Ron Paul: "It's Going to Get Much, Much Worse"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Adam Taggart of Peak Prosperity blog,

Dr. Ron Paul has long been a leading voice for limited constitutional government, low taxes, free markets, sound money, civil liberty, and non-interventionist foreign policies.

His last term in the U.S. House of Representatives ended earlier this year, so we caught up with the former Congressman to get his latest perspective on how successfully our national leadership is dealing with America’s economic challenges.

In Dr. Paul’s assessment, Washington is too committed to deficit spending and the debt-based economy – both operationally and philosophically – to expect it to embrace a more fiscally-responsible model without a forcing crisis (which he believes is coming):

[T]hey believe it like a religion that spending is good no matter what the spending is on. And that the deficits don't matter; deficits are not a burden. And even though we have this national debt and we have a foreign debt, they don't consider that so bad, as long as people will spend money. And if the people won't spend any money, the government has this moral obligation to do it.

I don't expect anything else because they are reflecting what I consider “prevailing attitudes.” And the prevailing attitudes for the last 50 or 60 years, especially since the 1930s, has been spending and deficits and printing money is the way to go.

But where I am encouraged is outside of Washington. You get a better perspective from people like you who talk about this and get people to look at their investments. I think this is beneficial, because a lot of people are realizing this whole system is deeply flawed, and they are looking elsewhere. And that is why I talk a lot about free markets, and property rights, and Austrian economics, and getting rid of the Fed. All these things are now up for grabs. A lot of people, especially the young people, are looking at this. So, for this reason, I am a bit encouraged by what might come out of this.

But I think we are going to go through the ringer. I think it's going to get much, much worse. It is bad enough already, but there is no way that we can step back.

The one thing I am convinced of, after having spent so much time in Washington, is that this will not be a gradual recovery from this disaster that we have. We are not going to elect enough people and have enough courage to vote the right way; there is too much demagoguing and too much misunderstanding. The people would revolt, but the collapse will come. It is going to hit the dollar, and then we are going to have our opportunity.

So, the more people who are protected intellectually as well as financially, the better off we will be in rebuilding what we will need to do in the near future.

Dr Paul continues to be vocal about the destructive role the Federal Reserve’s loose and interventionist monetary policies are having in enabling the mal-investment in the system:

What if the Fed could not buy government debt? What a different world it would be. Everybody said this would be a disastrous to the economy but what if people accommodated with this?

What if there was a dependency on saving? What if we did have a market rate of interest? And what if that resulted in less bubbles? All of a sudden the world would be a different place.

But no...The only thing they can even do is spend more and more money. That is the only tool they have.

So, for that reason, I am not shocked at the numbers. I guess I am more surprised that the whole thing holds together so long. Because when you look at this, and you look at the foreign debt, and the national debt it is so outrageous, and there is still confidence in the dollar, the world they do not have a good currency, so the best they can come up with is the dollar, but even the dollar is less popular than it used to be. It is being held a lot less now as reserve currency, but we can still buy oil, and we can still buy our stuff from China, and they take our currency.

But what amazes me is that it holds together. So I think monetizing debt and spending and deficit is going to get much, much worse until the world rejects the dollar. And there will be a rejection here at home, and prices will soar, and eventually interest rates will break loose and they will start rising.

He continues to view precious metals as prudent to hold in advance of this currency crisis. But in the long run, he sees civil agitation for smaller government as our best strategy:

I don't think the euro is going to replace the dollar. And that certainly looks like it is the case. You are not going to go to yen, and you are not going to go to special drawing rights…

No, when people become frightened, they look for things of real value, and I don't think they can repeal the laws of economics that says that for 6,000 years metals have been beneficial. They will go to monetary metals, gold and silver, and they will buy other things, such as buying property. But no matter what we have, whether we have our gold coins or we have our property, if we have an authoritarian government, that is our greatest threat.

So, I would like to think that there is no perfect protection, other than shrinking the size and scope and power of government, so that we can be left alone and take care of ourselves.

I don't share your optimism.

I believe when (not if) USD is rejected by other nations and loses reserve status, that's it for America, game over, done, finished.

Like I keep saying, govt plans vs banker plans.  Way different.  And bankers have always won.

Who knows, end of USD could be soon, maybe why Bernanke disappeared, even why all this surveilance stuff coming out, last fear campaign hoping to keep sheeple in line if it does go soon.

Always figured it would be slow slide to worthless, but maybe not.  SCO announcing gold-backed currency would kill USD overnite.  We'd wake up to worthless dollar and market pandemonium, and it goes downhill from there.

I never felt Rothschilds et al want America as the center of their "world government".   Always felt it would be Europe.  No evidence, just gut feeling.    Maybe they feel it's time to "take America down a few notches" before this surveilance stuff really gets out of hand, and killing the dollar would be a simple way to do it.  They're bankers after all.

I agree that the world will probably be run from Europe and probably always has been run by the old bloodlines directly from their old hunting grounds.  It seems like many current events can point back to the financial district known as "The City" of London.

I am convinced that our current circumstances are due to our own ineptitude, willingness to take the easy way out, opting for gratification over prudence, spending over saving and fighting over trading.   I've ignored all the conspiratorial views of history because they're so simplistic - like blaming Jews for the Black Death or Mexicans for a bad economy.  Sometimes there are no pat answers, no convenient group to point fingers at.

The USD will be the last fiat around due to historical pressures alone.  The world currency does not collapsed while such dingbats as the pound and euro float merrily along.  We are the authors of our demise - not some shadowy group.  The spying was simpy the next stage for folks who know nothing to do except react.

It looks like their plan is working. There is about as much chance of any of us becoming victims of this dumbass crackpot "intelligence" system our government has created, as being killed by a terrorist. As with the profiling by the IRS and every other heavy handed and corrupt action this government takes, its more for effect than actual results. They want us afraid. Afraid of everything and everyone. Our fear is their power. We have just seen someone stand up to them and likely he will suffer, but the more of us that pull our heads down and act like we can somehow hide from this are no more enlightened than the jews were in Germany, as they were hauled away, first one at a time and eventually in train car loads. I'm not saying we should lunge straight into their bayonetts but to go sillent now seems like a complete waste and an ultimate capitulation to me. But then again I could simply be a fool, like everyone else who thought they could stand against tyranny.

Oldhead - you are not a fool. You are a voice of sanity. It is helpful to remember that those who are putting these systems into place are simply flawed humans who, despite their belief that by being hierarchically organized into seemingly flawless systems they are somehow superor intelligences, they are in the end just greater fools. The people who sit at the heart of governmental power are no smarter, and no more competent, than anyone else, and despite their flagrant abuse of regulatory power, they are still simple idiots. That will be the salvation of our democracy, if there is to be a salvation instead of degenerative chaos.

Perfect.  My reasons exactly for not giving credence to conspiracy theories as explanation for this or that event.   Govt officials are just like us only they have a little power.  They are no smarter or talented or competent and thus, could not meticulously organize exotic conspiracies and execute them with perfection - especially when every atom of evidence demonstrates their utter incompentence.

We have devolved to a point where officias earnestly insist that the best way to fight terrorists is by spying on the American people.

There are options to avoid spying. While the NSA is developing the Utah super spy center, even they have limitations.

Firstly, they can only break 128 bit AES encryption with their super computer complexes. They can't break 256bit AES. So, you just get two things:

1)Free - Truecrypt (.org) -- encrypt all your local computer files with 256bit AES, using at least a 14 character passphrase. That protects your data 'at rest'.

2) Cryptohippie - this pay VPN service encrypts your communications with 256bit AES, uses proxy chaining to 'scramble' the pathways to avoid detection, and uses forward packet security to make it nearly impossible for anyone to capture more than a few packets of your data at a time (and they still have to decrypt it).

There are ways to ensure your safetly online, and that article you quoted was fearmongering bullshit.

Perhaps flouride prevents the outrage? I mean, combine this with all of the antidepresents that doctors are so quick to prescribe and you get a great recipe for "melo soup".

For those who actually feel the outrage, perhaps it is quelled by mind-numbing entertainment ("Reality" TV shows, pro sports, MTV etc...) coupled with a recognition that they are only about 5% of Americans who are actually mad enough to want to do something.

Or...perhaps with so many people looking for a job (or a better one) they NEED to believe that the government will fix it all.

We'll probably have a lost 2 decades and by the end of 2030 we'll have a GDP comprised of 80% services, 10% Farmville "products" and 10% actual goods production. Real inflation will be 10 - 20% annualized (2010 - 2030) but CPI will have it pegged between  a "healthy" 3 - 5% annualized; meanwhile, paper gold and silver will be kept at ridiculously low levels (as they are right now); and the age to start collecting social security will be 70. ..oh yeah, and the bulk of everyone's 401Ks will consist o Treasury bills/bonds.

Jesse couldn't even manage to be a governor. While I think he actually means well and has the endearing quality of saying just what you want to hear, his raging narcissism gets in the way of actually accomplishing anything and I don't think he actually wants to have to do the real work involved in governance, though that might be a plus for the kingmakers, the powers behind the throne. I grant that his term here in Minnesota was amusing, kind of like having Donald Duck at the helm of state, but I personally think we have become cartoonish enough without electing a Looney Toon.

This ties into finance and the FED. The fucking FED is enabling all this with their unlimited money. Congress keeps increasing spending to enabling the state and in turn all the contractors who do the actual spy work. Kill the FED and it stops once Congress is forced to keep a budget. Throw all the fuckers out in Congress who vote for this shit and letting Government grow larger and more intrusive. The source of this is a spending problem being enabled by cheap and easy credit. If you stock traders here want to protest monkey hammer the fuck out of Google, Facebook et al called out so far as being tied into PRISM. Short the fuck out of them. Also monitor the traffic closely on those stocks see if their is coordinated algo push back to counteract the monkey hammering. If it is big enough you know the FED and the TBTF banks are behind it and in turn it is an admittance they are in bed and on board with the spy totaltarian spy state and it's agencies.

If I was the Tyler(s) or contributors here I'd watching all the companies named in the PRISM program's stocks closely this week to get some clues to how much do people give a fuck about this whole mess by how they trade those stocks and what resistance is there if any and how large and by who. It might make for some eye opening finance blog entries this coming week.

If half of Americans fall into the definition of "cannot afford" and they get an average of 50% of just the $100 monthly increase in cost rebated, that would be ~150 million people times ~$600 for about $900 billion. Obamacare could add a trillion to the deficit.

Believe it or not... I'd also like that to become a reality [shit circumstances considered]...

Unfortunately ~ I always default to the logical & mathematical reality that it will NEVER OCCUR... Not necessarily 'ever'... but more 'ever' in the sense that it won't happen within my lifetime [based on the EXTRAORDINARY MAGICAL SUPERPOWERS  that money printers appear to hold versus the mortal calculations of an ordinary human lifespan]... I'm NOT SURE I can outlive that time window [though I'm SURE the outcome is inevitable]...

IOW ~ I'd love to sit down & have a beer with you... kito... Doc... & anyone else that has dedicatedc their TIME to posting their thoughts on this blog...

It's the next logical step from here. Otherwise we will stagnate on here pitching each other the same shit.

I have put some thought into creating a sort of Zerohedge "Linkedin". I am actually going to get it moving. I don't pimp a blog and I truly value the friends I have made on here. My angle is nothing other than creating a network of resourceful people who generally share the same mindset. The idea is that if I had to transact business, I'd prefer to do it through someone on here who may benefit. If someone on here needed a job, wanted to help their kid who just graduated (It's all who you know right?)...etc etc.

Beyond that, and I have said this for a while. I would love to grab a beer with many of you. I have not travelled in a while. But I will start getting om the move relatively soon. It would be awesome to call out the city I am going to, and have others do the same, and start grabbing some beers and finally take this bag off my head.

Amateur radio ... I'm keeping my license current and my skill sets up. Ideal way to communicate when all other modes are shut down. Your location on HF is very hard to track as the radio waves bounce all over the upper atmosphere. Licensing has never been easier and a quite sopsticated equipment set up is less than $1000. Antennas are a simple piece of wire high up in the trees, very hard to even see. Most new rigs run off 12 volts and can be kept charged with a simple cheap solar charger. Most rigs monitor every frequency sprectrum, shortwave, military, etc.

If you are serious about prepping you will need to keep your ears to the rail and this is the way to do it.

Gonna go out on a limb here, Dr. E, and posit that some, maybe much of what's been going down, is a prelude, a softening up of our defenses, with an eye towards 2016. And beyond.

How they held on for the past "X" number of years (too many people smarter than me have too wide a variety of the possible timelines for our downfall for me to assign a number so "X" it is...) is beyond me.

Therefore, I think their capacity to carry on is possibly infinite in size as long as they keep the insane calliope music playing, keeping us off balance and chasing ghosts.

Thanks Jon, love that song.....Locomotive Breath/Jethro Tull

In the shuffling madess
of the locomotive breath,
runs the all-time loser,
headlong to his death.
He feels the piston scraping
steam breaking on his brow
old Charlie stole the handle and
the train it won't stop going
no way to slow down.

He sees his children jumping off
at the stations - one by one.
His woman and his best friend
in bed and having fun.
He's crawling down the corridor
on his hands and knees
old Charlie stole the handle and
the train it won't stop going
no way to slow down.

He hears the silence howling
catches angels as they fall.
And the all-time winner
has got him by the balls.
He picks up Gideons Bible
open at page one
old Charlie stole the handle and
the train it won't stop going
no way to slow down.

For all the Zero's, thanks for the facts/outrage/entertainment. Lock and load. Salute!!!!!!!!!! R we there yet???

It's HARD to gain trust in any way, shape, or form, [in real life ~ which is not easily understood until one's EFFORTS to maximize their numeric 'FRIEND' network via social media resulted in disaster]...

It mostly takes TIME... TIME is the factor that smoothes out the edges [or, 'clarifies' them]...

It takes 'aptitude' [on the listener] to decipher TRUST... It's an entirely mobile & fluid process...

Good point following the "if".  No guarantees because the growing complexity requires more societal inputs to be juussst right.  Ain't happenin.  In fact, just the opposite.  More things going wrong, bridges collapse, buildings fall down, bombs go off, liberties are cavalierly traded away for security by the highest sworn Constitutional officer in the land, etc.

Oh yeah, and the money thing.  Somethin about reserve currency.  Sound as a dollar, etc.  Ain't happenin either.  Just as those stupid dead rayciss white men warned against in that ancient paper we've turned our economy over to the financial types and they've blown it.  Again.

So now we have bridges collapsing, buildings falling down, bombs going off, liberties eroded,  AND we're getting deeper and deeper into debt.  Complexity.  Right.

The major problem the old guard always have [Kaiser / Hitler - Tzar/ Lenin / Stalin - Puyi / Mao -  Louis XV / Robespierre -  James I / Cromwell - NOW INSERT YOUR FOUNDING FATHERS INTO THIS - etc etc] is that they fundamentally always imagine that the new guard will resemble them.

It's a simple choice: you were offered the nice way out (slow decline, happiness, a nice retirement) but you went for broke ("NO PLAN B") and decided that your old ways were the only ways. Look at Bilderberg - all Oil powers there, all OLD media, all OLD powers. No-one under 46. All fucking retards. No brilliance. Nothing of worth, barring a shitty, shitty, shitty old extractive economy where if you're a CUNT you get rich. Our kind are culled very quickly if we revolt. Take your current issues and multiply them a little (or - how to use MSM as an effective allegory for your own struggles).

Hybrids, on the other hand. Now, there you've an issue.

If everyone gave up their I-Phone for an AR-15 and tried to make America a better place, what would happen?  (Please don't answer that we'd run out of AR-15s really quickly.  That would be funny, but shallow.)

It's a shame the traitors outnumber the patriots 100:1.

The Marxists and Fascists have won, guys; the Cloward-Piven strategy has worked too well, and together with corporatocracy, they both have already destroyed the country.  The only way to survive the next decade is to get off the grid somewhere and grow your own food, and have plenty of ammo.

They have not won and will never win until we give up.  Like Great Britain in WWII, it looked like they could and would never win, but the voice of one man, Winston Churchill, rallied a country and the world to resist, fight and win.  Today, Ron Paul is one of the best voices of reason and, luckily, his words resonate not only with those who understand true economics, not Krugmanomics, Obamanomics or Abenomics, but also with the youth of America.

It will be especially important for voices like his to resonate with the young in America as those born after 1980 never witnessed Vietnam or any other war that hit home (and many wrongly view Iraq and Afghanistan more like police actions than ongoing wars). They were born after the gas crisis, became aware as Reagan brought about a strengthened country, and watched "The Wall" crumble and the USSR dissolve.  I've noticed they seem to live in a world where they think nothing truly awful can happen on a large scale, because the only horror they've ever seen of any magnitude was 9/11.  Poor Americans born after 1980 are either serving in the military or know someone who serves and they see the inequality every day. Most of America's bottom 1/3rd of the economic pyramid know someone who has died or been maimed in service of our nation, while those raised in well-to-do families hardly are aware of the wars except when they cast their votes for Obama because he said he would stop them and fix everything wrong with our country.  These are the ones, coupled with everyone else under 55 who will never see a dime of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid or any other service we will have paid for our entire lives.  Why won’t we?  Because the fraud being perpetrated at every level of government, from local to federal, is so pervasive and broad is scope that it truly would not be believed by most.  Also, there are still some people so naïve as to think that more than a handful of politicians exist other than Ron Paul that are truly doing good and speaking the truth.

We need to start a list I'd refer to as the A.T.L. LIST.   It stands for "ABOVE THE LAW" and the names of these people need to be made public.  They need to be asked to stop what they are doing and makes lifelong acts of contrition - or face consequences.  Then, once they are named on these lists, they should be given 90 days to make public contrition, or face whatever those of us deem appropriate.  In other words, when people are never going to be held accountable by our government, we need to start holding them accountable individually and allow them it to become open season on everyone ATL and allow as many of our 300 million Americans to start bringing about a system of making sure nobody remains above the law.

Examples of people who may need to be handled outside of the court system would be people like Jon Corzine.  Once he would make the list he should be given 90 days to start bettering society or . . .

I don't think any threats need to be made other than to say that after 90 days he should become fair game to be treated by others the way he has treated his fellow citizens.  I don't mean he should be robbed, but i think most will follow this line of thinking.  Once people make the list, ignore it, and find out what the consequences are, things might start to change in this country.  Has he stolen or misappropriated hundreds of millions of dollars of other peoples’ money?  Is anyone’s life worth hundreds of millions of dollars?  That’s a question I’ve always pondered.

What if Corzine was treated simply the same way as any penniless American caught stealing from a supermarket is treated, especially after the 3rd time they are convicted?  What if people simply decided to take a stand and do what was knew in their heart was right.  We know that we cannot have a country where our children can have a chance to live in peace with freedom, privacy and opportunity if people like Corzine (and thousands of others, he's just a simple example) are permitted to continue to operate in society as they have done for decades.  What would people do to someone like him?  I don't know and I do not know want to say, lest I be treated like every other peasant in American who has spoken up over the years?

Think of Julian Assange and the gentlemen who just revealed the NSA/CIA secrets from Hong Kong.  Whether you agree with them or not, I believe they felt they were doing the right thing to better humanity and their lives will be destroyed for it.  Corizine, well, he can still get a 6 p.m. reservation on Friday night at the Palm and will still be able to pay for it with someone else's money – unless we make some changes.  Some people should learn the feeling of being afraid every time they walk out their front door.  Then they should know the feeling of not having a front door or house or anything else left that they hold dear.

This is all in my opinion - but THE ATL LIST could be a way forward, as 300 million Americans are just scary enough to the government for them to stockpile billions of rounds of ammo.

But remember, there can never be a sufficient number of people in the government to touch even the slimmest minority of the 300 million if we become united in our cause to root out the evil in this country.

Remember, right now they think they are untouchable.  However, at some point, Hitler also thought his victory was a guarantee.  Americans can make one hell of a difference when united for a good cause!

(The prior passage would be my final exam paper on how to begin to bring about a positive change in American Society if I were taking a PolySci class in HS or some college.  I'd get an F, but it's the way I feel.)

P.S. - How many hundred thousand more Americans do we want to see lose their jobs, get jailed for exercising their freedoms, or impoverished and left in a life of misery while those ABOVE THE LAW conntinue to wreak havoc on our society?

Slavery may have been abolished in the 1860s, but milllions of Americans feel they are living somewhere between slavery and indentured servitude.

While Obama and 10,000s of other government 'workers' are flying around the world to meetings and conferences at 5-star hotels while awaiting their 6-figure pensions after 20 years of menacing the poor - all on the American Worker's tit and foreigners bond purchases.

If we start the change today, Ron Paul will still be right, but we'll be one day closer to thing getting better.  Remember, right now there is very close to a 0% chance of anyone who has pillaged our nation ever being held accountable for their actions. Is it time to make a change?

The fuggin marxies and fascies have won nothing! They will NEVER win. It's all based on lies, and liars ALWAYS take thier shit too far.

Find your testicles and get in the face of these liars! Good men MUST stand up! Expose them!

We have the greatest LEGAL document ever devised, but WE have to defend it, and USE it to defeat colloectivist progressives.

It's time for men to be men. Let not Edward Snowden's selfless act be in vain!

Fuck you and your cowardly defeatism.

Expose them?

That's it?  Just expose them and everything turns around magically?

They ARE being exposed.  And what happens?  Nothing.  Because sheeple don't care and those who do care are powerless to do anything about it.

I applaud Snowden's bravery, but what will it accomplish?  Answer: Nothing.

Your constitutional principles just don't matter anymore.  Nobody in a position of power cares anymore.

That's not defeatism.  It's looking at things realistically.  What IS, not what we wish was.

We're long past the constitution.  Way past it.  That's reality.   Obvious reality.  In your face reality.

No way America will ever go back to it.   No nation in human history ever went back to its founding principles.  None.  Zero.

Your only hope is some other powerful nation rises up and smacks America down ...permanently.  But we all go down with it.

That's reality.

The reality is that the US of A, the mecca of 'americanism' on Earth, never strayed away from its founding principles.

It is simply that there is no longer enough resources left to maintain the 'american' dream.

When you are a thief, one day, you will hit a point when there is nothing left to thieve and when you can no longer glorify theft as you used to as it means driving others to thieve from you as you thieved it all.

That is the reality of the 'american' world.

What is amazing is this 'AnAnonymist' Chinese citizenism citizen's capacity to denial and propaganda.

The illusion.

Chinese citizenism citizens in another exhibition of their legendary capacity to denial. The most entertaining segment in them is Chinese citizenism citizens who actually believe the spin they wove.

Your communauty will go gang style if the situation allows.

But once again, no surprise, Chinese citizenism citizens are duplicitous and won't tell that their true motives.

Just cheap diversion by Chinese citizenism citizens to avoid dealing with the core of the issue, about their nature being revealed.

Ron and Rand Paul are a bunch of rejects from the clown car that dumped the last batch or Dumbfucks on the American Populace. Rand Paul could not even pass the boards for certification in opthamology, so he started his own board. What a dumb fuck! You want these clowns to lead somebody? Give them to the Texas panhandle and Oklahoma. We can construct a new wall of China around it to keep the brown people out, and rename the place Dumbfuckistan!
