view from their cellphones. How can I get a job as an NSA information analyst?

It's simple to work for the NSA.  Just obtain a top degree from one of the top universities in the world in electrical engineering with a focus on computer sciences or information theory.  And, pass their security clearance process.

If you do this, you're in there if you don't otherwise offend their government politics somehow.

And by the time I do, this whole thing will be bankrupt and gone, and we'll have a lot more pressing shit to worry about.

It's always the individual variation that's amazing.   The Gross generalities don't help sometimes.  It's a fact with misleading conclusions.

Like "The majority of accidents are within xx miles from your home"  then conclude you are more careless around your home, instead of also realizing that's where you spend 90% of your life possibly.

Oh, fuck it. I'm going to get crucified (literally) for this (last time it was death or being anally raped by barbed wire, there's been a few) but:

I sold a $4 million property to <redacted group> a while back, and there were a lot of old military Quonset huts on it (half cylinders, they're made out of sheet tin and not much else, we used them for storing machinery). On sale, one of the <redacted> younger and more stupid ones let loose "you could fit a lot of bunkbeds in here". They spent roughly $7 mil on the project, but there's no clients, and since I know the business, there's no way they have made money in the last >4-2< years. If I was a smart bear, I'd research how Wall-E the Market Place Builder has invested in Xe (new name) education facilities.

In September, it closes to the public, and they don't seem bothered. <Redacted group> may or may not be linked to Wall-e and an Arabian market, but they basically said: After September, we don't need <redacted> type clients.

Stay Frosty. I don't happen to mind the brands of extremism here, it's all multiplicity. I only care if you're fast, evolved and adaptive.

They don't have to be card carrying libertarians just ones like tea party types that aren't co-opted (see Marco Rubio as a RINO in Tea Party clothing), Ron Wyden is a good example on the D side of the aisle but vet their backgrounds closely who is contributing money to them who they hang out with, what their education background and prior work history is..... What happens is they just refuse to fund things if there is enough of them O if someone hasn't removed him from office or the earth by that time can veto all he wants as long as it can be over rode.

And to expand on your well founded lesson in history.

MIC placed our Congress on notice with their new war doctrine relieving them of any further oversight or need for future funding. And I quote.. The battlefield is anywhere they discover the "enemy" from Boston to the Fatah. Meaning the battlfeield is wherever they say it is. America to be considered a Battlefield is stated in NDAA1867. Real nice huh?

They privatised all Military arms under a universal flag I would guess is NATO? Just take down the American flag and raise the Jolly fucking Rodger.

No allegiance to any flag, just policy and orders. I will find the link or just search those terms. It's been a Corporate war for profit MIC. They just went on record and proved we do not have a represenative governance, we have agents employed by a Corporation based in the District of Columbia registered in the state of Delaware as such operating autonomous of the surrounding 50 states. Look it up.

With all that fucking survellience they couldn't catch 2 19 year olds with a bunch of crockpots who left a digital trail prior to bombing the Boston Marathon a mile long............

We are so fucked with an apathetic public and 3 ring clown circus of digital intelligence that justifies shitting all over the US Constitution in the name of 'national security'. Just to remind the moral types in the military, you are only the tip of the spear, when the government goes rogue so do you by default, remember that before you pull triggers when we roll out the guillotines and AR-15s..........  It is truely getting that close to the final solution. We got one Congressional election left to start moving in the right direction then all bets are off. Just remember we aren't doing it because we want to overthrow but restore the Republic and rule of law and order back in line with the US Constitution.

My point is still valid the amount of survellience is not justified considering them kids put a memorial page on facebook about the Boston Bombing early in the morning before the marathon even started. Facebook a site who gives it up to PRISM there.....

Let's stick with the facts that are out there for the people in the matrix for the moment.

Facebook page prior to bombing about the bombing

PRISM monitors facebook

bombing still happens

Everyone can draw their own conclusions..........

My coworker sent me the following below. We work in the "public sector" in Los Angeles. He is completely unaware of things like PRISM or all the money printing/borrowing but appears extremely excited about all the fun things the city is providing for its people.

"A lot of cool things happening in Los Angeles area in the last couple of years and upcoming years. New museums, rail lines, bridges, parks, and major buildings. Many things going on at once. Sweet."

Back in the thirties I had the same thing happen, a coworker in Berlin was going on and on about a new Cabaret on Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse totally oblivious to what was going on just down the Strasse

I loved my visit to Berlin in 2008. History repeats for a reason. People do forget.

Looping Mackie Messer seems so appropriate now, the calm before the storm and all. Actually all of Kurt Weil's work seems kind of appropriate.

You guys are paranoid for no reason. I'll bet that right now our President, that promised the most open Government ever, is having a meeting with his NSA, CIA, RSO, SRO, NRO, OSI, OSS, SS, etc., chiefs on this problem. You are not aware of it because, like all his meetings, it's a Secret meeting!
