Second Best Day For Stocks Leaves Bonds And Bullion Bruised And Battered

Tyler Durden's picture

Volatility is back - though the averge joe-sixpack would hardly know it as stocks see their second best day of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw its widest weekly range in 2013 - 460 points low-to-high; even as it closes green. The Nikkei the same (with another ugly week). The USD saw its worst week in 19 months (as JPY carry unwinds hit) but the commodity complex was very dispersed. Oil prices surged 4.6% on the week (so no tax cut there then!) while Silver prices plunged 3%. US Treasury prices close down for the sixth week in a row (for the first time since May 2009). The ramp in the late day today - which held us nicely green on the week in stocks - was absolutely ignored by credit markets which ended the week notably wider.

Aside from the opening day idiocy, this was the best day for stocks in 2013...

as all the indices managed to scramble back into the green on the week...

but it wasn't all easy money as builders ended the week -1.65%...

Volatility is back.. and it didn't work out so well the last few times...

with the Nikkei down for the 3rd week in a row...

As the USD was hammered the most in 19 months...

Treasuries down for the sixth week in a row...

Quite a week in FX markets...

WTI surged 4.6% on the week while Silver plunged 3%

Credit markets made it back to the unchanged mark on the week at the European close and then turned south to close the week notably wider....

Charts: Bloomberg and Capital Context

Bonus Chart: Does make you wonder why these two markets keep spiking and reverting to one another...

Maybe BTC is what takes us to the next era and maybe the network forks and it becomes worthless.  Either way that's the best $500 I ever spent to be part of the bravest, most daring monetary experiment in the past 500 years..."

Just a few thoughts (surprised not mentioned by this Tyler):

1.)  the takedown in PMs today looks alot like the Friday takedown before that horrible weekend when GLD shed 10% on that Sunday night.  (Including the stupid sell-off in the GLOBEX hours).

2.) Why would the dollar fall on a pro-taper (good news) day?  The dollar should rise on the prospect of tapering QE.

3.) why would stocks rise on a pro-taper (good news) day?  The stock fall was reversed right after the NFP report by algos.

4.)  Is anything in the macro slowdown really changed?  The NFP was just more or less in line with analyst forecasts.  It will be revised lower.

5.)  Does anyone really think the USD/JPY bounce will last very long?  Maybe just long enough for some HFs to reposition themselves in another carry.  If USD/JPY hits 93 (as I think it will), there will be some implosion, I am sure.

We hit the 50% retrace today in silver...from the April 18 spike low/April 21 spike high...and washed out some new, weak longs in the process.  That's what I saw in silver today.

If you believe another giant gap down is in the offing for silver, I believe that would require a spike in interest rates...which would hit the broader market.  And that is what RUT shorts are for.

Possible, but not much evidence Joe Public is making massive 401(k) reallocations to stocks.  Instead, picture a leftover sheep balloon from Pink Floyd's 'Animals' tour converted to a Rose Bowl float, with wheels and a NASCAR engine, a trojan horse of sorts with an algo wolf in sheep's clothing inside driving fast, plowing over parade drum majorettes, batons flying in the air like ninja sword helicopters, terrorizing the crowd.  Rather than an orderly march to get a haircut, I'm picturing a bit more lamb carnage . . .

+1 for the Floyd Animals reference.

Pigs (Three Different Ones) was on SAT Radio yesterday morning while I was driving my 14 year old son to school ( he is an avid Classic Rock fan and has been playing his Gibdon SG for4 years now...and is pretty darn good).

Was explaining to him the concept of the album and told him check out the lyrics...some interesting stuff.

My HS yearbook quote was from Dogs, and Animals is one of my all time favorite albums (yup...still call em albums !).

Ah, then I'll assume your handle is a reference to a certain Led Zep tune from Physical Graffitti, and that you likely own a drawer full of disposable lighters, in a rainbow of colors.

Though I'll admit I listen to more indiepop or classical than Floyd these days, I was a proud owner of an "Animals" 8-track in high school, and as I get older my appreciation for Seventies music has increased, particularly 70s Top 40, which really wasn't half bad, in retrospect (Steely Dan, Bowie, Supertramp, Genesis, Eagles, ELO, Hot Chocolate, America, etc.).  Seemed like crap in the Eighties, but now, looking back,  Seventies Top 40 has a certain unique character, either that or I'm having an ML crisis ...

yeah.  keep buying the VIX and keep getting your hat handed to you.  Who here remembers when the VIX actually instilled the fear of God into you on a print of anything north of 16.  It used to be that as the VIX approached 20, that was the time to get the hell out of dodge, and always the print would rise to 30 or 40.  Now, when the VIX reaches 17 - 20, fuck, that is a total buy signal.  And it has been that way every time for the last 3 years or so.  So, the VIX, is a terrible marker for the market.  I mean it used to be pretty good.  Now it seems to me that its signals have been stood upside down.  Buy when it looks to break out, and hold for any print below 17.  A print of 30 will never happen.  I repeat, will NEVER happen.

The only way you should ever go into any stock is if you have studied well enough to know it inside and out and be convinced that you are investing into a good solid company. If that was your case when the price goes down you jump to buy more, like wit any bargain. You need to be happy it goes down, that is the test, like some of my friends who are gold bugs and you see them with bigger smiles everyday as gold goes down... Since all of them are not planning to sell or speculate with gold but to preserve wealth the cheaper it is the more they can buy the happier they are. They know that in the long run their premise is as solid as gold :)

Saving in gold. 12 years ago, I asked an Indian MBA colleague of mine how did he save. He told me that since he was a student he would buy gold coins to put his money away. I remember telling him that in that way he was not making his money work, he was much younger than me, smiled and said that those were his savings and that he didnt want to speculate with them, too much hard work to get them, that he preffered to make money withothers people money and to get a cut of that, with them not him risking it. Who is laughing now? Also, do you know where does Jim Kramer park his personal money? Gold, gold miners and real state...
